The tactile cover and pages are great for transitioning from touch-based object play to visual and audio cues around reading. This book was recommended by a friend and became an early favorite. Never Touch a Monster seems to keep my son's attention better, but this book has more baby-bite marks -- that's a good sign.
I bought this at my son's book fair, a few days ago. I didnt care for the words. I was looking for a it picture book. I liked how this book was touch and feel too, while browing the selections. He is special needs. One of his diagnoses is sensory processing disorder. he loves to be read to but on his terms lol. He liked flipping through the book, while rambling off a few letters of the alphabet.
This is one of those books I would never have been attracted to as an adult. Yet my grandson loves it! So I am grudgingly giving it a four star, for he doesn't tire of the story nor touching the rubber-textured surfaces. And I must admit, the short narratives are cute.
This is one of the best touch-and-feel books I have ever come across! The textures are raised rubber, so they will not wear out like a typical book of the same kind would. Perfect for younger children!
The whole “Never Touch” series of books are a must have for anyone who interacts with babies through Kindergarten. Many books claim to be tactile in nature when, in fact, the illustrations differ so slightly from the base page that the descriptor is almost a lie. Not so with this terrific series that has a boldly colored animal on the right side of every page with a large section of that creature containing a contrasting color of distinctively bumpy, swirly, and/or striated rubbery-ness. The text on the left side of the page has different fonts and colors and is just as vivid as the critter it describes. The text, however, is the reason for only 4 stars. While illustrations are 5+, the text often has choppy rhythms that are sometimes awkward to read and while there is occasionally a bit of rhyme, the authors do not seem to work very hard at finding synonyms that might actually provide that component. Regardless of their textual shortcoming, parents, grands, and caregivers should look for all of these at bookstores, big box stores and Book Fairs at schools everywhere!
Wonderful texture book for little ones! We purchased this for my 10 month old daughter along with the Dinosaur and Monster books, and she's obsessed with them! My only issue with this one out of the three is that the first page really does not rhyme. The rest of the pages rhyme which makes it more enjoyable, but I really don't understand why the first page does not. It does bother me a lot, but my daughter still loves the textures on the cover and every page. I also love how sturdy these books are. Typically cardboard books are sturdy, but I think because of the textures, these pages are a bit thicker and I really think they'll hold up a lot better than her others. Despite the rhyming, I do think we'll enjoy the books for years to come.
{My thoughts} – My 10 month old is at the age where she loves to touch and see how different things feel. She also enjoys being able to put different things in her mouth as well. I can’t tell you the number of times books have been in her mouth because, well, she’s at that age. When I was shopping at Sam’s Club I ran across this book and I just had to buy it for her.
I haven’t given it to her yet, because I wanted to review it first. I am certain that it is going to be one of her favorite books. It has so many different kinds of textures that start on the cover and continue through each of the pages. The text is bright and fun colors. The illustrations are the same bright and fun colors you see in the text. The words on the pages go nicely with the illustrations.
I recommend this book for any child that enjoys touching and feeling different kinds of textures. I also recommend it for any child that enjoys being read to on a regular basis. This book has the potential to become a loved book for children.
It’s been quite a while since I read a children’s book so I quite enjoyed it. I love touch and feel books as well so this was quite a pleasure. The art was fairly engaging, the poems hilarious. But the humor to me was a bit weird.
The poems are all about not touching a dragon, and then doing something that would require you to touch a dragon. So don’t touch a dragon but hang a sign on its neck. How precisely are you going to do that without touching it? Practicing your lassoing skills?
The mother of the child whose book this was, upon seeing me read it was like “the one thing I don’t like about this book is it uses the language ‘you must never touch’ or ‘don’t touch’ and then has a touch and feel nature! It’s speaking out of both sides of its mouth, and what if my baby goes to look at a stove and I say ‘don’t touch’ he’s already been trained to do so.” I think she has a point! It’s funny for an adult, but a kid might take it seriously and gather the wrong lesson instead of understanding the humor.
Art: okay Story: okay Price: $10.99

Genre: Picture books - Interactive book Awards: None Audience: 0-3 A: Never touch a dragon fits into the interactive category because it requires children to have physical participation. It prompts the children to touch and manipulate the book. B: One visual element of Never Touch a Dragon is the use of texture. Each page has a new rubber piece for the child to feel that centers around the story. C: I would use this book one on one with a small child to get them to start having an interest in books, learning words, and getting excited to read. D: Why splash a hose on a dragon’s nose? – So, the flames will not come out.
My toddler niece picked out this book and loves it! After a few readings, she knows the story backwards-and forwards. She enjoys the tactile pages, and "reads" the sign house, as well as the rainbow printed word, "dragon" every timeI point to it in the story.
A quick read, which is great for bed-time and repeated readings.
Probably my daughter's favorite kind of touch-and-feel book because the textures are great! However I have an issue with these books because I see them as reinforcing disobedience or confusion with what the word "don't" means. I guess the solution for me is to say different words when I read the book, but as I'm not the only one who reads to her I might get rid of them.
This was The Nephew's favourite for long while starting when he was 7 months. And it was an acceptable thing to read and read and read again for us adults, even if there has been no consensus on which accent we should adopt in order to get "indoors" and "claws" to rhyme.
A favourite in our household! The rhyming pattern is very satisfying, and my baby belly laughs when I read it really fast. He loves the rubbery textures. It ends a bit abruptly so it's less of a "story" and more like a toy but we love it.
This is very similar to the 'That's not my' books but the textures are very different which makes a change. I love the dialogue and found the different dragons very entertaining.
My four month old loves this book. The colors are bright, and the book has touchable parts on each page that she enjoys feeling and keeps her interest. The story is cute too.
The silicon scales are what influenced me to buy this book for my son's birthday. I feel little a naughty child poking the dragon even when it says not too!
Bought this book for my nephew after "Never Touch a Monster" went over very well. I found some of the rhymes were a bit of a stretch but it was still fun to read.
I bought this book and the other "Never Touch A..." books for a friend's baby shower. I love the tactile sensations, perfect for a stimulating and developing a baby's sense of touch.
Cute board book with textures to touch on each page, despite rhymes saying not to touch the dragons. Good for babies & young toddlers with thick cardboard pages.
