Scorpius Syndrome #6

Knight Awakening

Rate this book
“Sexy, tough, and deftly sprinkled with dark humor.” -- New York Times bestselling author Larissa Ione

The Line Between Obsession and Love has Disappeared

The world has changed. Any rules that might’ve been in place before the Scorpius bacterium ripped through civilization and decreased its population are no longer in place. Obsession and survival are the new reality. So, Marcus Knight, after a hellish time in captivity that stole most of his memory and all of his soul, has one focus, and that’s keeping Dr. Penelope Kim safe in the aftermath. She’d risked her life to save him once, and she’s all that matters. For months, he’s kept his distance, protecting her from afar, because he knows that one touch—one sigh—one kiss—from her will never be enough.

Passion is a Dangerous and Deadly Temptation

Penny Kim is one of the few doctors still living, and she alone holds the key to ensuring the human race continues. Several of her friends are pregnant, and the clock is ticking down on their survival. Her days are filled with experiments and hope, while her nights are consumed with visions and dreams of the hard-bodied and powerful soldier who’s made her safety his one and only mission. She should be wary of him; she should be terrified of him. Yet all she feels is an unreal craving for his touch that gets stronger every day. Life is short, and she’s unwilling to wait, unaware of the danger already hunting them both. Some risks are worth it, even in this new and dangerous world.

Knight Awakening by Rebecca Zanetti
6th and last book of the Scorpius Syndrome series. Best read as part of the series in order. Futuristic post apocalyptic romantic suspense. Contemporary times.
A virus has killed 95% of the world population. No cure. No live births since the pandemic. No electricity.
Written a few years before the current 2020 environment.

Marcus Knight was tortured extensively under orders of the President. The plan to create invincible soldiers. Now that Marcus been rescued and reunited with his brother Jax, they are determined to save their women and the group of survivors they’ve teamed with and collected. The President is searching for Lynne Harmony and will destroy anyone to make her his possession.
Doctor Penelope Kim is horrified when she’s bought the into the bunker and told to stitch up the profusely bleeding Marcus. What was down to him to cause all those wounds and scars? She promises to save him and while he doesn’t have any hope, he can’t help listening to her and becoming protective.

Marcus is very much the silent hero. I love his vulnerability and strength. His inability to understand nuance is sad but adorable. And the way all the men panic when a woman cries is charming.
Non stop gripping suspense with deep relationship building.
Wonderful conclusion to this series. Loved the world building and relationships.

Chapter headings as journal entries are my some of my favorite parts of this series.
Excerpts from this book specifically:
“It’s time to consolidate this country under my leadership, even if I have to blow most of it up first. President Bret Atherton”

“When I get tipsy, I think of Marcus. Well, I think about him when I’m not tipsy, too. Dr. Penelope Kim, Journal.”

“I’m not keeping a journal. Marcus Knight.”

“I hate my dreams. This is still not a journal. Marcus Knight, Still not a Journal.”

“How can a woman who drives me absolutely crazy also provide me with peace? Marcus Knight, Not a Journal, da..it.”

“I like Penny. Marcus Knight, Still not a Journal.

“The shrink has insisted I keep a journal, so I’m keeping this one since I don’t want to make her mad. I like that I’m not the craziest person in the room when I work with her. Marcus Knight, I guess this is a Journal.”

I have waited a very long time for the last book in the series to come out. It was pushed back numerous times however the question I had to ask myself at the end was it worth waiting for? And yes it was.

All loose ends are tied up into a somewhat perfect bow. I had expected a proper epilogue and not just a paragraph but that is just me being picky.

At the beginning I wasn’t sure that this was going to work for me as my expectations for a last book in a series is really high but I went in with an open mind.

Marcus Knight was taken and experimented on while Scorpius ravaged the earth. No one knows what all the drug concoctions were but there were many and they screwed with his mind. His one shining light in the bunkers was Penny Kim.

I adored Marcus as a Hero although he was a bit of a monkey boy in that one instance. But he got over himself.

Penny Kim is a doctor and met Marcus in the bunkers, she was not the one that experimented on him but she has always felt drawn to him. It was these two against the world when they were saved by Marcus’s brother Jax Mercury things started to get interesting.

Penny is a really strong heroine and I really enjoyed her as a character. They got the romance that they deserved.

I met the author about a year ago and I wanted to know if they managed to get a cure for the pregnancies and my question was answered, happy days! Such a bittersweet ending as well.

Ding dong he’s dead!

I wonder if there could/would be a possible spinoff series. What happened after Scorpius?

I can definitely recommend this series.

This review may contain spoilers, so fair warning, upon reading the review.

Introduction
Knight Awakening is the sixth installment in the "Scorpius Syndrome" series and in this one here, is where we get the finale to the series and even though the author did say that there would be more books, we haven't seen those yet so who knows if she plans on adding more books to this world. But for know this is the finale book in the series and this is where we see everything that has been building come to a conclusion and seeing what the future will hold for this world and all these lovely couples we have fallen in love with along the way.

The Main Protagonists
The Hero: Marcus Knight
Marcus is a wounded warrior. He was taken captive during the pandemic, and tortured and his body manipulated and has amnesia of his past. His brother is Jax's brother (hero from book one). He is protective and does have certain psychopathic tendancies when it comes to defending Pen.

The Heroine: Penelope Kim
She is a doctor and a scientist. She is working on getting a way to help pregnant women not lose their babies that have been infected with the syndrome. She pines for Marcus, a man whom she has loved for quite a long time and sees the man beneath the tough protective exterior and has a compassionate heart.

Summary
Marcus Knight and Dr. Penelope Kim have been together for quite a long time on their journey throughout this dystopian world. Marcus was taken and experimented on and Penelope was his only anchor to the real world and the human condition when he wasn't being tortured and abused. She was his light, and even though he has been rescued and living with his brother, he made a vow to protect Penelope no matter what. Penelope is a doctor first and foremost, but she is determined to save their people especially the pregnant women who keep losing their babies who were infected with the syndrome. But things are escalating, and they need to find the research that will assist them, but Penlope is also determined to have the man that she craves and desires more than anything else, if only he will be open to a relationship with her and not be so burdened with his past that haunts him...

My Outlook
Knight Awakening is a book that I have been pushing for quite some time honestly. I just don't want this series to end. I absolutely love this world and its probably my favorite that this author has created. There is something so raw and real about creating a dystopian world, where we see the good and bad of the human equation and Rebecca Zanetti really conquered this in this series and I honestly wouldn't mind if she came back to it. But at the same time, I wanted to get to Marcus and Pen's book so badly. We have seen them in the past couple of books and really wanted to dig deeper into their connection that has only been teased in previous installments.

This story starts out with a bit of unrequited love here. The hero is almost obsessed with protecting Pen, no matter the circumstance and both his brother and Pen are trying to get him to get to a normal schedule. But as tensions start to rise at the base as there are attacks happening of certain individuals affected by the virus attacking their people, there is a rising sexual tension building between Marcus and Penelope. Marcus doesn't believe that he isn't good enough for Penelope, and is trying to protect her. But Penelope is determined to show Marcus that he is worth loving and having a partner to be loved. And while the team works on finding the President and other bunkers as they are running out of supplies, there are also other reveals to happen. And I have to say that I was completely shocked to see the truth being revealed especially about Marcus. I definitely didn't see that coming at all and Zanetti really threw me for a loop. But we also get to see a emergence of some characters we have only see in the novellas who have been doing other work to help rebuild the country despite the president's effort to destroy it all. But can these two groups come together and not only destroy their enemy but also rebuild America and the world from the damages the Syndrome has caused? Do we get the answers to their future? Somewhat haha We do get a finale of sorts and seeing their plans for the future and them reestablishing a government. However, I do wish we would get a novella or something to really showcase more of this a bit more even. Who knows...maybe I will write a letter to the author haha

I did have a blast with this one though and the romance was so precious. Seeing Marcus and Penelope come together and really open themselves up to love was endearing. Marcus' struggles really worked me over though, what he has been through. But Penelope is so good for him. She is the one that has to fight for the relationship and I do get a kick out of seeing a heroine being the fighter in the relationship. I love a hero that shows his vulnerabilities and the way he connects to her but also rebuilds his relationship with brother was also a focus as well.

So was this book perfect? Not really. It didn't have everything I was hoping for. I was really hoping for a bit more of finality to the series overall and seeing what happens to this group that I have fallen so hard for. I think the ending just wasn't as satisfying as I had been expecting but maybe the author did that on purpose, but I did feel like there was something missing from it. But if you are a fan of this author's work and especially this series, you will enjoy seeing Marcus and Penelope finally come together in this one here.

Overall View
I found Knight Awakening to be an sexy installment that brings the series to a close in such a epic and fulfilling way. Its a story of redemption, reveals and heart! .

I enjoyed this book and the series overall. This is the sixth and final book in the Scorpius Syndrome series and I was eager to see how everything would wrap up. I have been very curious about Marcus since he first appeared in the series so I was excited to finally get his story. Penelope was the perfect match for Marcus so it was easy to get behind the romance in the story. I am so glad that I finally took the time to tackle this entertaining series.

Before we met Marcus, he spent time as a prisoner enduring a series of experiments run on him. This experience not only changed his personality but also stole his memories. He is determined to keep Penelope safe and will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. I really enjoyed watching Penny start to connect with Marcus on a deeper level. Penny is a busy woman since she is the only doctor around and she needs to find a way to help women carry a pregnancy to term as soon as possible. This story was exciting with a nice blend of romance and action.

Michael Pauley did a wonderful job with the narration of this book. I think that he was a good choice to narrate this series. The voices that he uses for both the male and female characters were very well done. I had no problem listening to this book for hours at a time and believe that his narration added to my overall enjoyment of the story.

I would definitely recommend this series to others. I really liked the end-of-the-world scenario and enjoyed getting to know all of the characters. The series really does need to be read in order since each installment builds on the events from previous books. I thought that this book brought the series to a very satisfying conclusion. I hope to read more of Rebecca Zanetti’s work very soon!

Initial Thoughts
I enjoyed this book and the series overall. I like end of the world scenarios so this series appealed to me from the start. I have been very curious about Marcus since he was introduced so I was eager to get his story. There were some pretty big issues to wrap up for the series in this book and they were addressed, although a little too quickly at the end of the book in my opinion. The narration was well done which added to my enjoyment.

Avoid. Another author who starts a series but either doesn't finish or draaggs out the releases. This one was supposed to be released "soon" at the end of 2018. Then it was listed for release in Nov 2019. Now it is "supposed" to be released Feb of 2020. I'm done with this series and all Rebecaa Zanetti's books.

I loved Marcus. He was such a damaged hero, who had forgotten who he was and wasn't sure who he could be. All he knew was that he had to protect Dr. Penelope at all costs. I was entertained by every moment that he allowed himself to feel, the time he spent with his brother, and the budding intimacy that he was sharing with the other inhabitants of Vanguard. He was dark and deadly and there was so much to him buried beneath the surface. I had fun being in his head and he made me laugh, which is always great.

I hated Penelope. Seriously, I really disliked her so freaking much. I haven't liked any of the heroines from this series and was hoping the best was saved for last. Nope. She was the worst. Aside from being on call to help with injuries, she had nothing to recommend her. She was pushy, rude, abusive and manipulative. If her characteristics were attached to a male character, I'm sure many of us would not approve. So why should I be a fan because she's a woman?

Jax sighed. "The Ripper has to go, Marcus. Either I do it, or Penny does it, and I vote for me."
"Me, too," Marcus said quietly.
"No." Penny held up a hand. "I need your help. Get your brother out of her, please." She kept her gaze on the prone man.
Marcus didn't move.
"Marcus?" Penny asked, partially turning to look at him.

Girl, are you serious? Jax is the LEADER of the group. The leader. You're being a part of the group is compliments of his courtesy. And honestly, you're there because he wants his brother there and you happen to be part of the deal. Where do you get off?

She kept talking about how she had to find a cure for Scorpius. How? When Scorpius hit, she had just finished medical school. And she thinks she's the best option when the leader of the CDC (Lynne), who had been working on Scorpius, is there looking for a cure? Is this girl for real?

There were so many examples of how horrible this heroine was, but Marcus was so great that I took my time enjoying him and he and all of the other characters and the plot were the only reason this story worked for me.

I remember being so excited with the first of the Scorpius books when Jax’s story first appeared on my feed, and thought that Rebecca Zanetti had a fantastic thing going here—with an overall narrative arc, several pairings set up for book sequels and a rich, dystopic world for exploration. That there was the introduction of new characters and pairings along the way made me want more as well.

But my excitement waned as the series wore on, not because of the context or the world-building itself, but that I found myself increasingly disconnected from the pairings and a style of writing that felt abrupt, weirdly unpredictable and changeable at times, so much so that I couldn’t quite get into the emotional voices of the protagonists at all.

‘Knight Awakening’ was no different. I was eager to see how it would have all come together as we raced to a conclusion, but with multiple POVs and the number of loose threads that Zanetti tried to tie up, Marcus/Penny felt like a side story in a book that was supposed to be theirs, only that there were too many interruptions with so many other things happening at once that I couldn’t quite focus and enjoy a growing relationship that just felt skin deep despite the tension simmering between them. The start-stop feel of them trundling along tripped me up continuously and there were parts where I struggled to see how Marcus/Penny were actually growing as a couple apart from jumping into bed together.

But if that dragged on a bit—with some waffling on plot and character—, the sudden, bewildering shift in pace towards the very end to a quick, quick resolution did no justice to the overall arc that deserved more than a snap-of-the-fingers ending, almost as though Zanetti tired of the storytelling and decided to wrap it up in several sentences of telling rather than showing.

In all, this shaped out to be an uneven read with scenes that were quite engrossing and some twists and turns that I enjoyed. But I wish I could have liked ‘Knight Awakening’ better…after all, there’s quite a bit of nostalgia for this series when it started out so well but then took some knocks along the way, more so for a pairing that I’d come to root for a long time ago.

The story picks up where Winter Igniting ends. I love the series and world Zanetti creates here with alpha men and the strong, smart and sassy women who fight and survive alongside them.

The Vanguard group has broken into one of the government bunkers where Marcus Knight, Jax’s little brother, is found. He’s been held captive and experimented on. Marcus has been through hell and back. The only thing that kept him from going insane has been Dr. Penelope Kim.

With Knight Awakening, things are not good for the Vanguard group. They have several pregnant women in group and more in the Pure (uninfected) group who need help. The syndrome effects births and they need to find a cure. Supplies are running low and there have been more attacks on their compound. The President and his army are out there and must be stopped. All of this made for some intense moments.

Marcus is broken and has formed an attachment to Penelope. I loved his neanderthal ways and felt sorry for him. His fear of hurting her or going berserk helped endear him to me. His concerns are not unfounded, and it will take Penelope’s complete trust to help him overcome. The romance made me laugh and swoon with moments of frustration, heart-melting, and tenderness.

I love the interactions and camaraderie between members of the Vanguard compound from the not a shrink to the brothers. Zanetti’s characters pull you in from the onset and have you rooting for them. You’ll share their triumphs and cry for their losses.

This novel had a lot to accomplish, and it was strong until the last chapters. While I liked the outcome of the overall story arc, I felt like it all fell into place too quickly. The build up to their confrontation with the President and that evil witch of a woman unfolded so quickly, I thought I missed something. Despite the disappointed, the romance and conclusion left me grinning and eager for whatever Zanetti brings us from this world. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Scorpius Syndrome series is addicting once a reader gets rolling. And, as such, I was reluctant to finish this last book and know it all was ended. Parts dystopian, sci-fi, and spicy hot romance, each installment is a rush from start to finish.

Knight Awakening is the sixth book in a series that must be read in order due to the strongly-connected overall story.

The world has been upended by a pandemic bacteria and the survivors are still fighting the disease and their own fellow humans led by an insane president and his allies. Vanguard and the Mercenaries have joined forces to protect their people and find answers. Their last big find in the secret bunker brought them little new information and supplies, but for Jax Mercury it is a win because his brother is found down in the cells alive. But, Marcus Knight has been held captive, tortured, and experimented on so that his mind might never recover because his memories are shattered.

It has been a few years since I read the last installment in the series, but I didn’t hesitate to dive back in. I remembered a great deal because the series has been a strong favorite. I cheered when Jax found his brother alive, but was sad when Marcus couldn’t remember anything before the lab cells. I enjoyed getting his hard-fought story along with seeing the buttoned up and serious Dr. Penelope first misunderstand their attraction and then fight it as they go for it. Marcus and Penelope’s story is told in the foreground of a bigger story that is the grand finale.
Atherton is still after Lynne and his evil scientist lover wants Marcus back as her play toy. They and their force now including the gang members plan to dominate the barely there United States. Meanwhile, the Vanguard-Mercenary group are running out of water, are feverishly working for a cure to help the pregnant women and they have a saboteur setting the violent, mindless ‘Rippers’ into their stronghold killing people and destroying their precious small supply of medicines for the Scorpius victims. So much going on and it was all rushing to a grand climax that had me flipping pages rapidly and reading with baited breath.

The finale book was all I could hope for and delivered a strong finish. There is a side thread that came out of the prequel and a later novella featuring other players and I would enjoy more from that end. Pretty please, Ms. Zanetti! Overall I liked where the author ended it even as I’m sad to leave a fabulous cast of couples and their friends behind. Those who enjoy strong action and spicy romance in a dystopian setting shouldn’t miss this series.

Knight Awakening is (I think?) the last book in the Scorpius Syndrome series, and I didn't really feel that it lived up to its predecessors. There was still action, romance, hardship, betrayal and danger. However, it didn't really have the same extremely urgent feel the other books had.
Also, I felt like the ending was way too 'easy' and kind of too nicely tied up in a bow than I would have expected. Some of the things that happened in the end weren't fully explained, so I was left with a hunger for something more juicy to bite into.

Series note: This is the final installment that completes the ongoing story arc.

A satisfying conclusion with resolutions to most of the threads. Nevertheless, the ending is rushed and anti-climatic with one or two remaining questions such as .

Marcus and Penny's romance is the highlight of the book. One cannot help but feel for Marcus as he struggles to cope with the aftermath of his imprisonment and torture. His bond with Penny is tangible and they have wonderful chemistry. Penelope is a powerhouse in a small package, and her interactions with Marcus are delightful.

The conclusion to the continuing conflict with the nefarious president is disappointing. There is a great deal of build-up in the first 2/3 of the book, but the actual denouement fizzles. It is as if Zanetti ran out of steam and just ended everything with a whimper rather than a bang.

All in all, this has been an exceptionally entertaining read that feels all the more apt during the Covid-19 pandemic. While there is definitely potential for a spin-off series focusing on the Brigade, it appears that Zanetti will not be continuing.

I feel like I waited forever to read this. This was a terrific series and way to end it with Marcus and Penny's story.

We've met Marcus as the broken, much experimented upon brother to Jax. Scorpius had left him very messed up and with an incurable obsession with the sweet Penelope Kim, who was so kind to him in captivity.

We see Marcus find some feelings beyond his obsession and it is a delight to watch his relationship with Penny develop. Whilst kind and sweet, Penny is no pushover, probably a good thing in a post apocalyptic world!

Lots of pieces of the story get resolved. There are some interesting plot twists along the way and we meet some golf from The Brigade - a spinoff series that looks like it never made it to publication but the characters were introduced in book 1 (Nora and Deacon).

Loved Marcus. So good to see him develop beyond broken guard dog.

4.5/5.0

I think this could be one of, if not my most, favorite in this series. Maybe it's because I have such a soft spot for tortured heroes and their road to redemption. Marcus is definitively at the top of that list! His story with Penelope is just dear. And it takes place amidst the very worst of times and the most tense situations in war.

I really do wonder what weird fascination this author has with spanking, though. Every single one of her books in both this series and the Dark Protector series has her main heroes using it against the heroines - and not always in a good way. SUPER annoying and WAY overused...

It was satisfying to see this adventure come to an end and in a hopeful note without being too perfect, that would "ruin" the tone of the series.
However, the final chapters were a little rushed, I can't tell if by lack of ideas or page limit.

“Not sure what’s going to happen in this life, but it’s you and me.”

4.5 stars

The sixth and final (at least for now) book of the Scorpius Syndrome, this book has been a long time coming, but it was SO worth the wait! Marcus and Penny’s story is sweet, funny, intense, super sexy and gorgeously romantic, set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world still searching for answers and dealing with every day dangers, but that is also finally starting to settle. I loved being back in this world, and loved every moment of this book.

Marcus Knight is the younger brother of Vanguard leader, Jax Mercury. Held prisoner, tortured and experimented on, he has lost not only his memory, but most of who he is, and he is pretty much emotionless except for the anger that is constantly simmering, and his obsession with the doctor who saved him, Penelope Kim.

“You’re angry. I can see it in your eyes.”
“It’s the only emotion I have left.”

Penny may just be one of the only doctors left alive after the Scorpius bacteria wiped out most of the world’s population. Since being rescued by Vanguard, she has quickly found her place and is working hard to help the survivors living in Vanguard-Merc territory. But her main focus is the find a way to help pregnant women deliver healthy babies, thus ensuring the continuation of the human race. But Penny has another problem – a strong, fierce and broody man who refuses to leave her side, and who has begun to infiltrate her fantasies.

This is such a fun set-up! Yes, Marcus is super-possessive and protective, and somewhat obsessed, and while Penny should possibly be scared of him, she’s one of the few people who treats him like a man, acknowledging the trauma that he’s been through and caring deeply for him. There is an underlying chemistry between them, and as they get to know each other outside of the bunker where they were both held, and Marcus starts to adjust back into the real world, things begin to change.

“I can’t be like everyone else. You’re all I think about now. If you let me in, if you let me have more, I can’t hold it back.” He clenched his fingers into fists. “I can’t hold myself back.”

Marcus and Penny have a fantastic dynamic. You can feel their chemistry and the sexual tension that sizzles between them, and once they give in to that, this book is seriously steamy. But there is a deeper connection between them that starts to bring out Marcus’ feelings, and that’s both beautifully sweet and seriously funny.

Marcus crossed his arms. “The parameters of this relationship are clear, remember? You keep safe and I try to have feelings. Well, guess what? I’m having a shitload of feelings right now, and you’re making yourself unsafe in the process.”

“Huh,” Marcus said, cocking his head and studying her with those deep eyes. “I believe you’re pissing me off.”

Apart from the dramas of living in a dangerous and deadly post-apocalyptic LA, Marcus and Penny have issues closer to home that they need to deal with. It seems that the secret to human-kind’s survival could be buried in Marcus’ lost memories, and as the Vanguard team dig for answers, he’s afraid of what may be unleashed - especially if Penny is in the firing line. It creates great intensity, and shows not only Marcus’ vulnerability, but also Penny’s strength, and I loved their honesty through it all and seeing their feelings for each other deepen as they figure it all out

“Promise me you’ll open yourself to falling in love with me.” Before he could remind her that he didn’t have feelings, she pressed on. “Just be open and willing. Maybe you feel love like others, maybe you don’t. Maybe your love is different, and that’s fine. All I’m asking is that you don’t stop yourself and that you be open. You can do that.”
“Baby, I’m already open. Anything inside me, you can have. No holding back.”

Alongside the romance, the members of the Vanguard-Merc crew are trying to survive in the post-Scorpius world. Death is always a possibility, and with the threat of gang wars, rippers on the loose, and a homicidal President after them (as well as the every-day struggles of food, water, shelter and medicine), the time has come for the move their settlement to a more permanent home. But with every step forward, there are two steps back, and it seems they have a traitor in their midst. It will take all of their combined strengths to make this final push to settle into their new world, and it’s an exciting and fast-paced ride as we watch it all happen.

The characters from previous books in the series all appear, and I loved catching up with them. All of those alpha males and strong females are a fantastic combination, and I loved seeing them all working together, teasing, bantering and arguing as they fight for their future. And in the middle of all of the action and excitement, Marcus and Penny’s love story unfolds beautifully.

“I can’t fight this world without you. It’s you and me, remember?”

I love this world, I love this series, and this is a great book to finish on. It's exciting, funny, dramatic and romantic, and I thought the ending wrapped up really well, though maybe a little too quickly - but that could just be me and my mild obsession with the series, I’m not ready to let go and would have loved to have seen just a bit more. But Rebecca Zanetti hasn’t ruled out returning to this world for future books, and I would be right on board if she does!

As a bonus, the ebook has a short story at the end of it which is set before the series, and is a great little extra which helped dull the pain of it all being over.

I loved it! 4.5 stars.

Bad ending to a good series

I felt as is this was just a quick end. It was not satisfying and felt rushed. I’m very disappointed.

This is the final book in the Scorpius Syndrome series (though there will be a spinoff series following a different group of people through the same bacterium outbreak). Each book in the series, we have a new couple come together. This couple are fairly new to the Vanguard group, but Marcus is the little brother of leader Jax. Jax has been looking for his brother since the outbreak started.

Marcus was kept as a prisoner by the psychopathic president and his scientists. They did all kinds of horrible experiments on him. His only light was Dr. Penelope, who was also a prisoner, but would come in to tend him after torture or experiments. They both escaped in an earlier book, but Marcus is struggling to life outside of a prison cell. He has no feelings, just wants to protect Doc Penny.

This was a good ending to the series. Not only do we have the romance of Marcus and Penny coming together, we have someone sabotaging the B vitamin viles (which helps in treatment of Scorpius bacterium). There is also the president to deal with because he has an obsession with Lynn Harmony (the fiancee of Jax).

The Vanguard group also runs into The Brigade, another group of people trying to help restore some normality to the world. Some of the people from The Brigade were friends with Lynn prior to the outbreak. It is good to meet up with them again. They are also the focus of the spinoff series.

Overall, great ending to a dystopian romantic suspense series. I really look forward to starting the spinoff series. I do highly recommend you read this series in order, as each book builds on the previous book.

Considering what’s happening in the world a book about the end of the world courtesy of a pandemic was apparently just what I needed. I cried at the end and was left with hope... who would have thought it?⁣

In a time when a pandemic has wiped out 95% of the world’s population and left the rest changed, you have our hero who was ruthlessly experimented on to become a super soldier and our heroine who is a doctor that saved his life. Now he follows her around protecting her from the world until she can’t stand it any more and challenges him head on- of course sparks are going to fly.⁣

I’ve been obsessed with the series since the beginning and these characters especially waiting for them to get their own book! The whole series has a big story arc that gets tied up with this book so I don’t recommend this as a stand alone- at times the arc takes over (which I was totally fine with). I feel like I almost wanted more darkness from the hero but they got their HEA which was exactly what I needed.⁣

I loved almost everything about this story. Penny and Marcus were great. Great characters, great development.
I've read some of the other reviews and I have to agree with some of them. That ending, although tied up loose ends, it ended abruptly. I would have like to have seen them at least get to their next destination..

This is probably more of a 4.5 Stars, that I'm rounding up for the whole of the series. I enjoyed this story. I liked Penelope and Marcus. Scorpius has changed everyone and Marcus has so many blank spaces in his memory he clings even tighter to the one thing, his obsession with Penelope and keeping her safe. For her part Penelope is determined to figure out a way to help the pregnant woman in the group, she can't stand the thought of one more lost baby. Of course there's still the President out there plotting evil deeds as well.

This one was tense from the beginning. You knew the big battle was coming. It's been building for awhile and there's a ticking time bomb sitting there. All of the reveals in this one were great and I enjoyed it as everyone here starts to figure how they're going to escape and make a new start.

Overall this was a satisfying conclusion to the story, the one downside for me was that the ending felt a little rushed and everything wrapped up really quickly. I would have liked to see more of the actual reconstruction process in this new world. But altogether I'm happy.

I wanted to give this book 5 stars, I truly did. I loved this series, it was the perfect balance between ruthlessness, romance, bravery, survival instincts.

The romance between Penny and Marcus was perfect. I loved them apart, I loved them together, I loved the way he was broken and how she helped him see that no matter how other people loves, each way is unique. Marcus has serious problems, he always will. But nobody can say he doesn't love Penny, even if it's a different way from other people.

The book was quite alright until around 80%. I looked at where I was and I asked myself how could the author possibly wrap up the entire series that way. The short answer is: with a lot of shortcuts.
Georgia's character for example... why was she even created? She appeared briefly, we were told she tortured Marcus and she disappeared. At the end, we learn she died off page, killed by the President.
Larry's betrayal. Why? I mean, why create problems, sending every warrior on alert, when your clear directive was taking Lynne? Wouldn't it be easier to keep a low profile, so the surveillance wasn't that high and strike when nobody was expecting it?

And the ending. The cure for the pregnant women. It was cool and everything, but I hoped it would involve the Bunkers, with all the trouble they went to find them.
All that "let's make you president"? A very nice bow to tie it all up, telling us how things were going to go.

I don't know. I enjoyed the book, as I did with all the others in the series. But the ending was too short for me, too hurried. I wish I had more.

Knight Awakening wraps up the six book Scorpious Syndrome series and I am so glad that I stuck out this series. I was so happy for Marcus to get his HEA, to work through how he was tortured and Penny to find her voice. This wrapped up the whole story line perfectly and we got more of the other couples HEA’s. Definitely action packed, steamy and a satisfying ending.

This is more the end of a series than a book on Markus and Penelope. They have chemistry and all, but the story behind them is what was most interesting to me. We are going to follow the Brigade from now on, or so it seems to me. We will see, in this Corona Virus Time, I am not so interested in something like a Pandemie I have to admit.....

This may be my favorite book of this entire series. Jax has been looking for his brother for so long and he finally finds him. How he finds him is difficult and shocking.

Marcus has been held captive and tortured and had giving up until Penelope Kim walks into his cell. Now he has something to live for.

This is as sweet a story as can be written in this apocalyptic setting. I can't wait to read more.

Great read I enjoyed it immensely and I'm so sad its over!! I'm so going to miss this amazing group of survivors!! I do have to say the end felt bit rushed and I'd liked to have read about their travels and first look at their new home base. The typos were frustrating at times though which is unusual for RZ's books. That being said I would still highly recommend this entire series as one of the very best I've read!!
