The adventure continues in this third book in the Darkness Rising series!
Darkness Rising is a thrilling post-apocalyptic series that follows the survivors of a massive terrorist attack that isn't quite what it seems. As you learn more about the Fraser family and a few brave government agents who are attempting to unwravel the horror and mystery behind the attacks, you'll soon discover that not everything in the apocalypse is as it appears to be.
Written as a collaboration between Justin Bell and #1 bestselling post-apocalyptic author Mike Kraus, Darkness Rising is a gripping, unique and timely take on the post-apocalyptic genre, and is one that will leave you breathless with every turn of the page.
Darkness Rising is a 6-part novel-length series full of intense, heart-pumping action, incredible suspense and post-apocalyptic adventure that will be released at a rate of approximately one book per month.
Book 3 in the post-apocalyptic Darkness Rising series by Justin Bell and Mike Kraus is just as good, if not better, than the previous two novels. The action sequences are taut, and only marginally relieve the tension that builds with every page. The Fraser family continues to move East to find their oldest daughter, Lydia in Chicago, but entering the Chicago area may be the easiest part of the equation. More harrowing adventures await inside the barrier, where the Frasers are separated by a car crash, and Cavendish’s obsession with the family clarifies. Meanwhile, Customs and Border Patrol agent Brandon Lui and FBI agent Ricky Orosco continue to hunt the perpetrators of the terrorist attack which is beginning to appear to be a complex plot that includes not just the North Koreans, but domestic terrorists as well. Some pay the ultimate price to acquire information, and for others, there is partial closure. I found this story nerve-wrecking in some parts, but I feel comfortable recommending these first three novels, understanding that another three novels will follow. My only complaint was resolved in this issue, but another complaint became apparent in this issue. I don’t like Rhonda Fraser. She is whiny and introspective at the most inappropriate times. She’s snappish to her husband who takes everything in stride. She’s hyper-focused on her oldest daughter, when she needs to be focused on the ones that are currently around her. Ugh! I hope this changes.
Rhonda and Phil head away from St Louis with their children, 15 year old Winnie, 12 year old Max and Max's 11 year old orphaned friend, Brad after an apocalyptic event turns their lives upside-down forever, in this amazing new book from the masterful imagination of Justin Bell.
Gray Skies seem to be the only thing the family can expect in their RV, as they hope to find better times ahead. Meanwhile FBI Agent Ricky Orosco is on the Mexican border, scanning the horizon for evidence that the Colombian drug cartels are responsible for the nuclear bombs that wrought devastation on innocent lives across the continent's major cities.
Fans of apocalyptic, what if...? survivalist vs law and order novels will thrill at this engaging book with its expertly written narration of how ordinary people can become forced to flee the lives they knew so well and journey fearfully through situations straight from their worst nightmares. An overcoming the odds tale of a family in peril, who must pull together with those they love to overcome incredible odds, as they journey East to find and elder daughter Louise, hundreds of miles away at college, who can't be contacted. When the chips are down, who will emerge the victors - get a copy today and be prepared to be scared, very scared at the answer!
The Fraser's are back and trying to survive in this crazy world. New and old friends and enemies are back as the Fraser's try to head to Chicago to hopefully find their eldest daughter Lydia. Of course a few things happen along the way and unfortunately the Fraser's get a lot of practice with their guns. The fight scenes were not only great but wildly entertaining. Hardship causes people to go nuts! I did like how more background information was woven into the story about Rhonda and Lydia and a few things that happened in the past that make me really want to read what happens in the next book. The hints that were dropped.... Just a great story that kept me glued until the end to see what happened next. I read it in one sitting and was not disappointed. Never know what will happen next except lots of great gun battles.
Well, hmmm.... Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 were identical. Editing error or worried I missed something the first time? Rhonda has gone from a trained-since-childhood fighter to having a tendency to fugue about her relationship with missing daughter, Lydia. She , in fact, does so just after being attacked in the van and still in danger, plus not knowing if her other children etc are OK. I get that we need to find out the attachment of Lydia to Rhonda's estranged parents, but that didn't seem to be the best time for a lapse in concentration. The loss of one of the people who we expected to finally determining the domestic involvement with North Korea seems to leave quite a hole. However, the writing did improve this book and there was a lot of action and plot development.
I'm enjoying the characters, the setting, and so on. But you'd think the Cavendish family would have found something better to do by the third book besides seek revenge against Rhonda and Phil for an incident that was relatively small compared to everything else going on around them, especially given that the U.S. was currently suffering through the aftermath of multiple severe nuclear detonations. Basically, the Cavendish family had bigger problems by the third book than avenging the loss of one of their off-the-rails family members. Defies any rational explanation.
Gray Skies is jam packed with action and adventure. The story continues with agent Liu searching for the pieces of the puzzle concerning the suitcase bombs and Rhonda, Phil, Brad, Max, Winnie, Angel, and Greer searching for Lydia. Several main characters get killed and Rhonda must face the hard truth about her daughter and her parents. Book four should be interesting in the path it takes.
Every book in this series just keeps getting better. It becomes obvious that the destruction of America is a combined effort of extremists in the U.S. and a foreign power, with tendrils reaching deep into Washington and government agencies. One thing is certain The United States will never be the same, her people will suffer for a long, long time, probably generations. Without spoilers all I can say is Justin Bell and Mike Kraus have written an outstanding series. Highly recommended..

This was quite a thrill ride for this reader. I've grown to love these characters and their family dynamic, including Angel, Greer and especially Brad as true members of the Fraser clan. I am mourning the loss of Luis and Orosco, who I believed would persevere until they'd unraveled this tangled, twisted conspiracy. They've set the bar quite high for those who come after.
The world as we know it is under fire, streets are battlegrounds and fires are everywhere. Who is to blame for all this? Is there a way to stop it or at least survive in this new world?
I read this as a box set and it was a very rewarding read. Taken as a series it was great. There was a lot of time to get to know the characters and how they fit in the overall series. I would highly recommend it to all readers.
Didn't really grab my attention or keep me looking forward. I would say it was ok but it has been a good series and there are lots of questions to be answered yet.
JB. has. ebbed the third novel in the Grey Skies novel/The fruit is on the way to Chicago when they encounter the Border Patrol. Agent with the right idea. He has determined the attack was from within. Cavendish is found and elimrnated. At the same time they meet Agent Liu. who knows where. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Every time I turned the page, there was more action. It kept me on the edge of my seat. A lot of questions were answered, but there are so many more left - like where is Lydia, and how are they going to find her. I can't wait for the next book.
