Listen, I'm not proud of myself.

(Semi-fascinating because it retells the movie entirely from Daniel's point of view, so the reader discovers (do I need to spoiler tag for a movie from 1989?) (fine) along with Daniel. But it's also for kids so the psychosexual aspects, and, frankly, also the disturbing violence of the ending, are absent. A surreal take on a surreal film.

This has been literary analysis of a Karate Kid movie novelization. Send help.)

I am a fan of this movie, so I was excited to read this.

For the most part it’s a very light adaptation that really breezes over the events of the movie. It’s all strictly from Daniel’s POV so Terry Silver doesn’t show up until half way through and like Daniel you don’t know he’s the bad guy. Kreese doesn’t even show up until the last scene at the dojo and you don’t see him at the tournament.

One of the things this does better than the movie is Daniel’s victory over “Karate’s Bad Boy” Mike Barnes. In the movie it’s a little anticlimactic. The book has Daniel do a little bit more with dodges and blocks and ultimately gets a good hit on him to win.

Very breezy read that was fine, but I’ll be honest I missed some of Silver’s shenanigans from the beginning of the movie. It would have been interesting to see if the movie made that choice, to hide Silver’s full intentions until the end.

This book is about a young boy named Daniel and he was a karate champion for 2 years running. He worked with his long time trainer Mr. Maygi. Then Daniel received bad news that his uncle is sick and forces his mom to leave to take care of his uncle. Daniel had a decision to make, continue karate or move to New Jersey and start fresh. Daniel decided to stay with his trainer and continue working together to win the third championship.

Novelization of movies has gotten better as time has gone on and I just wish this one was one of them. It did add to some inside to a slightly ok movie.

Also wendet sich Daniel in seiner Not an Terry Silver, Karatemeister der "harten" Schule.

“It’s okay to lose to opponents. Must not lose to fear.”

My favourite part about the karate kid series is that they all end with Mr. Myagi proud of Daniel from his victory.
