Have YOU seen the Sleep Fairy? This is the story of a sleep deprived mother and father who are rescued by this shyest of fairies, who only comes out at night when all the children in the home are asleep. She helps children get into the habit of sleeping through by leaving tiny items of interest under their beds for a few days until she can trust them to sleep through on their own. This sweet story is simply told by the author and beautifully bought to life in this new illustrated children’s story. Get your children into the habit of sleeping through by reading The Sleep Fairy to them and applying the idea to your family routine. Here’s to you and a peaceful night’s sleep.
When little man can't sleep his parents promise to tell him about the sleep fairy.
I know, I know! I always have a quick moan in children's books when there are upper case words in the middle of sentences because I want children's fiction to model perfectly how we would like emerging writing to look, so I'm going to get that small grouch out of the way first. Mind you, the children for whom this book is intended won't be reading it personally so maybe I'm just being a grouch.
Other than that, I thought Have You Seen The Sleep Fairy? was a worthy children's book. It's a good way to encourage children to sleep through the night in the hope of a small gift left by the fairy if they do for four nights in a row so that parents can get children into a proper sleep routine.
The illustrations have a childlike naive style that children will relate to and the balance of text to image is good for pre-school children.
I've never had to get children to sleep all night, but I think parents struggling to do so could make excellent use of this book and have some fun reading it in the process.
I received this book courtesy of the publisher/Authoright for an honest review.
I just knew this one would be a book I love, and I did. It was very adorable. About a pair of parents whose children (especially their little son) seem to have trouble sleeping in one go through the night (often waking up the parents). You can imagine that after many nights the parents are just pooped, knackered, maybe even a bit grumpy from loss of sleep.
But then the parents tell the kids about a shy (so very shy) sleep fairy who wants to visit the kids but doesn't dare to because she is oh so shy. Of course, kids being kids, they immediately are interesting in this fairy, wanting to know all about her, and then are especially interested when they hear about the one special thing she does before she will trust the kids.
Plus points to the parents, definitely. I just loved that instead of probably getting angry that their kids (and then especially their son) wouldn't sleep, they just made a wonderful story up, helped it grow by doing certain things. I don't have kids myself, but if I had them and they had trouble sleeping? I would so use this idea and see if it would work just as well for my kids as for the kids in this book.
The ending had me grinning happily. Good job parents, good job fairies, and sleep well everyone!
The art was the only thing that was a bit miss to me. There were parts that I love (the backgrounds/the scenery), but the characters often looked odd.
So I would recommend this book to everyone, this was such a fun and sweet book, and I am sure that many others will embrace it and love it just like I did.
It's safe to say that most parents struggle to get their children to sleep whether they fight it to begin with or maybe they wake in the night and it can be a real problem. I should know my little boy has never been the best sleeper so as soon as I saw this book I thought it would be lovely to read with him. Not just as a bedtime story but also to reinforce the idea of sleeping in his own bed.
The illustrations are different and eye catching with various colours used from light to dark making a lovely contrast when reading. The story length is just right as both my three and five year old were kept entertained throughout the story which was lovely as we could all enjoy it together. The premise was easy to understand and with it being such a simple idea it is definitely worth a try to see if your children respond to the ideas within the story. Now on occasion my little boy still comes through to our room in the night but there has definitely been an improvement since reading this book.
A delightful story, perfect for bedtime!
Five stars from me!
With thanks to Rachel at Authoright for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
I'm guessing the author of this book wrote it because he had experienced his children not sleeping well at night and he needed a solution.
The little boy in the book wakes up in the night, and consequently so do mum and dad. They suggest to him that if he doesn't stay in bed the sleep fairy won't come and leave stickers under his bed. As an incentive to stay in bed it is a nice idea. I haven't tested it personally, but I would give it a go in the future if need be.
I read this book with my 4 year old son. He enjoyed it very much and asked for it more than once. It's full of lovely illustrations, beautifully coloured and quite unusual in style. They provide a perfect accompaniment to a sweet and clever story. It's nice that it's not only pretty but useful too and I'd recommend it to parents whose children don't sleep through. It may not work for everybody but it's definitely worth a try.
This is a lovely little book with some great images!
The story is simple but very effective and easy to follow. I can see it easily being a firm favourite with lots of questions about the Sleep Fairy and her visits!
Having a young daughter myself (who currently sleeps through and has from around three months old) I count myself very, very lucky but I know that can all change!
Five stars from me – very highly recommend for any parents with little ones that fight their sleep – I hope it works for you!
This story will relate to any parent who’s child wakes up
EVERY ….. SINGLE ….. NIGHT!
I say that in shouty capitals because I am one of those parents, night after night my 3 year old wakes up for a drink or a wee or to tell me something really really important (she’s 3! What can be THAT important that she needs to tell me at 2am!!)
So I have my fingers crossed that this story will work on her….. a story that a very tired Mother and Father make up to entice their children to sleep the whole night through.
Now my little one got very excited in seeing a little fairy hand under the bed in the pictures, we then had to check under her bed just in case the fairy had come to visit early. I do hope that this story ‘rubs’ off on my daughter as this mum really does need a fair few whole night sleeps, not sure I rock the mombie look
It’s a sweet story and yes these children do eventualy sleep the whole night through at the end, so there’s hope for us all with this book! If this works, and I really hope it does, I will change my rating to 5 thumbs up!!
