Well written interpretation of mythology, re-interpreted the cast of Mahabharat as common human beings and not gods. Logical. Inquisitive. Rational. And brilliant language makes this one of the most enjoyable book I've read in a while. Unputdownable (if there's a word like that).

Karm by Narendra Kohli- Mahasamar -3. The story is based on the great Indian epic Mahabharata. It is a pioneer and original work on the subject in modern context. The question discussed in this book through the Kauravas and Pandavas is War and Peace. The period of Mahabharata is male dominated world but in the book, the female characters- Draupadi, HIdimba are depicted as storng willed. As in other parts of the Book, in the third part also the plots are gripping to the reader and are consistent with the story. Part-2 ends with escape of the Pandavas from the burning Palace at Varnawat. The Pandavas escape from the underground tunnel. They are scared for their life so they plan not to return to capital Hastinapur and moved out fast in the forest so that if the Kauravas start tracing them immediately, it would become difficult. They reach Panchal Kingdom of Drupad father of Draupadi and her brothers Drishtdumna. Coming out the forest, the party meets various strongmen whom Bhim, the second brother amongst Pandavas, defeats. One night they stay near the forest where he meets Hidimb, a strong person of Rakshas clan. Both fight out and Hidimb is killed. Bhim marries the sister of Hidimb named Hidimba. Pandavas come to know that Drupad has resolved to organise a marriage of his daughter Draupadi. For this a bow-arrow capability test has to be qualified. A a plate filled with oil, above it a fish is hanging from a rod. The archer has to see the shadow of the moving fish in the oil plate and strike it with the arrow. All young Princes who are renouned archers fail the test. Kauravas and Shri Krishan are also attending the ceremony. Pandavas come as village Brahmins. Karna moves forward to attempt to strike the fish. Draupadi refuses to allow Karna to attempt because of his birth in a non – Kshitriya family. Krishan recognises Arjun in his disguise and asks him to attempt the moving fish. Arjun is able to strike the fish and Draupadi put the garland in his neck. Thus Draupadi is married to Arjun. When the team reaches home and meets their mother Kunti, they inform her that they have won a prize. Kunti says that all must distribute the prize equally between the 5 brothers. Her words are final. They inform about the marriage of Arjun with Draupadi and that Draupadi is the prize about which they had mentioned. This ticklish question is replied with the help of Ved Vyas who explains to Panchal King Drupad that he can marry his daughter with 5 Pandav brothers. Later Narad comes and clarifies that Draupadi will remain wife of each of the Pandava brothers for one year and no brother will enter the chamber of the other married brother without proper information and permission. The whole narrative is interesting reading. This Book must be translated in other Indian languages and also in foreign languages so that International readers come to know about Indian culture. It is a must read for all.

Karma (Hardcover) by Narendra Kohli This book is volume 3 of Mahasamar based on great Indian epic Mahabharata. Karm (10) is the same book. The Book is an original work in questions and logical replies form. Indian Philosophy of life based on Gita has bee depicted. Pandavas are saved from fire at Varnawat and move out in jungles. Later they live near a forest of Kamyakvan where Hidimb fights with Bhim and is killed. Bhim marries his sister Hidimba. A son is born whose named is Ghatotkatch. When Pandavas want to leave Ghatotkatch says that he will be available to help them whenever required. That story of his son Barbarreek in battle of Mahabharata will be found in a later volume of Mahasamar. The Pandavas find that the marriage of Draupadi daughter of King Drupad of Panchal with capital at Kampilya. The suitor has to qualify in a bow arrow contest where he has to sting a fish which is hanging and rotating from a wall and its image is seen in the large plate full of oil. The aim has to be taken by seeing the image of the fish in oil by use of only five arrows. Karn tries to come and take aim but Draupadi says not to him because he is not a Kshitrya from birth. None of the other suitors succeed. So Arjun who is dressed a Brahmin aims and hit the eye of the fish. Shri Krishna, Duryadhana and other kings are also participating but do not aim at the fish. When the Pandavas reach home, their mother Kunti is informed that they have won a prize. Kunti without seeing the prize, decides that the prize be distributed equally between the brothers. To solve this question of propriety of marriage, Ved Vyas comes to the Palace of Drupad and informs that it would be proper to marry Draupadi to 5 brothers. Later Narad Muni comes and suggests that Draupati will live with each of the Pandavas for one year. During the year, no other brother will enter the palace of the married brother without prior information. The Book binds the reader to its contents. It is a must read for all.

this is the third part of Mahasamar series. In this part where Duryodhana tries to kill all the pandavas in Varanavatham and how they escaped and lived anonymous for a few years and appear in Droupadi's swayamvaram and got half of the kingdom. In this book, pandavas and Kunti are portrayed as people doing everything just and any one else like Hidimbi are portrayed as people who got what they deserved. Though Kunti used Hidimbi to survive in the Hidimba forest where other Rakshasas are present, and moved on once they are ready to move closer to cities. The characters are more black and white. Some interesting part is how Vyasa had planned the whole period of anonymous years and how their appearance was made to happen at Droupadi's swayamvara with maximum impact. Also, how Droupadi had agreed to marry all 5 of the brothers and how Krishna and Yadavs protected pandavas and ensured they get at least half the kingdom. At the end of book, there's mention of Duryodhana's wife Bhanumati but never mentioned how he got married.
