I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review

I'm not quite sure what to think about this book yet. The characters are somewhat developed, but I wish that Claflin had gone a little deeper with her research to get a better understanding of what it's like to live through an abusive relationship, depression and suicidal thoughts/actions. However, I like that she's opened the door for many teens and young adults to start talking about a sensitive subject.

Kenna is a young woman that has had to live through so much in her young life and has decided that she's done hurting and tries to commit suicide. Rogan is a songwriter in a band that's trying to make it big. He happens to come across Kenna and saves her life. Since she has no where to go, Rogan takes her under his wing and starts to show her a life that can be filled with happiness and love.

The characters and story are well written, and the book is a quick read. My only issue, is that the characters - especially Kenna - would have been better if they were more developed/deeper. Her thoughts and issues (while realistic and valid) seem superficial and stereotypical. As if Claflin hasn't ever experienced crippling depression or suicidal thoughts or bullying so she cannot fully create a character that is suffering with these problems. Even though the characters aren't as rounded as they could have been, this is still a good read for young teens and adults so they can open up a dialogue about the uncomfortable situations and experiences that they can come across.

When I first added this book to my want to read list, I thought it would be a chick-lit that started out a tad serious and then immediately jumped to Lovey-dovey.
Never have I ever IMAGINED, that it would be as serious, dark and REALISTIC as it is.
As a student and a growing teen, I sure go through my ups and downs. Sometimes the downs lead to bottomless pits that's just a void of all things positive an happy.
I thought that was the lowest anyone could get.
But I was proved wrong.
People don't understand why people suicide. They may say they do, but they can never really actively EMPATHISE with the exact emotions going through that person.
This book enlightened me with that knowledge.
It showed me that the most beautiful and most precious things can come out a deep darkness. That they my even hold a candle to the ever pitch.
That you must always hold hope and try harder. And eventually, you'll cast the darkness away. Leaving a shimmering light- that can never again me diminished.

Kenna's life is miserable, with a mother who took off and a father who looks the other way everytime her step-brother attacks her, she just wants to escape. And in the process, she meets Rogan. Rogan is the lead singer of a band, hoping to make it big. But he sees the hurt in her eyes, and he wants to make it better. Living your life being made to feel worthless, it's not easy when people suddenly want to take care of you, to be your friend. Kenna's walls are so high, it's hard to let anyone in. But Rogan, his sister Sutton, and a few good friends are determined to give Kenna the life she deserves.
When Tomorrow Starts Without Me is a compelling story relative to millions of children in this world, who grow up in abusive homes and carry that hurt with them. They close themselves off to the world feeling like they will never deserve better, or that their problems are their own fault. Claflin did wonderfully telling Kenna's story and portraying Kenna's personal evolution.

While reading When Tomorrow Starts Without Me I had so many emotions. I felt fear for Kenna’s choices, hope for Kenna when Rogan finds her, and anger for what Kenna has had to live with for her entire life.

I am a HUGE fan of Stacy Claflin’s but this book was different for her. There was still the tough subjects that she is known for, there was still the relatable characters that I come to expect in her books, but this story seemed more rushed. I felt like these characters could have been more developed. There seemed to be more to their story that wasn’t told. Kenna seemed too accepting of Rogan’s help, too accepting of who she was, and just not cautious enough with what she had gone through. This story just seemed to want to tell me more.

With all that being said, I could not stop reading. I was invested in Kenna and Rogan. I wanted to know what happen to them. Would Rogan make it big with his band? Would Kenna be able to figure out the mystery of her past? Most importantly would Rogan and Kenna be together?

I recommend picking up your own copy of When Tomorrow Starts Without You and enjoying the story of Kenna and Rogan.

👍👍Gripping tale of teen love, served with social media mayhem and a mystery of birth!
February 25, 2018
Format: Kindle Edition
Incredible, emotion-wringing romance of young love that's got it all; I was so hooked! This superbly written and well-paced novel is no sweet adolescent romance; it's gritty and packed with issues that impact teens today but should have broad appeal to adults of all ages as well. I am normally partial to more upbeat stories, but the author quickly caught me up in Kenna's despair and made me a believer in working through ugly truths with even a slender thread of hope for a better ending.

Kenna, the young heroine, gets knocked back at every turn by family and mean girl "friends," but somehow she has survived years of abuse, poverty, isolation and neglect. When well-off Rogan steps into her life he bowls her over (literally!) and introduces her to the first sense of belonging, safety and happiness she can recall. But even Rogan can't protect her from her low self worth, internet bullies and repeated thoughts of ending it all through suicide. While he broadens her horizons, he also supplies the means for her humiliation and destruction via the group he hangs with and the social media network.

Claflin also provides Kenna a mysterious past. Kenna encounters repeated obstacles in her quest for the truth of her birth and childhood. Rogan's resourcefulness and his desire to help in her search turns up extra clues but, his assistance at times backfires and makes Kenna even more certain of her worthlessness to the people who should have loved and protected her.

Rogan's ambitions for the rock band he fronts add extra complexity to the story as his closeness with Kenna has repercussions on the band's dynamics and Kenna fears that she will hamper his success. Each new wrinkle brought extra tension to the story.

Highly recommended for its quality writing and relevance to the pressures of modern life, with a great ending!.:-)

I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author; this is my voluntary and honest review.Fantastic!

DNF (40%, and skipped to the last few chapters)
Interesting premise but poor execution. I'm not sure what the target group is for this book (YA? NA?) but to me it seemed a very simplistic interpretation of important issues such as suicide and domestic abuse. The characters often came across as 15 instead of the 19 they were supposed to be. The hero was continuously reasonable and mature at the same time, which made it hard to see him as a real person. I didn't like that he rescued Kenna on different occasions and in different ways, usually thanks to the wealth and privilege he had grown up with. It would have been better if Kenna had found her own way out. There was a lot of external drama instead of an exploration of Kenna's motivations. The book also seemed to have the message that money fixes everything and reality shows are something to aspire to. Needless to see I don't agree.
I don't think I was the right audience for this book, but I strongly believe YA/NA readers deserve a better exploration of themes like suicide and sexual violence than this book offers.

1 Star.

I tried to like this book, but it just wasn’t for me. It’s a young adult book which is a genre I’m into even if it does get cliche & a little cringe-y at times. I don’t do DNFs for books but I tried to find something I liked about it because the title & then the summary had drawn me in.

This book made me shake my head in confusion from the start. In the first chapter Kenna is trying to kill herself by getting run over by a train but then when Rogan pushes her out of the way she keeps asking him “why did you save me?” It seems like the wrong choice of words. If you’re trying to kill yourself someone didn’t ‘save’ you, they stopped you…right? So that’s what bothered me at first & once something starts to bother me it’s hard for me to overlook even the little things in the book.

Then when she stops asking questions, she thinks about the next train coming to try again. But Rogan does a completely strange thing to me where he asks her to get lunch with him & then all of a sudden she’s hungry & agrees to go with him instead of waiting for the next train. I mean she justifies it by saying it’s her last meal but if she was only going to try again, it makes me doubt her emotions. She even could’ve run when they got to the restaurant but she ended up staying because some stranger she just met asked her to. I get it, it’s a book, it’s a plot point but I’m still raising some eyebrows over here.

The next eye brow raising problem I had was the twist of the book. All of a sudden her ‘dad’ blurts out, out of nowhere that she’s adopted then completely clams up about anything else. It’s almost as if Kenna just accepts it & then every time she thinks about it in the future she just thinks “oh I should just ask him, rats I can’t”. Groan. Multiple times it comes up that ‘hey maybe we should go to the courthouse to look for adoption records’ then there’s some excuse why they can’t. She might not have been adopted from anywhere around where she currently is… She might have a different last name than what’s on her birth certificate… Listen, the courts would know all of this, they would have this information. This whole book could’ve ended there where they found out she wasn’t adopted through official means & possibly open up a case finding out she was kidnapped.

Lastly, an infuriating part of the story for me was that every time her fake mom or her real parents are brought up, she just dismisses them since they’re not a part of her life. Oh my ‘mom’ left that must mean she didn’t want me. There is no possible other reason, it couldn’t even be because my ‘dad’ is a terrible human. Then when she finds out about her real parents it’s another “they had to have given me away even though I know nothing about them. Even if a 30 second Google search would’ve proved otherwise.” Ahem.

The Good:
* The story. It was okay, if not a bit predicable but it bearable enough to get me to the end. I don’t mind the writing style & eventually near the end of the book (maybe the last 20 pages or so) I started to feel okay about the book.

The Bad:
* The characters. Shallow, uninteresting & very surface-level.
* The pacing. The end just felt a little rushed to me, it probably had the most ‘action’ in it but all of a sudden it goes from attempt #3 to a happy ending. Whiplash.
* The twist. Once I knew the twist I could easily predict the rest of the book. I mean even the twist could’ve been a lie, why suddenly trust your ‘dad’ who’s basically been a pile of poop your whole life? I would’ve stopped trusting those words years prior.

The Book:
Not a fan, maybe if this was for younger readers than young adult (possibly pre-teen) I could read this & understand the choices & the story but mostly I just wanted to zip through the book so I could finish it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me by Stacy Claflin
What a wild ride of emotions this story was. Instead of putting it down until the next day, I was so caught up in the life of brave Kenna who had fought for every decent moment of life she had so far experienced, that I could only put it down in the early hours when I had the final pages to read. I saved them for myself as a treat. I am even going to go back and dive into the book where her life begins to change and read it again today.
We begin our story with a girl desperate to kill herself in front of a train, but saved by a guy who has more empathy in his little finger than her ‘father’ had in his whole body. Her step mum is a horror and her step brother is the reason she wants to die.
But the guy who saves her is more than enough to take on her pain and try to make her see there is more to life. So begins their struggle to get through the lies she knows as her past. Kenna is up for the challenge and Rogan is going nowhere without her. He brings her into his family and his musical life where she makes good friends who see the best in this beaten down Kenna and keep going until she is strong enough to search for her life herself! Stacy Claflin always surprises me with the new type of story she comes up with. Dex is a perfect example. Completely different type of story.
I’m so very grateful Stacy chose me to be one of the ones to read and review this book. I was given the book to read but the review is entirely my own. Please don’t hesitate to buy this book and don’t put it on your shelf for later but read it now and give yourself a treat of emotions that you will feel as you read Kenna’s journey to find herself.

What happens when you save someone's life, out of instinct rather than out of choice? Can an event like that form a bond between two people you can't otherwise explain? And can this unexpected bond be the answer to questions you didn't know you had? These are the questions Kenna and Rogan face right from the beginning.

I'm having a hard time trying to pigeonhole this story. Is it romance? There's a love story, for sure, but there's much more than that. And we have learnt to expect a will-the-boy-and-the-girl-get-together kind of story from romance, right? In this case, I never really had a doubt. I instinctively knew that Rogan was going to stand for her, no matter what, no matter how difficult the situation.

No, the point of the story is can love like that be enough to overcome the hardships of the most painful life? And when it's not enough, what's left to hold on to?

Stacy Claflin deals with incredibly delicate and thorny themes with tact and respect, but without sparing the reader with the ugliness of it all. She does this through an engaging cast of characters (I can't wait to learn more about Rogan's sister's story) and bringing together the good and the bad of two very different worlds.

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me was an excellent read, which made me cry of sadness and joy more than once and left me wanting for more.

Kenna is broken. Damaged beyond repair. She has nothing to live for, and she's ready to end it all. Standing on the train tracks, she turns and runs head first towards the train looking forward to the end of the brutal thing that has been her life. Out of nowhere Rogan tackles her off the tracks saving her life. What comes next is like a dream, a fairy tale. Rogan is the lead singer in a band, and he discovers Kenna is his muse. He has brought her home to his house after learning that she has left home. He discovers that she has been abused in more ways than one, and she learns that she was adopted, but she can't get answers from her dad. She keeps having dreams about herself as a child and during her search for answers, she finds out that her identity is a fake.

I won't give away any more of the story, but I was hooked on these two young adults from the beginning. You can't help but feel everything that Kenna has felt and feels throughout the story. The love that develops along the way is sweet, and brought back memories for me of my first love. I loved the HE A on this one. There's no way I could give this one less than 5 stars.

( I received a digital copy of the book. Thanks to Stacy Claflin!!!)

This book is indeed the best of Stacy Claflin's books that I've read so far. It is so beautifully written. I totally love it. The story line , the cover ,the characters , the songs......I love them all. The author has kept things brief about all the suicide and abuse things in the story , so for mature enough people it shouldn't be a problem. And even though those things are brief , it is intense and absorbing. One can totally get a picture of the wreck in the life of the charachters . The plots and the climax is great. I guess everyone loves happy endings , atleast I do and these characters totally deserved it. The fun filled, witty dialogues just add to the charm of the book. And oh! The song and all about inspiration. The book is so good that it actually inspired me enough that I managed to write around two to three songs. And they are some of my best ones yet. Also the songs in the book are great. Very much heartfelt. Just Beautiful.

This book is really amazing. Anyone who likes romance and adventurous stories must read it. Loved it !!!

This book was very interesting and not what I had expected. I was expecting more along the lines of a sweet romance with some character struggles but ultimately a romance. This book is so much better than that. This book showcases themes of abuse, neglect, bullying and suicide. These themes are masterfully born and explained through the mindset of a young adult female who has graduated high school and is now faced with the reality of her inability to change her life for the better, so she feels there is only one way out, suicide. She has been belittled and preyed upon her entire life that like many victims, she feels unwanted and has no place in the world. Her only fortress of solitude is death. Luckily for her, death is not on her side when she is saved from an oncoming train by Rogan, the other main character. He has his own struggles, but nothing compared to Kenna. He is determined to show Kenna that life is worth living and takes her into his life, family, friends, and home. He opens up a whole new world to her. With his help, she begins to enjoy life for the first time. She tries to move forward and put her ugly past behind her, but her past doesn't want to leave her.

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me gives us Rogan - a rich teen who is an up and coming rock star and Kenna, a teen from the wrong side of the tracks who is on the verge of ending her life. Rogan saves Kenna and the story spirals from there where we learn Kenna was adopted (which later turns into a kidnapping case). In theory the book wasn't awful, it was written nicely with no noticeable errors but it did drag on a bit - more so in the beginning/middle. Also there were some parts that I feel needed more development, such as the party where Kenna is drugged and presumably assaulted. Nothing really came of that and I think the author should have dug a bit deeper there so Kenna could get some justice. Then after finding her real parents Kenna attempts suicide again and almost succeeds but pulls through and her and Rogan are all of a sudden living with her rich parents and she has everything a person could ever want. It just feels a bit cheap, essentially saying throwing money at an issue will fix it all. A person who has been depressed and suicidal for months if not years is not going to be suddenly healed like that but I guess that's just book magic.

This was a beautiful heartwarming tale. It didn’t completely go how I expected it to from the synopsis but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Kenna runs away from a shit home and tries to commit suicide by getting ran over by a train. Rogan runs into her (literally) and saves her. Takes the poor girl out for food and brings her home for a comfort long night

This starts a friendship between the two sparked by attraction. He sees the life she comes from. They find out she was adopted and this starts the plot of her looking to find her real family. At the same time her and Rogan are getting closer to one another.

The story is pretty good and full of drama, but it’s the characters that really warm your heart. Rogan is life and will do anything for Kenna. He takes so many personal sacrifices from his own band for her and goes out of the way in looking for her family. Kenna I am partial to. She cries a lot, so sometimes it was a lot to deal with when reading. But when the two of them are together, it just makes the book.

SO many emotions in 1 story!
You know there are books that you just love and could read over and over again? This is one of them.
I received an ARC of this story and I have to say THANK YOU! I truly loved this book. The characters are so real, the emotions shown throughout the book, you'll feel them all; happy, sad, anger, love, scared, lots of tears both happy and sad, and so many more. I loved watching Kenna grow and yet still have that doubt in the back of her mind. Sutton, her mom and her brother Rogan who gave undying love, acceptance, support and a place to stay, only getting the true story bits and pieces at a time of what Kenna had been through. The love between Kenna and Rogan is rare and oh so real. If you've never known or been through what Kenna's life has dealt her, you may not relate, but pick up the book and see how Stacy weaves love, truth, lies, and real life into this loveable characters!

I really liked this book and I didn't think that I would. I normally don't like romance books with main characters that are young- high school or just out, I don't think that they have the life experience to be making life-long major decisions that most MCs do in these books. But the characters, particularly the female lead has been through so many life-changing events already that she has experienced things that most adults will never go through, and should never have to. Before she is able to legally drink she finds out that she has been illegally adopted by who she thought were her parents and that it may not have even been an adoption at all. She deals with all this new information with a young man who saved her when she is almost hit by a train one day after she was thrown out of her house. This is the first book in a series of three, but the others in the series deal with supporting characters from this one, so it can be read as a stand-alone.

Kenna is on the train tracks, wanting to end her horrible life with a mother who left, a father who doesn't care, a stepmother who hates her and an abusive stepbrother when Rogan saves her. He takes her home where she finds people who really care about her but her past doesn't let her alone. When Merle tells her she's adopted she wants to find out the truth about her dead parents. The path to this truth is stony and whenever something bad happens, Kenna feels like it's her fault.. up to the point where she tries to end her life again. This story was hard to read at times because you feel for Kenna and just want to hurt the ones hurting her or worse. Rogan and his sister Sutton become great friends and I'm looking forward to Sutton's story.

A pretty riveting melodrama

This is one of those stories that hooks you in and takes you on a roller coaster ride, and it's not till you've finished after staying up all night reading that you sit back and start processing everything. Or at least that was the case for me.

So in retrospect, I'd say it was a soap opera kind of story, but it was a good one. All the stuff that happened to Kenna was a bit much, but interestingly, the story developed & flowed smoothly enough that my brain didn't pull me out of the story with a "What now?" eyeroll like it normally would. Needless to say, I'm bound to read the sequel now, lol.

Clean romance level: sweet kisses

Potential triggers: verbal and mental abuse, & a depiction of an attempted rape by a sexual abuser

As a disclaimer, I received an advance copy to read and review. That did not influence my review. It took a while to get into the book. But once I was hooked I had to sit and finish it. It has all the characteristics of a good melodrama with a mystery as the kicker. The situations were realistic in this social media world. The descriptions of the characters are built in layers so that the reader gets to know them slowly. My only disappointment was that I figured out the mystery about half way through the book and had to wait until near the end before the characters did. But I suppose that is what a good book does. Keeps the reader on the hook until the end.
As usual Stacy Claflin writes a good story. I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

AN EMOTIONAL, HEARTBREAKING STORY THAT WILL HAVE YOU WANTING MORE

Kenna and Rogan meet when she is at her lowest and wants to end it all. While they try to navigate everything she has been thru, his future, her past, and his band things for them become complicated when her story unfolds and people who are supposed to be friends do the unthinkable. When she makes a decision she has to come to terms with all that is left unsaid and what she has yet to discover. Will she be able to find out the truth? Will Rogan be able to show her the truth and more? An amazing read that will pull every emotion, feeling, and more out and very slowly put it back together. I don't want to say too much but I loved this story and can't wait to read the next.

I love the way this author writes, she knows how to pull you into the story from the very first page to the very end. Then leaves you wanting more. I could not put this book down, I read it in one sitting. Kenna and Rogan what a match made in heaven. Kenna comes form the other side of the tracks from Rogan, but he doesn’t care about any of that. He just is so intrigued with Kenna that he can’t help himself, he wants to get to know her. On the journey in learning about Kenna’s life he is pushed further and further from what he could imagine yet he stayed right there by her side.

You have just got to read this book and all of Stacy Claflin’s books. You will not regret it, trust me!

This is the first time in a long while that it took me forever to finish a book (because I just refuse to DNF any book), but this story just dragged on and on and on. At one point, I was flipping through pages thinking, "blah blah blah". So disappointing.

It started out strong but then it just got tedious to read. It had a choppy flow and it read like a really bad soap opera. The main character is whiny. The love interest is whipped. The conflict is unbelievable. The drama was neverending. The dialogue sounds fake and shallow. I thought it would redeem itself in the end but even the ending felt rushed and like it came out of nowhere.

Glad it's over. Would not recommend.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. I habe to admit, I read the second book before the first one and have been a little afraid that this one is as intense and heartbreaking as the first one. So, I've been kind of releaved that's not the case. Anyway, Rogan literally stumbles over Kenna thinking he rescued her from a very bad choice she made. A very deep story with lots of backround to go from and questions that get more and more by the chapters. You get a vary idea, what went on in Kenna's live, but you have to wait to the very end for all the secrets to be spilled. Great book.
