My American Almost-Royal Cousin #1

The Crown for Castlewood Manor

Rate this book
The English ancestral manor of Cherrywood Hall is ready to compete for selection in an upcoming British TV period drama series: the grounds are manicured, the mansion is polished, and the servants are poised. American heiress Gemma Lancaster Phillips has crossed the pond to help her cousin defeat the three other stately homes vying for the prize.

What Gemma doesn’t realize is that this competition is life or death, and someone is taking that challenge literally. The occupants of one home are killed in an automobile accident, and murder becomes a frequent occurrence at the other locations. Who is behind the mayhem? Selection would be a major coup for both the estate and the community. At first the other contestants seem to be likely suspects, but no one is quite certain as the tragedies continue. Could it even be Emma’s beloved cousin Evan, the surviving heir to the Lancaster fortune, or Kyle, his best friend and estate manager? With the Royal family in attendance at each event, the puzzle becomes a crucial one for Scotland Yard, and they enlist Gemma’s help to solve the mystery.

When the competition’s winner is announced on New Year’s Eve, will Gemma’s future be forever tied to her ancestral past?

Alexander Graham Bell once said that "when one door closes another door opens."  Wise words indeed!  Unfortunately, many people spend so much time lamenting about the closed door that they are unable to see the potential opportunities which the open door presents.  They are mired in regret and refuse to take a risk.  Sad really- because it is the risk-takers who typically reap the grandest rewards.  In Veronica Cline Barton's novel The Crown for Castlewood Manor, we see just such a scenario.  For lovers of suspense and mysteries which contain a very strong female protagonist who is willing to actually take such risks...this is the novel for you!

The story begins with our heroine Dr. Gemma Phillips having arrived at a dramatic crossroad in her life.  Having just finished her Doctorate, she is uncertain about her next step in life.  To make matters worse, she discovers that her boyfriend has been cheating on her.  In a state of heartbreak and confusion she unexpectedly receives an offer from her cousin Evan overseas.  He is hoping to recruit her assistance as he has entered his estate into a magnificent contest.  A number of established English manors have been selected to take part in this contest which will see one of them be selected as the location for a British television series.  Images of Downton Abbey are floating in Evan's head and he desperately needs Gemma's help.

Choosing to throw caution to the wind, Gemma takes up her cousin on his offer.  After all, it will be an exciting adventure on the beautiful and serene English countryside... won't it?  What they all quickly discover however is that this contest is a virtual death match.  Murders are frequently taking place and the victims are all contestants in the competition.  Who could possibly be behind such evil deeds?  It is under this deadly and foreboding cloud that Gemma has to get Cherrywood Hall ready to compete.  Will she be successful in her quest?  Or is she destined to be another victim who will soon join her ancestors in the belly of Cherrywood Hall?

I found this to be a truly wonderful novel which packs a very powerful punch.  It has a little of everything in it.  There is thrilling mystery, adventure, romance and even some paranormal elements sprinkled throughout the pages.  The theme of strength and courage is cleverly supported by the exciting and mysterious nature of the story events.  It is no exaggeration to say that the tale will literally keep you on the edge of your seat.  It is full of suspense and intrigue and I found myself continually reading "one more chapter" to eagerly see what happens next.  To engage the reader in this fashion should be the goal of any great author.

While the plot is entirely thrilling, there is more to this novel than just that.  Barton has a wonderful flow to her writing which is beautiful and descriptive.  She captures the setting of a lavish English manor exceptionally well.  Her descriptions are full of intricate details about fashion, dining, architecture and the aristocracy.  All of this is embedded within the main story and does not come across as forced or unnatural.  I almost felt like I was being transported to the set of Downton Abbey.  A entirely unique and mysterious one however!

In regards to the characters in The Crown for Castlewood Manor, there are quite a few.  They are all quite interesting and developed in a way which supports the overall direction of the book.  However, Dr. Gemma Phillips is the character who develops and grows the most by far.  She is an extremely strong, brave and courageous female protagonist.  Through the use of the First Person Point of View, the reader is able to access her thoughts and internal struggles as she grows in the novel.  Also, the addition of Pippa and the paranormal elements in the story is a masterful stroke which makes for a fascinating connection. between American and British traditions in the Lancaster family.

Overall, I found this to be a top-notch novel which has something in it for almost anyone.  Everything is carefully detailed and presented... and has an air of dignity to it.  I give it my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 Cozy Stars for this one!  *****

Decadent, warm, and quite cozy!

Very vivid descriptions. We visit three country manor homes in competition to be the next “upton park” which is clearly an in universe version of downton Abby. Gemma is a PHD and an American cousin to Evan, an almost royal.

There’s a bit of History. Not too much, and loads of British flair which is great for people like me who would love to visit one day and can’t. For whatever reason.

Pack your bags with your designer clothes and boots. Don’t forget your Tiara! And let us head on a nice trip to Castlewood Manor. Fashion, mystery, intrigue and light romance await you. Oh and maybe, the ghost of your American, almost royal cousin!

As an American Anglophile, I loved the premise of this story: Gemma lives in Malibu, but she travels to the luxurious England home of her cousin Evan, a grand estate called Cherrywood Hall. The estate is one of four in consideration to be the setting for a new period drama TV series, and the producers have organized a series of events for each estate to hold before making their decision. Gemma loves the estate and finds a new love interest, but also comes uncomfortably close to danger. Who is willing to kill in order to win this competition? Or is there another motive involved? This is a wonderful tale for anyone who loves magnificent English houses or cozy mysteries, and Ms. Barton has a gift for describing Gemma's surroundings with flair. I look forward to reading more of her work!

I love a cozy mystery and The Crown for Castlewood Manor by Veronica Cline Barton delivered every element one looks for in this genre. Dr. Gemma Phillips, the main character, has just completed her Ph.D. and deciding the next step toward an academic career when she stumbles upon her boyfriend Michael cheating with another woman, a heartbreak that propels her toward a defining chapter in her life.

When her cousin Evan Lancaster, the eighth Marquess of Kentshire, contacts her about a project involving Cherrywood Hall, his call couldn’t have come at the right time. Cherrywood Hall is being considered for a television period series along with three other estates in the area. He needs Gemma to help them win this competition.

Gemma doesn’t deliberate long, accepting her cousin’s offer to win notoriety for their ancestor’s estate. Remarkably, she’s doing something her ancestor Pippa did when she arrived in the U.K. with wealth to save the failing estate. Are they kindred spirits?

“I was leaving Malibu in a week, becoming the second American cousin in my family to go to Cherrywood Hall to seek a new life. Sometimes history needs to be repeated.”

Gemma arrives at Cherrywood Hall and its magnificent grandeur described exquisitely by Mrs. Barton. Old aristocracy leaps off every page of this story, from the cuisine, clothing, accommodations, hidden rooms within the estate, tea garden parties, formal dinner galas reminiscent of bygone times, and even a fox hunt. Amid pomp and circumstance, a charming man, Kyle, has captured Gemma’s heart. Her cheating ex is a distant thought.

The competition between estates ignites and someone’s desperate to win as murder victims pile up one after the other. Danger is unmistakable in this competition. Someone wants to win at any measure, even murder to achieve the crown and millions of dollars promised as the selected winner. Mrs. Barton has devised a cast of ruthless upper-crust characters who are despicable, outright nasty, others, humorous, and quite lovable. Who among this group is the murderer? Gemma could be the next victim if they don’t find out soon.

What I love most about this story, besides Mrs. Barton’s well-crafted characters are her descriptions of Cherrywood Hall’s secret passages, rooms filled with fancy gowns and treasures, and ephemeral flashes of an ethereal presence watching over Gemma - someone who wants her to achieve the Castlewood crown. The heat of a burgeoning romance is palpable between her and Kyle. An immediate attraction radiates throughout the story.

A beautiful, intelligent woman, a handsome love interest, grand manor, glittery affairs, murder and mayhem, and a mystery to unfold. What else can you ask for in this well-written, cozy mystery? I’m looking forward to book two of the series - seeing Gemma’s new life unfold, her romance with Kyle, and Cherrywood Hall’s outcome. I highly recommend The Crown for Castlewood Manor.

The Crown for Castlewood Manor: My American Almost-Royal Cousin Series possesses mystery, murder, and romance; all with a twist of British mystique. Veronica Cline Barton presents us with Gemma Lancaster Phillips, who just experienced two major events in her life; receiving her doctorate degree and ending her relationship with the man she had been dating for the last two years. Then Evan, her British cousin, asks her to come over to help them win a competition to use Cherrywood Hall in a new TV series. As the competition becomes deadly, the killer becomes baffled at the protection Gemma appears to have at all times. Some would say she has a guardian angel, those from Cherrywood Hall believe Aunt Pippa's ghost has been looking out for her.

I found The Crown for Castlewood Manor mysteriously thrilling. Written as a mystery, this novel keeps you in suspense until the very end as to who could be the killer, or killers. This doesn't just hold one mystery but the reader will find they are eager to discover hidden riches, secretive tunnels, proper romance, and of course; which estate actually wins the competition. Veronica Cline Barton does an excellent job combining American and British traditions in this family, though the touch of a devoted ghost gives this a classic feel. The relationship between the Lancaster family reflex a close family tie, though they are separated by an ocean. Their love and protection for each other is unusual, as it is lacking in the other families. Barton artfully twisted the end of the book, leaving the reader delighted when all the loose ends were revealed.

This was a glamorously mysterious, funny and entertaining read. I would liken it to Clue meets a a modern Downton Abbey.

It all starts in Malibu as Dr. Gemma Lancaster Phillips, is out celebrating her newly awarded PhD when she stumbles upon her boyfriend with another female. As chance would have it, her actress mother, Jillian, and her British cousin, Evan, convince her to get away and head to England to assist him in making his estate the venue for a new highly anticipated British television series, Castlewood Manor.

What follows is a story of murder, intrigue, conspiracy, greed, romance, and drama. Ms. Barton takes her readers to beautifully built English manors, immaculate gardens, into the vault of centuries old dresses and jewels, through quaint English villages and gives you a sneak peek inside the lap of luxury on this tour of aristocratic British life. Lovely meals are had and mystery abounds as Gemma and Evan along with a cast of fun and lovable characters strive to win the Crown for Castlewood Manor as the steep competition starts to turn deadly.

This book had it all, and I enjoyed both the story and picturesque setting as I was swept away by the history, murder mystery, and love interest that developed. The characters were funny, endearing and realistic and the plot was well paced. I especially enjoyed the legacy of Aunt Pippa. If you enjoy history, murder mysteries and love stories, this book is for you.

Being a fan of British TV shows, especially Downton Abbey, when I read the blurb, I knew this was the perfect book to take me away.

Gemma’s life is at a crossroads. Living in Malibu, California, she’s just earned her doctoral degree and the possibilities are endless. When she finds her boyfriend has been cheating on her, the crossroads get a bit more twisty … fast. So, when Gemma is presented with an opportunity to go to England and help her cousin compete for the opportunity to have her ancestral home, Cherrywood Manor, become the setting for a new British period drama series, Gemma welcomes the opportunity.

Once she arrives, the memory of her cheating boyfriend begins to fade, especially as she meets Kyle, and the mutual attraction is immediate. But just as Gemma’s new life begins to take hold, people begin to die … but only those whose properties are also in the competition. The first death appears to be a tragic accident, but then it becomes clear that everyone is in danger, including Gemma.

The book is colorfully descriptive and captures all of the trappings of aristocratic life very well … the countryside, the homes, the lavish meals, the jewelry, tiaras, gowns and much more. The author writes these details so beautifully that I felt as if I were watching the story unfold, rather than reading.

The mystery was very clever and multi-faceted … and I was happily kept on edge wondering what would happen next … and to whom. Beautifully written, this was a light, but intriguing and delightful read.

Calling all Anglophiles! Here is a dream book for you and the best news is that it’s now a series, currently at three books. The action starts immediately in The Crown for Castlewood Manor, the first book in the series. We meet Gemma, a California girl from Malibu who is a competent young women with a newly-minted Doctorate.

Gemma tells her story in the first person. As she explains, her family is a bit different from the everyday American lineage, as there is an American, as well as a titled English branch of the family. Gemma’s great-great Aunt Pippa went to England at the turn of the 20th century and married an aristocrat. Gemma’s mother is an actress in America, so the American side of the family has some star power, too.

Gemma has broken up with her boyfriend and is sorting out her career options, when an exciting opportunity opens up for her. The British side of her family is involved in a competition to choose the next grand home for a television show, called “Castlewood Manor”, reminiscent of “Downton Abbey”. Gemma is off to Cherrywood Hall to work with her cousin, Evan, the current Marquess of Kentshire to prepare the Hall to win the prize. The Marquess is modern and forward-thinking. Gemma, Evan and Kyle, the estate manager work well together in developing great ideas to showcase their home. And is there also a bit of supernatural help from great-great Aunt Pippa?

Readers, you will love reading about life in a country manor. All the special and grand events that are part of the competition are described in stunning detail, as are the treasures of the Hall, including the collections of gems and vintage designer garments. You will even get to meet a “royal” or two. You will also enjoy the beginnings of the relationship between Gemma and Kyle. Kyle wants to teach Gemma the art of “proper cuddling”.

But, in the midst of all this beauty and elegance, several murders occur. Is someone trying to sabotage the competition? Not only does the author give us beautiful scenes about England, and some warm romantic moments, but she also ramps up the mystery part of the plot, too. Good thing that Gemma has great-great Aunt Pippa looking on from her large portrait to guide her.

You can look forward to getting your “Anglophile fix” along with a fun story with this new series. I also loved the cover- just like how I pictured Gemma!

In this sleek mystery by Ms. Barton, we’re soon swept away from the relaxed, pretty beaches of Malibu. We’re introduced to a wholly different environment when we cross the pond and find ourselves in an elegant estate in England. Unlike many of the money poor estates of the UK, Castlewood Manor is thriving. It’s so lavishly restored and breathtaking that it’s being considered for a grand television series.

A beautiful and bright American, Dr. Gemma Lancaster Phillips, is invited to England to help her cousin, Evan, win the competition. Gemma is well suited for the job since she just wrote her doctorate dissertation on some of her family’s history. She’s also been recently betrayed by her boyfriend. After careful consideration of how to proceed with her life, Gemma decides to accept her cousin’s offer. Thus begins a rich, satisfying and often dangerous adventure not only for Gemma, but for the reader too!

We’re given a beautifully written description of the many grand aspects of upper class living. We’re introduced to a majestic main building with spectacular grounds, including magnificent views of the sea, and richly appointed rooms. There are also wonderful accounts of other aspects of this type of lifestyle. Exquisite gowns and jewels, extravagant feasts, and horseback riding on splendid steeds. However, our strong, protagonist, Gemma, quickly discovers that all is not nice and proper when dealing with some of the landed gentry. The violent side of Castlewood’s fierce competitors becomes very clear when people start dying.

“The Crown for Castlewood Manor” has all the elements needed to make this an engaging read, one that includes a page-turner mystery and a lovely romance. Its well-written characters, including some who seem to be lurking on the other side of the veil, will keep you guessing. Who can be trusted and who’s out for blood? There are surprises right up to the end! A five star whodunit with lots of charm and sophistication thrown in!

"Our friends called us, The Muses of Malibu."

The Crown for Castlewood Manor begins in a modern landscape of love lost, the glittering world of Malibu and a woman named Gemma who discovers that after improving her life and earning her PhD, she alienates her romantic partner, simply by being strong and achieving her goals. I adored how Gemma was written as smart, genuine, savvy and stylish. More characters like this for women please!

The story seamlessly morphs into a cozy, British mystery surrounding Cherrywood Manor, the family castle in England, a larger than life cousin named Pippa who left a legacy of luxury, beauty and mystery in her wake years before.

The cheeky humor about vanity, secret weakness, and inappropriate behavior was so much fun!

"Francis was standing and pointing at his now dead father, but his scream had turned to hysterical laughter. Lady Sarah collapsed, her head falling into her slice of cream pie." The studies on life for the aristocracy were well researched, as more characters came out in the fierce competition for one castle in the district to become the backdrop for a new TV show.

All of the ingredients needed for a cozy were present, a country village, a lavish estate, a smart main character needing answers, a handsome man present at just the right moments to circumvent danger and multiple motives for murder as the death toll goes higher. The parties, food presentations, even the imagery and fashion choices were perfectly cultivated for escapism and enjoyment.

This novel was delightful to read and I highly recommend to cozy mystery aficionados and lovers of women's fiction where the female characters can hold their own and make their own way in the world.

I can’t recommend The Crown for Castlewood Manor highly enough! For this Anglophile, having an American, Gemma, travel to the UK to a manor with all the wonderful elements of aristocracy, manors, royals, lavish dresses and meals, I was completely filled with joy while reading this fantastic novel. I recently had my first trip to the UK and it brought back all the memories of that fabulous trip. The author is highly descriptive of scenes, transporting me right back into the beautiful country. She also did a wonderful job of bringing to life the characters, food, and oh those gorgeous dresses and tiaras!

In addition to her excellent characterization of all things British, the story itself is captivating. A murder mystery (there could be more than one) in the midst of a competition between manors for the chance to have a Downton Abbey-esque show filmed on their estate. While the competition heats up and the entrants throw lavish hunts, dinners, teas and more, the stakes are raised when someone ends up dead. The fact that our heroine, Gemma, also seems to be on the hit list when a car tries to run her off the road. But it doesn’t phase her, Gemma is a strong, determined woman to see this competition through. Her cousin had requested her help, and she would be there for him, come what may.

I was also giddy with the romance in this wonderful story. Gemma finds a perfect gentleman in Kyle, who is also helping with the competition. It’s a sweet romance that I absolutely adored and the “proper kisses” made me swoon!

There are more elements to this story than just mystery, romance, and competition, but I’ll leave that to the reader to discover, because there are some great surprises.

For anyone who loves all things British like I do, this one’s a must-read. I absolutely loved it and am thrilled to know there are more in the series!

This book starts out with a devastating discovery and a dream that dies in the span of a few gut-wrenching seconds. But this main character (Gemma) has moxie, and she's not going to let a little thing like a two-timing fiancé destroy her future.

When Gemma gets an offer from her almost-royal British cousin to come to England and help his estate win a prestigious competition to host a new British tv period drama, she happily takes on the challenge and the game is afoot, so to speak.

But when Gemma arrives in England, it isn't long before everyone begins to realize that there's more at stake here than just hosting the tv show: lives are at stake, too, and someone will stop at nothing to sabotage the competitors.

This is an absolutely delightful cozy mystery that has everything an Anglophile will love: a gorgeous estate with breathtaking grounds, an impressive royal connection, a certain dreamy romantic interest, the world's greatest dress-up collection, horses, and of course, murder. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great cozy mystery.

Veronica Cline Barton took me on a wonderful journey filled with food, wine, and gala events. This cozy mystery is filled with suspense, and wonder, with a hint of ghostly appearances. It’s been a long time since I read a mystery like this. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Word of caution: don’t read on an empty stomach, because the Lancaster’s know how to prepare a meal, and bring a glass of wine, because they also know how to have a good time.

I’m looking forward to reading book 2 and 3. Barton kept the pages turning.

I love a murder mystery, so I was sold on the concept of Gemma Phillips visiting the UK from the USA and getting embroiled in a classic English Country House mystery. The writing is wonderful, the settings sumptuous, and the characterizations ring with a veracity which make the books easy to visualize, and play in your head like a movie. I particularly like the Gemma as a protagonist, and she was a perfect foil for a tale of history, legacy, murder, double-dealing, and a lovely spark of romance. Highly recommended.

“SLAP! I’m out of here. How could you! Oh, I can’t believe what he did to me after how long we’ve been together. And we had plans, plans to—”
But, it could be the best thing that ever happened to young Dr. Gemma Phillips. Will she find new love? Tall dark and handsome…
From the beaches of California, travel east to England, to Castlewood Manor for the by-chance, breathtaking chance of a lifetime! Gemma will experience what most people only dream of. The Crown for Castlewood Manor: My American Almost-Royal Cousin Series, by Veronica Cline Barton, was one of the most intensely colorful, and tasty, yes, tasty novels I’ve ever devoured. The author employs her words elegantly. She’ll pique your every sense with colors, smells, sounds, and especially taste, as well as some very handsome steaminess, for those who, as I mentioned above, love the tall dark and handsome. And she does so flawlessly. My mind was lighting up like fifty Christmas trees, then given surge after power surge after the unexpected happened again and again.
I lived a life of royalty for the five days I savored this book. From basic ol’ tea and scones (pronounced “scons,” as I learned from the author) to some of the most delectable dishes imaginable. I was put into a “food coma” (author’s words), many times while reading. Food for prestigious royalty but also, much, much more. Imagine the best dresses, boots, gems and semiprecious stones, and ghosts, yep, perhaps…ghosts! (And I won’t name ‘ghost’ names).
Tasty treats, sensual feels and “proper” kisses many times over. Indulge yourself in Veronica’s prose, which is some of the cleanest, most descriptive writing I’ve ever had the pleasure of reveling in.
And it goes like this… Gemma arrives. The glitz and glam of beach life, magnified 100 fold at Castlewood Manner. And then, skulduggery! The adventure of a lifetime begins, and so do some pretty bad, even fatal occurrences. Who did it? Why? No one plays to lose, and some, well…
It’s a grandiose competition dreams cannot even fabricate, but who knew it would be such a cut-throat contest. Gemma is invited to England to help plan the events, royal dinners and more. And with her American spunk and desire to win, will Castlewood Manner win the spotlight? Or will they all give up when the heat gets just too hot.
Gemma’s adventures include hunting on horseback, fancy dinners, jaunts in the English countryside, fabulous outings and planning, planning, and more planning, and getting run off the road, and even… And tall boots and fancy dresses, handsome men and gorgeous women. And scheming that gets way to close for comfort, even bloody. But who? And why?
Again, I’m not saying. And you’ll never guess. Even though, like me, you might think you know before the end. You won’t. The secrets of Castlewood Manner run deep. There’s trick buttons and hidden rooms, secret doors and vaults filled with riches, and good and bad to wonderful, then hatchet-in-the-air harrowing close calls and cliff falls. Slap to start, slap to end. It was perfect.
When I write a review and declare it gets 5 stars on both Amazon and my site, that means it was good. That means it really gets 5 stars. Veronica Cline Barton’s The Crown for Castlewood Manor gets 5 stars across the board. Do not pass on this title! And as for me, I am anxiously looking forward to the next in the series.

What a delightful treat! Told through the eyes of an intelligent Dr. Gemma Phillips, ‘Castlewood Manor’ first unfolds on the beaches of California and then sweeps the reader into the foothills of English countryside. On the surface, the story has an airy, light comfortable feeling through Gemma’s perception as she meets her English family and learns about her role in upcoming competition. However, the story brilliantly takes a darker leap as it becomes a murder mystery, echoing the likes of Agatha Christie.
‘Castlewood Manor’ successfully pulls the reader in page by page. Barton’s prose is incredibly perfected through the images of the English countryside, history of the manor and the character’s well-crafted dialogue. I enjoyed the subtleties within the concise, crisp details--such as Gemma touching her family heirloom dresses in the wardrobe closet--which brought an authentic richness to the story. In addition, Barton offers a spectacular glimpse into the British aristocracy. Her characters indirectly make it less pretentious, and pay homage to the English family histories. I truly enjoyed Barton’s novel from the very first page and I could not put it down. Like any great writer, Barton does leave beautiful breadcrumbs for future books in the series. Can’t wait to read Book 2!

Veronica Cline Barton’s English cozy mystery spans two continents and details the affluent beach lifestyle of Malibu, California and the wealthy, but more staid gentry of Cherrywood Hall on the outskirts of England’s Maidenford Village.

Dr. Gemma Phillips, a young woman who has just completed her doctoral degree believes the world is about to be her oyster. Unfortunately, bad quickly follows good as she discovers her boyfriend of two years has been cheating on her.

With nothing tying her to Malibu, Gemma’s life takes a drastic change in direction. Her British cousin, Evan Lancaster, now the eighth Marquess of Kentshire, asks her to travel to England to help with an important project. Cherrywood Hall, owned by Evan’s mother, is in the running to be chosen as the filming location for a new British television series, Castlewood Manner. Cherrywood Hall is one of four finalists in the competition. Being chosen as the series's filming location will pump much-needed money, attention and public interest into Cherrywood Hall.

Gemma’s doctoral thesis, “Twentieth - Century Reunification of British and American Aristocratic Families with the Influx of American Heiress Inheritances,” and her knowledge of combining, presenting, and organizing both new and archival materials makes her the perfect person to assist with the competition.

But someone isn’t playing fair. Throughout the competition, Gemma is stalked, threatened, and injured by an unknown assailant. Worse, residents and owners of the other competing houses are injured, frightened, and even murdered. Gemma’s saving grace, literally, is the ghost of her twice-great aunt, American heiress Pippa Lancaster.

With all the action, skullduggery, and detailed descriptions of English country life, romance is not forgotten. What an absolute delight to read! Not being a particular fan of whodunits of the cosy mystery variety, but an avid fan of Downton Abbey, my curiosity was piqued and I’m so pleased that I bought this book. It certainly lived up to its many glowing reviews and kept me enthralled from start to finish.
I loved the main character, Dr. Gemma Phillips, a gutsy American girl from Malibu, California, who has family connections with the British aristocracy – the subject of the dissertation for her recently acquired PhD.
When her boyfriend of 2 years suddenly dumps her, and feeling undecided about her future, Gemma takes the plunge and travels to England at the request of her cousin, Evan, the 8th Marquis of Cherrywood Hall. Along with three others, his estate is a contender for the filming of a new TV series ‘Castlewood Manor’ and he needs Gemma’s expertise to help them win. There is a lot at stake, but no-one is prepared for the lengths their rivals will go to in a bid to gain the crown - least of all murder!
The tension heightens when the death toll starts to rise and two of the contenders are out of the running. Who will be next? And is Gemma’s life in danger, too? These are questions for the reader to ponder amidst the frantic preparations as the deadline for the competition draws near.
The author has done her homework well, transporting us into the magnificent ancestral homes of the British aristocracy and giving us a taste of their opulent lifestyle. She captures all the trappings of wealth with aplomb, her eloquent descriptions bringing to life the sheer grandeur of the place and the sights and smells, including the excellent cuisine that made my mouth water. I loved her use of the word ‘toasty’ when describing the warmth of the bedrooms after the fires had been lit.
There is romance in the air, a host of likeable characters and a smattering of wit that runs throughout the story, giving the book its feel-good factor. Well written and highly entertaining, this is definitely not one to be missed.

A young American woman named Gemma Alexandra Lancaster Philips decides to visit her ancestors in Britain. One of her distant and late aunts had married into the British aristocracy back in the 1930s. Her related Brit family estate is competing for the rights to have a new and hopefully popular TV saga filmed on location at their grounds. Such a project would increase revenue for running the vast family mansion and grounds. With TV revenue and an increase in visitor attraction, such a win would be a lucrative deal and set the estate’s financial balance in good order for the foreseeable future.

The estate is known as Castlewood Manor. This is the first story of my American Almost Royal Cousin Series. Gemma is persuaded by her actor mother to go over to Britain and help her aristocratic cousins win the competition. She leaves behind her Malibu house and cheating boyfriend and begins a new adventure with her dashing cousins, Kyle and Evan to win the important TV competition.

The problem is, there are other aristocratic estates participating in the competition too. And there is a complete lack of British sportsmanship about the whole affair. The dirty tricks are being pulled out of the bag in the most ghastly of ways. The coveted prize knows no bounds. For even the diabolical murder of participants is entertained.

Gemma and her cousins must walk a tight line as the competition progresses. Even when the Queen and other members of the Royal family attended functions, foul play is still lurking for the participants. We have the typical English cad and the rude obnoxious Brit rich bitch all thrown into the mix.

If you enjoy Cluedo board game style Murder Mystery or Hercule Poirot etc, I think you will enjoy this. One of the things we all do is to try and see if we can guess the murderer. Then when we find out, we all think ‘Oh blast!’

Well, I never see the end coming the way it did. I don’t think you will either. A very enjoyable read.

This beautifully written, cozy mystery with a captivating cast of characters is a delightful read that takes Gemma Phillips from her beach bungle along the California coast to the ancestral manor of Cherrywood Hall in England where the castle is competing in a competition for selection in an upcoming British TV period drama. Tragedy strikes and participants in the contest began to die under suspicious circumstances. Despite the danger, contestants carry on for the crown and selection in the TV series. Author Veronica Cline Barton swept me into each scene with her vivid descriptions of the manors, the food, the clothes and jewels and the budding romance Gemma finds with the dashing Kyle. The next books in the series are on my reading list.

Alexander Graham Bell once said that "When one door closes another door opens."

Wise words indeed! Unfortunately, many people spend so much time lamenting about the closed door that they are unable to see the potential opportunities that the open door presents. They are mired in regret and refuse to take a risk. Sad really- because it is the risk-takers who typically reap the grandest rewards.

In Veronica Cline Barton's novel The Crown for Castlewood Manor, we see just such a scenario. For lovers of suspense and mysteries, that contain a very strong female protagonist who is willing to actually take such risks...this is the novel for you!

The story begins with our heroine Dr. Gemma Phillips having arrived at a dramatic crossroads in her life. Having just finished her Doctorate, she is uncertain about her next step. To make matters worse, she discovers that her boyfriend has been cheating on her.

In a state of heartbreak and confusion, she unexpectedly receives an offer from her cousin Evan overseas.

After all, it will be an exciting adventure in the beautiful and serene English countryside...

I found this to be a truly wonderful novel that packs a very powerful punch.

Her descriptions are full of intricate details about fashion, dining, architecture, and the aristocracy.

All of this is embedded within the main story and does not come across as forced or unnatural. I almost felt like I was being transported to the set of Downton Abbey. A entirely unique and mysterious one, however!

In regards to the characters in The Crown for Castlewood Manor, there are quite a few. They are all quite interesting and developed in a way that supports the overall direction of the book. However, Dr. Gemma Phillips is the character who develops and grows the most by far. She is an extremely strong, brave and courageous female protagonist. Through the use of the First Person Point of View, the reader is able to access her thoughts and internal struggles as she grows in the novel. Also, the addition of Pippa and the paranormal elements in the story is a masterful stroke that makes for a fascinating connection between American and British traditions in the Lancaster family.

Overall, I found this to be a top-notch novel that has something in it for almost anyone. Everything is carefully detailed and presented... and has an air of dignity to it. I give it my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 Cozy Stars for this one!

The Crown for Castlewood Manor by Veronica Cline Barton is not the first book by Barton that I have read. I jumped around in the series and thought it would be advantageous to read her first book in the 'My American Almost-Royal Cousin Series, and I'm glad I did. Barton fully fleshed out her main character's life and the historical background of Cherrywood Hall, which deepened the storyline.
It begins with Gemma Phillips and her friend Greta Hastings meeting for dinner at a swank Malibu restaurant to celebrate completing their PhD degrees at the University of California and discuss where they would go from here. Gemma vacillated between which college she would attend, but the decision was difficult because of her boyfriend, Michael West. However, during their meal, Gemma's friend spotted Michael with another woman.
This unexpected turn of events would alter her decision, especially when her mother informed her that her cousin Evan, a British Marquess from Kentshire, was trying to contact her with a challenging proposal: to use the estate for a new television series, Castlewood Manor. There was a moment's hesitation in deciding, partly because of her PhD, which offered a promising career. It was the safe choice, but she chose to take the risk. I love risk takers, and Batron's main character, Gemma, walks in those shoes, or should I say those boots, as Gemma has a passion for them. She's a strong, adventurous character who is willing to step out into the unknown and take the reins, moving forward with confidence.
The Crown for Castlewood Manor is many-faceted, with just the right amount of romance, mystery, and a smattering of the supernatural. Barton's descriptive prose is top-notch. She draws you into a world most people never experience. I felt as if I were right there amid all the glamour. Veronica is one of the best storytellers I've read. A five-star winner!

Escape with this 'cosy' British mystery series written by American author Veronica Cline Barton. The plot is based around a competition to choose an English stately home to feature as the location for a TV drama series, to be called 'Castlewood Manor'. In book 1 we meet the aristocratic family of the Marquess of Kentshire who occupy Cherrywood Hall, one of the competition finalists. The story is narrated by Dr Gemma Phillips, an American cousin of the Marquess, who is helping her family handle the events they must arrange to prove their suitability as winners of the competition, and hopefully gain a great degree of widespread publicity. The cosy, wholesome story soon becomes darker when key characters involved in the competition die or are injured under mysterious or suspicious circumstances. The author pays great attention to details and the characters really come to life with her almost photographic descriptions. Strongly driven by dialogue, the story moves along at a good pace with plenty of events to keep you entertained. It was pure escapism to read of the luxurious lifestyles with the sumptuous venues, lavish meals, antique jewels and costumes, fine wines, well bred horses and just a hint of romance. The assorted and flawed human characters from the acting and filming profession are combined with the English aristocracy to make for a highly entertaining plot. If you enjoy a wholesome story that keeps you engrossed then this 'cosy' mystery is definitely worth your time.

'The Crown for Castlewood Manor' is a delightful piece of hands-across-the-water transatlantic whismsy - one might almost say Lord Peter Wimsey, because the author's love of the traditional English whodunnit shines through. What starts off as a genteel contest to bag a location filming prize soon turns dark, and the body count quickly climbs. If you like your cosy mysteries with a dash of the tall, dark and handsome, and with elements of sly humour, then this novel is likely for you. Good stuff, elegantly put together, excellent pacing and relatable characters. The narrator, Gemma is a delight, and I loved the names dreamed up by Veronica Cline Barton for the titled aristocracy - especially Lord and Lady Paunchley. Lots of some good old-fashioned Anglo-Saxon grandeur!
And how can you resist a book with this description in it: "He lay on the table where he'd fallen, his eyes staring wide open. His tongue protruded hideously from his gaping mouth."
All-in-all, a delicious melange of strychnine, bullets, shepherds pie, horses, and chaps shouting, "Hear-hear!"
Have I piqued your curiosity yet?
A great beach read, or something to curl up with on a rainy night in front of the fire. Or, indeed, anywhere.

What a pleasure to settle in to crisp autumn weather in the gorgeous English countryside! Gemma Phillips' visit to her cousin, Lord Evan Lancaster, is a dream come true in book form. Evan's close friend Kyle is a welcome, and worthy, distraction for Gemma after a sudden break-up back home in Malibu right on the heels of celebrating her PhD.

Stately homes with manicured gardens, sumptuous food, wine, and furnishings create an opulent backdrop for the serious business of competition between estates for the prize of hosting the Castlewood Manor television series. Handsome men and glamorous women, sea-swept shorelines, and luxurious cars are in ample supply as the deviousness unfolds and fear tightens its grip on those at Cherrywood Hall. Is risking their lives worth winning the competition? Measure in a few snotty aristocrats and you have a delicious counterpoint to the Lancasters.

The continuity of life within a family through the centuries is reflected in the two branches of the Lancaster family as they come together on English soil. And a mischievous matriarchal ghost adds a little spice! Sink into the soft, supple leather of a first class tour through fabulous mansions, royals, and stunning parties!

Wow, royal families really know how to throw a party. No matter where the competition events were being held, pandemonium was soon to erupt.

Shots fired. Drinks poisoned. Suspicious car accidents.

Who was the killer and was he or she working alone?

This was not a simple murder mystery book. Veronica Cline Barton (the author) will have you guessing right up until the end when Chief Inspector Marquot explains all the motives behind each illegal act.

BTW: I would be shocked to know any reader was 100% correct in all the who’s and why’s of this multiple murder mystery.

I do have some bit of advice before you crack open this book. Grab snacks!

Veronica mentioned food so many times that I was starving by the time I finished the book. 🙂

Good luck, super sleuths!

“The question isn’t who’s going to let me; it’s who’s going to stop me.”
Ayn Rand
Gemma, our protagonist, embodies the best that women, strong, motivated, calculated risk-takers, and independent, can achieve through perseverance, fortitude, and a will to go and do what some may not-
Ms. Barton has created a magnificent tale that takes you from sunny California to the shores of England. An educated heiress she possesses qualities, both believable and engaging. This tale is so masterfully written and abounds with ‘one feels as though they’re part of the ambiance and action’ of it all.
It is rife with great intrigue, sly/sardonic humor, and a gripping look at The seedier side of evil. Murders abound and, Gemma rises to answer questions and seek out the deviants responsible. Romance? Yes. (No spoilers here).
Ms. Barton’s descriptive form of writing, dialogue, and carefully woven murder/mystery with romantic nuances, will have you turning Page after page! Outstanding!

Wow!

What an awesome tale of murder, magic, love, mystery, romance, a ghost or two, the magic of royalty and Hollywood thrown into a mix of grand proportions fit for a king and queen. The opulence of an English manor hall decked out with more baubles and finery that rivals any castle, the lot of vintage clothing finely stored, the jewels and tiaras aplenty mixed with village life and real life of love, loss, jealousy, and intense rivalry makes for the perfect English romance, mystery, and muder. Did I write about the delectable foods? Five stars.
