We'll Meet Again

Rate this book
Now in its third year, World War II still rages, taking its toll on everyone. On the home-front, the Mulligans continue to face war-related challenges . . . and patience wears thin.

Margaret is pulled in various directions as she attempts to care for her toddler and disabled husband Brian, who’s haunted by mistakes made on the battlefield—and their marriage is put to the test. Colleen is still pursuing her Hollywood career, but will the arrival of her baby change everything? And with Navy pilots being shot down daily, will Geoff escape the odds and make it safely home?

Bridget still serves as an Army nurse in the Pacific front, where not only her life, but health and heart are in harm’s way. Molly continues to do her part to help her family and find her place in the world, but when her relationship with Patrick gets shaken to the core, she heads off on a journey that leaves her family conflicted.

The war will eventually end, but will the Mulligan family remain intact when it does?

Adultery is okay, but having a male friend isn’t.

In this book, Margaret develops a friendship with a neighbor – a male neighbor – and it’s treated like she committed adultery. However, men who actually commit adultery are forgiven and the women who don’t immediately forgive them are judged and reprimanded. Uh, excuse me??? It was terribly mixed up. In addition, there was just too much unnecessary drama between Margaret and her husband – not even related to the adultery incident – and the content SOARED in this one.

Content: 4/5. Multiple mentions of marital relations/when and how a married couple had sex/etc. A character commits adultery and then talks about it when his wife, giving her a complete account of the event. It’s glossed over. Meanwhile, Margaret’s friendship with a man which resulted in no inappropriate behavior is blown out of proportion, and this is what causes the break in their marriage. Um, excuse me?

3.5 stars. The war is coming to an end--Margaret is dealing with her toddler and her newly returned and disabled husband who is struggling with guilt, Colleen is balancing her career with her new baby and waiting for Geoff, and Molly's photography career takes off in unexpected directions. More enjoyable for the setting than the stories, as usual. Margaret still gets very little authorial sympathy--somehow it's okay for her husband to cheat on her, but everyone viewed her as an adulterer when she had a male friend. Colleen resents giving Margaret any breaks. Patrick was a total ass to Molly, which affected Margaret, too. And most big things happen off page. But Molly's ultimate journey was fascinating, and I'm so glad she got her opportunities. Hopefully Margaret's life is going to improve--though probably not as much as it would if she moved out of town. Bridget had a role in this, but I do honestly wonder why she was included in this series at all; I think it would have been perfectly fine with just the three sisters. Colleen is so young, only 20, and I hope she was able to continue her career and didn't get stuck in a stay at home role that wouldn't suit her temperament at all. I'm glad I was able to finish the series!

As I come to the conclusion of The Mulligan Sisters series, I am sad to part ways with the Mulligan family. At times, it felt like I was right there with their family, they seem so real. This series was set in the 1940's, during World War II, and being that I love history of any era, I really enjoyed learning more about that era. One of the things that I really liked that the author did was, that, the titles of the books coincided with the plot of each story, and at the end of each story, she ended the plot with the characters singing or stating the words of the title. As a matter of fact, each title was the name of an actual song that was popular during that time. I had to look up the songs, and I loved them, and bought them. They were songs sung by popular artists such Vera Lynn, Frank Sinatra, etc. along with big bands like Glenn Miller. Whenever I listen to these songs, I will think of the Mulligan sisters and their family, their struggles and yet they triumphed throughout the war years.
I highly recommend this book!

World War II continues affecting everyone's lives in many different ways. Margaret's husband Brian has survived, but lost his leg in a battle. He is depressed and pushes his family away. Colleen is expecting a baby. She worries about Geoff knowing that pilots have dangerous jobs. Bridget has health problems which she tries to ignore. But eventually she is forced to take time off to care for herself. Molly shows tremendous strength and wisdom beyond her years by taking on many jobs and challenges. Her relationship with Patrick gets rocky. It is difficult to communicate through quick letters and mail grams. She tells herself to move on and forget about him. Finally the war is drawing to a close. Will the Mulligan family survive and see peace return to the world?

Everyone ended up happy in the end, although they all suffered so much heartbreak. I enjoyed the series, felt like I got a good taste of the war, even though the story felt a little choppy at times.
I felt like in keeping with the times, they did many things that were not really something that I would think was good. Margaret's marriage, she was judged for not "fixing things" and hid her husband's infidelity, yet was judged for being grouchy and not trying hard enough to fix things, and blamed for her short friendship with a male friend. I thought it was sad, but so accurate to what it was like.

This was a good series. I enjoyed reading about the Mulligan sisters- they only complaints I have are that there are 4 sisters and 4 books so you would think that each book would be based on one sisters story withe the other 3 as secondary but for some reason Bridget only got about a chapters worth in the first book and the same in the 4th. So why not just have 3 sisters? And sometimes I could have done with a little less of Margaret and her “woe is me” attitude. But other than those two things, I found the stories entertaining. I like most book’s written by Ms Carlson.

I love Melody Carlson books she can write any book for any age group and any style and still be a the greatest author. This series The Mulligan Sisters is also that way. I don't usually read a lot based on the WWI or WWII time period but she made is very interesting and I could hardly wait to read the next book in the series. You can never be disappointed in a Melody Carlson book. I can't wait for the next one but looks like I may have to.

Well here we are - the last book in the fantastic Mulligan Sisters series! I was very pleased with how the story ended, and although I still don't like Margaret she didn't bother me as much in this one. Molly and Colleen are still my favorites, but I wish we had gotten to "know" Bridget better because I find her to be such a mystery.

All in all, this was a great series and I'm going to miss these characters.

Couldn't put this series down.

I took a chance with this series (I've read all four books) and after the first book I just couldn't wait to get the second book then the third and finally this book which completed the series. These books are light reading at its best. If you like books dealing with the home front during WW2, you'll certainly enjoy these. You must begin with the first book of the series in order to fully enjoy the whole story.

Happy endings

The final installment in the Mulligan Sisters has you guessing till the end. The series ending was really good. The many comments about the war in a negative light considering why we were at war during that time bothered me. It made it hard for me to read at times, but know that many people in that time felt the same as the characters. Good story line and ended great.

Beautiful series

I don't often write reviews, but this series captured my heart. The series follows the Mulligans sisters through WWII, a time unlike any other. After so many years, the uncertainty and trials of that time are difficult to grasp. I am sad that this exciting adventure is over and will miss the sisters, but I'm excited to read more from this author.

The 4 sisters all have interesting stories

All 4 sisters are at passages in their lives. The war was still active and most of their lives were turned upside down. Seems like all will be lost. Read to see how our girls lives change. Thoroughly enjoyed the four books.

I enjoyed the continuation of the main characters
And loved the story. Anyone would enjoy her writing. It seems as though it is the story of the girl next door. Will certainly read more of her writing.

Life on the Home Front

I am reviewing the series. I read all 4 books which I felt gave us a taste of what those WWII years were like for those on the home front. Thanks Miss Carlson for this glimpse of what those days may have been.

I came into this series on the 4th book of the Mulligan Sisters so I missed a lot and therefore never really got into this book, next time I'll start at the beginning.

We'll meet again

I chose this rating because although this book was very interesting I liked the first and third Mulligans Sisters Books more because they held my interest more. The characters were getting a bit maudlin and as the war dragged on, there was mote than a gripping. It is fun though to follow the olives of Colleen and Margaret in motherhood.

Loved this book and the continuing saga of the sisters. It’s fast paced and easy to read. I always find WW II plots very intriguing. Have now books 3 & 4 - and my library has the first 2 books of the series. I have them on hold. I am a happy camper. So interesting to read all about the four sisters.

Man, what an emotional, realistic story. This brought home All aspects of WWII. It covered Hitler's reign as well as Japan's relentless pursuit of power. From pilots, submarine sailors, nurses in the South Pacific and photojournalism in Europe.
