Mystic Notch #6

Whisker of a Doubt

Rate this book
When retired postmaster Albert Schumer is found dead on the steps of the post office, the whole town of Mystic Notch is disappointed he won’t be able to play in the annual checkers tournament.

But when his ghost informs middle-aged bookstore owner Willa Chance that he died trying to deliver an old letter, which has mysteriously gone missing, Willa realizes Albert didn’t just slip and fall. Someone killed him. Even worse, it turns out the letter contains a list of ingredients for a spell that could wreak havoc on Mystic Notch if it falls into the wrong hands.

The good news is that Pandora and the Mystic Notch cats are on the case. The bad news is that Pandora hasn’t made much progress in getting Willa to receive her subtle communications. She’s going to have to step up her game in that area because the cats are depending on her to secure the help of the humans if they want to stop the killer and protect the letter. Lucky thing Willa’s love interest, Eddie Striker, seems to be more receptive to Pandora’s attempt at communication.

Pandora might have a way to help the humans stop the person with the letter, earn the respect of the other cats, and help Willa and Striker realize they are made for each other. Will it work? Let’s hope so, because the fate of Mystic Notch depends on it.

Thank goodness this one made a bit of progress on one or two of the things about Willa that were beginning to annoy me: the whole, keeping ghosts from Striker and not believing in magic. Alas, the third annoyance - when is Willa going to talk to Pandora - is still there. Maybe it'll improve next book.

I do like the conspiracy of cats, though.

It did bother me that the plot revolved around someone burying a bunch of secret ingredients, and then writing down where she'd put them - that just doesn't seem logical.

The sixth book of the Mystic Notch series.Pandora was deeply concerned because Willa Chance wasn't understanding her messages. And a letter has gone missing and it contained a list of ingredients that Hazel Warren had hidden around Mystic Notch before she was hang. The ingredients were necessary for spell to change the atmosphere of the area to evil. The cats were busy trying to find and protect the letter and needed the help of a human. Will Pandora be successful. There is a cliffhanger at the end. I am looking forward to the next book. I HIGHLY recommend this book and series.

I wanted to read something in between reading my books for review that didn't have any angst, no love triangles, etc. Something that was on the lighthearted side, just fluff and entertainment. This latest installment in the Mystic Notch series fit the bill, with the bonus that the main cat has the same name as my furbaby, Pandora. What's really funny is Pandora doesn't get along with Otis (one of the Mystic Notch cats) and my daughter has a cat named Otis.

4.5 stars for the latest in this cozy mystery series. I realized that I've rated the previous five books but didn't review them because I wasn't on GR at that time. A quick background on the series: this is a cozy mystery series that takes place in a small town in New Hampshire where magic exist but most of the residents don't know that. Willa Chance inherited a lovely Victorian home, a second hand bookstore, and a cat named Pandora when her grandmother died. Before moving back to Mystic Notch Willa had a near-fatal car accident that shattered one of her legs and left her with the unusual side effect of being able to see ghosts of recently deceased residents. They can't pass onto the afterlife until she solves their murder. Her sister Augusta (Gus) is the sheriff of Mystic Notch.

Whisker of a Doubt moves things along several lines. Willa finally starts to believe in magic again (she seemed to as a child), she and Striker are back on and find out they have more in common than just their mutual attraction, and Pandora makes a little headway getting Willa to communicate with her.

The case involves the death of a former postal worker, Albert Schumer, and a missing letter with a list of ingredients that have been hidden around Mystic Notch. Put together these ingredients can be used in a spell that can undo the pleasantry charm that was cast on the quiet town so long ago. It's up to Willa, Striker, Pandora and the other cats to solve Albert's murder and save Mystic Notch.
The murder is solved but something happens so all may not be well in Mystic Notch for long.

I like this mystical cozy mystery series by Leighann Dobbs because the books aren't very long and they have great characters in them. It takes place in a very small town in New Hampshire so there's a cast of eccentric characters they show up in each book. They're clean reads with mild Biblical swears.

Willa is up to her neck with another ghost needing to have his murder investigated. This time Mystic Notch former Post Master Albert Schumer has been killed because he found an extremely old letter that needed to be mailed from many years ago, it was in some of his things from when he was postmaster. The letter contained a list of things hidden around Mystic Notch that could be used to remove a charm around the town, and make things much easier for the evil side to come to power.

Willa discovers there is more in common with Striker that just a passing attraction.

This is another fun story from Leighann Dobbs with well defined characters, and multiple twist to keep you guessing as to who the real killer is. There is also plenty of evidence to let you know there will be more to come from Willa, Pandora, Striker, Gus, and the rest of the Mystic Notch cast and characters.

My favorite talking cat series.

As usual Willa Chance, owner of Last Chance Bookstore in Mystic Notch has gotten herself mixed up in a murder. But this time her cat Pandora and the other cats need to band together to save the town from the evil forces looking to change the town.
This time there is a bit of a twist which may change the future books.
What fun to wait and see.

The death of the former postmaster gives Pandora (Willa's cat) another chance to improve her communication skills with Willa, as well as with Striker...maybe even get them to realize that they can both see ghosts. This is the 6th adventure in the Mystic Notch series and as much fun as the first. I love the cat sections where they interact with each other and try to resolve the issues in the town. If only Willa and Striker could get her sister, Sheriff Gus, on their "paranormal" side and let them actively help with the investigations...but Gus is just not a believer. I can't wait to see what happens next, especially with the extra twist (no spoilers) at the end of this story.

It isn't often that you find a series that each episode within leaves you wanting to read more. This series revolving around a bookseller, Willa Chance, with her bookstore cat, Pandora is just that, a series that I eagerly await the next tale.

Willa had been in a dreadful car accident that left her with a painful leg, and an ability to speak and see ghosts. Willa learned that her Grandmother left her home and business, the bookstore, along with Pandora to her, back in her hometown of Mystic Notch.

The name tells you a lot about this gentle paranormal murder series. Willa has an ability, also Pandora has one too. The story is told from both of their viewpoints.

While Willa searches for the killer of the retired post master, Pandora and friends also are seeking the murderer. There is more than just finding a murderer, there is also the future of the town at stake.

This series is very entertaining. If you are willing to believe in magic and sixth, seven senses, you will find a well written mystery novel and series. I eagerly await volume seven.

This is the 6th book of the series and I have loved every one of them! Once again Ms. Dobbs has combined an intriguing storyline, wonderful settings and believable characters to write a great mystery! This book was gifted to me by the author for purposes of an unbiased review.

I was given an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review

I love this series! Reading about the characters is like catching up with old friends. I always feel like I'm at the bookstore on the couch with them, exchanging gossip. I enjoy that some chapters are from Pandora and some are from Willa, creating anticipation in the hopes they can pull the clues together before it's too late.
This is the type series that makes you want to read each book in one sitting, even though you don't want the book to end!

Whisker of a Doubt is the latest in Leighann Dobbs’ Mystic Notch Cozy Mystery series. It is a fun, fast paced read with lots of suspects and motives to keep you guessing. As usual, the Mystic Notch cats are involved, and Willa and Striker find out that they have more in common than they originally thought. Loved this one and can’t wait for the next!

A fun mystery with a touch of magic, some romance, and a clowder of special cats. Although number 6 in a series you don't history from previous books to thoroughly enjoy this one!

The premise of this one is too similar to many others--witches, smart felines and ghosts--maybe it's a sign that I need to move past cozies?

I absolutely love the Mystic Notch series, but this was my least favorite of the books so far. I enjoyed all of it except for the "reveal". It honestly felt rushed and lackadaisical. I was very disappointed. Still, I enjoyed the book as a whole and it won't stop me from looking forward to the next.

While I do understand that from a series point of view, it makes sense to keep your audience engaged and keep reading, I have a feeling that this has been poorly done for this book. The reason I am saying this is that the overall setting, good vs evil fight is great, BUT! what is wrong with the main character?! Really now. It's book 6 and it seems that she didn't grow up at all. And she's supposed to be a former crime reporter.
She's obnoxious and seems to be quite slow in realising things. Moreover, we don't really get to know much of her day, but she never, for the love of God!, does she have food in her fridge. She's waiting for Striker to bring takeout (why can't she order herself for once?!), she is lazy and rejoices when he is throwing away the food packaging (why can't she do that herself, if she's the host?! at least once!).
I find it difficult to like her especially since she is so stubborn. I still don't understand why she didn't want Striker in her life (considering that in the first book she had the hots for him). What with that "on again, off again" thing? It's been repeated so many times, it gets annoying.

It's true that if the readers pick up the 5th book of the series, one might think of including the details we learnt in the first books, but for the love of God, think of all the readers who read everything! It's tiring to read again and again that she had an accident, that she had inherited the house, the bookshop, the cat, and the ghosts from her grandma who passed away etc. If you pick up the 5th book of a series, you take responsibility that you will not get to know all the details! right?

The book story was okay for a change, but I do think it needs developmental editing, like books 3, 4, and 5. I gave it 4 stars because there are some developments, but I do think that things could be really improved. As a series, we would need big issues to be solved in every book, but up to now we just got crumbs that make up the same puzzle. A shame, really.
The series is light reading, but I would really have liked more shocking twists. Ah, well...

Willa is back again in Mystic Notch with Pandora, her mystical cat and once again they become embroiled in a murder case. a former post master is found murdered on the back steps of the post office. It seems he had discovered an old letter that had never been delivered so he was bringing it to the post office when someone hit him on the back of the head. Willa begins to investigate the various suspects who had conflicts with the murder victim. She sees the ghost of the former post master and tries to hide it from her boyfriend Eddie Striker because she thinks he will think she is nuts. What she doesn't know is that Striker can also see ghosts. Will they ever enlighten each other about their ghostly sights? At the same time that Striker and Willa are investigating, Pandora and all the cats of the notch are doing their own investigation. It seems that the lost letter has a list of ingredients that can end the peace and harmony of the notch if it gets into the wrong hands. Pandora is trying hard to get thru to Willa but so far it is a bust. Will harmony and peace continue in the notch or will the dark side win? Will Willa and Striker find the murderer and will they discover each other's ability to see ghosts? This is a wonderful mystery filled with enchanting characters and mystical cats who make this a treasure to enjoy. Another awesome tale by Leighann Dobbs that is well worth the read. It is an enjoyable and fun experience especially if you like cats and a little magic in your mysteries.

Whisker of a Doubt, Mystic Notch book 6
by Leighann Dobbs

This was a quick and enjoyable read. Willa Chance and Pandora are back, with all their friends and foes, both living and not. A former postmaster has been killed as he tried to deliver a very old letter he found in an old mailbag. Willa and the Mystic Notch cats believe the letter detailed ingredients for a spell that would lift the pleasantry spell that has protected the town for years, and open the door for a harsher and darker form of magic to develop.

The story is well plotted and paced. There are enough suspects to keep everyone guessing as to who was the murderer. There is plenty of action, some real danger to the main characters, and a development in the Willa/Striker relationship. The novel is excellently edited and proofed.

Why didn't I give it 5 stars? 2 reasons. The minor reason is I found the sections of narration attributed to the cat. They seemed to be Pandora's narration, yet, in some sections of those italicized chapters, suddenly it seems to skip to omnipotent POV, and has the narrated refer to "Pandora" rather than "I" or "me." I found it confusing, but not fatal.

The 2nd, and deciding factor was easy -- cliffhanger ending. Nope. In my estimation, it's the sign of an insecure author who feels no one will read the next book unless they need to see the resolution from the one before. I hate them with a passion and the existence of a cliffhanger will almost always cost the book a star.

A Blast from the ?past

So nice to be back in the Mystic Notch world. Pandora, Willa's more than she seems cat still struggles to break through the communication barrier with Willa. Possibly blocking Willa is the fear Striker, her cop boyfriend, would think her crazy about her ghost sighting powers.
When a beloved former postmaster discovers an old letter while cleaning an old mailbag, he determined to deliver it. Alfred is found dead at 6am by the P.O. back door. The letter is missing. But who would kill Alfred over an old letter? His lazy son-in-law, or the antique dealer who had a row with Alfred the day before the annual checkers tournament Alfred always won? What's in the letter that has the secret group of magical cats involved? One of the founding mothers wrkte a list of ingredients for the Pleasancy Charm that makes the townfolk civil & pleasant. But now someone wants to break the charm so the Notch will be shaken up.
Who among the decendents of the ancient family lines sworn to protect Mystic Notch is willing to let chaos descend? And what surprising ally comes to the fore? Can magical cats & the enlightened humans save their beloved town?
All these questions' answers are delivered in a tightly plotted story. There's 5 books more before this story and another after this one. Cheers for the Mystic Notch series.

Terrific book. This series is wonderful! The characters continue to develop. New characters fit into the town and the plots very well. I picked this up and read it in one sitting!

Amazon synopsis:

This story is fun. Willa and Striker are both looking into the death of the retired postmaster, Albert Schumer. Willa because she sees his ghost and will until she finds the murderer. Striker because he is the sheriff of the neighboring county. The death looks like an accident at first but on further investigation is found to be murder.
During the investigation, Willa learns that Striker also can see ghosts. They are both from Mystic Notch and their abilities have been passed down to them from relatives. Willa owns a bookstore she inherited from her grandmother. She also inherited the house and the cat. Pandora is a cat that talks to people with telepathy. Pandora is training Willa to hear her.
Willa has been told to leave the investigation alone by her sister Gus. She is the sheriff of their county. Gus does not want Willa to get involved because she could get hurt or worse.
The story leads us to the killer but not the one everyone suspects.

Another fun one. It kept me guessing, too!

The Gist: One of the retired postmasters found a letter and when he attempted to post it...he was killed and the letter was stolen! Ahh! That letter might very well tip the balance of good and evil, too. A killer AND a letter must be found!

Willa is a fun heroine. She jumps into things without thinking sometimes but she's likable and entertaining. AND over 50! Love that. Striker is a fun hero, too. Has some sexy going on and some sweet, too. It was nice seeing a smidge more of their romance though there's still very little but I do enjoy what's there and the secrets that were revealed this time around.

The mystery was well done, I thought. It kept me guessing who the bad guy was. I enjoyed going along with the ride with both Willa and Striker and Pandora and her fellow kitties who continue to be adorable and feisty.

All in all, a delightful read. I've had a great time with these characters and this enchanted little town.

This is the sixth book in the Mystic Notch series by Leighann Dobbs. It is very well written with a fast pace and characters you grow to love. Willa has been contacted by the ghost of Albert Schumer, a retired postmaster, to find his killer. Albert was killed trying to deliver a letter that was lost in an old mailbag from years ago that contained a letter with the ingredients of a magic potion that could turn Mystic Notch from a friendly place to the "dark side" if it fell into the wrong hands. There are plenty of suspects to go around. Could it be Barney Delaney from the antique store? Nathan Anderson? Felicity Bates?
There were lots of twists and turns in the story but the ending left questions to answered in future books bringing back the same lovable human and feline characters from the previous books.

This is a great book; this is the sixth book in the Mystic Notch series and is written by Leighann Dobbs. Willa Chance runs the bookstore in the town of Mystic Notch and she can also see ghosts. When retired postmaster Albert Schumer is found dead on the steps of the post office and that he died trying to deliver an old letter which has gone missing. Now it is up to Willa and the Mystic Notch cats to find the killer and the letter. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author. This is the sixth in the Mystic Notch series. I enjoy this series. It has strong characters, great story lines and subplots, and good writing. This can be read as a standalone story.

Is there magic, some but nothing terrifying. The story is fast paced and a quick read. Ms Dobbs never disappoints. I am enjoying the developing relationship between Willa and Striker. Maybe next we’ll see Gus and Willa’s relationship soften a little. I can hope.

I enjoyed the antics of the cats, especially Pandora trying to get Willa and Striker’s attention throughout the story.

Waiting for the next installment in the good vs evil of Mystic Notch.
I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy and was not required to post a positive review.

Whisker of a Doubt (Mystic Notch Cozy Mystery #6) [Kindle Unlimited]— Leighann Dobbs (30 chapters) July 17-18, 2019

A very crptic review here. (But if you have read 1-5 already, it should make a lot more sense!)

Finally...FINALLY Striker and Willa get it together and team up to solve a retired postmaster's death.

Pandora the cat is not a perfect cat, but she is learning and growing and coming onto her own.

Willa is almost too confident and still not hitting the signs that Pandora is attempting to give her. Well, she tries! And Willa feels sad when Pandora gives Bing and Pepper total admiring love stares that she never gets from her.

Another twisty plot and the foreshadowing is awesome. I sort of knew how this story was going to end. But FLUFF!

Four stars.

This is the first book I've read in this mystery series where cats communicate with each other and with select people. And some people and cats can interact with ghosts.

Not sure if it says more about me or the book - but I enjoyed the cats' personalities and their interactions more than I enjoyed the human characters. I found that didn't care much "who done it." Maybe it would have been better if I had started with the first book in the series... Will probably give the next book in the series a try.

Great!!

I love this series!! The characters human and feline work very well together. Willa and Striker finally find out the secret they both have been hiding. They both see ghosts.
When a retired postmaster is killed and a letter is missing can they
Figure out who murdered Albert before they go after someone else. The cats also have so serious sleuthing to do.
I look forward to the next book in this series.

Mystic Notch Cozy

I really enjoyed this installment of Mystic Notch. Striker and Willa share a secret. The murder of a retired post master leads Willa and Pandora to search of answers. Pandora and the Mystic Cats take their mission to protect the town very seriously--will their actions be enough?
My only complaint is that it was too long between books...it took me a couple of chapters to re-establish who was who and where was where. The book itself was very enjoyable.
