A fascinating flap book packed with interesting information about how lots of things work. Discover the inner workings of cars and boats, farm and building site machines, everyday household items including vacuum cleaners, computers and fridges, and much more. Each of the seven double page spreads has several flaps to lift, to see inside a subject and understand how it works. Clear, easy to follow text introduces young readers to subjects such as electricity, simple machines and natural forces. Each topic is brought to life by fun, lively illustrations by Stefano Tognetti.
Rob Lloyd Jones was born in San Francisco but grew up in London. He studied Egyptology at University where he learnt hieroglyphics, and often goes on digs with the Egypt Exploration Society. He is a senior editor at Usborne, for whom he has written over thirty books – mostly historical non-fiction, but also adaptations of classics such as JEKYLL AND HYDE and THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. Rob is also a volunteer reading helper at a primary school in Clerkenwell and wrote episodes of the children’s TV show ‘Bernard’s Watch’ for Carlton Kids. He lives in south London with his wife Sally, and 14-month-old son Otis.
Engaging, lots of interest and lots of flaps with extra information or images to engage. I would say that this book would be suitable for older children too as they could read this independently and the language is detailed and doesn’t patronise.
Having said that, the board book element makes it accessible for younger ones and the illustrations are engaging even for little ones (esp if, like Bud, they are vehicle/ engineering minded at the moment)
We would get this out again and I’m sort of sad to see this one go back. We would consider buying this and would recommend to others.
