One day, life was perfect. Then, there was a knock at the door.
One minute I was a mother and wife, the next, I was a widow. Broken doesn't happen over time, it happens in the blink of an eye.
Depression owned me. Heartache consumed me. Reality finally stepped in and made me wake up. I had people depending on me - the only two people left in this world that loved me.
I would start over for my children.

Ranching isn’t for everyone.
At one time, it wasn’t for me either. I’d wanted more from life, but I ended up strung out and unhappy. When family needed me, I returned home.
Being back home gave me a new lease on life, but I had no idea what that meant until I saw her for the first time. I needed her in my life. Hopefully, I'd be able to help this woman become whole.
Barb is a Carolina girl by right and a Texan by birth. By day, she’s a desk jockey for a rural transportation company and a book lover, reading through as many books as she can. At night, though, she turns into her alter ego: a writer—cape optional, depending on her mood.
Her stories are a mix of real-life events, personal experiences, and the craziness of her own imagination and those of her best friends. And when their imaginations blend together, it can be crazy. Barb writes in multiple genres, encounters new adventures, creates new worlds, and has a fantastic time breathing life into new stories, creating something she hopes inspires anyone who reads to fall in love with them as she has.
Barb lives by one little rule: tomorrow is never guaranteed, so make sure you live each day to its fullest.
I knew from the get-go that this was going to be a highly emotional story, and I admit I was a bit nervous about it and how it would affect me. The first thing to hit me hard, besides the book's beautiful dedication, was Jordan's children's names. They shared the names of my grandparents who are both gone and dearly missed. That combination hit me right in the feels unexepectedly. The next part of the book that hit hard was Rhett's father's declining health. My grandfather experienced many of those same situations and it always hurt my heart to see him confused and trapped within the past of his own mind. There was also much beauty to be had in this book as I watched Jordan and Rhett come together. The way Sam and Ana reacted to him was heartwarming and epically sweet. The more I read of Shuler's books, regardless of the genre, the more I seemingly fall in love with how she writes her characters. They are always the kind that crawl under your skin and live in your heart. When things took a turn for the worst, it was truly heartbreaking, but then there was also the mystery of Katrina to contend with. Everything was happening so fast and it made my head spin while my heart was crumbling. There was so much pain as the truths came out, but there was also healing and new beginnings to be had. This book had so many emotional ups and downs. It was truly a beautiful story from start to finish.
What an amazing and truly moving story. Rhett and Jordan are amazing people who have had to face some of the most difficult situations one can face. This story is at times heartwarming and at other heartbreaking. The author has done an amazing job of giving you a story that touches on just about every emotion one can experience. All of the characters (Susie, Gentry, Rhett, Jordan, Kassidy, Sam, Ana, Arty, Tim and a few others) are all phenomenal. They are lovable, relatable, and at times certifiable. I’m truly touched by this story. I will warn you that chocolate Nd tissues is a must when you read this one. I recommend this book to anyone who love a good story about survival, love, and second chances. 5* to the author, Barbara Shuler!
Wow. This book is an emotional read from the very beginning to the very end. I bawled my eyes out, I laughed hard along with the characters and I smiled with pure happiness while turning pages. A sign that the writer is truly gifted. Such an fantastic book, Jordan and Rhett are perfectly matched and those kids will melt your heart. Definitely worth a read. And I can't wait to find out what else comes from McKenna Ranch.
This book hits all the feels. Rarely do I give five stars, but this book warrants the rating.
Jordan and Rhett from the moment they meet spark are flying, with misunderstandings, hesitations, grief, acceptaces, crushes, friendship building, and ending of toxic relationships - this book has it all. It is a slow burn with engaging coversation and thought-provoking interactions.
I am new to this author, but she has definitely been added to my tbr list.
This is a wonderful book. It starts with Jordan learning of her husband's tragic death. His death leaves her on her own with a three and one year old to raise by herself. After she decides to start her life over again in a new state she doesn't believe she can find love again. After applying for a new job as a cook and housekeeper she has found her perfect man.
This is a spirited and truly touching story of love, loss and second chances. We all face struggles in life at one time or another. You either overcome and prosper, or let them take you down.
Jordan has faced loss and tragedy in the worst way, yet she pushes on, for the sake of her two young children. They're her heart and soul and she'd give anything to give them a happy and secure life.
Rhett has a troubled past, which includes issues with his family, that lead him astray. He's now back on the family farm, when Jordan comes waltzing into his life, stirring up feelings he hadn't imagined he would have.
Jordan and her children bring a new wave of light to Rhett and his family. She's somehow brought them closer than ever before, and it's just what they all needed.
Jordan finds Rhett attractive and alluring, yet her heart is conflicted. Her past memories and feelings sneak up on her and she has to decide if being happy is worth the risk. Beautifully heart felt story, showing you courage and strength is in all of us.
Jordan and Rhett are both people who have had their lives hit rock bottom , one with the death of a spouse , the other with drugs .
Jordan is now a single mother and after she let depression drag her down her children helped her rise back up maybe she isn't as broken as she thought.
Rhett let life drag him down but when his family needed him he kicks it in the butt and returns home and then he sees her and realizes maybe just maybe he is supposed to be right where he is
This story had so emotion, love and heart that you can't help but fall in love with these people
