A Dark & Stormy Night, written by Jody Duncan Shannon, detailing the making of BATMAN (1989). Backyard Odyssey, written by Susan Dayton, about the production of HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS
From February 1990, this covers just two films but does so with considerable depth. The first article, by Jody Duncan Shannon, is about “Batman” and takes in not only the knotty development phase, but the production from start to finish, with most of the length taken up with the filming. Costume and production design, make-up and miniatures are all well covered and the writing is clear and crisp. The photographs are well chosen too. The second article is on “Honey, I Shrunk The Kids”, a film I haven’t revisited since the first watch, with an in-depth look at how the production coped with working in Mexico. The talent involved in this - a lot of them from ILM - means that the effects were well designed and produced and that’s clearly shown here. Two absolute winners, in terms of writing, covering 30+ year old films that are still about today and not a computer in sight! Well worth a read, I’d very much recommend this.
