Don Shay is the author of the new award winning coffee-table book "Endangered Liaisons," on African wildlife and the safari experience. He is also the founder/publisher of "Cinefex," a quarterly magazine on movie special effects, and has written extensively on motion picture technology for that publication and others. His book, "The Making of Jurassic Park," topped the New York Times best-seller list for several weeks in 1993. He lives in Riverside, California. "
From November 1985 (which thankfully means it’s free of technicians sitting around computer monitors and pointing at things), this features three films from a great period of movie releases, two of which I’ve seen and rate very highly. “Cocoon”, by Shay, covers the full production of Ron Howard’s film (which I haven’t ever seen, for reasons I can’t fathom) and is well written and put together (and includes the fact Bob Zemeckis was in the running to direct). The next two films are rounded up as “Backyard Adventures - Spielberg Style”, by Pourroy and cover “The Goonies” and “Back To The Future”, obviously before they went through the roof. “The Goonies” is the more interesting part of the article (it has more effects work) but both are thoroughly interesting and informative. A great edition of the now much-missed magazine, paying attention to film-making processes that are all but gone now, this is a brilliant read and I’d highly recommend it.
