Rate this book

The past just won't stay dead for Nathan Stone.

When the Larsson Studio and its owner suffer a series of attacks, Nathan Stone must not only figure out who is responsible, he must try to lay to rest the rumours that have led to them. Rumours that have been encouraged by the local paper.

Just as he is putting that case to bed a body is discovered in a burned out car in Branton Wood, a car that is connected to Kurt Walker, the man who murdered his family.

Nathan must decide whether he is the right man to investigate, and figure out how a man who has been dead for nine months can be connected to a body that is only days old. Is it a coincidence, or is there something more going on?

After working in the clerical, warehouse and retail industries over the years, without gaining much satisfaction, Alex quit to follow his dream and become a full-time writer.
His non-writing dream is to one day earn enough to travel, with a return to Egypt to visit the parts he missed before, and Macchu Picchu, top of his wishlist of destinations.
When not writing, he is either playing a game or being distracted by Molly the Yorkie, who is greedy for both attention and whatever food is to be found.

Alex R. Carver brings back our favorite detective, Nathan Stone returns for the fourth installment of his Inspector Stone series. Stone and company are juggling their usual frenetic workload and things are happening in their small part of England. Cases from the other series spill into this story making for a rich stew of police drama. Stone is still battling his own personal demons and there is an interesting new woman, reporter Louise Orchard to add to his many distractions. New cases, new problems, and gritty police work make for a great read in this solid series.

The fourth installment of the Inspector Stone series shows our stalwart detective doing what he does best: following clues and arresting the bad guys. This time, however, Nate has so many kettles on the stove I’ve no idea how he manages to keep everything straight! Out of the frying pan... (wink wink)

Truly, one of the most enjoyable facets of the Inspector Stone series is watching Nate and his fellow officers as they slog through the minutiae, weaving the strings of their case (or, as in this book, cases) into a full tapestry. Nate is still struggling with depression after losing his wife & kids, not to mention some possible guilt about his friendship (is that all it is?) with reporter Louisa Orchard. Managing all that while still overseeing his unit and a series of baffling cases is an act of Herculean effort and something most can relate to; if not those exact circumstances then at least the feeling engendered by them. And that’s what keeps bringing me back to Inspector Stone. Alex Carver has given us an every man, imperfect but trying his best, and damn if you don’t want to root for that!

Doh! Confession: it wasn't until I got to the end that I realised I'd clicked on the wrong book in my Kindle Library! 🙈 This is, in fact book 4 of the series.
That I didn't realise is testament to the fact that this book can be read as a stand alone.

I really enjoyed this book.
There's a whole pile of cases for Detective Stone to wade through, and he's recovering from trauma as it is.

There's a fun array of characters, all written with depth.
Details of the cases are classified until you read them 😉

Like all good detectives, Stone is a guy with flaws. This is what makes him so believable.
I love his friendships and how we get glimpses into his life as he gets on with his work.
There's even a nosy reporter/friend.

If you like detective books, you'll want to give this series a read.

A solid addition to the series finds Stone in the middle of quite a few cases that don’t seem to have so much in common. But there seems to be a thread that links them all together. Stone and his minions soon find they are and set things in motion to make the arrest that will cover all the crimes and have the evidence to link them all on one group of thieves working together.
