The Queen's Rising #2

The Queen's Resistance

Rate this book
At long last, Brienna is a mistress of knowledge and is settling into her role as the daughter of Davin MacQuinn, the disgraced lord who returned to Maevana to reclaim his House. Though she’s just survived a revolution that will finally put a queen on the throne, she faces yet another challenge: acceptance by the MacQuinns. But as Queen Isolde Kavanagh’s closest confidant, she’ll have to balance serving her father’s House with serving her country. And then there’s Cartier.

Aodhan Morgane, formerly known as Cartier Évariste, is adjusting to the stark contrast between his pre-rebellion life in Valenia and his current one as lord of a fallen House. During his castle’s restoration, he discovers Tomas, a young boy whose past is a mystery. So when Brienna is as taken with Tomas as he is, Cartier lets his mind wander—what if he doesn’t have to raise him or his House alone?

However, Brienna and Cartier must put their love aside and stay focused on the most vital tasks at hand—the Lannons' trial, forging alliances, executing justice, and ensuring that no one halts the queen’s coronation. But resistance is rumbling among the old regime’s supporters, who are desperate to find a weakness in the rebels’ forces. And what makes one more vulnerable than love?

In this epic follow-up to The Queen's Rising, Rebecca Ross weaves political intrigue, complicated relationships, and undying love to create a story that readers won't be able to put down.

It wasn't a badly written book at all but I was bored throughout. From page 1 until the last page, I hardly enjoyed myself. I did appreciate some plot twists and the chemistry between the two main characters but other than that I did not care at all about what was happening and the political intrigue.

I had also thought this one would have a bit more of the romance compared to book 1, but it was lesser. I skimmed towards the end.

More of that romance please 😩 Need some swoon worthy moments from Cartier

“I will be standing at the front, and if you feel afraid, I want you to look at me, and know that you are not alone.”

At first I debated the necessity of writing a review for this book instead of simply writing that these books were going on my favorites list. Both these books are on my favorites list because of each other. Not that they aren't good enough individually but that they complemented each other so well. The first book introduced us to the world, as is the virtue of all first books, and started with a light-hearted story about a girl and her dreams to become a passion. Then the story twisted into a more complicated plot of restoring the rightful queen to the throne and displacing the cruel king.

This book moves on to have a more complicated plot in terms of what must he achieved once the queen has been placed on the throne and to securing her position. Emotionally, this book is a roller coaster compared to the last one. Since the first book introduced us to the characters and have given us the start of their relationships, this one takes off with the bond between the characters being much stronger and with more meaning.
A book like The Queen’s Rising could have been left as a standalone, given the ending, it would have left doubts on the fate of the traitors and their houses, but it wouldn’t have been too big of a crime to stop there. A sequel to such a book has the potential to disappoint but this book was anything but a disappointment. In fact I think it only gets better.

The difficulties with securing Isolde’s position are accompanied by the difficulties of Brienna finding her place in the MacQuinn court with citizens who view her as an Allenach and Aodhan rebuilding the Morgane court which has turned to ruins.
Tensions run high as the supporters of the Lannon rule are yet to be fully unearthed and no one knows if their court is fully secure.
Isolde starts her rule by allowing the citizens to decide the fate of the prisoners by trial.
Aodhan, formerly known as Cartier, also has a perspective in this book which allows us a broader view of the world when the characters are in different places, giving us different opinions on the same situation.

In the first book, the Maevan houses were named and we saw a few members but in this book we get to watch first hand the functioning of the court, the citizens, and the stories of the lords and ladies of Maevana during the war and after it.
There is definitely more depth to this book than the last one because the need to introduce the readers all the new aspects of the world is minimized. We dive head first into the new plot which reminds us that running a country after a revolution might be harder than the revolution itself.

The characters are put in more demanding situations both mentally and physically. They will have to make choices that will test loyalties between houses. The book itself feels more severe than the first one and the therefore the we see a side of the characters we may not have seen or had to have understood before the events that unfurl in this book. Since we now have Cartier’s perspective we see a lot more about his past, his family, the struggles faced by the Morgane house, and we also see the burden he carries on his shoulders to make the best decisions for his house and the people he cares about.

In both books I loved the portrayal of the traditional relationship of Maevan men and women, being that the women were capable fighters to protect themselves, the mutual respect between men and women, how the men accepted the matriarchy, and the simple ideology that any Maevan will kill if it means it will protect their family from a threat.

If you read the first book and liked it don't hesitate to read this one, it only gets better.

ARC provided by the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

1.) The Queen's Rising ★★★★

“Crowning Isolde Kavanagh as the rightful queen was not the end of our rising. It was merely the beginning.”

The Queen’s Resistance is book two in Rebecca Ross’s debut series, which I think is so underhyped and so underappreciated! Seriously, friends, stop sleeping on this series. Because this is exactly the kind of YA fantasy that I’m always on the hunt for; amazing friendships, swoon-worthy romances, medieval setting, unique magic systems, and women coming into their power and embracing what has been taken from them by men who fear that power.

The Queen's Rising focused on our main character, Brienna, at a school that helps young girls hone sought after specializations. And after graduating in one of these sought-after trades (art, music, dramatics, wit, and knowledge) you will work under a patron doing a vast array of different things with your skill set. But Brienna was sent to this boarding school so that she could go into hiding, because the blood that runs through her veins has made her quite the threat to the throne, and the world.

I honestly feel like I can’t say too much about The Queen’s Resistance, because it picks up very soon after the end events of The Queen's Rising, and a lot of things went down. But I will say that Brienna is still very sought-after, but now she has a very strong found family that helps protect her, regardless of what her last name is. And even though the revolution is over, the rebuilding has just begun, and Brienna, and her family want to build something worthy of a legacy.

“If you were a storm, I would lie down and rest in your rain. If you were a river, I would drink from your currents. If you were a poem, I would never cease to read you.”

Cartier also gets his own point of view in this book, and his journey is also not an easy one because of his bloodline. But regardless of the bad things that have happened in his past, he always shows empathy and consideration in every situation. Seeing him and Brienna grow, and grow together, is so beautiful, and their strength and compassion really knows no bounds.

Found family is for sure the shining light of this beautiful tale, but this is also a book about becoming the person you want to be, regardless of the evil acts people have committed with the same last name as you. And this is a story about rising up, and being what you dream of being, not who people expect you to be on account of a last name that you never asked to have.

“Is it only blood that makes a House? Or is it beliefs? What holds people together more? The red in their veins or the fire in their hearts?”

Overall, I can’t wait to see what comes next in this world. I just fell so in love with these characters, and I want to protect them at all costs. Rebecca Ross’s writing is so lyrical and beautiful, and I really have become so attached to this entire world she has created. Again, this series is so underhyped, and this author has really blown me and my expectations away with this debut series.

I love the writing, I love the plot.
But I cannot in good conscience give this more than three stars because of the romance.

I knew this going in, after reading book 1 I knew the romance would continue. But I loved the story being told and the world building enough to carry on despite it. Which says a massive amount for this authors writing, because with anything else glamourising a teacher/student romance I’d chuck it immediately.

Not much more to say, the ending tied everything up well. One point I didn’t think about myself but I saw in another review and immediately agreed with - was that the main character Brienna has absolutely no flaws. She is loved by everyone and it doesn’t make for enjoyable or believable characterization.

I know this sounds relatively negative but honestly this authors writing is so good I will be trying other books by her.

The Queen’s Rtesistance
Book 2 of The Queen’s Rising series. Fantasy. Must read the prior book first.
Now that the rebellion has the king off the throne, the different houses need to realign and rebuild. Restitution and forgiveness will hopefully allow forward momentum.

Aftermath. This book is what happens after the successful change in power where politics must play a role. And everyone must decided how to feel and what to do next. At least those at the top of the power pyramid.
Some suspense which I won’t spoil.

Reading this made me feel like a fairytale princess.

Specifically, Shrek’s Princess Fiona right after she knocks Robin Hood unconscious for being annoying.

This book is a great example of why character flaws are vital and why Mary Sues should be put to death by any self-respecting editor. Rebecca Ross isn’t a bad writer. She proves this in the Cartier POV chapters. Unfortunately, she then contradicts this assertion any time we switch to Brienna Mary Sue’s POV. There’s not much to work with when YOUR MC IS JUST SO PERFECT AND EVERYONE LOVES HER AND SHE CAN LITERALLY DO NO WRONG.

NOT THAT I TOOK THIS WASTE OF TIME PERSONALLY OR ANYTHING.

Video Review

The Queen's Resistance was an amazing sequel to a first book that I already loved. This second book only solidified my love for this series.
This is also a hugely underrated series that much more people need to pick up.

“I love the spirit you are forged from. If you were a storm, I would lie down and rest in your rain. If you were a river, I would drink from your currents. If you were a poem, I would never cease to read you.”

I feel like I'm not even gonna have that much to say about The Queen's Resistance. It picked up directly after the end of The Queen's Rising and I felt like it really followed the themes of the first book. So everything I said in my review for that definitely still stands for this sequel as well.
I do think that you could tell that, after her amazing debut, Rebecca Ross improved her writing even more. I loved how she referenced the events of the first book and it was surprisingly easy to get back into the story, thanks to her giving us small recaps throughout the first couple of chapters. It was very cleverly done.

One of my favourite things about this story is still just how simplistic it is. There's no big focus on any drama or tropes, Rebecca Ross doesn't need to rely on any of that to keep you engaged. And while I love some good angst and tropes, it is so refreshing to read a book where it really seems like there is no need for that.
And it's so interesting because at the same time, this book is full of surprising twists and shocking revelations. Somehow Rebecca Ross really managed to pull that off.

I also really love the world and all of the politics within it. I can't wait to explore this even more in the sequel and I really hope that even after this trilogy, we will return to this world cause I think it has so much potential!

“Is it only blood that makes a House? Or is it beliefs? What holds people together more? The red in their veins or the fire in their hearts?”

But the best thing about this series is all of the characters and their relationships. The found family theme still runs strong throughout this book and it is so beautiful. There were so many moments related to family that really made me tear up.
As someone who truly loves romance, I almost think that there's not enough in this book. I really love the relationship between Brienna and Cartier and so I wish that we had seen more of them together in romantic moments. At the same time, everything we did get was wonderful and beautiful and I know that a lot of people will be very satisfied with the way the romance is handled.

What really makes this novel stand out in comparison to the first book, is some of the darker themes and topics that were included. I don't really wanna go into any detail but it really felt like Rebecca Ross was ready to go a big step further than she did in The Queen's Rising and I think it worked incredibly well and was handled with care. That said, it does deal with some really hard and heavy topics. Content and trigger warnings for torture, (child) abuse, violence, slavery and sex trafficking.

“She gave me her breath as I gave her mine, until my heart was beating in her hands, until I felt like she had swallowed all of my secrets.”

Overall, The Queen's Resistance is an amazing sequel, that builds on the basis that the first book has provided, while adding some really interesting new themes. This book has me incredibly excited for what's to come in this series, this world and more by Rebecca Ross.

The plot of this book had an odd focus in my opinion, but I did enjoy that this was all about the next step immediately after a rebellion has won back the throne. This series is exploring the "true heir" trope in a unique way. I enjoy the world, the characters, and the writing. I love the focus on adoptive families.

Audiobook review: The female narrator was good with voices but average with reading. The male narrator was poor with female voices but otherwise pretty good. Enjoyable enough in this format to recommend.

No qualms about it, this is such an enjoyable and fulfilling fantasy duology. It’s one of my favorites and I love the path it takes its readers down.

The Queen’s Resistance picks up shortly after the first book, and the people of Maevana are figuring out how to piece their country back together after returning the rightful queen to her throne.

Although I missed some of the swoony romance aspects of the first book, when Brienna and Cartier are in the initial stages of their relationship, I appreciated even more the team they are in this one and the earnestness between them.

This sequel definitely brings in more of the politics of the aftermath of a revolution and I greatly enjoyed the intrigue in weeding out dissenters and learning more about the houses of Maevana and their people. There are quite a few intriguing twists and the action kept the story moving forward with a consistent pace. Furthermore, it continues to build upon the theme of forging a family of your own making, not necessarily one based on blood. I found this message to be one of the most powerful aspects of the story.

Really love this one though. It’s a solid and easy to love fantasy with all of the expected and well loved elements of the genre, with some intriguing qualities that make it a little different as well. Highly recommend!

a strong and satisfying conclusion to the duology, offering improved pacing, heightened tension and deeper character development compared to the first book.

while the first book had a slower pace and at times felt lacking in emotional depth, this one delivers on the promise of the series with a more engaging plot and stronger stakes.
Brienne's growth, both personally and in her relationships, is particularly compelling and the romance, which felt underdeveloped in the first book, is much more rewarding here.

I believe that it elevates the story by providing a faster-moving, emotionally charged narrative with satisfying resolutions.
it’s a significant step up from the first book by giving the characters and plot more depth, making this final book a much more fulfilling experience.

people who enjoyed the first book will definitely find this conclusion to be well worth the read!

OH MY GODNESS.. MY HEART
I´M SHOCKEEED!!!

It's hard for me to believe that this duology was Rebecca Ross's debut. I've enjoyed ever book of her's, but to know that her writing has been this damn strong from the get go ... I can't help but admire her as a writer even more.

As Ross herself has stated, this sequel didn't need to exist. The Queen's Rising could have stood as a standalone, but I am so glad Ross decided to continue writing in this world. This novel expands on the characters and world of book one so well. While I enjoyed book one, I simply couldn't put book two down.

When I think of this series, some phrases come to mind: enchanting, rich, darkly whimsical, consuming, transportive, romantic, underrated, one of a kind ... I can't recommend this series highly enough.

"The light always overcomes the darkness."

What a wonderful duology to start the year off with. I enjoyed the first one, but wow did this story hit it out of the park. I'm such a fan of the aftermath of war and watching people work out how they're going to be better than what they had before. It's such a hopeful idea, and one I find never misses. I've always loved a good happy ending, but more so, I love watching the reason for fighting so hard in the first place.

This book starts right where The Queen's Rising ends. The war is won, but are the people? It follows Brienna and her conviction for is right, and Aodhan and his step into a role he never believed he'd get to hold. They're figuring out their new lives, their new responsibilities while also falling completely in love with each other. There are endless meetings, endless fears, and different forms of happy endings coming at them. It's the ones they grasp they must work through, and they must be able to do it together and apart. Their love story is beautiful, and I found myself completely taken in by the honesty and respect they showed for each other with every page I turned.

Beyond that, I loved how each ending came with its own story, its own reason. I love how everything tied together in the end. I love that "Sometimes you have to be thrown into things or else you'll never do them" and more, I loved that "She humbled me, she humbled all of us." Because both of those quotes come at such large turning points, and both made me tear up.

Rebecca Ross has definitely become an author to watch for me. I wouldn't quite call her a favorite (yet), but she's absolutely on her way to being one. I can't wait to pick up another!

I loved this book and this series, but if I’m being honest, I wish that it had been longer. It could’ve been easily a 5/6 book series. There was so much world building and magic and politics built into it that it seems a shame that it were only used in two instalments. ...or maybe I’m just sad that it’s over.

I loved Brienna and Cartier and Ewan and Keela and and and ...I just love found families in books. This was such a sweet, wholesome and addicting series. Yet again, I’m sitting here, waiting for Rebecca Ross’ next venture. Ahhh!

Well, I loved the first book, but I dont know if I feel' The Queens Resistence' was a necessary sequel. This book read more like a Novella. I like that we got to see the ending of certain characters storylines. But, I just feel like this book could have been merged in the Queens Rising and it could have been a great standalone. I like the characters and the setting. Overall the world building is solid and it's an enjoyable read. I just feel like this book could have been combined with the first. The plot felt strung together at the last second. Despite all this, Cartier forever 💗😂

This is a solid sequel.

Here are some of my thoughts:
• The strong family and friendship themes are what makes this book worth reading. I like how it’s not just about the romance or about the political plot. Ross has done well in establishing the strength of each relationship. It makes me feel so much when I see characters be happy or sad for one another. I love how much Luc and Jourdain have become her family now – they are such lovable characters. Also, I appreciate seeing Brienna forming a strong friendship with the queen.
• Cartier gets his own narration in this one and I enjoy it. His romance with Brienna is sweet and romantic.
• Brienna is frustrating at times with her secrecy (about her not being accepted as a MacQuinn and with the retaliation). I feel like it would’ve been smarter to voice her concerns, but I can understand why she’d be embarrassed to say them.
• Brienna definitely goes through a lotttt in this book – way more than the previous. I appreciate that she has gotten stronger.

3 stars. I like the 1st book better but this is a solid sequel and I have learned to really like certain characters. I’m honestly not sure where the next book will go. book focuses a lot on the vengeance and healing to gain closure from the dark era. I guess it’ll be nice to see a book of that rebuilding and moving forward.

Damn this was a great book! Even better than the first one and I loved the first book.

We get all of our favorite characters back with even more amazingness. I mean the crazy reveals one after the other just blew me away! The romance at the end made me want to cry with tears of joy. There are moments that totally broke my heart in this book but there was light to wash away the darkness.

Brienna is a wonderful character. We also get Cartier’s perspective which was very much needed. I love these two separately and together. It was quite a journey for them both. Brienna trying to fit in and find her place among her new family. Then Cartier’s inner struggles between right and wrong. The overall theme of deciding between vengeance and mercy was a struggle for all of the characters but I think they made the right decisions in the end.

I will always love the bonds in these books. Parent to child. Sibling to sibling. BFF to BFF (because some things never change). Friend to lover. All so wonderful and heartfelt.

Basically just read these books. You don’t want to miss out.

“Is it only blood that makes a House? Or is it beliefs? What holds people together more?”

This continues to be a wonderful fantasy series with The Queen’s Resistance being a strong political fantasy ab0ut rebellions, family, and legacy. Picking up right where The Queen’s Rising left off, Brienna and Cartier try to navigate Maevana politics and heal from old wound as the country is fundamentally changed.

Things I Liked
This book had all the politics and power plays and I was so here for it. I love political fantasy books because they just add so much to the world. Seeing how the different alliances and rivalries influence the characters andee drive their actions was so cool.

I feel like the story introduced some great strong new characters. Especially Neeve and Ewa, both of which had plenty of screen time that never took away from the main characters.

There was such a natural progression to the story - reveals made sense and moved plot forward and nothing felt rushed. It made the story super easy to read and fall into.

There was so much action and fighting in the story. It was well placed and plotted, keeping me engaged and hooked.

Things I Didn’t Like
First chapter felt really long so it was a bit hard for me to get into the story and back into the world. But it picked up after chapter 1, and there was enough of a recap without feeling too much to help familiarize myself with the story.

My least favorite part of the story was probably the ending. It just felt a little rushed and unsatisfying. It was a nice conclusion and I got most of the answers I wanted, but 50 more pages wouldn’t have hurt my feelings.

This truly is an underrated fantasy series that offers so much worldbuilding and shining character moments that it’s impossible to not fall in love. The Queen’s Resistance is a unique story filled with loveable romances and intricate worldbuilding that crafts a surprising story that sticks with you.

This was my most anticipated release of 2019! After flying through the first novel I had to see what happened next I was ADDICTED to Rebecca’s writing style! And surprise, surprise... I love her writing in this too! It is just as mesmerising and enchanting as the first novels style and I flew through this one as wel. The first novel could of been left as a stand-alone, but if you liked The Queens Rising please do NOT hesitate to pick up The Queens Resistance the plot only gets better!

All included quotes have been taken from an ARC and may not match the finished publication.
I saw the fire stirring within her, ancient fire as if she were a dragon that had just been woken. A dragon that was about to rise, blot out the half-moon with her wings, and rain terror.

Before I get into this review too far, I just want to say that this is a series that needs more recognition! Seriously! Not only does it embody a lot of the desired qualities in typical Young Adult fiction, it adds quality, meaning, originality, and so much more! I had received an ARC of The Queen’s Rising last year, and just immediately fell in love with the story and characters. The Queen’s Resistance only adds to the series, and deepens my love of it.

If there was a single word that described this book, it would be meticulous. I know that politics may steer some readers away, but hear me out! The way this story is built, it must include political maneuvering, or else it will make no sense. It’s literally the entire point of the book--dethroned queen takes back her throne--it’s all about the politics!

I love the way the author captures the intricacies of how politics play such a deeply influential, and very powerful role in societies. While this subject is certainly introduced in the first book, it manifests greatly and becomes much more twisted, dark, and central here. This series is a great example as to how nothing is cut and dry in politics, especially when certain folks only care about their own gain rather than for the good of the majority.

Within relating and relying heavily upon politics, lies a strong sense of community. The community between characters, houses, and countries are both at times, heart-warming and gut wrenching. Ross does an amazing job at building just enough complexity into how the houses and individuals intertwin to make tangible, constant tension. It is within the walls of these alliances that strong bonds and stronger divisions breed.
”What had I thought? That Jourdain’s people would like mat once? That I would fit into the weavings of a place that had suffered while I had flourished on the other side of the channel? As I stepped into the castle courtyard, I began to wonder if it would be better for me to return to Valenia. I began to believe that perhaps I truly didn’t belong here.”

The point-of-view splits between Cartier and Brienna. Both deal with their own issues among their new and refound families. Brienna deals with feeling accepted into her new family. So does Cartier, in a way, as he struggles to rebuild the House of Morghane. Along with other characters, everyone has a specific and influential role within the plot.

Despite how much I enjoyed this book, I also had a few issues with it. One thing that I really would like to have seen more of was the magic. While I honestly love that this book has more of a historical fiction feel, I feel that there has been a missed opportunity with not showing more of the magical element, or at least a steady growth in its arc. There is scarcely any use of it, and only some mentions of it here and there.

The second issue lies with Cartier’s character. I truly like him most. However, I feel that his character lacks. I want more from him, instead of him being more of background noise. I get that this book is supposed to be about the strong female lead, and strong female characters in general. However, you can’t show strength without opposition AND support from both women AND men. I think strong female characters are great, but I also want equally as strong male characters. Unfortunately, I feel like Cartier is just dull in comparison, and it’s a true shame.

Even so, I really liked this book. It was a great addition to the series, and can’t wait to see where it leads!

Vulgarity: None.
Sexual content: Kissing only.
Violence: Moderate.

My Rating: ★★★★1/2

2'5/5
