I have always loved inspirational quotes. I have many, many notebooks filled with quotes I have discovered over the years. There is just something satisfying about reading a quote that captures a topic or emotion perfectly.
A powerful quote can lift your spirits and turn a bad day into a day filled with promise. A quote from someone you look up to can provide inspiration to either follow that person's path, or to forge an entirely new one.
The quotes contained in this astonishing book are all from females. I am not 100% sure, but I believe it is the only all-female quote collection available today. In researching quotes in general, the editors of this book discovered that "... less than ten percent of the quotations shared every day are from women and girls." This number is too low and this book seeks to remedy that appalling lack.
quoteur /kwō tǝr’ / noun a person who originates a pithy collection of words worth sharing.
GRIT & GRACE not only inspires it's readers, but as it states in the subtitle, the quotes are; "...Designed to make you think."
The layout of this book is wonderful. Each time you open the book to a two-page layout. The quote is printed in bold and has a page to itself. On the left side page is the name of the quoteur along with a brief description of who she is and a short biography which highlights her life and achievements. I received as much inspiration from reading about these amazing women as I did from reading the quotes. I also discovered many new role models, women who I am ashamed to admit that I had never heard of before now. Who knows? Readers may find their perfect role model just through the reading of this book.
So many of the quotations in this collection spoke to me that I had an extremely difficult time deciding which ones were my favorites. Instead, I realized that each and every quote spoke to me at different times and meant different things. I have decided to only include four quotes in this review, but I highly recommend purchasing GRIT & GRACE since it is a book that can (and should be) read over and over again.
Here are just a few of the included inspirations:
"Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood." - Marie Curie (Scientist) 1867-1934
"To love what you do and feel that it matters - how could anything be more fun?" - Katherine Graham (Publisher and winner of the Pulitzer Prize)
"If you don't fall down, you aren't trying hard enough." -Tenley Albright (1935-____) (Surgeon, Cancer Researcher, Polio Survivor & First US woman to win a Gold Medal in Figure Skating)
"One of the more powerful outbreaks of happiness and meaning in your life will occur when you pair your passion and the world's need." - Sue Monk Kidd (Novelist)
I rate this book as 5 out of 5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and I think it would make a terrific Christmas present, especially for those young people who are just learning to find their voices. I read Grit and Grace in 1 day. I couldn't put it down. At first I thought that it was going to contain inspirational quotes to help motivate me, which I was looking forward to, but it had the added bonus of including biographical information about the particular leader to whom each quote is attributed.
The book itself is attractive, with each page designed and coloured in eye-catching detail that makes you feel comforted and calm. This book reminds me of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series, but with a bit more edge for those who want inspiration for the 21st century. I recommend keeping a copy of this book by your bedside table or on a desk at work, for those moments when you want to escape or just need a pick-me-up (or a kick in the pants, as it may be).
Grit and Grace is well organized, with a Table of Contents that allows you to find a quote for the exact mood that you are in. My favourite contributors in the book are in the "Overcome and Become" section; Tarana Burke, for example, was both relatable and empowering: "Healing is a lifelong journey and the hardest part is starting." 5 stars!
I love what this book does; acknowledges that women have been getting largely ignored in the quotation books, and addresses that. I find quote books to be inspirational and motivational, and having one that focuses on women is long overdue.
Grit & Grace gives brief excerpts of over 94 notable women, famous or not, along with a quote from them. These women collectively show the courage, the heart, the strength, the love, the wide varieties of abilities, and yes, the grace and the grit that make up a woman.
This book is a wonderful model for our children and young women that what you can dream, you can accomplish if you work hard and don't count yourself out. If they need an example, they only have to open this book to any page. It would make a perfect gift!
Many thanks to NetGalley and to Quarto Rock Point for allowing me to read and review an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Each page is beautifully designed, thoughtfully written and packed with stories of women – inspiring women! The quotes and stories in this book come from journeys of all different paths but they all have something that ties them together – WOMEN! It’s as though you are walking alongside and listening to the story of each individual. Each with unique circumstances, genres and reasons why. It is a collection of young and old, new and seasoned, famous and not-so-famous all in one beautiful book. This book will challenge you to think, engage your emotions and spark your imagination. To see the stories of so many women in a wonderfully curated compilation of bound pages is remarkable. We all need inspiration and wisdom throughout our journey and you will find it throughout this book. It is an excellent gift for friends, daughters and yourself.
*Thank you to NetGalley & Quarto Publishing Group for my e-copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.*
Grit & Grace is an Instagram worthy book of quotes from interesting women, and their stories. I enjoyed reading quotes from women in the public eye but the stories of women that I had never heard of were even better.
I received an ebook version of this book which makes it easy to shared the quotes on social media, but I think it would work better as a coffee table book- the design is beautiful. I would buy this as a gift for teenage girls in particular, to remind them what remarkable things women can achieve.
Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for this free copy in exchange for an honest review. #GritGrace
'Grit & Grace' is a book of quotes by women. Simple. 85% of quotations shared daily are by men. Alicia Williamson and Pauline Weger have done the research and have created a brilliant and stylish book filled with 90 remarkable women and girls and the clever/inspiring/brave things that they have said. I have already screen shot and instagrammed “Don’t shoot for the stars, we already know what’s there. Shoot for the space in between because that’s where the real mystery lies” Vera Rubin, Astronomer
Grit & Grace is an incredible concept & design for a book. The foreword does a great job of explaining the authors' vision of familiarizing people with outstanding women from all walks of life as well as their inspiring quotes! In the current era of feminism and revolution, this makes for an amazing read which is not motivated by political bias, rather is a wonderful statement of women uplifting women and educating the masses regarding the contributions of female game-changers in the fields of science, arts, culture and so much more!
Care. Love. Be outraged. Be devastated. Just don’t give up. The world needs good humans today - Ellen Degeneres. That quote says it all. This book is full of inspirational women and quotes for all ages. This is a book for young woman to show them that they can be anything they want to be. There are stories from people you know and some who you may not have heard of but every story is inspiring and this book would make a lovely gift for the young girls in your family.
This is a wonderful book, especially for women and young girls, on inspiring women current and throughout history. The book has a one page summary on a woman and then follows with a quote on another page. They have chapters such as: Purpose, Imagine, Innovation, Courage, Conviction, Speak Up, Get It Done.......and they feature women such as Marie Curie, Ellen DeGeneres, Jane Goodall, Tina Fey, Beatrix Potter, Maya Rudolph,...... “Find astonishing people and hang out with them.” Megan Smith
I got so much enjoyment out of reading this book from Quotabelle! While filled with many inspirational quotes to keep up with, you also get a quick overview of what the woman did, or is doing. There's such a vast variety of phenomenal women. From scientists, to athletes, to celebrities & activists, there's someone for every type of young lady to look up to. Let's just say that I already know what I'll be giving a few people for Christmas, this year.
This a lovely spin on the traditional quote books. Each quote is accompanied by the life story of the person who originated the quote and links in with the subject matter of the quote. Enclosed in the pages are some inspirational words from throughout history both known and lesser known. This is the perfect pick me up in the current climate.
This book contains some beautiful and inspiring quotes, many from people I had never heard of. All of these quotes by strong women that is very much needed to encourage young girls and women to believe in themselves and what they are capable of. This book looks beautiful aesthetically as well.
I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Inspirational quotes from even more inspirational women, accompanied by short biographies of their remarkable lives. Perfect for young girls, teens, and grown women — it’s definitely something we all need!
Beautifullly designed and put together, the perfect gift! An uplifting and inspiring book full of quotes and life stories from remarkable women. I loved this, I will be buying a physical copy!
This would be a cute book to keep on your Boss Girl desk, with nice layout of quotes and follow up mini bio on each speaker that the quote is from. I believe physically its much too small for a coffee table book, but its good for that as well. Something to thumb through, not read cover to cover.
I enjoyed reading this book and learning about some women I had not heard of before. The short biographies were informative. I wrote down several quotes to remember. I wish there would have been photos of the women referenced. I like to put names and faces together.
It's a nice little book compiling profiles of inspiring leaders. I don't get the point of the "chapters" but hey. It's not a biography, just a short summary, if you like one of those women, you need to get more information about them elsewhere. But it's a nice little intro.
Neat book with great quotes and beautiful pages. I didn't know many of the women included though, and I personally would have prefferred a cast including more women in science and tech.
