Low Tox Life is for anybody who wants to help the environment, from joining the war against plastic, to using planet friendly cleaning products, eating environmentally friendly, and low tox every day care.
Ever stopped to read the list of ingredients in the products you use every day? Or maybe you’re confused by what those ingredients actually are and whether they are good for you? Low Tox Life , by activist and educator Alexx Stuart, gently clears a path through the maze of mass-market ingredient cocktails, providing simple alternatives to the unknown nasties found in everyday products.
Focusing on four key Body, Home, Food and Mind, Low Tox Life , is your non-judgmental handbook to limiting the toxic load, for you, your family and the planet. At the forefront of the low tox movement, Alexx shares the latest science and advice from experts in each area, and tackles everything from endocrine-disruptors in beauty products to going low plastic in a high-plastic world, and how to clean without a hint of harmful toxins and avoid the products that are masquerading as non-toxic.
To get you started, Low Tox Life shows you how to create low tox household and personal products, like dry shampoo, oven cleaner and even a head lice treatment; recipes for delicious low tox family feasts; and tips for navigating ‘greenwashing’, ethical shopping, reducing food waste and low toxing your mind. Alexx also shares her story of the health crisis that inspired her dramatic shift to a low tox life.
You don't need to be a full-time homesteader with a cupboard full of organic linens to go low tox. Start small, switching or ditching one nasty at a time, and enjoy the process as a positive one for you and the planet.
This book is beautifully presented and is a great beginners guide to reducing the toxic load in our lives. It’s quite frightening to see how much we flood or bodies with on a daily basis. Although some of the suggestions will be out of people’s budgets, Alexx Stuart makes sure she discusses the many changes that can be made easily and cheaply and her ethos is always about making changes how and when you can and that just a couple of changes can make a big difference.
The one thing that did disappoint (why I dropped a star) was the book would often direct you to her website for more details on a topic but when you go there the information is not there. This is not a huge issue as most of it is covered in the book but it was a bit annoying.
Unwhelmed by the book but overwhelmed by the feeling that the odds are stacked against us. Its a full time job really implementing ideas from the book, which most dont have. And I wonder how much impact it would make when millions of goods and new chemicals keep flooding the market. Reducing overall consumption is currently what I am aiming at. Let me see if this book helps in decision making or just confuses me more...
This was a really good read about toxic chemicals. It's easy to read and understand and the design is pleasing on the eyes. I'm glad I read it. There is a lot of good info here.
Pulls you in with some legitimate science, points to peer reviewed sources and then BAM does the old bait and switch with old wives’ tales and generic meaningless statements, e.g. “this chemical is also in petrol”. If you read this, be very critical of the claims! Recipes look good though.
I really liked this book. I’m aware 3 stars might be low in the minds of some people, but simply put this book isn’t really designed to be useful or impactful to the reader cover to cover. It’s split into five sections in your life where you can make positive changes. And not all of them resonate or are really even needed to be read depending on who you are. I’ve rated it with this in mind. I personally found minimal value in section 2: Low tox body, but found the most impactful and useful section for me was section 5: low tox mind. Some statements in the book are intentionally misleading to get a point across which is unfortunate. But for the most part, this is a good book for anyone trying to feel and be a better person.
4 Captain Planet stars. A really great book, filled with ideas to help reduce your family’s use of plastic and chemicals. We are already pretty far along in our journey towards a tox free life and already doing most of what the author suggested, but it has helped to reinvigorate me. I loved the sections about how to talk to other people about why you’re doing what you’re doing. And I have saved some of the DIY home and body product recipes, which look great. My favourite quote: “I set myself a simple non-negotiable challenge: if I forgot my reusable bag, I had to either carry the items or leave them there.” Me to a tee!
Let me start by saying I love love love this book!
Extremely informative and laid out in a simple, aesthetically pleasing format. This book was very well executed. Perfect for a beginner in the “Low Tox Life.”
I will definitely be going through my bathroom shelves with this book in hand.
Also a suggestion if this book is something you’re into: there is a free app called “Think Dirty” that allows you to scan the barcodes on your products at home to dissect the ingredients and rate their toxicity.
This is a beautifully put together book. It would be a great first taste of the low fox lifestyle. But, if you have already started the journey, it’s rather “meh”. I wish it had more recipes, practical tips, and specific resources. There is some good advice - like bring a stainless steel straw to restaurants to avoid plastic! But I finished this wanting more specifics.
This book delivers exactly what it promises: information on how to avoid toxins and actionable steps on how to make incremental changes in your own life.
I appreciated that a lot of her options and steps take into account many people can’t afford expensive products and lead already busy lives where lifestyle changes can be difficult.
A solid amount of woo hidden behind some decent tips for replacing a bunch of chemicals with more natural alternatives. I’m sure most of these things are searchable online but it’s helpful to have them all together in a neatly presented book like this!
A long read. Can feel tedious at times however has some good tips on how to change to low tox options. Can feel very overwhelming can feel like there is toxins in literally everything you use. But some good ideas that can be easy to implement.
I really enjoyed this book. She has done a great job with the research. I really like how the main message is "start small, achieve what you can and build from there."
Informational, practical, pretty, and not judgey. I’ll keep coming back to this one as a reference for specific chemicals etc. and for the skincare and meal recipes!
This book is an easy read and a good beginners guide to reducing the toxin load on your body and the environment. It also includes a lot of recipes for healthy meals and toxin-free household swaps.
I love Alexx enthusiasm and ‚there is no black and white and everyone has to figure out their own way’ attitude. This is a great book to get started. I would have loved some more depth in some places and was a little disappointed not to find promised resources on the website - the book refers to a page on the low tox website for documentaries to watch, more to read on clothing & textiles, etc but the page only sends you to the shop.
"I believe that big shifts can result from the simple micro-actions of millions of people coming together.” I’m a bit new to the subject of low tox living. While I do my best to bring my own reusable bags/metal straws, and make conscious choices when it comes to products I use, I sometimes fall short and revert to old habits. I picked up this book at the library in the hopes that I would be more educated about low tox living. I found this book to be well-presented, with a clear division of key areas where we could lessen our toxic load. I learned some good ideas from the DIY recipes -- from skincare to household cleaning products. There were just some sections in the book that left me a tad overwhelmed, as it felt like there are toxins in literally everything (mattresses, bed sheets, clothing!). However, I appreciated that the author included information about scientific research in the notes section of the book. It would be helpful for anyone who would like to learn more about the subject. Overall, it was an easy read that motivated me to start making better lifestyle choices, one green step at a time. 🌿 Rating: ✰✰✰ ꜱᴀᴛɪꜱꜰᴀᴄᴛᴏʀʏ
