Spend the day at school and join the little girl in everything she does in a day—from breakfast to bedtime. Meet her classmates and try to spot what each friend is up to in every lesson throughout the book. Can you guess what they want to be when they grow up? This reassuring introduction to the school day for little ones has bright, friendly artwork and is perfect for children about to go off to school for the first time.
‘Going to School’ follows a girl in her school day and looks at all the different things they do. It would good to share with Pre-schoolers and EYFS children at at the start of the school year.
At the front of the book there is a page with all the different characters on with their interests which helps to show the variety of children within classrooms. There’s lots of representation of children from different ethnic backgrounds although not explicitly stated and it’s nice that they look into where different people had come from. However there isn’t any representation of children with disabilities.
Follow a child as she attends her school day with her classmates. They attend many different classes and share their varied interests. The illustrations are full of tons of details and are interesting to look at, there’s many topics to discuss to about what this children might study in different classes. The students are racially and ethnically diverse, and one page shows students representing different nations they or their families come from. There are not any represented with visual disabilities.
This one had sparse words taking you through a typical school day with a focus on one narrator but lots of other kids you could observe moving through each of the pages with her. Got this out of the library for my 4 year old before she started school, and she really enjoyed reading it over and over, especially (and this is on brand for her) the part about lunch. Neat to have a book like this that takes some of the energy/aesthetic of a seek and find, mixes it with a "which character are you" and uses it to introduce kids to school. I thought it was spare but pretty effective.
Going to School is a fairly predictable 'What you do all day in school' book. It neither wowed me nor disappointed me. The bright, bold illustration are very busy, but can almost be treated as a 'Can you find?" game. The front cover introduces you to the students and the end asks you to fins clues in the pages to see what each friend would like to be. It's a great twist.
