Dr. Ann Louise was recognized as one of the top ten nutritionists in the country by Self magazine and was the recipient of the American Medical Writers Association award for excellence.
She was the first to warn of the environmental hazards of parasites in her classic Guess What Came To Dinner? Parasites and Your Health. In Your Body Knows Best, Dr. Ann Louise was the first to discuss the blood type/weight theory and proclaim that one diet may not be right for every body - an idea that is only now becoming mainstream. She was the first to offer natural remedies for menopausal symptoms in Super Nutrition for Menopause (now in print as Hot Times) and is widely credited as the first to popularize the term “perimenopause” in her New York Times bestseller, Before The Change.
Dr. Ann Louise forged new ways of thinking about obesity early on in her career. She was the first to proclaim that obesity was caused by the lack of dietary fats and the wrong kind of carbohydrates in her book Beyond Pritikin, published in 1988. In Beyond Pritikin, she predicted that the fat-free, carb-rich diet was creating weight gain, sugar cravings, fatigue and diabetes.
Today, she continues to dedicate herself to carving out new landmarks in holistic health and healing based on science and ancient healing arts. Through her many books, website, and blog (Dr. Ann Louise’s Edge on Health), Dr. Ann Louise offers a “virtual” health support system for men and women that provides educational and self-health assessment services to empower people everywhere to achieve total health. Her latest book, a companion to the bestselling Fat Flush Plan, was released in December 2009. Fat Flush for Life, takes a seasonal approach to burn stubborn body fat all year long, integrating groundbreaking new Fat Flush diets with corresponding fitness and wellness programs.
There is a wealth of useful info in this book; unfortunately it comes packaged tight with buzzwords (“Radical” and “Radical metabolism” appear so often, some may be tempted to turn this into a drinking game) and frequent references to losing weight, fighting the bulge, fitting in your skinny jeans, and the like. I just don’t understand why it needs to be marketed as a weight-loss diet. Why not focus on all the health benefits?? Sales, I guess.
I find it frustrating, because the book does contain a lot of recommendations and explanations that would be useful to anyone trying to stay healthy, not just people looking for a quick weight loss scheme.
I also didn’t like that the author keep blowing hot and cold when it comes to Paleo and Keto, maligning them and pushing the same generalization and mis-information you can find all over the web, when trying to elevate her recommended plan; but still mentioning them in a fairly positive note when it serves her purposes as far as showing benefits from more healthy fats and a whole-foods diet. Hmmmm.... ok 🤨
Last but not least, the dietary guidelines sound good, but when it comes right down to it, the menu plan shows a fairly average hypocaloric “clean” diet.
Having read most of the author’s previously works, I was excited to finally see what revolutionary info she would share here, but considering alllll the aboveand the fact that a large portion of the info was contained, on one form or another, in previous books... I’m SO disappointed. I love the health info but even with that, I can’t rate this above 2 1/2 STARS.
I actually did not finish reading this book as I felt it was becoming too austere in the practices recommended. I got halfway through the book and simply quit. I took notes on the first 8 chapters and that is all I want to remember about the book. The author recommends too many huge changes that will probably improve your health, but you will probably become more neurotic with everything you do, as daily life as we know it will undoubtedly violate one of her many rules about what to eat and what NOT to eat.
I have read many many books on health and nutrition. Radical Metabolism is the most comprehensive one I have read. Ann Louise Gittleman addresses the absolute essentials of the human body as it relates to health. That is what I find most impressive! Gittleman gets to the real issue of what may be stalling your weight loss, whether you have been doing Paleo, Keto, or low carb. I think she’s on to the missing link, addressing metabolism and how the whole system can get gunked up with toxins etc… Well worth the read!
If I could give this book negative stars I would. Ann is a raging IDIOT who blames VACCINES for obesity. With a wild LIE about "vaccines contain heavy metals and GMOs!" No, there is NO heavy metals in vaccines. As for GMOs - GMOs are COMPLETELY SAFE and only inbred morons who also think vaccines turn you into a gay, Autistic Satanist believe GMOs are dangerous. This book wouldn't even be useful as toilet paper. That's how bad it is.
This is Louise latest book and she is concentrating on losing fat , detox and cleanses. She has recipes and menu suggestions for smoothies and foods during the cleanse. She also talks in length about your gallbladder and what it does and why it malfunctions.
Not sure that I like a book that is presented as a self-help book, but is actually an infomercial... *headdesk* :(
There were some very good ideas and points in this book, but trust me, if you are a country guy or gal, most of these ideas just won't work due to lack of accessibility... grrr
I have been eating healthy using available products and am slowly losing weight that doesn't appear to just jump back on overnight... so, I'm good with "whole" foods and correct portion sizes, makes my life much easier than what I heard in this book. But if you have tons of money, lots of free time and live in a large city? Give this a try... just sayin'!
I'm not even 5 pages into the first chapter and this is already bunk. Again, anything that tells you to detox or that toxins are causing your weight issues is garbage.
I was immediately suspicious of her credentials so I googled it "In 2002, she was given a Ph.D. in holistic nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health, an unaccredited and now defunct diploma mill.[7]"
Strong no from me, after getting 65% through it. I had to stop, as it all felt like it was meant to make you afraid, of just about everything around you. EMFs? Hide. Plastics? Throw them out. Fillings? You're fucked. I can't live like that, and in fact don't want to. Yes, I wish it was a healthier world and I'm definitely doing my part to keep our environment and our home naturally clean and livable, but I'm not going to obsess about all the ways we're being slowly poisoned
Interesting topic and presented in a manner that a layperson can readily understand. Somewhat sensationalized and not all suggestions are supported by peer reviewed clinical studies which I always prefer. Anecdotal evidence, while interesting, is not always duplicated in the readers life.
Radical Metabolism goes beyond ordinary diet books to give you real, in-depth solutions for getting the weight off once and for all. If you've ever wondered WHY you can't lose those stubborn pounds, this book explains it. And if you've ever had gallbladder problems, this book is for you! If you don't want to delve into the specifics, but go straight to the solutions, the Ann Louise provides those, too. No more yo-yo dieting -- this book lives up to its name -- RADICAL!
A lot of good ideas. But i have no clue how to do the more extreme elements, like the aluminum clear out, the electronics bypass, and the sheer numbers on the lists of pesticide hormone or otherwise toxic food. You'd have to be rich and live in a bubble. So, I choose my battles and do the best I can.
