Overview: In Dargyn, magic is forbidden, and the penalty for using it is death. Kaida, one of the great dragon riders, suddenly finds herself torn between duty to her country, the protection of her dragon, and loyalty to her only child when her former husband turns in their son to the authorities.

Hogan’s world-building skills are top-notch as she presents a caste-like society where everyone knows their place, educators—like teachers and librarians—are at the top of the ladder, and menial workers—such as weavers and servers—remain at the bottom of the social pyramid. The author tosses in an additional element of negative bias and fear of possible arrest against those who once saved their people through the use of magic—including the dragon riders. An ever-present sense of suspense and foreboding permeates this tale with a series of murders and terrorist attacks urging readers to pace themselves as the responsible individuals in this page-turning read are identified in due time.

Hogan’s characters are well-developed and unique. Her creativity in formulating awkward situations between strongly divided family members while pairing other characters with extremely supportive individuals maintains a beautiful balance in this story. Providing a telepathic link between riders and their dragons—who seem to have insight into the inner workings of this world and its inhabitants, greatly enhances the storyline as much as it affects its outcome.

Hogan’s unique vocabulary and nomenclatures do take some getting used to, so this may be a somewhat difficult read in the beginning chapters, but once one gets used to this charming but dangerous new world, getting lost between the lines and pages of this epic novel is a given.

With no more violence than the average teenage read and no sexual situations whatsoever, I highly recommend this read for ages 13 and up.

🐉🐉ONE ROARING ADVENTURE🐉🐉
Drilling dragons! Mirren knocked the brakes off this thrilling gem, breaking out the heavy artillery, locked and loaded, blazing through on a flaming inferno with a vengeance and kicking the gates wide open, blasting this baby to life flawlessly. Stumbling through a minefield of daring drama, unveiling revelations, damning betrayal, chilling intrigue, escalating danger and spiraling suspense, maneuvering through the cunning manipulations of deceptive deeds and dubious actions, wrapping this gem up sleek, shiny and tight. Tempting, tangled and tightly entwined, baring the crazy quirks and defying bents, putting our characters through their paces, testing them in ways they could have never envisioned. Restrictions are heightened and exploited, noting the fervent facts, feels and fiascos, shifting this baby into overdrive, blasting it into a tailspin with a mind-blowing culmination. You feel everything the characters feel, you become a part of the story instead of on the sidelines. The characters, interactions and charged atmosphere along with relatable qualities and individual traits add depth and diversity, transforming into formidable personalities. The scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and vivid descriptions that feel as though you were transported to ground zero with them. Remarkable job Mirren, thanks for sharing this little jewel with us.

Dragonhaze is a vivid, compelling story with strong characters and a good storyline. I slid into the storyworld quite easily, but had a hard time coming out again - read the whole thing in under 24 hours. The violence wasn't that graphic and the language was very cleverly done with only a few 'hard' words which are well placed and appropriately used, and there wasn't really any sexual content (though adult establishments are mentioned several times; it's not inappropriate in my opinion). It was a really good story about family and choices and what's important to the individual, it has some of the most amazing dragons I've met in a while, and the characters are full and well rounded. I am gonna have to get the sequel as soon as it comes out. I love how it wrapped up the book but not the story thread!

A war is coming again. It’s been a hundred years since the dragon wars and magic is forbidden. Anyone with magi is killed no matter how young or old. Risper is now bonded with Laynin’s great granddaughter, Kaida. But dragon riders aren’t revered as they were and are at the beck and call of the reasoners who find magic and “take care” of them. But war is brewing and the magin are gathering, but their leader is insane and is ready to sacrifice innocent people to bring magic back. And not only is Kaida’s son a magin, but his father turned him in. Now which side does he fight on? I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A very exciting first book in the Dragonhall Trilogy! Full of intrigue and, of course, dragons.

Good read

I love anything with dragons and magic. I am going to have to buy the next book. I hate being left hanging. Keep up with the story.

This is a very interesting story about what happens when people become afraid of magic. We have dragons and people who are bonded with them. It's a good start to a series
