This is a fantastic travel guide for all 62 National Parks. The book gives lots of general information and tips for visiting National Parks before getting into the list of parks. I really liked that they create a list of parks by "best of" lists like - best hiking, best for wildlife, etc. The parks are divided into areas with Alaska and California getting their own sections since each state has several parks. Otherwise it's divided into geographic areas like Southwest, The South, Islands, etc. Each park has several pages of in-depth information about that park including maps, planning your time, sights, scenic drives, hiking, recreation, where to stay, getting there, getting around, and sights nearby. I also like that at each first page for a park there is a spot for the keepsake stamps that you can find in visitor's centers of each park if you're using the book to collect your visiting stamps. At the end is a chapter titled Essentials that gives a brief history of National Parks and the parks service, as well as road rules, health and safety tips, and travel tips. I would definitely recommend this book if you're planning to start visiting some National Parks or starting to make your dream vacation plans.
Danny and I bought this book after seeing Becky Lomax's author appearance. She showed up with slides, amusing anecdotes, and great tips, such as good alternatives to the crowded parks like Yellowstone and Yosemite. If you have the chance, I recommend seeing Lomax's presentation. She inspired us. Her enthusiasm will have you buying the book whether you intended to or not. But if you have any plans to visit our national parks, the book is worthwhile. It's well-organized and informative. I'm a big fan of the whole Moon series.
Really helpful guide that gives an overview of what you should definitely know before visiting each national park. It also explained all the lotteries, reservation processes and other logistical info that’s difficult to find elsewhere.
Moon USA National Parks: The Complete Guide to All 59 Parks (Travel Guide) By Becky Lomax, 2018 edition ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)
Another great guidebook overviewing the "Mighty 5", Utah's five national parks. To start, I skimmed through some of the NPs I've visited in the past to see how my experience compared with their write-ups. Pretty solid information & total agreement with their featured "Top 3 Experiences" featuring in-depth descriptions for each NP. General details about the hours, permits, & shuttle buses plus popular scenic spots with photos & maps. There are now 62 NP for the most recent edition of the guidebook ( my library copy was 2018) but everything I needed to know about Utah is still relevant.
This is an incredibly great guide to park adventures. It is packed full of pertinent information in a readable format with outstanding photos. The book shows serious research and honestly assessed items such as • Top 3 (sites not to miss) • Best hikes • Where to stay • How to avoid crowds It’s definitely my favorite, carry along reference for any National Park I’m exploring.
Short simple review. The photos alone make me want to visit each and every one of our wondrous National Parks. Filled with things to do there including great scenic drives. Not a book one would read cover to cover but one to pick a region and linger there for a spell.
This is organized really well, and has a ton of great information without being overwhelming. It's definitely coming in handy for planning my national park roadtrip.
To be fair, I didn’t read the whole book. Just got it to read up on Big Bend. Great info, amazing pics! Definitely helpful for planning our upcoming trip.
I have now visited 8 National parks. This book was very useful - informative and well put together. I especially like the format. It's organized by states, has an overall map, and room for stamps and notes. The description of the parks is interesting and informative but not too wordy. It does its job a guide and let's you do more reseach Disappointed that most parks are out West but that is not the book's fault.
This year I set a goal to travel to all of the national parks, so first step of course was research… and this book is the best! I’ve got numerous books about the parks now, but this one has proven to be the most informational. I read it front to back, and have used it to help plan each of my trips so far. If you plan on traveling the parks this book is a must have!
Also, luckily enough I found it at Costco for super cheap!
Bought as a companion to Fodor's Guide to the National Parks of the West - I think I have a slight preference for Fodor's, but the Moon guide has better pictures (not as important to me, my eyes are better than a camera), the maps are really helpful, and Moon does include guides for parks east of the Rockies, which Fodor's doesn't. Recommended as a resource for visiting the parks.
I downloaded the Kindle version for our road trip across America and it was the perfect companion to visiting the National Parks. We hit 12 new parks on our trip and this resource helped us pick which activities to do while we were visiting.
