Mindful Crafting: The Maker's Creative Journey

Rate this book
Explore how crafting and mindfulness come together to soothe our mind, body and soul.

Apart from the sheer enjoyment of using our hands to create something new, crafting helps us to connect with who we are. From the comfort of our own home we can be in the moment with our materials and our mind.

Through focused meditations, personal anecdote and expert insight , Mindful Crafting unearths the true value of craft, and how we can meet our soul’s yearning to be creative and open ourselves up to infinite possibilities.  For all crafters - whether you’re a potter or a painter, practise needlework, woodwork or jewellery-making – this book will support and encourage you wherever your crafting journey takes you.

Sarah Samuel looks at the steps you might encounter, including finding space and structure, changing direction, and common obstacles like creative block and lack of time, and shares the mindful practices that will see you through.

“When we prioritise our joy we are prioritising our soul”
***
I found this book deeply impacting, more so than any mindfulness books I have read before. Some mindfulness books can be a bit wishy washy, but this one engaged in almost a therapeutic dialogue with the reader. Many of the exercises and practices discussed have been things therapists and counsellors have recommended to me. The advantage of it being so broad in genre means I can recommend it to anyone who is in anyway creative - be they knitters, embroiderers, or even wood workers! (Not that I know any wood workers at the moment)

This came along at a good time - when I felt “stuck” couldn’t get started with new projects or finish the old. The meditations helped me realize I was missing the playful part of crafting- just to be creative with no product or end goal in mind. It’s a cycle of creativity as much as the seasons. This one I’ll keep to read again the next time I get “stuck.”

Some great quotes!

“What is Art? It is the response of man’s creative soul to the Real.” I devoured this book over Christmas and have been inspired to start painting again. Love the quotes from the various philosophers, poets and sages.

A calm and insightful read that highlighted and validated things I knew within me, without having necessarily openly acknowledged them.
There is so much more common sense in our daily lives, it is nice to shake the complications off and get back to basics.

Just wasn't for me.

Accidentally borrowed it again. Still not for me. Little bit too 'Eat, Pray, Love'. Which lots of people found life changing, but I hated.
