Horses have been the inspiration for hundreds of works of art over the centuries. This book celebrates the horse in all its glory, from its role as working animal in war and sport, to beloved pet. The horse's beauty and majesty is caught by artists as diverse as Stubbs, Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, Magritte, Frink, and Freud.
The Book of the Horse is a cool and quirky collection of equine art and illustration by artists from around the world.
Interspersed through the illustrations are short texts about the artists and their subjects. Beautifully designed and packaged, the book will appeal to horse lovers of all ages.
Some of the art in here is fantastic— I love that there’s a mix of old and modern. However, the writing that accompanies the text is rather dull, often facts about the artist rather than the piece itself, and it often focuses on famous well known authors rather than revealing insights into less none artists.
Also, very Western art focused. Also, uses “man” as a generalized term for all people. And lastly, is full of hokey quotes that feel out of place for an art book and don’t add much.
Loved this! So much beautiful and inspiring artwork and gorgeous interpretations of horses. I do wish there was a wider range of cultures and eras of art included but it was still great.
Found in a Waterstones in Manchester ("The largest book store in the North"), this book is going to become my favourite coffee table book.
Featuring works by artists such as Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas, and Rene Magritte, this book provides a nice overview of the image of horses in the art of Western artists.
It also features a couple of paintings from Japanese, Arabic, and South American cultures, although, like one other reviewer has noted, I would have enjoyed seeing more diverse works, especially from Latin cultures, where horses hold a big spot.
