Beneath the famous Brooklyn landmark, love is hidden but not denied:
All his life, Alexi Kharpov has dreamed of traveling to unknown exciting places instead of working at his family’s frozen custard stand on the famous Coney Island boardwalk. Every year is the same until a gorgeous man picks a spot in front of his stand to sing, captivating him with his beautiful voice. After two summers of listening, it might finally be time for him to cross that boardwalk and take a chance.
Opera singer Cameron Maxwell has traveled the world, but the sight of the beautiful man serving custard to tourists touches his heart like nothing ever has before. A summer fling might be exactly what he needs to put his problems out of his mind, but the last thing Cam expects is to want the summer to last forever.
It’s a season of discovery for both men who learn to dig deep within their heads and hearts to decide whether secrets old and new should remain buried, or if love is too important to keep hidden under the boardwalk.
Felice Stevens writes romance because what is better than people falling in love? Her favorite part of a romance novel is that first kiss…sigh. She loves creating stories of hopes and dreams and happily ever afters. Her stories are character-driven, rich with the sights, sounds and flavors of New York City and filled with men who are sometimes deeply flawed but always real.
Felice writes M/M romance because she believes that everyone deserves a happily ever after. Having traveled all over the world, she can safely say that the universal language that unites people is love. Felice has written in a variety of sub-genres, including contemporary, paranormal and has a mystery series as well.
Felice is a two-time Lambda Literary Award nominee and the Lambda award-winner for Best Gay Romance for her book, The Ghost and Charlie Muir, as well as the e-Lit gold medal winner in romance for Broken Silence.
Under the Boardwalk is book one in the Landmarks series by Felice Stevens. This is a M/M romance that is sexy and sweet and so swoony. It’s a short read so it’s perfect for a rainy afternoon.
Alexi Kharpov is twenty six years old. He has a very traditional Russian family. Alexi is the first in his family to go to college. He also works for his father and uncle during the school year and in the summer he works in his father’s frozen custard stand on the famous Coney Island boardwalk. Alexi loves the ocean, it’s always been a part of his life. But he has also never left New York. He dreams of traveling the world and seeing the sights. Alexi is and has always been gay. But, he’s never told anyone. His hook-ups are few and secret. He’s afraid his family would never accept him if they knew. So he keeps his true dreams and his true self from everyone closest to him.
“Alexi’s heart beat faster. The day which started out so ordinary he could’ve cried had turned into a chance for new adventure.”
Cameron Maxwell, I believe was getting close to his mid thirties, He is an opera singer but has spent the last two summers in New York singing on the boardwalk. He loves the joy he brings to those that stop and listen. Especially the cute man in the frozen custard stand. Cam likes to pretend he’s singing just to him, even though he has no idea who he is. Finally, the perfect opportunity arises and Cam speaks to Alexi. Their connection is undeniable. He realizes right away that Alexi isn’t out. But that’s okay. He just wants them to get to know each other. Maybe this can just be a summer fling? Or maybe it will lead to more?
“Life is about taking the chances we’re given and living them. I want to take my chance with you.”
As Alexi and Cam spend time together, their feelings grow stronger and the prospect of something more than just a summer fling burns brighter. Alexi has never been in love, never had a relationship. But something wonderful happened as he spent time with Cam. He began to stand up just a little straighter, he felt stronger, more confident. He hasn’t even known Cam that long but he has quickly become the center of his world.
“Falling in love is easy. It doesn’t take any time. Staying in love is the hard part.”
I really enjoyed these two. I loved watching how they both grew stronger from the love they shared. Was their road easy, no. They both had a lot to learn. But they were quickly learning that they were happier, better, stronger together than they ever were on their own.
This is a stand alone, there is no cliff hanger. But, Felice has written a short novella that continues Cam and Alexi’s story. You just get a little bit more of how their lives turned out. It’s called Down By The Sea.
If you want something sweet and short with a good dash of sexy, then check this out!
This starts off with Alexi, an endearing character who’s quiet and unassuming and basically a dreamer. Alexi desires to leave his family’s frozen custard business for adventure and worries his traditional Russian relatives won’t understand why. He also fears his family wouldn't understand or accept his sexuality and thus, he’s just anxious to finish college so he can start exploring all that is beyond Brooklyn. However, things change when his crush from across the boardwalk says hello.
Cameron is a music teacher who spends his time off doing what he loves, and that’s singing. He’s had more than his fair share of traveling the world, and he’s now content to spend his lazy summers performing along Coney Island. Cameron’s not blind to the gorgeous custard guy from afar, so when he notices Alexi’s interest, it’s just the nudge he needs to make a move.
Though they each approach this whirlwind summer fling with no expectations, both Alexi and Cameron quickly realize that they are falling hard and fast - all of which is exhilarating and scary. Problem is, Alexi really has no plan to stay for the long run.
Narrated by the lovely Nick J. Russo, he nicely brings an endearing vulnerability to Alexi and a kind confidence to Cameron. For me, Russo always gets the emotions just right, and he never falls short during the smexy times. Yep!
Again, these two were really quite lovely together. Things may be moving at warp speed but Alexi and Cameron talk, they support the other, and they’re not going to hold back. Overall, a very enjoyable story that’s not too angsty, with truly likeable characters who take a chance on each other and win! Enjoy!

If the title alone doesn’t have that iconic song by The Drifters running through your head, I guarantee it will be at some time during this story. Felice Stevens brings the Coney Island boardwalk to life in this romantic story. Even if you’ve never been there, you’ll have no trouble picturing it as Alexi and Cam fall in love under the boardwalk, down by the sea (okay, so it’s the Atlantic Ocean but that doesn’t fit with the song).
I was hooked from the Prologue. Alexi and Cam have been secretly eyeing each other for two summers across the boardwalk; Cam as he sings for tips and Alexi from behind the counter of his family’s custard stand. Alexi has never left Brooklyn, living with and hiding from his family, including his father who is stuck in the old Russian ways and his judgmental cousin Dimitri. He dreams of one day traveling the world but for now is stuck working and going to school. Cam is out and proud, has traveled the world and has a live for today attitude. A summer fling with the adorable guy at the custard stand who he’s been eyeing since last summer would be just the thing. When he finally catches Alexi’s eye as he’s checking Cam out, Cam makes the first move and asks Alexi out.
Things heat up very quickly between them, despite Alexi’s fear of being seen. After a week of stolen moments under the boardwalk and on the beach, nights at Cam’s apartment and a couple of dates both men know they are falling hard. They don’t want to admit it out loud, but neither wants to see things end come September. But a future together might not be possible when both men get news that could change their lives and will require some difficult decisions. Complicated family dynamics and uncertain futures could ensure their relationship doesn’t make it through the summer.
Felice Stevens packs a lot into this novella, especially where Alexi is concerned. Alexi first comes off as innocent and a bit naïve, but there is a fire and strength inside him that being with Cam has stoked. Alexi now has more than one reason to take a leap and reach out to grab everything he has always wanted and he is almost ready to do it. Cam has seemingly lived out all of Alexi’s dreams already, but for different reasons. When Cam can no longer avoid his past decisions coming back to affect his future and how much he wants more time with Alexi, his method of dealing with things is avoidance. One thing he is certain of is that regardless of how much he likes Alexi, he won’t do anything to keep him from pursuing his dreams and experiencing all life has to offer.
This is a hot, sweet, romantic beach read, although you may want to get in front of the AC since Alexi and Cam have amazing chemistry and share plenty of sexy times, but there is also plenty of character growth and emotional ups and downs. At one point I was alternately cheering and holding my breath as Alexi finds the strength to confront one of his biggest fears; not everything is neat and tidy in the end, but there is hope that in time it will be. As far as Alexi’s and Cam’s big decisions went, I thought they played out realistically and perfectly.
Part of The Landmarks Series of stories (the first being Ferry-Tale by Kade Boehme) it’s a standalone and ends happily for Alexi and Cam as they start a new adventure. Consider this the official start of my campaign to get Felice Stevens to write a follow-up story to see just how things progress for these two.
Alexi Kharpov works at his family’s frozen custard stand on Coney Island, but he dreams of travel and a world that he’s never seen until the day he sees a gorgeous man standing in front of his family’s stand sinding like an angel. Than his dreams start to include the beautiful man who’s captivated Alexi’s attention and his heart.
Cameron Maxwell travelled the world as an opera singer and nothing has captivated him like the beautiful young man serving custard.
When Cam starts a summer fling with the attractive young man. Neither of them is counting on their feelings lasting beyond the warmth of the summer sun but when summer ends both men realize that their feelings have gotten stronger and their lives more complicated…
Alexi has been given the chance of a lifetime to travel and live abroad. To see a world, he’s only dreamed about, but can he do this when his heart wants something different and if he doesn’t how badly will he come to regret it and even scarier is Alexi’s desire to live a life that’s true and honest…a life that could cost him his family.
Cam knows that Alexi needs to make the most of what’s been offered to him and he doesn’t want to lose him, but he’s determined not to hold him back and Cam’s got his own issue to deal with the condition that ended his opera career is back and he needs to take care of himself. It’s not going to be easy, but Alexi and Cam need to find a way to follow their dreams and protect their love.
‘Under the Boardwalk’ is one of the sweetest NA, coming out stories that I’ve read in a long time. I loved both Alexi and Cameron. These two were so perfect for each other. At not quite 4 hours of listening time this wasn’t a long story and thankfully the author kept the focus to the relationship between Alexi and Cam. There were other life issues for both Alexi and Cam as individuals and as a couple but none of it ever overwhelmed the romance and was easily woven into the story. Whether it was Alexi’s coming out to his family or Cam dealing with his health issue it was all part of Alexi and Cam’s growing relationship.
I loved the secondary characters in this story from Cam’s parents who were loving and supportive to Alexi’s family which was such a mixed bag…his cousin who at first seemed homophobic but was really more misinformed and uninformed than anything and wanted to be supportive and there for his cousin…so not perfect but none of us are and what mattered most is that he loved his cousin and was willing to change his thinking to be open to the fact that whether Alexi was gay or straight he was still his cousin and still the same cousin that he’d been the day before. Then there was Alexi’s dad…not a total write off but he’s got a ways to go before he earns forgiveness for his behavior and more importantly there’s Alexi’s mom and his babushka (grandmother) these two women were AMAZING!!! Seriously for them alone this story was worthwhile.
And last but not least we have the ending…ok, I loved the ending seriously it worked for me and was definitely what flipped this story from a 3.5, precarious 4 stars to a solid 4 stars and sorry no, I’m not giving away the ending because that would just be wrong.
One of my other favorite things about this one was that it was narrated by Nick J. Russo…yep, still a fave of mine and as always, he did not fail me. I loved his voices but especially Alexi’s and that his accent varied becoming stronger during more emotional times and less noticeable at other times while it could be disconcerting it was also a realistic reflection of what happens when someone whose native tongue isn’t English finds themselves in an environment where they’re speaking English as much or more than their native tongue. I’ve known people who were Scottish, Russian, Australian, Belgium and various other ethnicities and while it doesn’t happen to everyone many of them when we were speaking while they never fully lost their accent if they became really emotional about something whether happy or agitated their accents generally became much stronger and more noticeable so for me Alexi’s accent and how it occasionally varied seemed natural and realistic but it also kept me on my toes as a listener.
‘Under the Boardwalk’ is only my second listening experience with a Felice Stevens novel and while I definitely enjoyed this story more than the previous one, I really can’t find fault with the choice of narrator for either story and I’m looking forward to seeing what else this author has written that I can enjoy on audio and who knows I may even slide an e-book or two onto the reading pile as well.
This was a sweet story about coming out, finding love and having dreams come true…so all in all there’s a lot of good feelz here…definitely recommended.
************************* An audio book of ‘Under the Boardwalk’ was graciously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Under the Boardwalk by Felice Stevens is a New Adult coming of age story set in Coney Island, New York. Two young men with very different upbringings spent one summer noticing the other and hoping to make contact and the next summer actually acting on the attraction. I enjoyed this book a lot, but given it was a novella at times I felt the story was a bit rushed and would have liked more time for these two characters to really get to know one another as their relationship went from zero to sixty in the flash of an eye. It was however, well written with interesting characters, and realistic actions for the ages of these two young men.
For an entire summer while working at his family’s custard stand on the Boardwalk Alexi listened to the Boardwalk singer and dreamed of meeting the man with the voice like an angel, it didn’t hurt that the glimpses he got of the man made him wish for more, but firmly in the closet Alexi just dreamed not knowing that Cameron (Cam) the singer was checking out Alexi in the stand every chance he got.
For Alexi who has spent his whole life in Brooklyn and living and working with his family, Alexi has dreamed of traveling the world and being able to be out and proud. A strict Russian upbringing has taught him to be fearful of coming out, but when he is approached by Cam he longs for more and the more time he spends with him the more he dreams of a different life.
I enjoyed this story, the fact that these two young men not only came from very different upbringings, but were worlds apart in their life experience made this book both interesting and enjoyable. Where I got frustrated was with their lack of communication especially for the secrets that Cam took so long to share. I did appreciate that when Alexi got an opportunity to live out his dream, Cameron encouraged him to do it and didn’t hold him back. I also loved that Cam and his parents gave Alexi the encouragement and support he needed to be honest about who he is with his family despite the consequences he might face. Both of these young men faced challenges, giving this book a realistic feel and while I was happy for them to be together to me the relationship seemed rushed (and I’m not talking the sex, they are young, impulsive and let’s face it horny that happens), however I was pleased with the ending.
Sometimes it is the life lessons and the journey that make being together special and Ms. Stevens gave readers a very realistic view of these things in Under The Boardwalk.
I was hesitant to try this one, to be honest, because I just had an inkling that it wouldn't be to my tastes, but since I've never tried a Felice Stevens book before and I ADORE Nick J. Russo I figured I'd give it a go.
I'm not quite sure what to say about this one.
It isn't my taste, if I'm being perfect honest. I need a slow-burn romance and I prefer all sex to be after the 40-50% mark, and this book basically skirts instalove. I wouldn't pick it again, but there was something charming about it in a low-angst, ultra sweet way.
The narration was good from Nick J. Russo but sometimes his accent was a little inconsistent. All in all, this was a pleasant read for lovers of a high sex:plot ratio and cute summer romances.

I'm not sure just what it was which stopped this one from being a higher rating but I just didn't really get into it.
It's beautifully written, as I'd expect from Felice, but I just wasn't bothered about either of the MCs which is totally on me and not on the quality of the story.
The setting is glorious, I could see, hear and smell the boardwalk, the sea, the heat of the beach, but I never connected to either Alexi or Cam.
#ARC received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.
This was actually just a really sweet, low angst (surprisingly) romance.
Sure, there's a bit of emotion that's kicked up by Alexi coming out to his family once he falls for Cam, but I was really happy that Felice Stevens didn't drown out the romance aspect of this.
Because this is such a short story, the narration was less than 4 hours, it needed to focus on the romance and it did. This is helped by both Cam and Alexi providing their POV. Sure, it's insta-love and everything happens very quickly, but I felt like Nick J. Russo sold it and made their romance believable for me.
Nick's got great timing and pacing, and uses distinctive character voices. I loved his Russian accents!
My only note about the accents is there were a few times when Russo dropped Alexi's accent and I was unclear if it was Alexi or Cam speaking for a moment, but Russo'd pick up the accent again pretty quickly. However, the consistency of the character voices was otherwise good.
All in all, this was just a really nice, fun listen.
This book was ok. I just never felt really involved with either of the two main characters. Alexi seemed awfully shallow and I really didn’t like him much until he stood up to his dad. I actually thought Dimitri was a more interesting character, he at least grew in his thinking. Felice Stevens is an excellent writer, but this one was pretty forgettable.
One of the main reasons I like this author’s books is the characters. I know I can count on them to carry the story, and make me feel invested in their lives and relationships. This does happen again here in Under the Boardwalk, with both Alexi and Cam quickly getting under my skin as I read.
The fact that they’ve both noticed each other from afar—and not just in the present time frame—comes across as sweet with a bit of longing, and when the first move is finally made it was one of those *happy sigh* moments. The fact that this is novella length though means that things progress pretty quickly between them. They each have issues to deal with…Alexi not having come out to his family, and Cam with his voice issues…so for me I think a longer story would have given more time to fully explore these while allowing for more relationship development.
Story length aside, there’s still plenty to get readers sweating with Cam and Alexi’s hot intimate scenes. And there’s enough drama provided by their individual issues to cause a good amount of angst. The different backgrounds from which Cam and Alexi come from also give the story some great contrast.
For a good, relatively quick read with a nice dose of heat to add to the sweet, Under the Boardwalk will definitely fit the bill. For me, it’s falling somewhere between a 3.5 and 4 star rating, mostly because I felt like it could use a bit more length to really give Cam and Alexi’s relationship time to grow more. This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.
Some stories are worth melting for. This was what happened to me soon as I finished this 'custard' story of Cam and Alexi. I loved how easily they're fit into each other's life after decided that finally two summers is enough. Enough of wanting, enough of just seeing each other from afar, enough the cowardice to say hello. It's a story of a 'not a love at first sight', love at first sight. Soon as they talked, they're clicked, like a soulmates click. And I couldn't be more happier that Alexi somehow, has his dreams comes true. I think he's having the same dream as me, to be able to see the world. And Alexi proved that could happen. This is ended with a HFN and a promise of HEA. Recommended!
Felice Stevens really knows how to draw you in as a reader. Your characters are so well thought through and the way you incorporate the best of New York with all your landmark identification is very nostalgic. Being from New York, it is always so fun for when a place is mentioned that you can totally identify with where it is and the atmosphere there. I just love how that also becomes a character in your books.
If you are looking for a very sweet romance story about the power of love then this is the book for you. If you also like a book where the background provides added character then this is the book for you. If you want to get lost in how two people can meet and fall in love unexpectedly then this is the book for you.
Alexi is very closed off in that he has yet to reveal to his very Russian immigrant family that he is gay. He is very fearful of them rejecting him because of his sexual orientation, and therefore has decided to keep this part of himself hidden from them. He dreams of travelling the world where he can be free to live how he wants but instead is stuck in Brooklyn working at his family's custard stand.
Cam is a well-travelled singer but he seems to find all his enjoyment while spending his summer days singing on the boardwalk. Cam is fully supported by his parents but in his profession and in his sexuality. While singing on the boardwalk Cam has seen Alexi from a distance and has now decided he would like to get to know him better. This is where the love story really begins. The emotional issues that will need to be resolved. The stolen kisses, hugs and laughs that will be shared. Cam has given Alexi the courage that he needs in order to disclose his sexuality to his family. He has provided Alexi with the support and love that he will always be there for him and no matter what they both can be happy. Alexi has provided Cam with just the right amount of naivety that makes falling in love so sweet. For Cam who is just trying to go through life Alexi has provided the spark back to him that makes him want to LIVE life again; not just survive. These two served as a great reminder that it's just so much fun to fall in love, especially during the summer in New York, with Coney Island as your backdrop.
THANKS FOR GIVING US SUCH A WONDERFUL LOVE STORY....JOB WELL DONE..
Another sweet, heart-warming romance by Felice Stevens. Being a novella, it was amazing how such a short story still felt so complete. Partly because the connection was quick but not insta love since they had been admiring each other for awhile. Something about a beach setting makes it so romantic. Walks at night on the beach holding hands and kissing under the boardwalk are my kryptonite. Sigh. Cam and Alexi are such a sweet couple. I built a connection despite the short time I spent with them. They loved so hard that it pulled me right into the story. My only complaint, if anything, is I wanted more time with them.
The Landmarks Series is shaping up to be one of the best on the market. The series, co-written by Kade Boehme and Felice Stevens, centers around well known New York City landmarks, and the lives and loves of the men that frequent these places. Each book is a stand-alone. You don’t need to read each one in order to get the full scope of the story, and they can be read in any order.
Felice populates all of her books with real people, and “Under the Boardwalk” is no exception.
Alexi is the son of Russian immigrants, stuck in old-world values. Somewhat naïve, he hasn’t come out to his family for fear that those old-world values would force his family to reject him. Stuck working at his families custard stand on The Boardwalk, he has dreamed of leaving New York and traveling the world, but the crushing sense of responsibility to his family has kept him where he is.
Cam is just the opposite. A musician by training, he spends his summer days singing on The Boardwalk. BHis parents not only know of his sexuality, but are fully supportive of him. Giving up the fast-paced lifestyle of the city, his parents have instead moved to a remote cabin. Cam himself is a world traveler. Don’t be fooled, however. Cam has had his share of setbacks, including a medical scare.
Alexi and Cam are truly sweet together, each recognizing in the other qualities that, when put together, have the potential to create a truly dynamic couple. The differences the two create the perfect environment for not only conflict but also mutual support. Alexi’s wanderlust and Cam’s medical condition can either serve to bring the couple closer together, or tear them apart.
This book had me cry. A good cry. We have to absolute sweetheart of men trying to deal with what is holding them back and find strength in the other to go forward. They fall in love at the worst time for both and the best time as well. How can it be both?
Well for Cam it helps him come to the realization that he wants more and wants his voice. that he can be the rock for someone and find what is missing in his life now that being a Opera singer is gone. He sees his chance with Alexi to be strong and understanding. To love with all that he is and let go as well so that Alexi can fly and experience life even if it hurts to do so.
Alexi gets a man who loves him unconditionally and is his support when he gains the strength to confront his family. To be who he is without hiding or fear of being rejected. He has someone who will be there for him no matter what. This is a strong kind man who dreams of more. And with Cam he sees more and than some. He sees his chance to have love and life and follow his dream of seeing more. he is a kind hearted character rooted in family and afraid he will lose them but with Cam he sees that he needs to be who he is and let the chips fall where they may.
Cam is a sweet, adorable easy going man. He is kind and understanding. His family is wonderful and very supportive of him and his choices. they are also there for Alexi. These two begin their summer in lust for one another and slowly get to know one another. As they do the lust becomes more and they become what the other needs to go on and find strength within. To stand up to their fears and to let love in. To become what the other needs and find their happiness. the story is so sweet and endearing. You cannot help but wish these two a happy ending and that everything works out for them because they are to adorable together and as individuals.
A really sweet endearing love story that captures you with its tale and kind loving characters.
Felice Stevens added another jewel to her already extensive repertoire of treasures. She has a way of writing that pulls me into her stories, time and time again. If I start one of her books there is no way I can put it down before I have finished it. This book is no exception. It isn’t a long story but leaves an impact nonetheless. She created two lovely characters in Alexi and Cam. Alexi is the sweet, shy guy who dreams of bigger things than his home town. Cam has been there, done that. Furthermore, he has some troubling issues on his plate. But he cares for Alexi, he gets him. Alexi. Sometimes he is a bit pushy but that is just what Alexi needs to give him the courage to follow his dream. They are flawed and not perfect and that makes them all the more human and real. They wormed their way into my heart. It is a sweet story, funny and hot, with a perfect romance. There is some angst, although, a bit less than some of her other books. However, there is more to it than that. In essence, Felice Stevens uses simple language to tell her story. At the same time, she shows a depth that has me thinking long after I have finished the book. It is the sincerity and profoundness of her words that settle into my soul. I keep highlighting phrases that touch me. Her stories are warming my heart, every time.
4.5 Stars! Under The Boardwalk by Felice Stevens is a quick, sweet and extremely endearing read! Alexi & Cam were just adorable. I wanted to climb in the book and squeeze them. This is a story about falling in love, following your dreams, growing up and taking control of your life. It's based in Coney Island, New York. Being a child from Brooklyn and spending my childhood there, Felice did a fabtastic job in transported me. She nailed the essence of this magical place. I could practically taste a Nathan's hot dog and smell the beach air. It's a perfect place to fall in love.
Under The Boardwalk is about two guys treading water in search of something more.... Alexi has dreams of traveling the world. Unfortunately he has never left Brooklyn. Going to school and working at his family's custard store on the boardwalk has put him in a rut. Being gay and having to hind also frustrates him. Coming from a traditional Russian family, he is afraid of their reaction. So his infatuation with the sexy boardwalk singer must be kept a secret...
Worldly Cam has travelled all over. He loves singing on the boardwalk, but his ultimate dream has been shattered leaving him seeking who is really is... His only distraction is the beautiful guy selling custard.
Both guys are drawn to one another. Watching and fantasizing about each other from afar. So, when they come together it's like a missing puzzle piece has been found. Although they fell in love rather quick, it felt believable. All their interactions brought a smile to my face. So damn sweet! Througout the book there was minimal angst just lots of feels. I enjoyed their journey. I actually wanted more of them and Coney Island!
In written format alone, Under the Boardwalk by Felice Stevens would be a beautiful love story. Add in the narration of Nick J. Russo, and the collaboration hits it out of the park. This is a coming of age story for two young men from vastly different backgrounds and set at Coney Island in New York.
Alexi Kharpov and his family left their Russian homeland in search of a better life, although his family is stuck in the “traditional” ways. Alexi is being raised in a loving and close knit family, however he lives in fear that when his family learns his deepest secret and desire his cherished family bond will be forever broken.
Cameron Maxwell has enjoyed singing from a very young age and made a very successful career of it. With his career cut short by illness, he spends his summers singing on the boardwalk for tips, and the rest of the year teaching music. In contrast to Alexi, Cam is out with the acceptance and support of his family.
Alexi and Cam spend one summer admiring each other from afar. It isn’t until the following summer that they come together. With their days and nights spent close, they quickly fall for each other and form an immediate and intense connection. But this was only supposed to be a summer fling...
As their summer comes to a close, each realizes their time together is short. Cam has seen the world and Alexi desires to discover what is beyond the confines of his Coney Island existence. With an offer that Alexi can't refuse, he struggles with conflicting desires between Cam and exploring the world. Cam also struggles with the recurrence of his health issues and what impact this will have on his connection to Alexi. Each man must make some tough choices.
Given low angst and two mature young men, Cam and Alexi navigate their desires and make realistic choices leading them down the path for a strong future. As secrets are revealed and hurdles overcome, their love blooms and each young man grows into the man who can create a strong, happy, and loving future.
Under the Boardwalk is aptly titled with that of the popular song by The Drifters. As Cam and Alexi steal kisses under the boardwalk and enjoy their “summer fling” a beautiful relationship forms. Add in the voice that Nick J. Russo gives these young men, and the story melts your heart in a good way.
This is a short novella with a coming of age theme story. Alexis is a Russian but living in New York all his life. He long for adventure and seeing the world. Most importantly a chance to leave his family and be who he is. Cam had it all until a diagnosis dash his dreams of being a professional singer, now he is back with his family and singing under the boardwalk during the summer.
From their first conversation, it was pretty sweet and low key. Things progress naturally and there are minor drama with Alexis being in the closet. Being such a short book, it bound to feel a bit insta-love. Although they didn't declare their undying love for each other, their commitment on making things work after knowing each other for one summer show things are moving very fast.
Overall, I like that the story deals with family issue, coming out and chasing your dreams.
My Review ~
Under the Boardwalk is the first in a new contemporary m/m romance series.
It's no secret I'm a huge fan of this author and her books. This novella is no different because she gives us her trademark style and another pair of fantastic main characters, and the start of a new series, too.
Alexi wants to explore the world but is tied to his family and their traditions, including helping in the family custard stand on the Boardwalk. The last two summers have been different because of the cute male singer who performs nearby. He'd love to be brave enough to talk to him but for now he admires and crushes on him from the safety of the custard stand. Cameron, the hottie singer, that Alexi admires has also noticed the adorable Alexi but hasn't approached him...yet. The two of them finally reach out to the other and the rest of their story is sweet, and sexy all rolled into one.
While Under The Boardwalk is technically a novella, it didn't feel like one because there is a lot of story and backstory packed into it's pages. Alexi and Cameron really have a showcase to tell their story and it did not leave me wanting, at all. Normally with novellas I tend to feel like the story doesn't give enough, but this one really did in all the right places. These two men are sexy, funny, sweet, and have a little bit of angst that gives their lives depth and a place to grow from as well.
I really don't want to give away the rest of the plot, so you'll have to be intrigued enough to pick this one up yourself. At it's heart it's an unexpected love story with elements that force both characters to re-evaluate themselves and what they want in and out of their lives. The story is well crafted, it draws you in and maybe lets you go when the book is over. This one is definitely in my re-read again pile because it is one of those kinds of stories that you want to keep revisiting, at least for me.
I can't say enough about this author and her books, I thoroughly enjoy every book she's written so far. I highly recommend picking this one up as an end of summer read to curl up with and enjoy. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Alexi comes from a very conservative Russian family and works at their frozen custard stand on Coney Island's boardwalk. He's gay, but he dreads his family finding out for fear of their reactions. He's been crushing on the handsome man that sings in front of his stand for the last two summers, but he doesn't think he stands a chance with him.
Cam has been eyeing the gorgeous blond guy at the ice-cream stand and when they finally start talking, sparks fly between them. They grow closer as the summer advances, however, Alexi is not out and Cameron is fighting his own issues with his health and anyway, this was only supposed to be a fling, wasn't it?
I'm going to be perfectly honest here. I wasn't too sure I was going to like this book at first. It was too sweet and instalove, but Cam and Alexi won me over. They were adorable and hot and their chemistry and love was palpable, this was no fling at all, even if they were kind of fooling themselves. It felt natural, despite how fast it happened and frankly, I couldn't get enough of how perfect they were for each other. Cam gave Alexi the strength to finally stand up for himself, to overcome his shyness and his fear and it was amazing to see him grow and be the man he wanted to be. And similarly, Alexi gave Cam the support he needed when he found out he needed surgery again.
I have to say I adored Alexi's mom and his Babushka, they were just amazing and I was in tears during a highly emotional scene with them. Cam's parents were awesome as well. I wasn't too sure about Dmitri, Alexi's cousin, or Alexi's father (who I really wanted to slap silly) but they came around in the end.
Overall, this was a fabulous read. It's short, but it packed quite the punch. I laughed, I cried, I awwww'd and melted with the fantastic characters and story that Felice Stevens wove together. Under the Boardwalk is definitely a must read for me!

This story is as sweet as the blurb makes it seem. In fact, it’s almost a bit too sweet. Definitely light and fluffy like the custard Alexy serves at his family’s Coney Island business to the handsome and talented boardwalk singer, Cam.
After two summers of checking each other out, Cam finally approaches Alexy to flirt. Before we know it, the two are under the boardwalk with their lunch, and then later with lips and hands as they explore what it means to be young, gay, and carefree on Coney Island in the summertime.
Of course, Alexy’s Russian parents are very traditional and it’s doubtful they’ll accept that he’s gay. Plus, he’s finally going to try to go to college, even though he didn’t have a chance right out of high school, and this is something else his father isn’t likely to approve of. And then there’s Cam, who hasn’t told Alexy that he’s a former opera singer who developed polyps on his vocal chords and was told not to sing again. Now, after two summers of singing on the boardwalk, Cam suspects the polyps are back.
At first, neither man confides his secret to the other, but when they do, it may be too late for them as a couple because Alexy’s college dreams will take him away from Coney Island, and Cam has to face his future without singing. Dramatic to the point of almost a soap opera, and yet sweet, this light romance on audiobook was very nicely performed by Nick J. Russo. Voices were distinctive. The accents not overdone, and even the female voices were believable.
If you want something short and sweet, this one is a great audiobook choice.

I usually love Felice’s work but this one felt too rushed to me…even the conversations between the main characters felt too rushed. There isn’t too much earth shattering here but it’s a decent enough story.
Alexi is closeted among his very close knit, traditional family. He’s also not very happy with being stuck working in the family business. He goes through quite a bit of personal growth and seems happy at the end of the book.
Cam has a secret of his own that took him a while to share with Alexi. I went back and forth with him. He was sweet at times but almost abrasive at other times. They both went back and forth with their emotions and decisions.
I love the interaction between Alexi and Cameron. They are sweet and tentative and then it just takes off. I love how Cameron's support helps Alexi be brave enough to be himself and chase a dream. And I really love Alexi's grandma. She is such a sweet and fiesty lady. Biggest problem with this book is I keep singing Under the Boardwalk in my head.
I listened to the audio version. It was well done and easy to listen too.
Received an ARC for an honest review for Feisty Bitches Book Blog.
My second Felice Stevens read and I enjoyed it as much as the first one. Loved both the main characters, Alexi and Cam and just the whole setting where this story takes place sounds amazing - I never knew that Brooklyn had a beach! It makes me want to go visit and step under the boardwalk!
Beautiful story, beautiful writing....... "When I met you, I was drowning. I had dreams, but I didn't know where I was going...............Until I met you"
Alexi works for his family at the custard shop on the boardwalk in the summer. He is in the closet and wishing for better things. He wants to experience life outside of NYC.
Cam works on the boardwalk as a singer. He has traveled and has had the experiences that Alexi is looking for.
These two have watched each other for yours until a leap of faith one day and they hit it off. Their friendship/relationship develops and is threatened when Alexi gets offered a chance of a lifetime.
Alexi realizes that he can't continue to hide who he really is and comes clean to his family. Well of course I'm not going to tell you what happens when he does
These two me were sweet from the get go and you will fall in love with them. Don't miss out on this book ....
The recap lets you know what to expect from this book so I'll bottom line it. This book left me happy sighing with a cheesy grin on my face. I loved it!
