Natural Antibiotics and Antivirals: 18 Infection-Fighting Herbs and Essential Oils

Rate this book
Explains how to use medicinal herbs and essential oils to fight infectious illness, strengthen the immune system, and combat antibiotic resistance

• Presents 18 of the most potent antibiotic and antiviral herbs and one beehive remedy, propolis, detailing how to use them and what illnesses each is best suited to treat

• Reveals how natural antibiotics have antiviral properties, lack side effects, and have no adverse effects on non-targeted bacteria, such as intestinal flora

• Also includes info on restoring gut health with probiotics, strengthening your immune system to become less receptive to infections, and supporting natural antibiotics with detox treatments

Nature offers us many natural antibiotics from the plant kingdom that work powerfully against germs while also being gentle on the body. Knowledge of these safe and natural antibiotics and antivirals is more crucial now than ever as modern antibiotics become less and less effective due to the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant germs. Natural antibiotics even offer an opportunity to reverse antibiotic resistance by reducing the use of pharmaceutical antibiotics to only the most critical cases.

In this practical guide, Christopher Vasey presents 18 of the most potent antibiotic and antiviral herbs from around the world and one beehive remedy, propolis. He details how to use them effectively as mother tinctures and essential oils as well as what illnesses each is best suited to treat. Drawing on the latest research, he explains how microbes can’t build resistance against these natural substances due to the many molecules in their make-up and their large spectrum of action in the body, which makes them effective against viruses as well. He reveals that, unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics and antivirals whose list of side effects grows in proportion to their strength, natural antibiotics generally lack any malignant side effects and have no adverse effects on non-targeted bacteria, such as intestinal flora. The author also includes information on probiotics to restore gut health after the use of pharmaceutical antibiotics, ways to strengthen your immune system and become less receptive to infections, and guidance on detox treatments to support the natural antibiotics as they work. He also provides an index of more than 50 common ailments and diseases with the most effective medicinal plants and essential oils to use in each case.

Offering a way to break free from the threat of antibiotic-resistant germs and improve the body’s immune system and internal terrain, this guide gives each of us the ability to fight infections naturally.

Trying to keep as healthy as possible is important to me so when I came across this title it was a perfect match for me. I love alternative therapies and know that some of these can really help, I am always happy to try out different remedies whether they are traditional or homeopathic/complementary.

"Natural Antibiotics and Antivirals" informs and explains how to use medicinal herbs and essential oils to fight infectious illness, strengthen the immune system, and combat antibiotic resistance. Presented are 18 of the most potent antibiotic and antiviral herbs and one beehive remedy, propolis, with detail as to how to use them and what illnesses each of them can be used to treat. There is an added advantage that these remedies lack side effects and have no adverse effects on non-targeted bacteria (e.g. intestinal flora).

One of the parts I was most interested in was the information on restoring gut health via use of probiotics. Having suffered from terrible stomach issues for many years I was intrigued to know more about this and whether it could help me. Use of probiotics can strengthen your immune system so that it is less receptive to infections. After reading this and having heard about the miracles probiotics can achieve I have purchased some in pill form courtesy of Holland & Barrett.

This is really a book that should be on every bookshelf, we are far too reliant on antibiotic pills prescribed by the doctor even when in most cases they aren't needed. This is how we have developed a resistance to them. In most cases, natural antibiotics and antivirals would suffice and this book guides you on how to use them in that way. It is grounded in science and is full of excellent information that is acessible and will make sense to a layperson with no prior knowledge of the subject.

All in all, this is a fantastic resource that will be a vital part of my library once I purchase a copy for my bookshelf!

Many thanks to Healing Arts Press for an ARC. I was not required to post a review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

This is much more than a simple book on essential oils! The author includes useful information on the role of microbes, the micro-human relationship, the immune system, interferon, organelles, enzymes and details on bacteria and virus structures. The author gives you a sense of being able to more fully comprehend how and why the essential oils mentioned in his book work. I must admit, I have been skeptical of some essential oil claims in the past but this book takes a more scientific approach, allaying doubts I may have had. You get 50 fantastic recipes to treat common ailments. I read an e-version of this book, but plan to buy a hard copy for my bookshelf.

Many beginners or layperson-oriented essential oils and herbal remedy books have a lot of flowery language and brightly colored photographs of plants. What they don't often have, and what really sets this book apart, is a focus on SCIENCE. In fact, this book (at least the digital galley I received) didn't have any pictures at all, and very little flowery language, but it was packed to the gills with evidence-based information on the science of germs, disease and the immune system, and on how and why these plant-based medicines work. A fantastic resource that I will definitely turn to over time.

Very impressed with this book about using herbs and other natural ingredients for antibiotics and antivirals. The use of essential oils, tinctures, oral and topical treatments for so many health problems are discussed. I did appreciate the warnings in the book about avoiding certain areas and to dilute before using many of these things. A lot of good commonsense advice that I can't wait to use. Definitely 5 stars. Very well researched. I received this book from Net Galley for an honest review and no compensation otherwise.

"Natural Antibiotics and Antivirals" talked about the history of natural and pharmaceutical antibiotics, what germs are and how your immune system fights them, and 18 natural antibiotics and how to use them to treat 50 common illnesses.

The author did a good job of explaining complex biological processes (the immune system, etc.) at a level that I think most adults can understand. Some scientific terms were used, though. The author explained how the essential oils, mother tinctures, etc., work to support your body, stop the germs, and not harm the beneficial bacteria. He also talked about detoxing and things you can do to support your beneficial microbiome. Overall, I felt that this was an informative and useful guide.

He talked about the essential oils of basil, English lavender, eucalyptus, niaouli, oregano, palmrosa, ravintsara, savory, tea tree, and thyme. He talked about the mother tinctures of bearberry, burdock, common barberry, mouse-ear hawkweed, and purple coneflower. Also, grapefruit seed extract, lapacho, and bee propolis.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley.

This is a well-written book on some of the top antibiotic and antiviral herbs and essential oils we can use at home. This book is great for readers new to herbs and essential oils, and those who've already been using them. It's easy to follow, and he starts with a solid introduction about how pathogens operate and how our body is designed to respond to each. He goes dives into the science with relevant details about the constituents in each herb and essential oil but doesn't go so deep that readers will be bored.

This will be a nice reference to use when illness hits, and readers will bookmark plenty of specific treatment options and dosages. I appreciated the simplicity of the format and dosage recommendations, as well as the safety precautions (when applicable). The chapters on maintaining balance in the body, especially supporting the detoxifying organs and improving gut health, are important additions for general wellness.

I received an e-copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

While I think my eyes glazed over a bit during the beginning chapters on germs, infectious diseases, the immune system, and pharmaceutical antibiotics, this book is full of really useful information. It isn’t just another book promising that if you buy and use a bunch of oils you’ll never need to see a doctor again. Vasey provides tactics to keep your system healthy in order to prevent infection, focuses only on 18 herbs and essential oils and how they calm the symptoms of infection, and does recommend seeking professional medical advice on certain matters. This would be a good book to keep on hand for future reference.

I would rather own this book to use as reference than read it straight through. It's not a fun book to sit down and read; however, I did at least skim it pretty much in its entirety. Seems well-researched and informative, with interesting content to anyone interested in alternative or herbal therapies.

I learned a lot from this book. I’m not against medication but with so many viruses and germs becoming resistant to meds it can be really helpful to use alternative means to boost your immunity. I have experience with aromatherapy so I’m looking forward to trying some of the remedies but I don’t suggest others try anything without consulting a doctor.

Not sure how to rate this cause it's all very science-y and I couldn't understand most of what this book was saying, but if you know stuff about science then it would be interesting to see the actual medical aspects rather than a metaphysical take.

My expectations for this book were different than what was presented. I had expected a book that would give me basic information on natural antibiotics and how to make them to keep them around the home. The first five chapters consist of a history that reads like a microbiology science class.

Chapter six is the chapter that I thought the entire book would focus on. It's the chapter that contains the recipes using essential oils and how to make tinctures. Chapter seven tells what remedy works best for what issues and gives a mini instructional guide for oral and topical applications.
The remaining books goes back into the "science" class.

This was different read than I had expected. For someone that is looking for the remedies and just a basic understanding, you may find yourself bored with the history of germs and microbes.

I can say this book is definitely for the person studying natural alternatives or has a keen history. For the everyday person, I couldn't recommend this book.

It felt very long and drawn out with too much o the book focused on the history of it...this can be a tedious read.

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley and the publishers for an honest review.
This book was very helpful and information filled book that had me enjoying reading about some herbs and essential oils I have used on myself and my family members for many years. I also found information on may herbs and essential oils I had not heard of which surprised me as I have many books on this subject. The science and the explanations on the various Viruses, Germs and Parasites as well as the great amount of helpful and very useful infection fighting ways to utilise the herbs and essential oils to help soothe and sometime relieve the symptoms was fascinating. I just wish some illustrations to pictures of the various herbs had been included. This is a book that I would recommend to all who are thinking of natural ways to cure.

Doctors are prescribing antibiotics much more frequently, which is leading to people becoming immune to them. This book offers guidance on how to utilize natural antibiotics or antivirals in place of the prescriptions that are typically used. I had no idea that there were so many different alternatives to antibiotics and will definitely be using this guide next time I need one.
