A fresh perspective can often serve to illustrate timeless truths and generate renewed interest in others. In Father Justin Lopina's first book, he offers a series of eleven reflections on faith and spirituality based on the experiences of his first two years of priesthood. A book for all Catholics, or those curious about Catholics and the lives of their priests.
I was "introduced" to Father Lopina via Heart of the Nation's Sunday telecasts for which he occasionally celebrates Mass. He comes off on TV as friendly, joyful, honest, and down-to-earth, and he takes a very conversational approach when he delivers his homilies. He appears to dance to the beat of a different drummer, and thus when I discovered this book, I was eager to read it. It didn't disappoint. Father Lopina discusses important moral questions and uses his personal experiences to make sensible analogies. He is anything but "preachy". He takes his vows seriously and knows when to be serious, but he has an infectious joie-de-vivre that's very special. It comes across well in every chapter, and the book is a joy to read. My only constructive criticism is that the book was not proofread carefully, and there are times when this reader had to pause for a moment and say, "Huh?". If it's ever re-issued, I would hope that proofreading would be revisited.
