He’s a former warrior turned soldier of fortune hired to escort a Highland shrew to an Englishman. She’s the niece of a Highland laird betrothed to English royalty against her will. She’s hardheaded, fierce, and independent. He’s hellbent on delivering her to her destination. Until he discovers her destination is a version of hell he wouldn’t wish on his worst enemy, and certainly not on this spirited Highland lass.
CLEAN ROMANCE! I TOTALLY DIDNT MIND THAT AT ALL AND NORMALLY I WOULD STEER CLEAR OF SEXLESS STORIES. THIS ONE WON MY HEART.
OUR HERO and his clansmen were tasked to escort a half Scottish lass to her betrothed in England. For some reason, she gets on his nerves and the usually lax Brice is often arguing with the vixen instead. While the story bordered on frustration and hurt, it surprisingly worked because most of the time miscommunication between characters are the main reason a story fails. Somehow the author manages to bridge that issue even while the two were fighting. In fact, it made it all the more sweeter and heart wrenching when they finally admitted their love. Throughout the story, Brice changes from unsympathetic to questioning their decision to send a woman off to marriage with a stranger like a piece of meat. He's a good man he is although his temper is short only where Alana is concerned.
OUR HEROINE has spunk and despite her sharp tongue comments, I didn't find her irritating at all. In fact I was sympathetic throughout and knew that she deserved better. I even rooted for someone to eventually champion her! Alana is an oddity during her time for most women wouldn't have had the guts to attempt so many escapes! I mean where will she go if the men weren't there or she hadn't fallen in love with one of them?! But I liked that she stuck to what she believed in and didn't hide behind sweet words but gave the brutal, honest truth.
OVERALL I was thinking to myself that I would have loved this even without any hanky panky and was surprised that i was right in my assumption at the HEA. The emotional ride in this was enough to compensate for the lack of physical passion because the love was there, right in your face the whole time.
In A Warrior’s Soul by Aileene Adams we get another installment in the Highland Hearbeats series. It is the eighth book in this series set in the highlands. In it we meet two noteworthy main characters, Alana Stewart and Brice MacDougal. Alana is the daughter of Douglas Stewart, a highland laird. Since the death of his wife, Douglas has distanced himself from his daughter. He sees her an asset to be used to further his holdings and thus arranges for her to marry a member of the English nobility. He makes these arrangements without consulting his daughter. He hires four soldiers of fortune to transport Alana to betrothed. The band of four consists of two brothers, Brice and Fergus, and two lifelong friends, Roderic and Quinn. Since there is no war this band of brothers turn to being soldiers of fortune to survive. As such their quest is to ensure that each assignment is carried through successfully. The bulk of this tale deals with the trials and tribulations that this group of travelers’ encounters. One such trial is Brice’s unexpected physical attraction to Alana. We watch as both Alana and Brice struggle with their feelings. Ms. Adams use of witty banter pulls the readers into wanting to know more about each of them.
Ms. Adams’ penned a true character-driven plot line. As the story enfolds, through dialog and descriptive language we are introduced to our characters. From the onset the readers’ heart goes out to all the characters. Her use of dialog is wonderful, especially the banter between the characters. We witness the struggles that Alana and Brice are faced with. Scenes are well written and transport the readers into each one. Reading the scene wherein Alana faces the wild boar and how the band of brothers come to her rescue is riveting. I appreciate that Ms. Adams chose to make this a clean romance. If you want to find out what happens to Alana and to Brice then I recommend you get your hands on a copy of this book.
Every time I read the following book in this series, it's like caching up with beloved family members:) Love how the author always has some of the previous books' characters in each story. Really enjoyed Brice and Alana's story, what a feisty little minx she is! lol I've got the next 2 books of this series on pre-order so very much looking forward to those too!
I Really like historic romance stories with strong courageous women. Strong men that then fall in love and wish to protect them becomes a wonderful tale. Evil relatives and their cohorts then add the excitement necessary to create a book hard to put aside. This novel fits the bill, thank you, Jack.
+: a nice historical romance, brimming with sexual tension; good characterization; good sense of setting and descriptions used throughout
-: no hot and heavy romance scenes, even once we get to the end; the readers were dragged on a long ride to not get a satisfactory ending, but that could be because I've never read the rest of the series/other books by Adams
Once again, I love the characters in this series. The story is simple and flows at a fast pace. My only issue is the ending leaves me with wanting more and questions. Maybe they will be answered in the next book.
This had a bit of action and with a couple complications the heroine and hero find they truly understand and love each other. So their sweet romance blossoms into happy ever after
This was a great story of an arranged marriage and the cruelty of some men. The earl thought he was God's gift to woman but there are men who think women should be cherished!
Fairly good character development of the two main characters. Storyline has good adventures, danger, flashbacks to the previous book in this series and romance.
Can the four highlander get Alana to England without her escaping? Alana's mean spirited, hammer whielding father has arranged a marriage with an English Lord in order to stoke his coffers. A good and clean story.
Love these stories! Each one takes you deeper into the families and the clans of the Highlands. Each story makes you fall in love a bit deeper! Great read!!
