A long, wordy story based on a British ballad, but set in the American South, in the early years of the 20th century. Excellent retelling and illustrations.

A beautiful ballad story. Short and sweet and sad, of course. Despite the death of Polly at the hands of her soon to be husband, it brings them even closer and following the trial of Jimmer, you just know they going to be together. I bought this book for my grandchildren, but, I think it's a little too graphic for anyone under the age of twelve. Maybe I'll just keep it.
