An introduction to Mindfulness specifically aimed at women and alleviating common stresses and behaviours that women in particular face. Filled with not just information and theory, but also with case studies and testimonials, exercises and meditations, and also tracking the progress of second author Claire Irvin as she attempts to follow the coursework laid out by main author Vidyamala Burch.
This book can be read on its own in whatever amount of sittings it takes you, or it can be used as a multi-week course guide. I did the former, as I have a very large stack of books to read at the moment and had already begun a mindfulness based course, so I simply worked these exercises and meditations in as well.
A wonderful read and very useful guide. There were times I was bored of the testimonials and times I found them useful. Reading Claire's progress could be quite frustrating because she experienced so many setbacks and defaulted to giving up a fair amount of the time. But at the same time, I suppose there's something reassuring about knowing it's hard for other people if you are finding it hard yourself.
The book comes with a CD of guided meditation tracks, so you can listen to Vidyamala reading aloud the guides written in the book.
If there was one thing that was disappointing, it was that the Resources appendix points people to Vidyamala's website, which doesn't actually have many of the resources that would have been useful. (Give me a digital printout of the sheet, rather than expecting me to photocopy and blow up the small version in the book. When you've specifically mentioned that one of your meditations is cut in half to fit the 10 minute limit, why not have the other half available for the full experience?)
But overall a good book, and I've found several of the exercises and meditations to be very useful and effective.
