Devotionals are a fickle thing for me. The overwhelming majority of them that I've tried to read over the years are too shallow for my liking and unfortunately, Stand Strong is no different. The brevity of the devotionals are just barely enough to give the reader an inkling of a spiritual truth. Some are so brief that they lack any real substance or coherence. January 19th's is the straw that broke the camel's back for me as it lacked any meaningful connection to the verse in Exodus that began the devotional.
I'm also not sure what makes these devotions stand out as "for men"; some are so similar to others I've read that reach a general audience.
I think what would have made these devotionals better is if they were longer and went more deep than just barely skimming the surface.
With that, I'm putting this one away and continuing with Charles Spurgeon's "Morning and Evening".
"Stand Strong" is a good devotional for men. The devotionals are short and meaningful. Each devotional makes the reader think about their life and their relationship with the Lord. It is well written and good for busy people. The topics chosen are meaningful.A men's devotional will draw men to read about spiritual things and make them desire to be closer to the Lord. I think it is important to reach men with a men's devotional. I appreciate the publisher for allowing me to read and review this devotional.
Years ago, before the Bible App and Daily Grace and She Reads Truth, I started every morning with a book called Jesus Calling. Every day, there was one or two paragraphs of devotional, followed by a bible verse or two that related. It was a great way to get my heart set for the day and remind me of what was important.
This little book is a gem much like that one, geared specifically for men. Each day, there's a short bible verse then a corresponding story. The tales are easy to read and very relatable to every day life. There's focus on positive thinking, helping others, living with purpose, and staying in the word.
I think this is a great Father's Day gift, stocking stuffer, or grad gift to that man in your life. I have 3 sons of varying ages and it would be appropriate for any of them. I hope they consider making a digital version because it would be wonderful as an app or bible study on a phone.
Thank you to Net Galley for providing me an ARC to preview in exchange for an honest review.
I just received this book! I was reading the devotion for May 2nd and the author came right out and said one of my favorite movie is Bourne Identity. The whole purpose of a daily devotion is to take your eyes and heart from the world and put it on God. As Christians we aught not be watching movies like this. Quite frankly, we probably shouldn't be watching TV now a days! Satan goes about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. May Christians, or so called Christians are not even on Satan's radar because they have already been rendered in-effective. They go to church once a week, sing new age rock music thinking they are worshiping the Lord, then they go home and live like they see fit. Men, how can we be warriors for the faith when we are not even living a biblical world view? God calls us to be separate from the people of this world. We are pilgrims, sojourners! Satan is wise and he is great at deceiving man. I emplore you all to consider how you do your devotions to the Lord. Dont forget, Malachi 3:6 For I am the Lord, I change not! 2 Corinthians 6:17 Context
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
Written by the same people who create the quarterly Our Daily Bread devotionals, the 365 devotions in this book follow the same format. Each dated devotional consists of a suggested scripture passage to be read followed by a key scripture.
Following this is a brief devotional along with the author’s name. Each page ends with some blank lines appropriate for the reader to make personal comments or prayer requests. The devotions are contributed by nineteen different authors - some are familiar to this reader, others were not.
I found the devotions to be practical - including clear to-do’s of one sort or another. Though the book is addressed to men and many of the stories used have a masculine perspective, the lessons are generic enough that couples could easily use the lessons for a year of devotions together.
I do have two concerns. First, all the authors are male. My other concern was the lack of an index - there is no scripture index, topic index, or author index. The book does include a list of the 19 contributing authors, but the reader has no way of determining which entries were written by which author except by visually scanning all 365 entries. An electronic edition would allow the reader to search the book since each individual entry includes the author’s name. These two flaws warrant only 3-½ stars. ______________ This review is based on a free electronic copy provided by the publisher for the purpose of creating this review. The opinions expressed are my own.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Net Galley. What follows is an honest review.
It is hard to review a book like this. Devotionals like this are to be read one a day. Advanced copies for review have a time limit on them. The ebook stops working or you have a limited time to review. (Or both). So my first problem was reading several weeks at a time. There is a pattern most devotional books follow. This one it was: Bible verses, story about real life, moral. When done right all flows. When done wrong, you scratch your head and go 'huh'. The publisher of this book is the book publisher for Our Daily Bread magazine. If you have read it these devotionals are just like them and my guess came from them. They do have a habit of hitting the mark most times, we all hit a clunker now and then.
Reading several weeks at a time got old fast. These are things you have to take time and ponder. That is not a fault of the book, more of the review process. The book I feel, when used in daily fashion would be good to read one and meditate one.
In fact I feel these would be good for anyone. That is why I knocked off a star. These are not men's devotionals. I have said they were most likely culled from Our Daily Bread and for that reason they would have to appeal to all. That is not to say that these devotionals do not have a male focus, just that they are generic enough to, for my taste, to be gender neutral.
If you are in need for a good devotional book, one that takes you through every day of the year this would be a book to pick up.
Stand Strong: 365 Devotions for Men by Men by Our Daily Bread Ministries is a steady, practical devotional built for men carrying real weight work, family, leadership, doubt, responsibility, and fatigue. This isn’t a book that talks at men; it walks beside them, offering daily moments of clarity rooted in Scripture and lived experience.
Each devotion is brief by design, meant to fit into the rhythm of ordinary life. In just a few minutes, the reader is grounded in a biblical truth, paired with insight drawn from men who understand pressure, failure, perseverance, and faith tested outside of ideal conditions. The writing is direct and accessible, never preachy, never abstract.
What makes this devotional work so well is its focus on durable faith. The emphasis isn’t on emotional highs, but on building a foundation that holds when life doesn’t slow down. Strength here is quiet, consistent, and anchored in trust the kind that shows up in decision-making, relationships, and endurance over time.
Readers who value daily Scripture engagement, practical faith application, and encouragement shaped by real-life experience will find this book especially useful. It’s a companion for the long haul, not a quick fix.
My husband and I were recently privileged to receive a copy of this devotional from @netgalley. We are hit and miss, but most nights, we get to read one. Stand Strong is very good!
It’s one of those short inspirational devotionals that takes less than 2 minutes to read, but as my husband said, “its good. I think about what we read the next day.” And with quotes like this, who wouldn’t think about them again the next day?
“Remember the steady pace of Cliff Young and the apostle Paul as you run your race. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, so “let us run with endurance the race God has set before us”
“Jesus asks the same of us today. He asks us to follow Him, love Him, obey Him, and tell others about Him. Like the apostles, we don’t know what our commitment to Jesus might bring.”
I enjoyed the brief daily devotionals shared by various contributors to the Our Daily Bread devotional booklets. As the sub-title indicates, these are written by men for men. Each one gives the reader something to think about as the day begins. Typically, after a verse of Scripture, they start with the highlights of an interesting story, either from the life of the writer or maybe a news story. Then the writer will share a brief thought that ties it all together in a meaningful to help the reader think about some aspect of his life. I recommend it.
Thank you for the opportunity to review your devotion book. As a woman, I would have to say it was good. It has a purpose in the sense it get people reading their bible daily with a verse but i think it should give the person the verse and allow them to search the verses for themselves as appose to them already being readily available for them to read in the book.
Devotionals are a great gift for a lot of people. I had a lot of excitement about this one because "Our Daily Bread Ministries" is an expert about devotionals. Even when it is not my favorite genera, I enjoyed going through this pages. I recommend you to get it and try to cherish all the wisdom you can get.
This is a devotional designed for men that provides a short Scripture passage, followed by an applying devotion --- enough for each day of the year. The contributors to this devotional are all seasoned pastors, seminary teachers, and writers for Our Daily Bread. Men will find this devotional full of bite-sized wisdom a help to start their days in line with Jesus.
This is a good mens devotional book. Read one a day for a year and you finish the book. I read one a weekday for a year and a half and finished the book. The devotions are thought provoking and any number of times they hit the spot as needed for the day. Several I turned into lessons for my group at church. Worthwhile!
Alright, this was marketed as a devotional for men and I agree that it is. It referenced and related scripture on topics that would interest men, e.g., sports, history, and hobbies. The devotionals are short and interesting. So, if you are looking for an easy to read devotional for 2024, then this could be it.
This is a solid little year-long devotional book. It is not the most deep, which is why it may not be for me. Nonetheless, you get a nice thought ever morning, but it’s only one small page so usually a small story and thought attached. Not bad, but nothing to write home about I suppose
This is the first time I have ever completed a full year of scripture reading. Has forced me to find a quiet time with God to start the day, very relevant and thoughtful.
Each day a timely anecdote. Then authors draw an appropriate analogy to his we might follow these examples in our daily walk. I will save these devotions and revisit. Good Stuff !
I so am enjoying the daily readings! It has played a very important part of my life as I read some every day. I think more people need to read more of things like this and try to apply it to their lives, think it would make their lives better,it would make them better human beings, and apply it to dealing with people they have in their lives! It sure would make us all get along with each other better and give examples to our children on how to live life to the fullest and show as Jesus said, treat me as I would you!!! Think we get in such a rush in our lives we forget how to talk and great and love each other anymore!!!
My husband absolutely loves this devotional. It’s a great everyday quick read to help get your focus where it needs to be. It’s by no means an in depth bible study but it’s a fantastic devotional!
I’m not a man. True. But through many days and nights of reading devotions with my husband, I can judge well what styles of devotional readings tickle his fancy—and which ones don’t. And just like us women, sometimes men must wade through a few uninteresting books to find one that speaks to them.
Stand Strong definitely has a masculine slant. From ants to pine cones, male friendship to obedience, the lessons in the devotional focus on examples with which men can connect. General Eisenhower, The Bourne Identity movie, one-handed football player Kris Silbaugh, a young soldier being harpooned with vaccinations, and a wife who makes pot roast are just a few of the characters used to illustrate Scripture in a way that is engaging to most men.
Another plus was the mix of daily topics. Where I enjoy devotions that run for days or even weeks with a focused theme, my husband would much prefer variety, not addressing the same issue even two days in a row. Stand Strong’s daily topics are fresh and unique each day. They are a short read with practical examples that put God’s Word into perspective for today’s world and the challenges men face.
I give this FIVE book stars. It is well written and Scripture based. I think it would make a nice gift for the man in your life.
