The Inbetween Days

Rate this book
From the author of Something Like Happy comes an uplifting and emotionally compelling novel about a woman in a coma fighting for a second chance at life, love and happiness.

Rosie Cooke is “in between.” In between consciousness and oblivion. Life and death. And though some say that when you’re near death your entire life flashes before your eyes, Rosie can’t remember anything at all—not even how she ended up in a coma. At least not at first.

Then something strange starts to happen. Rosie finds herself revisiting scattered moments from her past: a beach vacation, a play rehearsal, the day her brother was born. But why these memories? And what do they mean?

As each piece of the puzzle comes into focus, Rosie struggles to face the picture of her life that forms. But with every look backward comes a glimpse of what might be: A relationship with her sister. The opportunity to pursue her passion. A second chance at love. And Rosie just might discover that she has much to live for.

With bighearted emotion and comic sensibility, The Inbetween Days is a life-affirming novel about the little choices that determine our fate and our ever-enduring hope for the future.

An uplifting life affirming story about the little things in life!

WOW! This book was an unexpected gem of a story! A book about how it is the little things in life that can make the biggest impact... how sometimes your small actions can influence not only your own life but that of others... how little acts of kindness can spiral into big successes... just think about it the next time you give that stranger a smile it might alter the course of their life and for the better... kind words to a stranger might lead to a great invention... telling your BFF that her new haircut is fabulous might lead to her meeting the man of her dreams that night, you just gave her that much more confidence.... just saying it’s those small things that can impact a persons day, of course it could happen adversely as well, but we’re staying positive here! Don’t worry this is not a philosophy book, it is a well-crafted story that will give you a really positive vibe about life and make you want to run out and be thoughtful about your interactions with others....

Eva Woods has written an engaging and beautiful story that sucked me in from page 1... Rosie is hit by a bus and put in a coma... she has no recollection of the accident, the events leading up to the accident, she has no memory at all... we the reader are privy to her inner thoughts as she begins to piece her past together... this part of the book jumps around and can be a little jarring at times, Rosie does not regain her memory in a linear fashion... she also has a bit of a spiritual guide to help her puzzle The pieces of her life back together... this part of the book slightly reminded me of “A Christmas Carol,” could also be that I was reading it at Christmas time.... rosie’s sister Daisy also plays a very important part in this book... not only is she right by Rosie side willing her to come back to her, but she also has her own life issues to deal with... I thought how the sisters stories were woven together was seamless and perfect...

Both Rosie and Daisy were tremendously likable characters, I truly adored both of them! The way the story unfolded made for a compelling and addictive read... Eva Woods has crafted an exquisite thought-provoking story...

A story that will tug atboth your heart and your head, full of beautiful imagery and wonderful characters! Recommend!

Yesterday I got so old,
I felt like I could die,
Yesterday I got so old,
It made me want to cry
Go on, go on,
Just walk away
Go on, go on,
Your choice is made
Go on, go on,
And disappear
Go on, go on,
Away from here
And I know I was wrong,
When I said it was true,
That it couldn't be me,
And be her in between,
Without you,
Without you
Yesterday I got so scared,
I shivered like a child,
Yesterday away from you,
It froze me deep inside,
Come back, come back,
Don't walk away,
Come back, come back,
Come back today,
Come back, come back,
Why can't…

The Inbetween Days by Eva Woods was beautiful, brilliant, and uplifting!

How can I describe this book? It truly makes you appreciate being alive and what life has to offer each and everyone of us.

Eva Wood writes an emotional story that hits close to your heart with words that flow ever so beautifully across these pages. I was intrigued and pulled in by page one. The art to her words that create such beautiful imagery as you read each and every page.

The storyline is absolutely heart-breaking. My goodness did I feel for Rosie. Being hit by a bus and diving deep into a coma. But, having to make decisions due to being in the "gray area" to see if she can come alive again.

Eva has such a way with the complexity of her characters in this novel. She explores her character's past and present, unwinds each and every secret, and the complexities of how humans think and tick.
I could not get enough of this beautiful and emotional storyline!

This came at the right time in my life. It made me thankful for my life a little bit more and I hugged my fiance a little bit tighter <3.

Huge thank you to Harlequin Graydon and Netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

4.5 beautiful stars!

Haven’t we all wondered, “what if?” at some point in our lives? What if I had said something different, what if I had done something else, what would my life be like today? Would it be the same or would these decisions (both big and small) have altered the course of my life? At it’s core The Inbetween Days explores these types of questions, but it’s so much more than that, it goes much deeper.

I read Something Like Happy well over a year ago and it was a book that really resonated with me, the kind that stays with you. As much as I was looking forward to reading this one, I did have a nagging thought thinking that maybe this one wouldn’t effect me in such a profound way. I was wrong. Do you have any authors that seem to just speak to your soul? Their writing touches you on a level that is not the norm and leaves a mark on your heart? I know it sounds incredibly cheesy but Woods is that author for me. She inspires me and makes me evaluate my own life and always makes me want to do better, to be better and to just live my life to the absolute fullest.

Rosie is in a coma right when you’re first introduced to her and I remember thinking, hmm wonder how much I’ll hear from her POV, but it’s a lot, you’re basically privy to her inner monologue as she struggles to remember even the most basic things about her life. The structure of this was fantastic, when Rosie starts to remember things you’re hurtled straight into the memory with her and things are all over the place, she may first remember something from two years ago and then when she was five, but it’s quickly apparent that these memories are all relevant in some manner. You also hear from her sister, Daisy and she’s just as important to the story as Rosie is. I just adored both of them, I felt an instant bond with the two of them and was anxious to see what would happen in their lives.

I could probably ramble about this one forever but I’ll spare you, I’m going to leave you with a portion of my review for Something Like Happy that is how I feel about this one as well. This one made me grateful and humbled me, which seems like part of some overarching themes in Woods books.

If I’m ever feeling down or throwing myself a pity party I’ll pick this book up again, it’s exactly what I need to read to quit feeling sorry for myself and embrace the life that I was given. It really gave me a new, fresh perspective and inspired me to celebrate the little things and to be truly grateful for all that I have. Happiness is a choice and though it may not always be an easy choice, it’s definitely a state of mind.

The Inbetween Days in three words: Inspiring, Evocative and Humbling.

This is my 2nd book by Eva Woods. Her book Something like Happy I gave it 5 stars. So I was excited to started on this one. This book was great! I could not put it down! Another 5 star book!!

I’ve read a couple of books similar to this where someone is in a coma and she/he hears everything people are saying around her or him but the doctors don’t know if she/he can or not. It always has me thinking if this really does happen. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me this book for my honest review. Due out for publication in January 2019.

What a beautifully written, inspiring book. I laughed and cried throughout, it’s made me think about my own life and put things into prospective and the message behind it and some of the beautiful words will stay with me for a long time. I wouldn’t have picked this book up it it wasn’t for my book club so I’m forever grateful to the member who suggested it as her pick. It’s by far my favourite read of the year so far and I’d recommend it to anyone who loves to read, especially to anyone going through a hard time or struggling to work out why certain things are happening and why.

The story follows Rosie who is in a coma. Rosie hadn’t had the easiest life and wasn’t necessarily happy with how things had panned out . The book shows how Rosie and her family try to work out if the accident was suicide or not and also shows Rosie re living many of her memories some good and some bad and trying to piece everything together. The memories include something that everyone can relate to in some way or another, it shows love and hope and how everything in life connects. Things happen for a reason and there are consequences of everything we do. Even though it may not seem like it good can come from bad. Everyone will end up on the right path sooner or later. The first paragraph of this wonderful book grabbed my attention and the last paragraph will stay with me for a long time. A wonderful wonderful book please read it.

It's hard to imagine what it would be like to be in a coma for most of us. Then add on if you're in one due to being hit by a bus and everyone, including your family are left wondering if it was an accident or deliberately.

This is exactly the emotional and heart breaking story the author so brilliantly writes of main character, Rosie. Though the book goes back and forth between her point of view, it also tells that of her younger sister Daisy. Who is an important character who is also dealing with her own tough life decisions and all while fearing the worst for Rosie as she is in a coma.

I enjoyed the,"time travel" elements if you will of the story. However, if there is one thing the author does well it is bringing so much to life through the descriptive way she tells the story. The family drama and dynamics among the characters are also very realistic and relatable.

Without giving too much away, because I do recommend it be read. The overall plot of the story line is one about how our decisions do affect others and how they can have a rippling affect in ways we do not even realize. That also reminds you to embrace the life you have been given!

I enjoyed this book on the whole, it had a good, if sad, storyline, the characters weren’t annoying and it was very readable. The ending was very predictable but then I don’t think it would have worked the same if the ending had the other outcome it could have done!

Not bad, not great. Somewhere inbetween.

In 2017 I chose Eva Woods precious work, SOMETHING LIKE HAPPY, as one of my picks for best contemporary books of the year. Naturally, I was eager to give her latest a try.

Woods has a unique voice that is startlingly uplifting, relatable, and humorous in the face of unfortunate circumstances. She has a way of making you laugh while you cry. That’s a gift.

That same shining voice graced the pages of THE INBETWEEN DAYS, but the story itself lacked some of her other talents.

This book has one major problem in that it’s very structure forces it to be repetitive. We alternate chapters between Daisy and coma-induced Rosie. Rosie’s chapters are always the same structure from start to finish. She makes a joke, sees a guide to take her to a memory, and then visits the memory. Over and over again. After a while, even the jokes aren’t that funny anymore because the pacing and tone are just too identical to the previous chapter. Perhaps if the book had been structured differently it could have avoided this. As it stands though, it gets pretty tiresome.

There is a secondary element to this book that is almost like a mystery in composition. Daisy is trying to piece together the moments leading up to her sister’s accident and figure out why it happened. This was a great idea in theory since if it was done well it would serve to propel the story forward. However, the mystery aspect could have been much stronger.

Lastly, I was disappointed that the characters in this book were not as engaging as her previous contemporary work. This really surprised me. In her previous work she can make you understand and empathize with a character in a matter of paragraphs. I’m not sure what was missing but the effect just wasn’t there.

THE BOTTOM LINE
All in all, this book was fine. I don’t necessarily recommend it, but it also wasn’t that bad either. It seemed to me that all the parts I needed more of were too short and all the parts I wanted less of were too long. If you’re reading Eva Woods I would strongly suggest her previous work, SOMETHING LIKE HAPPY instead.

I’m a sucker for sister stories, so I was excited to receive an ARC of The Inbetween Days. Rosie and Daisy are barely speaking to each other when Rosie is involved in a tragic bus accident, and ends up in a coma. Daisy becomes terrified that Rosie tried to take her own life, and mourns their strained relationship. Rosie, on the other hand, embarks on a Christmas Carolesque review of her life.

Both sisters are compelling characters, and I was definitely curious to see where Rosie’s memories took her. But their relationship never seemed strong enough to hang this novel on, even via flashbacks of their childhood. Rosie is a creative wild child, and Daisy the one trying to win her parents’ approval and do everything “right.” Sometimes opposites make for a dynamic friendship, but in this case, all I felt was wistfulness, mostly on Daisy’s part, that she hadn’t tried harder to know her sister.

There is a defining moment in Rosie’s life that I thought should have been more front and center. It seems so important to her entire family, but was treated with kid gloves throughout, almost as if the characters themselves might break from the heartbreaking memories.

I liked the message of second chances and redemption, and the idea that a life not seen as outwardly successful can change so many other people’s lives for the better.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an arc.

The Inbetween Days by author Eva Woods is BRILLIANT! It is one of the most thought-provoking books I have read this year. The character of Rosie is in a coma after being hit by a big red bus. Did she fall in front of the oncoming bus, or did she intentionally walk into the path? Those are a couple of the questions you will have as you read The Inbetween Days. Rosie can hear the words which are being spoken over her hospital bed, but she is not able to wake up or move. She hears the doctors tell her family that she has three days to wake up or give a sign that she has brain activity. Rosie is visited within her thoughts by people from her past as she relives some of the most painful memories of her life. It seems to Rosie that she has made so many bad choices and reacted in unloving ways to her family and friends, does she really want to wake up?
This story is about family, loss, heartache, and love. Love which is found and then later lost, or maybe just unappreciated, depending on who the family member happens to be at the time. There are so many very good and wise revelations in this book as we take a journey with Rosie while she scrambles to either wake up or give up.

TW: overdose, suspected suicide, cheating, parental separation, family breakdown, death of a child, mentions of domestic abuse, mentions of recreational drug use, vomiting

This was almost a four star read for me but ultimately it ended up being 3* because I felt the book was too long and at times repetitive. Given that these evens are meant to take place over 3 days it certainly felt longer.

I just got bored with it towards the end and ultimately it wasn't one for me.

This was an interesting twist on the near death/death scenario. Rather than simply meeting with the people that have touched the lead character's life, this one encounters the people touched by her even in ways that she hadn't been aware of.

I did enjoy the set up and how it was handled, but the book felt about 50 pages too long and I found I was just willing it to hurry up and come to a conclusion whichever way it went!

Page turner. I couldn't put it down. I was almost instantly hooked and fascinated by the main character, Rosie, and began rooting for her from the beginning. This is rather unusual, as It is often difficult for me to connect to contemporary fiction, because I write inspirational fiction myself. That said, this novel was a bit outside of the genre I am used to reading or writing, which normally is either inspirational or faith-based.

Of course, my personal spiritual beliefs about the afterlife differ from the secular tone of the book, but that in no way diminishes it as a powerful study of the internal lives of the main characters. This author is a talented wordsmith, and very insightful about the struggles most folks hide. Still, the page-turning, dramatic plot wasn't over-the-top, but was quite believable in an unpredictable sort-of-way, and even cathartic and inspiring in how the characters came to resolution through some of their problems.

I do not want to spoil the story, and that makes it challenging to write a review. Let it suffice to say, I have very little time to read novels, but I am very grateful I took the time to read this one. It was just what I needed to get through an icy snowstorm here in the Midwest.

I received an uncorrected proof of this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I was not required to write a positive review, but I truly have only positive things to say about this novel.

In a way, the book feels like a facebook meme to me. But! I don't mean this in a bad way. It's more that it centers around a concept that is important to so many people, that is shared again and again because it matters. But rather that being a little blip you can scroll past, briefly nodding in agreement, this novel gets into a but more depth. There's a light mystery with the amnesia and the did she or didn't she...? There's a little bit of a supernatual feel. There are many words devoted to family and the depths hidden beneath relationships. It's about depression and straining for hope. Anyway, it's a lovely novel that can speak to people in a darker place.

This book was such a joy and a real page turner.

The story follows two sisters, one who is in a coma and one who is sorting through the mess of her sister’s life and trying to figure out her last days before the accident.

Such a well written story, going back and forth through memories.

I really enjoyed this quirky book by the author of How to be Happy.
Rosie stepped out in front of a bus and was knocked into an alternative dimension (so to speak). But was it an accident or did she do it on purpose?
Why can’t she remember? And worse still why can’t anyone see that she is perfectly alright!
Of course you will have to read it to see the comings and goings of Rosie’s mind trying to remember the ins and outs of her chaotic life.

A really lovely uplifting & thought provoking (& heart rendering) read. I could pick holes here and there & I wasn’t initially a big fan of the ‘ghosts of Christmas past’ format but Eva Woods writes with such compassion she manages to tie up all the loose ends and secure a very positive, very real, ending. Definitely a book I didn’t want to put down & great story telling & characterisation.

Not my cup of tea

The book seemed to drag and a lot of the storyline was predictable. It felt like the moral of the story was too spoon fed throughout the book.

The Inbetween Days

QOTD: Do you believe in destiny? Please tell me why you do or you don't?

My Review:
Thank you @harlequinbooks and @goodreads for this advanced copy of The Inbetween Days by Eva Woods.

Rosie is in a coma after being hit by a double-decker in London. She is conscious but can't remember anything about her life prior to the accident. While in her hospital bed, she is visited by different people; some alive and some dead. They are trying to help her remember her life and come out of the coma. She has three days to figure out who she is, what she has done and why she is there. Will it be enough? Will she want to remember or will the memories be too much for her?

This has a bit of a Christmas Carol feel. The main character is visited by people from her past who transport her to specific events in her life. Some events are happy, but most are not. This is a fast and light read. This book will be available at your favourite bookstore on January 22nd, 2019.

The main character, Rosie, is in a coma after stepping in front of a double-decker British tour bus in London. Accident or suicide? As family members and friends gather around her hospital bed, this question is at the center of each person's grief, guilt and fear. This is a heartfelt story where all types of relatable relationships have gone wrong. Can each relationship be repaired?

Even though Rosie is in a coma for 99% of the book, she is an active character. She can hear the people in the room even though she cannot respond. Contemporary ghosts from her recent past visit her and help her sort out her thoughts and feelings. These ghosts add lightness and humor even as they touch on tougher subjects such as fidelity, bullying, and loss of a child.

Rosie has not always made the best choices, and it is also clear that those around her have not either. Her character shows wonderful growth as she learns to be true to herself. Readers will want her to get a second chance.

This novel of women's lives and relationships is pleasing to read because it is about daughters, sisters, and lovers. There are bits of humor and a nice story arc. The ghostly reflections (not at all eerie) go on too long though and the end is wrapped up a bit too neatly (though nicely) as the author makes the point that we each influence many others whether we realize it or not. A fine addition to women's fiction.

I rarely talk to my husband about books. He doesn't read and just doesn't get my love for books. This book was on my mind so much I had to tell him about it. I loved this book! Rosie was hit by a bus. Was it accident or did she mean to walk in front of it? As Rosie lays in a coma, people from her past visit her and relive some of her memories with her. Rosie's life has been hard. As she relives her memories, she needs to decide if she will wake up. I loved Rosie and her sister Daisy. The characters are so real with flaws and love. This is an amazing story of love, family, and second chances. I received an advanced readers copy from NetGalley and HARLEQUIN - Graydon House Books (U.S. & Canada). All opinions are my own.

OMG I HONESTLY LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!

It's quite heartbreaking to read every bits of Rosie's memories. Although her lives were terribly awful, and it do led to the assumption of her perhaps suicide moves, she actually had touch and change many lives. She felt sorry for everyone that she met and her attitude might be the reason why she think people hated her.

It was also exciting and bursted my curiousity to find where is Luke in every pages and what is the real deal between them.

I felt ease towards the ends of this book. Everyone found their own ways and it was all impacted by Rosie's touch in their lives.

I love the suspense element which created an endless thought; whether Rosie will stay alive or not.
