Hustling wolfsbane is the only way Dita Silvers knows how to survive.
As a werewolf from the slums, she longs to lift her family out of poverty, and getting involved with the prominent criminals in town seems worth the potential earnings.
But when Dita makes a snap decision that changes the course of things, and a handsome stranger comes to town asking questions, her resolve to accomplish her end goals will be put to the test.
With a witty sorceress as a best friend and partner in crime, and five siblings to look after, Dita has her hands full. Female werewolves do not command the respect male werewolves do, and they certainly don’t run a bootlegging operation at the height of prohibition.
From the author of The Wolf Wars Series, step into this vivid world of werewolves, vampires, and other supernatural creatures for an epic fantasy adventure.
H. D. Gordon is the author of several fantasy series with strong female leads.
She is the mother of two amazing daughters, and a lover of nature. She believes our actions have ripple effects, and in the interconnectedness of all things.
H. D. spends her time with family, eating desserts, and taking strolls through the forests of New Jersey.
I know this is the start of a trilogy and maybe that is all it should amount to; but, this book was awesome. Gordon honed her universe in the first two books of the Wolf Wars Series so that in this book there is more character development. The reader gets to feel the struggle Dita has not just being poor but raising her siblings, committing crimes to survive, creating her own family.
I really love the unique approach to societal inequalities the author takes. She uses supernatural beings. No "normal" humans. Her Wolf series deal with slavery, racism, socioeconomic inequalities, gender roles and responsibilities, etc...and All within a great story.
H.D. Gordon is a skilled storyteller and this book is worth reading, as are her other series.
This was an interesting book. The paranormal elements were completely unnecessary to the plot or any of the events that happen. Sure they transform into wolves, but only to move faster and it's barely referenced. The fae, the vampires, the shifters could all be regular humans and the book works just fine. Only once at the end of the book was magic used and that could be anything.
If you don't look at this as a paranormal book, it was a really good story set in a dystopian world. It should have come with a trigger warning about casually threatening sexual violence against kids under 15, which is what the villains did.
At least going in to the next book I will not expect the paranormal aspect as much let's see.
This book was so good. Prohibition. Werewolves. Vampires. Fae. Sorcerers. AKA seriously awesome. Dita is so freaking awesome and I love her family. I need more!
No cowering, whimpering stuttering female up in here. Dita Silvers is a bad bitch and thank God for that! I literally cheered out loud @ her "honesty" during her first encounter w/ Erek. Dita is a breath of fresh air in a sea of fictional MC's who are weak, feeble and waiting to be saved be their male hero. Bullshit. This girl saves her own damn self. Six very enthusiastic stars ******
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring by more than 0.50 of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
3.75*
Interesting world.
Found out after I read it, that it's in the same world as War Wolves, but its set 100s of years later so not reading those first didn't have any impact.
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
I was hooked from the first chapter of this book! The action is steady. Dita is a strong leading character and the supporting character well represented as well. The story really had some great subliminal messages going on that were subtle but still clear. The oppression of the masses, class warfare and the prolific use of illicit drugs to keep the poor complacent are all represented but the story is NOT preachy, but highly interesting with intelligent female characters that know the score is balanced away from them having power but still finding a way to save themselves. You should read this book! I'm a fan of this author now and can hardly wait to read the next book in this series.
Brilliant start to the series a slight jump in time to the previous series but if you had read the first series it shows the way wolf's are living rhinos great Again another strong female character leading the way in changing the confines of the society she was born into .written well with twists that are unexpected and fantastic in nature .
I like a good urban fantasy and I like my romance, so when the two can be combined, it makes for a great book. Dita is an exceptional heroine who has lived a very hard life and leads her family in all things. It was well written, the action was paced in a fluid manner and the world building done right.
4 stars Dita silvers is a hustler, just trying to feed her family and get them out of the slums. Action packed and captivating story with great world building. Very little romance, and a skimmed over sex scene that I thought had promise, but now I’m not so sure. Guess I’ll go with the flow and see what the next book in this series brings me.
Surprisingly well written, enticing story. Dark. Gritty. MC will do just about anything to save her younger brothers and sisters and pull them up from the desperate life they’re living, plus pull in a few strays along the way. She’s quite the badass, and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next.
I really wanted to give this more stars because I can relate so bad to f mc in this book, looking out for her brothers and sisters etc but it kind of read like a monologue, it’s a shame I was really looking forward to this from the blurb
Good book! I am glad I found this book. I believe I found this author because of an appearance at a con, several months ago, and I am very glad I finally got around to reading it. I will most certainly read the next book.
A very enjoyable fantasy of a supernatural world. A novel approach is taken with the main characters being part of the lower echelons but very strong females none the less.
Got this following a recommendation from the fans of urban fantasy page - that site is brilliant. I liked this, Dita and Kyra are good, strong characters. I like that this is rooted in family rather than the lone bad ass. Interested to see where this goes next.
This is a fantastic story! Set in an alternate history during a time of prohibition. A story of one woman's desire to make a better life for her siblings and friends! The lines she will cross to accomplish this goal and I he lines she won't cross to do it.
I love this! The main character is my kind of girl! The way this book is written is crazy and i feel like i cannot stop once I start. A brilliant supernatural trilogy that i will continue! Well done HD Gordon
Wow that was very emotionally tough. The whole scenario was just wow. A lot of action and a whole lot of kick assert. Left me feeling for the main Character!
I have not read much books about the prohibition era but this book somehow drew me into a world that is so foreign yet making it real to the senses.Wolves are apparently the apex predators in series and Dita the heroine despite being both tiny and female in a patriarchal society still manages to come up ahead in almost every dire situation with all guns blazing.
