An exciting new series from USA Today Bestselling author Charlene Hartnady
The Feral. Self-appointed rulers of all. Strong. Majestic. The most badass of all the species, and yet, the most vulnerable.
Their own females died many moons ago from the dreaded clutch sickness. Desperate and desolate, they watch as the other shifters take human females as mates. They are breeding successfully with them too.
Surely if the others can do it, they can too? They must if they are to survive. Human females are afraid of them, not interested in the least.
It is clear that The Feral must first learn the ways of the humans. The problem is that they have kept to themselves for too long. They don’t have the slightest clue where to start.
Several keythong are appointed to infiltrate human society. To learn what they can. These particular males are some of those who lost their mates. They are therefore destined to spend the rest of their days alone. Females no longer tempt them, which makes them perfect for this mission. As long as they stick to the plan and the job at hand, what can go wrong?
Talon arrives in the big city. It’s bright, loud and packed with humans. By scale and by feather, he has no idea where to start. The future of his species rests firmly on his shoulders. Clueless, he enlists the services of a Love Doctor who promises to teach him everything he needs to know about the opposite sex.
Vicky is desperate. Ever since her husband ran off with another woman, her business has been in the toilet. Who wants to take advice on love from someone who couldn’t keep her own husband happy? No one, that’s who. At least, no one in their right mind. On the verge of bankruptcy, a very gorgeous, nut-job of a guy walks through her door. He claims not to be human. Yeah right! Her first instinct is to kick him out. Then he hands her a suitcase full of money. Cash - and lots of it. How can she refuse to teach him everything she knows about women, about love? She can’t, that’s how.
The female laughs at him when he tells her who he is and why he is there. It takes some convincing to get her to agree to help him. She proves to be highly knowledgeable and skilled in the ways of human females. His mate has long since died and yet he is tied to her as if she were flesh and blood. His heart, his body, and his soul belong only to her. Why then does this tiny human doctor tempt him so? How is it that his hunger has reawakened? This has never happened before in the history of The Feral. It is wrong, and he must fight against it with every fiber of his being.
Contains hot, alpha males and therefore strong sexual themes/language

CUTE, FUN, & OH SO SEXY!!! Title: Hunger Awakened Series: The Feral Author: Charlene Hartnady Designation: Book 1 of Series, Full-Length Novel, Standalone, NO Cliffhanger #paranormalromance #shifters My Rating: Five Delightfully Entertaining Stars*****
Wow! I loved, loved, loved Hunger Awakened, the first release in a captivating new series from Charlene Hartnady. It’s no secret I’m a diehard Hartnady fan and have been for years. No one writes shifters or vampires quite like Hartnady. Don’t get me wrong; I also enjoy paranormal romance written by quite a few other very talented authors, but Hartnady’s sultry prose, unique storylines, imaginative worlds, sharp wit, snappy dialogue, and wacky humor just really revs my engine. But let’s not forget my favorite component of every Hartnady story – her large, diverse cast of endearing characters who always manage to ensnare my imagination and capture my heart. Don’t even get me started on her broody, intense, fearless, always charming but totally clueless heroes and her kindhearted, spunky, intelligent, and quite often sharp-tongued heroines who manage to bring the stoic men to their knees. As I said, I’m a huge Hartnady fan and if you haven’t read any of her books yet, you’ve missed a real treat! But as usual I digress, so let’s talk details.
Hunger Awakened is a riveting, fast-paced, well crafted, easy to follow, full length standalone novel, brimming with compelling drama, agonizing angst, outrageous humor, electric attraction, steamy passion, and dreamy romance with even a little danger and suspense thrown in for good measure. The narrative is beautifully written in the third person with clearly discernible his and her perspectives. The dialogue is smart, snappy, well executed, at times hilarious, and flows effortlessly. I adored the premise for this series but once again, it’s the characters who steal the show. I was immediately smitten with handsome, broody and very intense Feral shifter Talon. He may have been totally clueless about human women, but he was still a real chick magnet, or I should say a cat magnet. and even had the shirt to prove it along with several other t-shirts with very inappropriate(offensive) memes. Like I said, the guy was completely clueless. You’ll just have to read the book! Lol… I was captivated by the lovely, smart, and somewhat straight-laced Dr. Vicky Kilpatrick aka The Love Doctor, relationship therapist and recent divorcee. Oh my! Those two descriptors certainly don’t seem to belong in the same sentence but alas, it is what it is – a relationship therapist who no longer believes in love. These two characters could not have been more different but complemented each other brilliantly. Talon and Vicky may have been polar opposites but their sexual chemistry was so hot it sizzled, and the interaction between them was beyond entertaining. I snickered, snorted, chuckled, guffawed, fumed, and sniffled through the entire story but by the end, and in true Hartnady style, I was happy, satisfied, and well entertained. Did I like this book? No, I LOVED it! Would I recommend it? You bet, and I am but only for adult readers since it does contain some profanity and explicit(dreamy) sex. Hunger Awakened is part of a new Shifter Night Spin-off series, but each book is a standalone romance featuring one couple finding their happy ending. Will I read this author again? I think you already know the answer but just for clarification, ABSOLUTELY, just as soon as she releases her next book! And finally, was I entertained? Completely! I was glued to my seat, white-knuckling my ereader, completely mesmerized, my heart fluttering wildly in my chest as the pages flew as quickly as the time. And I loved every single second! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read.
After losing all their fertile females to the Clutch Sickness years ago, The Feral have very little hope for their future but know they must find a way to continue their species. They’ve witnessed the vampires and other shifter races mating successfully with humans and realize their only chance of survival is by also taking human mates. But the Feral are not like other shifters. They’ve isolated themselves for too long and know nothing about human society and culture, especially human females. They must learn how to adapt, blend in, and win the hearts of worthy females and to do this, they need help. King Leukos has given the task to four of his most trusted warriors. Talon, head warrior and confidante to the king, has been charged with overseeing the assignment and knows he cannot fail. The future of his species rests in his hands. He was chosen not only for his skill as a warrior, but also because of his disinterest in human females, or any females for that matter. The Feral mate for life, and it's impossible for him to be attracted to any female since his mate died 10 years ago. He could never have feelings for another. But you know what they say – never say never. Apparently, certain parts of his anatomy, as well as his heart, didn’t get the memo. Fate is a fickle mistress indeed, especially when the future of an entire race is at stake…. and when The Love Doctor becomes involved. After seeing a picture on a billboard advertising The Love Doctor, Talon hires Vicky to coach him in the ways of humans so he can then, in turn, teach his brethren how to win mates, but Talon soon learns he may not be quite as disinterested as he believed and that not all missions go according to plan. Sometimes, a broken heart, even one beyond all hope, can love again.
Thirty-five-year-old relationship therapist Dr. Vicky Kilpatrick may still be The Love Doctor but sadly, she no longer believes in love. After her husband and business partner broke her heart by cheating on her with a woman ten years her junior, Vicky's business, as well as her life, are now both circling the drain. She’s almost ready to throw in the towel and close her office for good when hope comes in the form of a mysterious new client, one that’s huge, handsome, apparently loaded, quite strange, and claims not to be human. What? Oh dear! What’s the Love Doctor to do? Take the money, of course, and teach him what he wants to know – how to attract women. Unfortunately for Vicky, the only female she wants him to attract is her. Oh no! But she no longer believes in love and he could never be attracted to someone like her, right? We’ll see!
Charlene is due to release book three in this series soon and I realised I’ve purchased this series but haven’t as of yet read any of them....🤦♀️ So in preparation I decided I’m going to quickly get them read!
This story focuses on the Feral shifters, who are essentially Griffin shifters (half lion, half eagle - I hope I got that right). Anyway the Feral decide to allow a few of their shifters a few weeks to immerse themselves in everything human - so that they have an idea of how to win over the females for mates as they no longer have many females left of their species. Vicky is the lucky lady to find herself helping Talon, but unfortunately he doesn’t want to do anything other than learn about human females and take this information back to his species😢
A good story which I enjoyed. I’m looking forward to the next one😁
When I first started reading this book I thought for sure it was going to be at least a four-star read. The positives about this book were that it was an HEA, no cliffhanger and had some alternating POV’s. I love the fact of the book was humorous and the two characters were easily relatable. Talon was very innocent at the beginning of the book and almost came across as awkward but he was absolutely hilarious. Vicky in the same respect was also hilarious!
The author’s attempt at humor stopped there with the use of her vocabulary. The use of the word “snatch” made me ill every time I read it! The author also repeatedly used the word “mount”, puke! The author needs to clean the language up!
I also felt that the overall story while cute lacked enough angst! There was very little up until 50% of the book. Also the sex scenes while hot were also limited to the last 70% of the book. The author needs build the angst and overall connection for this story yo be believable.
While their was a HEA I felt the overall ending was rushed and felt off to me. The “I love you”, was there but again it felt rushed. The author needs to work on letting the reader believe it and feel the love!
I loved the fact that Talon was a shifter but the author did not give us enough description of his home life and where he lived etc. The beginning of the story needs a little editing with regards to the backstory of the shifters.
If you want a quick shifter read with a bit of humor then by all means read this book but don’t expect that fluttery feeling from this author.

New series branched off her previous series. I think it is best to start with the very first book “Chosen by the Vampire Kings” and reading all the series before the one. It is a stand-alone and can be read by itself but I enjoy being part of this whole world that Charlene Hartnady has created. I think it adds depth to each book. One of my favorite series! Have reread them multiple times.
So we now know what had been hunting in the Night Shifter series and we get to meet the feral. They need woman since all of theirs have since died out from sickness while trying to give birth. However, it has been so long since these feral has had women and they have no idea how to deal with human women. So they are sent out into the world to find a way to find women to make babies with.
Talon finds Vicky to help him. These two have chemistry right from the start. I liked how these two interacted with each other. Hunger Awakened is an excellent start to this new storyline.
This wasn't my favorite Charlene book, but I didn't hate it either. It was in the middle for me. I love the Feral shifters, it's a pretty darn awesome concept. However, the character's chemistry was kind of bland to me in this book. The h is way attracted to Talon. Which is pretty much all she talks about. They constantly have communication riffs, that cause them to fight. To be honest, I really like Talon, but I am not the biggest fan of the h. She was okay. I'm interested in reading more about this shifters in the future.
Appreciated the premise of this story of shapeshifting aliens who make contact with Earth to learn about females with the intent of finding mates because their planet's procreating females have died off.
Humorous and light hearted, is a book for SciFi fans who look for comedic relief in their reading tastes of stories that feature bad ass aliens.
Warning: mature sexual content, mature themes, and language.
It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This is book one of four in The Feral series. (Set in the same world The Chosen Series)
Their own females died many moons ago from the dreaded clutch sickness. Desperate and desolate, they watch as the other shifters take human females as mates. So here is the first installment about the Feral, the mystical shifters discovered in the previous series Shifter Nights. Their story was so heartbreaking, a whole specie on the verge of extinction, plus the sad future reserved to the males having lost their mate, a lonely life until death catches them up. But this book was no sad story even if it had its tearing moments, the first part with Talon discovering city’s and humans’ way of life was rather hilarious between his view of fashion and their differences of vocabulary with Vicky. They were both two lovely sweet characters, damaged by their past love’s story, but each one with different opinion about it. Even if she swears about men, Vicky is far from insensible to the genuine man Talon is, he is her knight in shining armor, always there to rescue her even if there is no need, but also he is the one who will free her from her past mistakes, she will blossom under his watch. Talon should not be attracted by a woman, he is love life and future was buried with his mate, but around Vicky, he feels alive again, and guilty to of betraying his late mate. This book introduce us to a very different specie of shifters, with different laws and rules, but also with great nobility of the mind and a so sweet and naive side, I’m already eager to see what the author has in stock for us about the Feral. To sum up, it is story of letting the past go, fighting ourself to bring back the light in us, and how overcome misconceptions and miscommunications when there is an ocean like gap between persons from different worlds.
The first part is very gunners he learns about humans and dating. It seems to drag on and on though as he struggles with his attractions to Vicky. There is a lot of thinking that can sometimes make a story boring... But the fun parts like her learning to fight, her saving him from arrest several times, those are very fun... I did kinda wish he might have let her meet one of two of the others before things got sad... Lucky he decided to talk to his Feral Friend and king. Unfortunately the reunion doesn't go well and there is huge time skipping... I think it may have had a better feel if while he is there near her maybe his side of things maybe following her to her fighting club, it just seemed a rushed finish. I happened to have already read all the Water Dragon Series and the Earth dragons series so I know this book takes place before the last two books in the Water Dragon Series... It would have been more interesting to have theses books appear in order in Amazon kindle even if outside the series.Unfortunately I had already read Feral Dragon which has a bit of starting role for Talon and Vicky who is best friends with a The female Feral in that story. That might be why I kept getting bored with this story, it wasn't the normal exciting can't put it down experience I expect from Charlene Hartnady stories.
Four Ferals who have lost their mates due to a mysterious clutch disease leave their country in an effort to learn more about human women. It is their hope that the females will willingly join with unmated Ferals and be able to repopulate their numbers. Each male heads out to learn for themselves if this is possible. Talon meets up with Vicky who is a love psychologist and offers a large amount of money to teach him human ways, how to properly dress and how to approach women correctly. Ferals mate for life, and it's been ten years since his mate died along with her clutch of eggs from the dreaded disease. He still mourns her and feels guilty and humiliated when sexual urges begin to appear when he and Vicky are together. Vicky is recovering from a eight-year-old failed marriage and a cheating husband who is now married to another woman who is expecting a child of his. Although claiming to be through with all men, Vicky fights the attraction she begins to feel for Talon, and Talon hides any feelings he has for Vicky out of loyalty towards his fallen mate. My 3.5 rating enters because although it's a good plot and well written, it lags in the middle for several chapters while the couple go back and forth, on and on with feelings unrequited until nearly the end of the book.
A year ago Vicky was married and owned a business with her husband. Then she found out that she wasted eight years on a lying cheating scumbag. Now she doesn't believe in love. Which is bad because she is a relationship therapist who runs a business called "Love Doctor". Most of the clients left to join her ex because he was in a relationship with the woman he cheated with, whole she was alone. She has no more money and has to close up shop. That is when she meets Talon Talon knows nothing about human females. He is a Feral(gryphon-like) shifter. The women of the species has all died. He was previously mated, so he was sent to learn and bring back information. He sees an ad and goes to the "Love Doctor". Talon brings in a lot of money and asks Vicky to teach him. He told her he isn't looking for love and doesn't want a relationship, so she agrees. Things get complicated when he begins to have a physical reaction to her when that is supposed to be an impossibility. In their species, men don't react to anyone who is not their mate, even if she had been dead for years. Enjoyed the first book in this new series. There were humorous moments as well as heart wrenching ones.
I love this series. What a story! It’s humorous & passionate with snappy dialogue. This is Talon & Vicky’s story. He is a griffin shifter. She’s a recently divorced 35-year old couple counselor. Her ex’s name is Jeff. He’s an utter tool! I loved his comeuppance! That was epic! Talon belongs to a ever dwindling group of griffin shifters. They live in remote areas to protect their heritage & being found out by humans. Their women populace has been decimated by some kind of “clutch sickness” which loosely translates to both mother & child dying before the child is delivered. This illness has caused women to be very scarce, with only elder females beyond child bearing years left or the ones that choose to remain celibate & single. They’ve intentionally refused to mate as they’re terrified of contracting the clutch sickness. Talon & a few of the other shifters in his village have decided to mate with human women as we don’t have clutch sickness. Talon & Vicky meet on his first day in town & it all starts with a billboard sign. Him & his guys need training in human female psyche & the art of the pick up. Neither of them knew it was the beginning & the end for them both…Highly recommend!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Having read Unchained which featured the Feral I was excited to get the chance to read the first of their series. This book features Talon & Vicky following their story. The Feral are an endearing race as they have been so sheltered from humans & more especially females they have very little idea of the rules of day to day life. The men are hot & of griffin origins, a cross between lion & eagle so new to the shifter type books. I really enjoyed how Talon grew within the book in his understanding of humans & it was all well written with some great comedic lines. Vicky is a strong woman who has had more than her fair share of problems & she becomes stronger throughout the book. She reacts as you would expect to some of the scenarios involving Talon & his innocence in the way of the world but unwittingly falls for his naivety & charm not forgetting that hot hot hot body! It was an easy read due to the strength of the storyline & I am now looking forward to book two in the series which will feature two of the minor characters in this one.
Hunger Awakened: The Feral book 1 By Charlene Hartnady Kindle unlimited purchase The Feral was introduced in books 1-3 of the Shifter Night series. They are half-lion and half-eagle we would call them Griffins. Like ALL of the shifters, they are having trouble with fertility. They have what they call clutch sickness. It happens when a female dies during labor. And it's happened to every female. With just one female left of breading age, they too have come to the realization that the human females are their only hope of saving the Feral. I feel so bad for the shifters not being able to have the families that they want. Talon lost his mate to whatever is causing the clutch sickness. So when he was given the task to find out more about the humans he knew he had nothing to lose. Vicky is a qualified relationship therapist and just the person to help Talon to understand humans.
An intriguing new series - I love it! The Love Doctor - Vicky is 1/2 of the highly successful Love Doctor team. Once she divorces, however, she ends up with the high maintenance office, and he ends up with all the clients. Her life is a mess! Then she meets an oddly dressed and behaved man named Talon, who wants to learn how to attract human females. Vicky doesn’t really believe his story - maybe he’s delusional. I love all the situational humor and backchat between Talon and Vicky. The attraction grows continually between the two of them, but there’s SO much misunderstanding, that they’re constantly feeling rejected. And jealous. There is a lot happening in this involved story, you must read to see all the predicaments they get into, and how they get out. Lots of fun reading here, and a very happy ending! I’ll be on the lookout for the next in the series.
I have read all of Charlene's books, and I have loved all of them. This book is no exception. It was a little different than her other books, but it was still an amazing book. I have been interested in the feral since the last book, and I could not wait to read about them! Vicky and Talon made a good couple, but they were so different. I love that it was not an insta love story, and that they tried to fight it so hard. The feral, especially Talon, are hilarious, and I found myself laughing throughout the book. There were so many humorous moments throughout the book involving wardrobe choices. I was also screaming at Talon towards the end of the book. This book is a must read, and I cannot wait until the next one!! I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book.
The concept for this story was hilarious. The club outing Talon used as a teaching exercise for his males was hysterical, seriously funny stuff to read. Talon's growing attraction to Vicky was heartwarming and heartbreaking. It was easy to empathize with Vicky's confused emotions as her attraction for Talon continued to consume her and Talon continued to reject her affections. I really enjoyed every aspect of this book, characters, plot, setting, and surprises. I truly hope that Ms. Hartnady has several other Feral books in the works. This story is far from over and there are so many unresolved questions about this species and their problems hatching clutches of eggs. I look forward to more Feral books to read!!!
3.5 Stars. I enjoyed this book but I was expecting it to be a Dragon shifter book and it was a Griffin Shifter book. I was a little disappointed in that but otherwise it was a good book. There wasn’t really any romance until the very end of the book though, that was disappointing. The character building was good, I was very involved with them. There were some ramblings, in head talking, that I skipped over but mostly it was a book you want to keep reading because you just knew something was going to happen, again, not until the end of the book. At the end, it sort of jumped from being in one place to being in another then it just ended. That was very disappointing. I really wanted to read more after the couple finally got together.
Wow! So yummy! And a while new species, the Feral. Talon has been tasked with others to integrate himself into the human community and learn more about their females so that they may eventually find some of their own to mate and continue their species. He ends up with The Live Doctor after seeing a billboard advertising her business. Vikki has lost faith in love after her ex husband cheated on her and got another woman pregnant. She on the edge of losing everything when Talon walks in the door, lots of cash in hand, and asks for her help. Weeks go by and slowly but surely he learns but they also start to fall for one another. But Talon has a mate previously and they mate for life so he should never respond to another female again. Except he does. It’s interesting and a fun book!
There are some redeeming qualities for the story line but no. She is smart (but silly) and is wonderful about giving advice to a character about going to the police when she is beaten. Reasoning with this character to seek legal documentation in place to (maybe) press charges but to also to think about her unborn child (this character is pregnant) & what would have happened if the fetus was hurt. Kudos, ding, ding, ding - ring the bell for doing something right. In the next instance, her ex forces himself into her home & is irrational & tries to harm her. She is able to defend herself (somewhat) but is rescued by her “love” interest. She then does not follow through to press charges. I can’t stomach her reasoning soooo NO. Maybe I should have placed an even lower score!
A good start to this series the feral are unknown shifters to the human world and little known to the shifter world they keep themselves hidden and very private however their females have largely died from a terrible sickness that affects pregnant females. They have decided to try and get to know the human world with the hope of mating human women to keep their species alive. Talon is one of four sent to explore the human world where he enlists the help of Vicky a relationship therapist with whom he finds a major attraction. This book has plenty of humour as he tries to adapt to human rules and is a good romantic story.
I started reading this not liking Vicky because she was greedy, selfish, mercenary, and without compassion for Talon. She saw dollar signs looking at him. He came to her like a naive new born baby. She did improve but not enough for me. I wanted to like this more because I loved the Program by this author, but this doesn't hold a candle to that series because the characters made you love them with their in your face protective caring vulnerability and wormed their way into my heart. Talon was likeable but doesn't posses the strength of the Program characters. Good read just not comparable to the Program vamps!!!
Hunger Awakened is the first sexy book in The Feral series. Understanding humans is not as easy as they thought. The story revolves around shifters who meet the one and their lives are changed forever. But there are dramas and action along the way. That's when the fun begins.
While each book can be enjoyed as a standalone, it's best to read them in order to fully appreciate the rich paranormal elements and exciting themes they offer. The characters are fun and loving and dictated by their rules, but what they discover more than they ever imagined.
Strong, sexy alpha males in protective roles! Who doesn't love that
This is an amazing continuation of the world I fell in love with in Charlene Hartnady's "The Chosen series". Omg I love the writing and world building. The characters are all believable. My heart breaks for Talon as he makes this journey. I love the Feral period. The steam factors is plum off the charts in a great way. This is an Adult 18+ read, but those scenes are written very good. Classy & more romatic with meaning, not trashy at all in my book. I definitely recommend
