Kenisha Lewis #3

Getting Played

Rate this book
If there's one thing Kenisha Lewis has learned, it's that the people you think you know best often surprise you the most. And not always in a good way. It seems the revelations just keep coming. First, her grandmother and her dad are having money troubles, which means she'll probably have to stay in public school and get a part–time job. And then there's her boyfriend, Terrence, who has more secrets than she could have imagined. Kenisha can't believe Terrence is dumb enough to get mixed up in a string of robberies. Or that he'd cheat on her with his old girlfriend. Or could it be that she just doesn't want to admit the truth? Where Kenisha goes, drama follows, but she's getting stronger and smarter every day. And she doesn't plan on getting played again .

I felt it was written by a teenage about her point of view on things. It's annoying to me having words being misspelled. It's slow-going at the beginning, and a lot is left out throughout. It's not too bad, though.

Getting Played
Kenisha shockingly finds out that her transfer papers didn’t go through from Penn to Hazelhurst. She tries to go to the principal’s office to find out why, but the secretary is a light short of a Christmas tree. Then Kenneth has disappeared again from all the drama at his house with his girlfriend on his behind to marry her all the time. More drama follows. One of her teachers wants to talk about her attitude in class, but Kenisha brushes her off. Cassie comes up to her trying to apologize, but Kenisha isn’t really trying to hear nothing Cassie has to say. Cassie warns her that Darien thinks she took something of his. Lil T joins Kenisha and tells her Darien might be getting out soon. Then they run into Terrance whose acting short with Kenisha (possibly still over the Darien incident). Lil T mentions a girl named Gia but Kenisha notices there’s something he’s not saying (which is weird for him). Then Gia shows up and she and Terrance head off somewhere together. It’s then Kenisha gets to thinking there’s something there.

Jalissa and Diamond show up at Kenesha’s grandmother’s house and before they head to the dance studio, she shows them a secret passage through a closet. When she gets back it looks like the backdoor has been opened, The next day, Kenisha notices her Gram has a lot of hospital bills but she’s not saying why. Same ol song, when she gets to V.A, Courtney and her dad are arguing. She goes to her dad’s office Courtney’s brother (Cash) is there. Kenesha finds out that the reason her father didn’t pay her tuition is that his business isn’t doing too well and he’s broke. He says he might have to sell the house.

Kenisha hangs out with her girls at the mall. Cash tries to get her to check her dad on marrying his sister. Never gonna happen! D and J mention Lavone’s party coming up. Then they all see Chili and Lavone shopping together. Chilli tries to come over and throw it in Kenisha’s face, but she kills her with kindness and this causes her to go off on Lavone. J and D also tell Kenisha Jade and Tyreece have called it off, but she doesn’t believe it.

Ms. Grayson sh tells Kenisha about the congressional page program and tells her she thinks she should apply. Later, she stops at the Pizza Joint and Ursula tells her about a series of break-ins (in) the neighborhood. They discuss Darien getting out briefly and Kenesha finds out the cops came by after his arrest. He hide drugs and money in it. Like before she offers Kenesha a job there. This time she’s figures why not and she’s hired on the spot. Kenesha goes home and sees the bills again, but they’re addressed to her mother. Only her mother wasn’t in the hospital so she thinks maybe she was paying them for Gram. Terrance calls later to “talk” but doesn’t really talk. He confirms he and Gia were in a relationship and it was understood it ended. Then he rushes off to go to work (She doesn’t even know he had a job).

Later Gia tries to get in Kenisha’s face at work about getting Darien arrested (she use to date Terrance and Daren). Kenisha finds out she was “payback” for Terrance taking Gia from Darien. Gia says something about (and defends)Terrance getting messed up after everything went down.

It out Jade and Tyreece did break up. She and Kenesha get into an argument because she wants to know about the insurance money Jade thinks she wants it to go back to Hazelhurst. Later she finds out she wants it to pay off the bills. Kenesha gets a call from an unknown person that threatens her to give them their money. She also gets a call at school. She also finds out that Boyce (Troy’s friend) is responsible for the break-ins..

On the day of Lavon’s party, Kenneth is supposed to pick Kenisha up and bring her to VA but he says he can’t he’s in New York. . But he wants her to take her little brothers to the movies so they won’t be disappointed. Keneisha says maybe another time and plans to go to VA anyway and spend the night with D or J. Her dad calls back and says Cash can pick her up and Kenisha asks (when she finds out he’s watching her brothers how her Dad knows he can be trusted). Kenneth makes the mistake of saying he watched them while he and Court were spending alone time aka the time he wasn’t with her and her mom. And Kenisha gets off the phone with him QUICKLY. Cash shows up with her brothers but she’s still doesn’t budge, Cash thinks they should put all the other stuff aside and let Ken and Court’s mess be their mess. She gives them some desserts and sends all three on their way. .

After closing, Georgios gets an attempted robbery. Kenisha notices the tattoo of the man holding her. The man tries to take her with them when they hear the police arriving, but Kenesha jabs him with a cutter and they take off. J and D visit the next day and Kenesha admits to them that she might know who one of the men were but she can’t say Detectives visit later she keeps it factual but says nothing more. Some rumors start floating around that Kenisha, D, and J robbed the place and there ‘'s another one that Kenisha did it to get the money for Hazelhurst. Cassie and Kenisha get into it in class because basically, Cassie started the rumors Keneisha is called to the principal’s office. In the hall, she sees Lil T and finds out not only was he there, but he called the police and knows (just like her) the guy with the tat. Her father is in the office and goes off on her for him not knowing what went down and her getting a job. He tells her she’s moving back to his house. When they get home, they catch Courtney with a lawyer going through her dad’s computer. Kenneth kicks the man out but not Courtney. Kenisha tries to talk to him about the prank calls but he’s distracted and she decides to handle it on her own.

Kenesha gets a call from J and D that her gram's house has been broken into. Ken tells her to stay there. She sneaks out. Hers and Jade’s rooms are trashed. The detectives and T are there. Ursula’s house has been broken into too. The prank calls come up and the detective says Ursula got calls too. The detective asks what they have in common and it’s realized it’s Darien. Kenisha pulls T up to her room and tells him that she knows it was him at the pizza place, but he denies it. it. So she searches her room, but it’s in such disarray that she can’t tell what’s what.

Kenisha discovers while talking to Jade what was trying to be found (Darien’s trophy). Inside it is thousands of dollars. Jade and Kenisha go back and forth about what to do with the money. They know they have to turn it in. After Jade leaves someone tries to break in (two someones) and Kenisha is able to use the secret back stairs to get out. She thinks she hears a female’s voice (Ursula?). The guys are caught it’s Darien and someone else he knows. Kenisha left the trophy out in plain sight so now they have that and it’s over! Diamond calls and says Troy and his friends were the ones doing the break in’s but they weren’t behind the one at the pizza place and they’ve quit. Kenisha’s dad comes by and asks if she still wants to go to Hazelhurst and she says nah. She’ll stay at the Penn. Terrance and Kenisha are gonna be ok. The guy Lil T saw in the car was Brian (Jalissa’s brother). Terrence lost one of his scholarship and had to pick up three jobs to stay in school. He’s applied for another next semester and will keep at least one (that’s why he hasn’t been around). One was he was tutoring Gia, but tells Kenisha she’s not competition. Kenisha decides to go to school Monday and apply for the page job. It’s unknown if Jade and Ty get back. He shows up at the end for some reason. It’s also unknown why Gram has all these bills. Jade says she’ll look into it.

My Thoughts:
There were some really good discussion questions at the end of this. One asked if you ever found yourself in a situation like Kenesha and had to use your wits to get out of it. Two very bad instances came to mine. One was involving a situation with a family member when I was young that could have gone south had I not told that person I had to go to the bathroom and locked the door. Almost immediately another family member’s car pulled up and came home. They didn’t even realize what had almost happened and it would have messed me up for life. (I was probably only eight or nine). Then there was another time in college when someone was trying to force themselves on me and I remember saying NO but I guess they were deaf. So what I did was I used the position of the bed to my advantage and got as close to the edge as I could and then I just maneuvered myself to drop to the floor and from underneath them. In both cases, I realize that someone was really looking out for me.

There was another question about if you would have kept the money in the trophy and I REALLY want to say yes. The argument that it was “drug money” only might have bothered me *if* it had come from hurting people. But had it been just for *selling* alone. And this is why I say that. I have had an illness since I was about 12 years old so I KNOW what it’s like to have not enough money and too many things that need to be paid. I know what it’s like to believe and pray that things will improve and they just *don’t*. I know what it’s like to wake up some days and wonder why am I even *here* I know what it’s like to get *some* help -and be thankful for it- but it’s just not all enough.. I know what it feels like to feel like DAILY it’s just TOO MUCH-and that’s why I don’t believe that saying about not putting more on you than you can handle-. So in saying that I know what it’s like to do things “the right way” and not seeing the “payback”. That’s why I’d be tempted to sue that money. Its like this story I heard about years ago where a truck carrying all this money something happened to it and all the money went flying out in the street. Then they were asking people to turn the money back in? Unh hunh. Do you REALLY seriously think they did that? Unless it could be traced back to them. Even then. The ONLY reason that I wouldn’t have used that money is *exactly* what happened in this book. Darien coming back to break into my house until he found it. Darien could have not stopped there. He could have held Kenisha at gunpoint or beaten her or raped her. So in that regard, it wasn’t worth *that*, But just because that money was “bad’ doesn’t mean it couldn’t have went to something “good’ and I don’t just mean myself. It could have been donated to a charity. But I guess in the end she did the right thing. Lol I probably would have QUICKLY given that money to someone else because I don’t think I could have not taken some of it and went to the store or something thinking “I’ll only take a lil of it”

I think the only dumb things Keneshia was she didn’t IMMEDIATELY give that trophy back. Do I think she didn’t realize she had it? NO! Why? Because it says she *looked* at the trophy at one point in the book. She didn’t just *forget* she had that trophy. She was using that trophy as some kind of *victory* memorabilia in a rather *cocky* way. Like “Yeah, I beat your butt with your own damn trophy. WHAT?” The NEXT DAY she should have left that trophy on his front lawn. A lot of times in this book I dom’t think she ASKED for all the drama she got but in this case, she kinda did. The other time was when she didn’t IMMEDIATELY do something about the THREE times she knew something was off in Gram’s house and she just brushed it off. REALLY? Gram even tells her “It wasn’t me that just came in.” and you just do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING? That just left me a little dumbfounded. And no one even says anything about it like “Uh why didn’t you call the POLICE the other times?” And No I don’t think the girl was Ursula. Why would it be Ursula? More like it was probably Cassie.

There’s a question about why do you think Kenisha stayed at the Penn in the end. I have NO IDEA since it drove me CRAZY in the beginning of the book how many times she said IM OUTTA HERE just OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER. Why would you *WANT* to stay where the drama was instead of getting away from it? This part dumbfounded me too. Not that there wasn’t drama at Hazelhurst, but it just *seems* like the better choice. Maybe it was some weird motivational lesson like Kenisha thinking I don’t run away from drama. I can handle it! But it wasn’t a GOOD lesson. Okay Kenisha was dumb A LOT in this. I take it back. No I wanna stay at the BAD school that looks like a jail cell where any moment the crazy guy that tried to attack and rape me could get out and show up any minute to come back for vengeance is. That’s definitely where I wanna be (rolling). Which would have been the story of the next book and Kenisha whining why does this stuff always happen to me?

The last question was hard. It related to Jalissa being hit by Issac and what would you do if a friend were in a situation like that. I think it's really good that Jalissa eventually found the courage to walk away. It has to be the person. You can be the *best* friend and listen and offer advice (straight up or discretely) But if they don’t make the decision to walk away then there’s really not much you *can* do. Even if Kenisha would have known it had to be up to Jalissa.

Getting Played, might just seem like a book full of drama that could happen in life. After her ex-boyfriend, Darien was arrested for dealing drugs, her mother committed suicide, going to a public school, Kenisha describes life as a big potful of drama. Kenisha, a junior attending Penn Hall (a high school). As she gets blamed for things she never done, Kenisha finds the only way to get away from all the trouble, is to go to her dad's house in Virginia. However, that isn't her safe spot anymore, because trouble starts to arouse with a pregnant lady in the house. Courtney, a pregnant women that killed Kenisha's father and mother's relationship, starts to cause trouble around the house. Now Kenisha, has nowhere to go to be alone, besides the dance studio and with her best friends, Diamond and Jalisa.

As life throws more trouble to Kenisha, she learns that you can never avoid drama because it will chase after you, no matter how hard you try to avoid it. Kenisha avoided her ex-best friend, Chili, at her friend's party, but Chili started to yell and scream, disrupting the party. Kenisha also realizes that once your "image" or ego gets ruined, you will lose everything you once had. You will soon realize, who is the friend who will stick with you through the thick and thin problems, and who will abandon you when you need someone's comfort the most.

However, this book shows a life that is almost perfect, that gets ruined by a single arrest, and a single rumor that starts to build up over time. This book is an amazing book to help you feel better in life. You will realize that you're life might not be as complicated as you think it is.

Getting played is a book by Celeste O. Norfleet getting played is Book Two of the Kenisha series. Kenisha Lewis is a teenage girl who goes to school in Washington D.C. Because of her father divorcing her mother Kenisha moves with her grandmother and has to leave private school and attend public school. When Kenisha attends public school she begins to run into drama, with her ex boyfriend getting arrest for selling drugs she has to get the slack of being the one who told on him. With drama starting Kenisha wants to go back to private school but with Kenisha everything isn’t always so easy.

Having problems trying to attend her former high school she begins to run into more drama with a boy named Troy Carson and her former best friend. Kenisha tries to stay out of the drama that is trying to itself around her but she then finds out some very important information from a boy name lil’t, you see lil’t knows about all the latest gossip. After finding out the information about her ex boyfriend she finds herself having to worry about another problem that she thought she had got away from.

Kenisha thinks that going to her dads house would help her get away from the drama that she has at The Penn the public school she has to attend in Washington. Kenisha founds out the once home feeling she had at her house in Virginia isn’t home in Virginia. Kenisha has to deal with her dads girlfriend named Courtney but she finds happiness when she is around her little brothers but Kenisha always finds about surprises when her dad’s girlfriend brother comes to town Kenisha then has to deal with another person she isn’t really fond of.

Back in Washington there is a string of robberies that is happening in neighborhoods and Kenisha has a feeling she thinks she knows who are doing the robberies in the neighborhood. When she founds out who she thinks is the suspect of the robberies she founds herself deciding if she wants to tell the cops who it is that is doing the robberies.

I would recommend Getting Played to High School students because the author Celeste O. Norfleet has real life examples that high school students can connect to such has rumors, moving to a different area, leaving your friends, and having family issues. Many students around the world can relate to some of Kenisha's problems to themselves and see the way she handles her problems can help them handle their problems. Kids around the world sometimes make poor decisions that can affect them and someone else and after reading this book and the other books in this series students begin to have a better understanding and learn how to approach a situation

I would recommend the book because the book can show students how to handle situations the wrong and the right way. Getting Played can also show how the decisions you make can cause problems so you need to make sure you make the right decision. The book is a life learning example of how teens don’t really know as much as they think they do so it’s good to listen to your parents and make sure you hang around a good group of people and not just do things because it can end bad and Kenisha is a great example of why family is important.

What linking up with a creep does to ones life...

This is the first book I read in the Kenisha series (book 1 is Pushing Pause); I came across it and just started reading. I plan to go back to read this series from the beginning. It took me a chapter or two to get into this story because you are unmediated drawn smack, dab into a world of drama. Once I got the names and circumstances straight, I started to emphasize with the main character Kenisha and began to like her. An altercation with a creep forced her out of private school to a public school. It also caused Kenisha to have to live between DC and Virginia. Lil mama makes the best of her situation. However, that altercation snowballs into a bigger problem; not to mention the issues she faces with her family and her dream guy. This is a good story for young adults.

I thought this book was very interesting and had you think what would happen next. The book is about a girl named Kanisha, Kanisha is in high School and lives with her Grandmother. Her Grandmother and father had money issues and Kenisha's dad isn't able to pay for Kanisha school so she has to go to a private school leaving her best friends. kenisha feels like Terrence her boyfriend is cheating with his Ex Girlfriend. Kanisha has drama after drama it seems like Drama loves her. Her family is being played with and everyone has a different perspective of her everyday.
