The passage of time hasn't healed the ravages of the nukecaust, but where once there was only the Deathlands, new centers of power loom above the domain of the unwanted, the hellzones of the Outlands. Though the Outlanders distrust and hate the rulers of the fortified villes, even they wouldn't dare imagine the megalithic power guiding their destiny.
DEADLY APPARITION
Born and bred as an enforcer of the villes, Kane is now a renegade who has seen enough of the truth to make him scared for the future. Along with his fellow exiles from Cobaltville, he must unravel the net of lies that has ensnared humanity. Now, they must race to reverse an irresistable force unleashed by one man's quest for power.
In the Outlands, there is nothing left to lose except the future...
Other than the rushed ending this read held my attention from beginning to end. A step up from the last couple of reads where the progression of the over-all story-arc came to a slow crawl in many areas.
Each member of the team had their moments to shine or fail miserably. I actually love them all, which says a lot of why I will put up with a never-ending series like this.
Doomstar Relic sees the Cerberus rebels battling something we all can relate to these days- AI.
The books opens with an action packed sequence of Kane dodging swampies down in the bayou as the group is trying to throw off the Archon oppressors by staging camp sites throughout the Deathlands. This sequence sort of has the old Deathlands vibe to it as Kane races through the post-nuke swamps battling the muties.
From there the action moves to Minnesota and the northernmost barony of Ragnarville. The baron is murdered by a strange woman in a most unusual (and awesome) way. Magistrates are unable to stop her as she walks through walls and disappears.
After a crazy weather system whales on the ville, it becomes obvious someone has activated HAARP, and the doomstar relic- which Lakesh describes in an early chapter. Barch, the head Mag, wants control of the ville, and using mind control devices, weather control and AI, he manages to take over.
Kane and Grant are subjected to the mind control devices, another HAARP toy, but Barch doesn’t want mindless drones, and thinks the team will join them since their goas align. In his mind anyways, but for the team, it’s about stopping power mad maniacs from controlling humanity, and Barch isn’t much of an improvement over the Archons.
Another great read here, with Mr. Ellis exploring even more topics that are still discussed today - let’s face it HAARP is a nefarious group in the real world, and I wouldn’t put it past them to do some of the things discussed in this novel.
The characters relationships develop further, with some jealous feeling over Kane maybe about to spill into dangerous territory for Brigid. Moving on to Iceblood now !
Set in the same world as the Deathlands series. These books follow another set of adventures in the post holocaust world. Good men's adventures series. Recommended
