The Bravo 400's shift of the Corpus Christi Police Department is a tight-knit group of officers. As they work hard and play hard, they form indomitable friendships and often spend time outside of work with their families at shift get-togethers. Police culture is unlike any other, but these ten shift-mates - along with two supervisors - get it, because they live it.
Their family members get it, because they live it too.
Knowing the ever-present dangers in the line of duty is one thing. What happens when the ultimate sacrifice is made by one of the Bravo 400's shift members?
Final 42 is a powerful, raw, and heart-wrenching book about the lives of police officers when they experience a loss of one of their own. I highly recommend this book to everyone especially considering the current rise in hostility toward police officers. Christy Decker’s style is so quick and engaging that I finished the book in two days!
It is important to note that Christy Decker, author of two other books (Absolved and the Consequence), is a Navy veteran, resident of Texas where the story takes place, and a police officer’s wife. She obviously knows what she is writing about, and it definitely shows in this book.
The book opens at a police officer’s funeral, but we are not told who the officer is until the last chapters. Immediately we are taken to a time 6 months earlier, before the tragedy happened.
As you read the book, you will grow to love all the characters, each police officer and each person in their lives. They become real and so relatable. They are more than their uniforms, as we know deep down when we encounter police officers in our daily lives. In the book, Christy Decker makes it hard to imagine that one of the officers is going to die.
You don’t want it to happen, but you have to find out. And when you do, you finally see a glimpse of the sorrow that police families go through at the loss of one of their own. You respect them and their sacrifices a little more. Or hopefully, a lot more.
A police officer is killed in the line of duty. But author Christy Decker takes you to a place that few know or understand. Those who work in law enforcement form a bond. Not just with each other at work but with their families. Decker, the wife of a police officer, accurately portrays this blue family as you get to know one squad at the Corpus Christi Police Department. It’s realistic, warm and eventually heartbreaking as they lose one of their own. She brings the squad members to life as you get to know them on the job and at home with their families. It truly shows that police officers are no different, they are human. It’s a good read and a great story, especially if you want to understand more of what’s behind the badge.
Grab your tissue! This book will draw you in from the first chapter!
This novel resonates deep within me, as my father was a police office for 38 years. Each character in Final 42 is so well-developed that you ride the emotions of what it is like to not only be a police officer, but what it is like to be a family member of a police officer. Author Christy Decker writes with such raw and gritty emotion that you feel the pull and tug of what it is like to experience Bravo 400’s day-to-day lives as police officers. What sacrifices police officers make every day, and some do face the ultimate sacrifice of losing their lives.
Final 42 by Christy Decker takes readers into the homes of the men and women in law enforcement who put their lives on the line every day. Through these pages, readers get to know the members of the Bravo 400 shift, their stories, their families and their battles at home and on the job—and, as a result, we get a glimpse behind the badge to the heart of those who serve us and the ones who love and support them.
Two things are sure when you read this book: you'll have an even deeper appreciation for our police officers and their families and you'll need plenty of tissues.
This book was amazing! I could feel the emotional bond these officers and their families share. It is an unfathomable day when one falls, and even harder to pick up the pieces and move on. Decker does a fantastic job of detailing what it means to wear a badge, and how it affects all those that love them. A must read for all!
