Desired by God: Discover a Strong, Soul-Satisfying Relationship with God by Understanding Who He Is and How Much He Loves You

Rate this book
Popular pastor and acclaimed author Van Moody reveals the secret to a fulfilling, life-sustaining relationship with a deep understanding of just how much He loves us. We were made to be in relationship with God, wired to love and be loved by Him. We feel truly whole and complete only when we have a vital, passionate relationship with Him. And that relationship can occur only with a deep understanding of who God is and how much He loves us. As the story of the Bible makes clear, God’s earnest love for His people is continually given and rejected. To understand how God can keep pursuing us like this, we must see Him as He overflowing with desire for, and relentlessly in pursuit of, His people. Desired by God gives a refreshing, eye-opening picture of this God, who wants with all His heart for us to know Him. And when we see Him clearly and fall in love with Him, we will find ourselves more grounded, satisfied, and cared for than we ever dreamed possible.

This is the first book I have read by Van Moody and I am highly delighted with his book, "Desired by God." The book focuses on the greatest love story of all time: God and His children. The text is divided into three sections: Who is God really?, Love on Display and Living Loved. Moody talks about the different Covenants in the Old and New Testament and God's obvious pursuit for his people. Moody uses many historical examples, inspirational people, his own personal experiences as well as Biblical stories to illustrate his text. On pg. 48, Moody creates a display diagram of a law-based relationship versus a loved-based relationship with God. I gained such fantastic revelation of greater Truths from reading this book! I especially enjoy Chapter 17: The Gift of Favor which talks about God's supernatural goodness on our behalf. Moody includes POINTS TO REMEMBER and QUESTIONS TO PONDER at the end of every chapter. I highly recommend this book and I will be reading more of Van Moody's books in the near future!

This book was really 3.5 stars for me, but when having to choose a rating I felt 4 better reflected my experience than 3 did.

The idea behind this book is beautiful: to help people truly see and understand how deeply God loves and desires them. Moody accomplishes just that. Through a closer, often step-by-step examination of biblical encounters and texts, readers start to see the care and concern of God in the details, the things we’ve likely missed or overlooked through the years, and a fuller picture of God’s love for man begins to take shape. Even as someone who largely operates in Christian settings and has daily reminders of the wonders of God and the Bible, I was reminded of the care and intention of God in every interaction, of His longing and effort to connect with humanity.

So why only 3.5 stars? Here’s my deal: a lot of times the information in the chapters felt simple and/or repetitive. The biggest issue for me, though, were the points to remember at the end of each chapter. The first couple of chapters I thought, “Hey! This is great! What a good way to reinforce important points.” However, after that, I found myself wanting to skip the chapters and read the list of points at the end, as they achieved the same goal without all the extra words. A couple of times, just for fun, I read the list first, formulated in my mind what I imagined the chapter would be like, and then read the chapter. Both times I knew exactly what to expect which, for me, detracted from the impact of the chapter.

Overall, I would recommend this book, particularly for people who are new Christianity and learning about God, but also for people like me - those who might know a whole lot but need to see Him with fresh eyes.

I received an ARC from the publisher, and the opinions expressed here are my own.

“Desired by God,” written by Van Moody of The Worship Center in Birmingham, AL, is an aptly named book that beautifully conveys the truth about how profoundly we are adored by God. Initially, I approached the book cautiously, based on the fact that he sits on one of Joel Osteen’s boards. Moody’s spiritual priorities emerged quickly, though, and I experienced his teaching as focused on a rich personal relationship with God rather than worldly, material wealth. This book is NOT a guide to serving God for cash and prizes.

I loved the way he organized the book. At the highest level, there are three sections entitled “Who is God, Really?,” “Love on Display,” and “Living Love.” The opening and closing of the story are bookended by the story of Søren Kierkegaard’s love for a woman named Regine. I read this multi-faceted love story as a foil for the love that exists in God for us. Søren’s tale reappears strategically throughout the book. Each chapter also tells stories of relatable people that illuminate aspects of God’s love.

I had never approached the Bible with attention to the growth and change of the covenental relationships God has established throughout time with humanity. The author’s handling of the idea was engrossing throughout the book:

And so begins the incredible wilderness journey of Moses and his people of Israel.

Yet even through this epic escape, and into the beginning of their journey through the desert, there was still no law. People grumbled and disobeyed at times, but there was no punishment for breaking the laws. God’s people still lived and operated under the original grant covenant between God and Abraham.

But all that was about to change.

Van Moody’s beliefs about salvation largely parallel my own. A number of times he memorably uses thoughtfully considered lists like this one to make his point:

Here are the things he didn’t have to do to be saved:
* Take a class or earn a degree
* Convert to an established religion
* Keep any laws
* Dress a certain way
* Talk a certain way
* Look a certain way
* Clean up his life
* Free himself from his addictions
* Apologize to anyone
* Seek permission from anyone
* Be approved in advance

He is also decidedly concerned, as am I, with social justice, issues:

Ten kinds of prejudice have been identified:
* Racial
* Sexual
* Chronological (age-ism)
* Geographical
* Educational
* Financial
* Physical
* Denominational
* Ministerial
* Natural
All these prejudices are bad but what is even worse is that they all have oozed their way into the church.

To be fair, I need to add that I was disappointed by two conspicuously absent (and two of my own preferred progressive Christian) practices. God is always a “He” in this book, and based on a few quick searches, Moody’s church is not listed among Birmingham’s LGBTQ-inclusive congregations.

Moody is a masterful storyteller, and I highly recommend “Desired by God”. I envision the audience for this book as believers at any stage of their walk with Jesus, including the earliest stages for new adult Christians. It is a book I would be willing to recommend to non-believing friends curious about spiritual matters, and to believing friends seeking to be refreshed in God’s love. There are a number of other resources available in conjunction with the book, which lead me to believe that it could be appropriate for book clubs, Bible study groups, or adult Sunday School classes.

When I saw a launch team starting for this book, I was initially drawn in by the title. We all seem to have a desire to be desired, especially when the one desiring a relationship with us is the Creator of the universe. I signed up without a second thought and waited eagerly to receive my ARC (advanced reader copy), which I was given as part of an agreement to post an honest review. From the first page, I was instantly drawn in by the straight-forward, understandable ideas presented and the chapters are fairly short as well, making it an easy read – it seems much quicker and more enjoyable to read several small chapters as opposed to the equivalent of one long chapter (anyone relate?). The author writes concerning matters that affect the mind, soul, and overall spiritual well-being and offers advice to incorporate into every problem we face. From the time of the beginning of the world until now, humanity has faced an extensive range of difficulties and this book offers a welcome reminder that we have not yet been abandoned, nor will we ever be, by our Lord. He pursues us, loves us, and draws us close to Him. It’s no longer about laws as it was in the Old Testament, it’s about a relationship. This concept is explained in much more detail than I offer in this review, so I highly encourage that anyone who wishes to know God better pick up a copy of this book and really take some time to fully absorb it. Each chapter concludes with sections labeled “points to remember” and “questions to ponder”, offering an opportunity to study each chapter a bit more in-depth, either by yourself or with a group. This does seem to make the book a bit redundant, but it wasn’t a big issue for me. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the subject matter and the writing style.

This book reminded me of the fact that people, in general, hunger for purpose and meaning in life. As I thought about that notion, I read with interest what Van Moody had to share. Essentially it boils down to the truth that human beings were created to be in a close relationship with God, and we are called to love Him and regardless, be loved by Him.

As we go through the chapters of the book, the author gave numerous examples from the Bible how God's people continually reject His love. The ones who received it, saw God as He truly is - the one who is LOVE. The book constantly reminded me to think about how we are not right with the universe and therefore not right with God, but it caused me to examine the current relational proximity to Him. The content can get heavy at times, so having the summary list at the end of every chapter helps to refocus on the salient points. Overall, a good read!

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher. However, this review reflects my honest personal opinion.

Desired by God is a great book that reminds the reader that people were created for relationship with God. Not only were we created for relationship with Him, but we are completely loved by Him and called to love Him.
Throughout several of the chapters, the author gives examples of how God's people reject him and how people received His love. The author uses examples from the Bible and shows the reader how God is LOVE. This book reminded me again and again how I do not deserve Gods love, but He gives so freely and I need to accept it regardless of how I might feel on a particular day. I think we need to be careful not to get into a works based mentality, but just to receive God's love regardless of the situation that we might find ourselves in from day to day and this book reminded of that. Overall, the author made some great points, some receptive, but great for someone who really struggles with believing God loves them.

I received an Advanced Reader version of "Desired by God" from the publisher. This was my first book by Van Moody. I appreciated several things about this book. First, I really like how each chapter concludes with a section on points to remember and then questions to ponder. You can literally work through this book chapter-by-chapter on your own or with a small group.
Secondly, Pastor Moody teaches the meaning behind each type of covenant including kinship covenants and vassal covenants. I didn't have much of an understanding of the differences between them. I found his teaching to be very helpful and easy to comprehend.
Throughout the book, the love story between Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard and Regine Olsen is used as an illustration to depict our own love story with God and ultimately with His Son.

If this book doesn't convince you that God loves you and has always pursued a loving relationship with you, I'm not sure you can be convinced.

I wasn't familiar with Van Moody before reading this book, but I was impressed by his writing style and his skillful weaving of biblical concepts with modern-day illustrations. The book is a series of meditations on aspects of the love of God, and they are masterfully written. I was especially impressed with the chapter on forgiveness. I recently published my first book, "Make Like Lazarus," and it includes a chapter on forgiveness. So I know a little something about it. I know more after reading Moody's insights.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have read an advance copy of the book by agreement with the publisher and I think you'll enjoy this book too.

Note: I won an Advanced Reader's Copy, Uncorrected Proof from GoodReads.

I will admit that I am not a regular reader of religious books, but because I won this addition I felt obligated to give it a try. I was pleased that Van Moody included many "stories" that provided food for thought and didn't spend a whole text "preaching." I found the format easy to read with each chapter including "Points to Remember" and "Points to Ponder." The take-away message wasn't any more involved than "God loves you." Refreshing when faced with all the hoops in organized religion today. If you want a book that encourages self-reflection, this is a good one.

Good examples as illustrations of his points. It kept me focused and made the text more relatable.
I appreciate the “points to remember” and “questions to ponder” sections at the end of each chapter. Challenging questions for further thought and personal development.

I received a digital copy of the book from the publisher for review.

The premise of this book is excellent: God loves us and deeply desires a relationship with us. The focus is on God’s love and grace as opposed to legalism, restrictive rules to follow, and retribution. The format is good, though the “Points to Remember” section is redundant if one read the chapter carefully. The “Questions to Ponder” can be helpful and reflective. The biggest issue for me was that some Biblical stories were recounted at such a high level that some key points were left out and I disagreed with the author’s interpretation of several of them. Still, the overarching message of this book is solid. I am pleased that I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy of the book from the publisher.

Relevant stories are compared with Biblical people and events to help the reader grow in faith. Pertinent questions at chapter end assist the reader with introspection and deeper personal knowledge.

One of the best Jesus books I’ve read in a long time. I highly recommend it. It’s nothing but a reminder of the fact that God loves you and wants you! Not a book about what you have to “do” or how to “purpose-driven” or any of that garbage. Just “be” and accept the love that Jesus has for you. SSOOO many people need this message - slow down and BE WITH JESUS!! Than you Jesus for loving me!!

Helpful and uplifting,but misleading in many areas too

Moody’s words about God’s love for us are uplifting and encouraging. Still I would cation readers that in many places the treatment of Biblical text is brief or shallow.

I expected so much more from this book. Half of each chapter was about Kierkegaard. Why? I wanted a book about God.

As other reviewers have stated, this got a little bit repetitive for me. Honestly, I might have given it 3 stars had it not been for one component that I really loved. Each chapter begins with a story- some are historical and some are sweet love stories or heroic moments. Throughout the book, he also shares parts of Søren Kierkegaard's story and I really enjoyed that aspect.
Overall I think this book would speak more to a new Christian that is just beginning to fall in love with Jesus, or to someone who has had a rocky faith and is rediscovering their love for God.
I received an ARC of this book, the opinions expressed are solely my own.

This book is about our relationship with God. How he loves us. And about the covenants he has made with us over the years. Each chapter is enough to read one or two a night. They each start with a story that then relates to the topic of that chapter. The chapter ends with a summary of bullet points to take away and then some questions to consider. I really enjoyed reading this book.

I received a free copy from Goodreads but my opinions are my own.
