A monstrous secret hides in the backwoods of a remote western town—a portal connecting our world to forty-two other universes. The visitors—most would call them terrifying—often have devastating effects. Their destruction hasn’t been intentional… until lately. The usual band of protectors, The Rifters, defend us with daring and weapons built from coils, gears, and crystals, which is no longer enough. Earth’s survival depends on an outlaw from 1888 and a librarian with a knack for ghosts.
The Rifters Box Set The Rifters, The Initiate, and The Reader.
The Daelin Long moves to Settler, Oregon, after being laid off from her job and robbed at gunpoint in New York City. County librarian isn’t her dream job, but she’s excited to reconnect with her younger sister. Only, her sister is missing and there’s a phantom stealing heads. The town is plain weird and gets worse when Daelin stumbles upon its deepest secrets.
The Daelin Long joins the Rifters in hopes of finding her lost sister. Instead, she finds a swarm of killer bees like no other. These bees start off as pebbles and sting like fire. Her first lesson is to trust her fellow Rifters absolutely. Daelin does, but they can’t trust her. She has her sister’s secrets to keep.
The Daelin Long rises in the ranks of the Rifters. The rift closes for the season, and Daelin worries over her sister stuck on the other side. With the rift closed, the town should be quiet. Only, it’s not. Dead people are coming to life, and those who should be around are missing. Daelin and the Rifters must figure out how to fight a monster without the energy of the rift to power their weapons.
M. Pax is author of the sci-fi series, The Backworlds, and the new adult urban fantasy Hetty Locklear series. A Browncoat and SG fan, she's also slightly obsessed with Jane Austen. In the summers she docents as a star guide at Pine Mountain Observatory where the other astronomers now believe she has the most extensive collection of moon photos in existence. No fear, there will be more next summer. She lives in stunning Central Oregon with the Husband Unit and two lovely, spoiled cats. Want to connect? Visit www.mpaxauthor.com
I've reviewed the first two of this box set previously. I really like this series and where it's going.
Book One: The Rifters
4 – Stars I like M. Pax's stories. They're fresh and always leave me wanting more. The idea of a modern day western/fantasy isn't something that I would normally like. However, this story kind of grabs you and drags you along because of the characters even though at times the writing is kind of clunky. Seems like it was banged out real quick and could have used another round of editing. Again, though the characters drag you along putting those irritations in the back of your mind.
Book Two: The Initiate
4 - Stars
Second in the Rifters series, the book starts immediately after the ending of the first book. We find Daelin has had bits of her memory wiped to protect her Sister from the Governors who control the rift. Daelin takes the oath and becomes the new librarian and the fun continues.
For his part, Earl has taken off to become someone else again. In reality he's running from his past, trying to change the man that he is, but Dante keeps showing up and reminding him that he just keeps doing the same things.
Earl meets Silas, his ancestor who fought in the Revolution who Dante also found in the rift. Together they rush back to the town of Settler to rescue Charming from the rift and to help fight the attacking rock like bees the Governors sent through.
It's an easy read and the story is intriguing enough to keep you turning the pages.
Book Three: The Reader
4 – Stars
It's now fall and the rift is closing, with Daelin and Sabina standing by to ensure that nothing comes through before it does. Daelin is bored and pines for city life and excited when a potential job in Portland is available and the owner of a publishing house is traveling her way and will stop for an interview. But there's the fact that Charming is still on the other side of the rift fighting the beginnings of a war.
Daelin's brother Cobb arrives in town telling her knows Charmin is in trouble because she sent him keys to her office at the Paleo Institute as well as the code to get into the place. When Mr. Seawell (publisher) arrives in town he joins Cobb and Wald for a tour of the strange house of the founder, and later both go missing. After being missing for a couple of days with no response and the tracker showing the location of his car outside the town library, Mr. Seawell's assistant brings in the Sheriff and a Oregon State Detective forcing Daelin and the Rifters to do their work behind the scenes after finding a strange albino tree in the forest that has cocooned both Cobb and Mr. Seawell, making copies of them and sending them around town.
It's a good, fun read, with a lot of character development from Daelin, Earl, and Gussie.
I wasn't sure what to expect from this set but found myself very intrigued. The idea that there is a portal that needs to be protected by the Rifters in this small community from dangerous creatures from other worlds allows for a very interesting storyline.
While it takes place in our current times, it has a mix of the Old West and steampunk as well as time travel. The story is narrated by two of the characters. One is Daelin who is a young woman new to the town and thrown right into the mix. The other is Earl who is a man that has come thru the gate from an earlier time in history and has a lot of secrets.
I found myself really drawn to the characters. Daelin tries so hard to do what is needed to protect those she loves. It forces her to lie in some cases which makes her very uncomfortable. She loves books and never expected to have to take on monsters from other worlds.
This includes the first three books but the story continues and you will definitely want to read more.
First book, Daelin arrives in Settler, OR to see her sister Charming. But she finds other things going on. If you don't continue to read, anything else I might say would be a spoiler and these books are to good to be ruined.
Outstanding time travel and more, stories to keep you intrigued until the end. Loved each one by this superb author. Received a free copy and reviewed because they were fantastic.
I have read these three as well as the fourth... and I'm awaiting the rest of the series! M.Pax has created an awsome tale with a female main character, as well as a diverse group of other characters who guard The Rift! A must read!
