Katsura Hoshino ((星野 桂 Hoshino Katsura) was born on April 21, 1980, in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, as the younger of fraternal twin girls and the second of three children. She drew her first manga at twenty-one. In 1998, Hoshino moved to Tokyo. She dreamed of bringing her mother to the city and was able to in 2006.
She made her debut with her comics in July 2003 with the publication of her first manga series Continue and is known for her work, D.Gray-man, which began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump in May 2004.
This volume contains chapters 223 through 230 as well as a lengthy discussion room answering reader questions. The discussion room alone was worth price of admission, but the main story is on point as well and made me tear up a little.
Not much in the way of main story answers in this one, but some great character interactions and foreshadowing leading into the next volume and dang the art is beautiful in this one.
(Also, the chapter titles "Saying Farewell to A.W." has me very worried about the future of that character...)
Man I really love this series. When I watched the first 50 episodes of the anime a few years ago I liked it but didn't love it so I'm glad I finally decided to read the manga. The characters: the hardships and struggles they go through, the story and the many reveals we get throughout, I love it all.
Like Allen is such a good pure soul and his mantra of "don't stop, keep walking" is so admirable and inspiring. And watching Lavi struggle with being the next bookman and being a friend/exorcist was another fave. Also finally getting an arc about Kanda and his past was great plus sickening and sad, it was heart breaking. But it helped make me feel so much for Kanda as we didn't get much about him before that. And his will to help Allen now because of the regret he feels is.just.so.good. And learning about Nea and Mana's past surprised me with how much I enjoyed it? I didn't think I'd care honestly but I was so wrong.
Anyways if I had to name some dislikes it would be some of the transitions between arcs, it confused me sometimes. And characters too as we don't see much of Lavi and Lenalee after volume 16-17 which I guess is understandable as we focus more on other characters but it still felt weird without them. Oh and I don't think I've read a manga series with such drastic changes in art style throughout as DGM but it was nice to see Hoshino's development.
4/5 Well shit... I'm caught up now. I know Volume 27 is out in japan so I can probably get 8 or so more chapters from Scanlations. It was a wild ride getting this far. I'll probably just be waiting for the next English release so probably not until mid 2021. oh well I guess we'll see what happens. It'd be nice if the pace was picked back up to at least monthly. Since I'm sure weekly is out of the question. The cover this time features Cross Marian, a young Allen, and Timcampy.
I love this series, yet it has been a while since I read volume 25, and so it takes a minute to remember the context here. There isn't too much going on in this volume, would rather say that it is setting up a much more significant encounter, but it still manages to explore Allen Walker's relationship with Johnny and Kanda. It shows that he left everyone behind because he cares for them. He can't exactly make it alone, and sometimes he forgets to appreciate the people who stand by his side, but it's understandable considering everything he's been through and the fact that he can't protect any of them from others or even himself. The 14th's presence is interesting as it adds tension, Allen can't even trust himself since the 14th can take over his body at any time. The way Allen took back control of his body, the way they showed it as a soul returning in the form of an Akuma, was odd, and it would be interesting if that was foreshadowing something, but it could also just be a coincidence. Who knows. Either way, the art is gorgeous and I'm looking forward to reading the next volume!

Honestly I have such anxiety over Hoshino dying before she finishes this series. I feel like we are getting close to the end just by the tone of the series now and name of the chapters, except there is still so much mystery!! Mostly a transition book, lots of character moments and hints to the wider mystery, but the plot didn't move forward that much.
when I first set out to read D. Gray man (via sj) I was under he impression that it was complete but alas 🥲
I could not believe how much I enjoyed this series, from the pure good hearted Allen to all of the exorcists
Frankly I enjoyed everything from the power system, the villains, the quick pacing, the evolution of designs, and politics within and around the order, it really is all so well done
where it starts to meander for me is when, Allen uncovers a part of himself, which plotwise was so creative, but narratively, afterwords, where the momentum is dropped, and not long after the series comes a slow still
“Otaku USA was amazed by the amount of its different mixed elements, stating that it is "part shonen, part fantasy, part horror, part mythology, part action, part comedy, part really warped comedy, part goth, part historical, part alternative history," concluding that although these elements are typical of manga, the series "remains so different."” - wiki page (sorry I couldn’t have said it better myself)
I’m happy to have picked up this series, something so fresh (to me), but somehow also nostalgic
I hope this series will conclude how it intends to, and when it does I hope to read it
Just when Allen Walker seemed lost with only his determination to guide him, Johnny Gill helps him, referring to the very emotional resonance which allows akuma to be born, bringing the story full circle even as it becomes more complicated.
Just as it seemed there was no way out for Allen with both friends and enemies cornering him, he escapes almost everyone, starting another journey which takes him back to the beginning.
I love how this story, this series has evolved, yet manages to return to its origins even while we continue to follow Mana and Nea, the evolved story of more and more revelations concerning the Millennium Earl.
Tyki Mikk is evolving, too. He’s curious about Nea, yet he likes Allen better or seems to. None of the Noah are happy about Nea, giving them a very familial and human divisiveness, continuing their evolution, too, although not all of them are keeping up with Tyki.
Allen and Kanda have come so far, sharing secrets about the Innocence and the Order, yet somehow back where they began, starting on a path together, developing a new phase of their realtionship.
This was another compelling and beautiful story, returning to Allen as much as the Millennium Earl, making me very curious where it will go next.
continuing to nab every new volume, all the love for hoshino-sensei's insane n wonderful art! i miss everyone so much and the confrontations here are heartwrenching (nea/tyki, allen discovering tim's death, more cross flashbacks, allen/kanda with allen realising that he needs other ppl)... can't wait for the next release!
Still my favorite series. I love the idea of holy warriors. Glad this book is back in production after so long and hope it finishes without another delay. My only issue is that after so long it seems the art has changed and not for the better. It doesn't seem as detailed or shaded as previous issues. This made the action sometimes hard to follow.
reviewing this volume separately because the cover is just *chefs kiss* i love the dynamic between cross and allen so much bro and kanda is a KING <3 god im so obsessed with this anime im like a crazy person but it’s such a good story i couldn’t recommend it enough!!!! (even though some parts are slow, its sooo good! if you dont like the anime please give the manga a chance because its so good!)
This was a good end to one part of this whole arch and yet I found it interesting that it chose to return to humour in the middle of it. Which I did find funny. Yet this answered several questions and yet still keeps somethings secret. But I would say that this break was cut short at the end as it seems to be setting up the climax of this series.
I'm so happy to see Hoshino coming back to DGM. I loved this volume, especially the end. This is my OG top series ever, so I cannot wait to see what Allen has in store for us.
My goodness, this whole series has been so intense and mind-blowing. New twists and detail has been added that I really am excited for the next volume!
