Barron's How to Prepare for the GRE Test: Graduate Record Examination

Rate this book
The new edition of this comprehensive test-preparation manual has been radically revised and updated to reflect the most recent Graduate Record Exams in length, structure, question types, and degree of difficulty. The book features 00 model tests with answers and explanations. It also contains all new and up-to-date subject review material in its mathematics sections, as well as all new math questions in the model tests. Other important features include a 3,500-word (?) vocabulary building list, plus practice and review in sentence completion, reading comprehension, and all other test areas. The manual can be purchased with an optional CD-ROM that features a model test in the Computer Adaptive format. Computer Adaptive Tests present a succession of questions that are measured in difficulty according to the test taker's ability level, which is measured by responses to the test's initial questions. Since these tests are not linear, but are created from a behind-the-scenes pool of questions, the CD-ROM presents a test that is unique for each user. All questions are answered and explained, and exams are scored automatically.

This was a great help, especially its 3000 vocabulary words.

I picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend. I also tried a couple of books from other test prep companies (primarily when I had learned most of the questions on Barron's CD-ROM). Based on what I've seen, Barron's is far and away the best test preparation if you are willing to sit down and actually learn the material. I bought it primarily for math prep, and it focused heavily on underlying understanding of algebra and geometry. This book devotes comparatively little space to tricks and tips on how to answer questions you don't know, and seems instead to focus on making sure you know the answer. This can be more work, but in the end I think it's worth it.

Good for vocab (though there are FAR more words stuffed into this book than you'll ever see on the actual test). Be prepared- in all regards- for over-preparation with this book.
