"As a doctor the number one question I get from patients when they are faced with a scary choice in medicine today, 'Doc, what would you do?' This is the story of what happened when my 71 year old mother was dying of cancer. Tim Ferriss saved her life. This story will save yours," Annette Bosworth, MD. In ANYWAY YOU CAN, Dr Bosworth shares her ‘accidental’ discovery of ketosis and its wide array of health benefits as she supplemented her mom’s chemotherapy with ketones. Her story of courage, faith, and tenacity helps young and old achieve better physical, mental, and emotional health through ketosis. Dr Bosworth inspires patients to become stewards of their own health through her leadership skills, public speaking and “sticky teachable moments.” When patients ask how to turn around their chronic health problem, she answers “Fight it ANYWAY YOU CAN. Ketones for Life.”
I have been living and studying keto lifestyle for close to one year, so I read this book with plenty of prior knowledge and experience. Dr. Bosworth has distilled lots of complex information into an easily-readable book. This is a great resource for beginners, but I still learned several things from this book. I would recommend that readers continue their studies after reading this book, as I find that there is always more one can learn to help make the lifestyle more practical, enjoyable, and fine-tuned to one’s unique personal nutritional needs. I have a few personal favorite resources online.
I like that this book discusses several of the many health benefits of keto, not just weight loss.
The (very graphic) story of Grandma Rose is woven nicely into the other “information-based” chapters. The story should inspire others who are battling cancer. She and her family went through a lot and it’s amazing that she is alive and vibrant. The keto diet is used by one of the most prominent cancer centers in the U.S.
Regarding the keto lifestyle, I must say that it has been life-changing for me, and I did not have any chronic medical conditions prior to starting. I sleep better than I have ever slept in my life. I have lost fat weight without effort or hunger. My energy levels are high and my thinking is clear and focused. My emotions are much more stable. Eating is much more pleasurable and satisfying. I am not enslaved by food any longer; my life used to revolve around making sure that I had food available at all times so that I could keep my blood sugars as stable as possible. Now, I eat 2-3 meals per day, no snacking, no carrying food with me everywhere I go. And, my food is more nutrient-dense than before. Finally, I am able to go on extended hikes or bike rides without needing to carry food to refuel. Just need to maintain hydration and electrolytes.
The food pyramid and My Plate put out by the US government has not done our citizens any favors. Either has our food industry. 80 percent of the stuff in our grocery stores is absolute trash.
My fervent prayer is that more oncologists learn about the benefits of being in ketosis to improve the lives of their patients. I found this book to be very inspirational! Thank you, Dr. Boz!
This is the amazing story that convinced me to finally change my diet from "just low carb" to full on Keto. I seem to have followed a sort of natural progression through stages...from grain-free, sugar-free, processed-food free (Paleo) about 6 years ago to low-carb Paleo (following Dr. William Davis's "Wheat Belly" plan) last July...spent a year and a bit flirting with Keto, and then Dr. Bosworth inspired me to have a committed relationship with it. LOL
I had already dropped 35 lbs and gotten off my diabetes and heart meds just by going low carb and following Wheat Belly. What inspired me to take it to the next level? Dr. Bosworth's audio book where she casually tells her mother's story of her journey through cancer treatment as well as her simple yet thorough and scientific explanations for how and why the ketogenic diet works...not only to help people reverse many different chronic illnesses, but to have your body running in the most efficient manner, the way the body is designed to run. And to do it permanently, not just as a quick weight loss diet.
My inspiration is the same thing that inspired Dr. Bosworth herself to stick with Keto--BRAIN POWER! I want my brain running on ketones, to be sharper mentally and to retain that sharpness as I age. I watched my father suffer for years with dementia, and I really do not want my kids to have to watch me do the same. I've been doing full on Keto for about 2 months now, and even though I've only lost another 10 lbs and am still significantly overweight, I feel better than I have in years as I approach my 60th birthday. It's really not about the weight; I don't even own a scale and only weigh every few weeks at my work.
The book is not what I would call "expertly written." It's clumsy in places and the eloquence you'd expect with a professional writer isn't always there. I can hear Dr. Boz saying, "I'm a doctor, not a writer, Jim!" in her best Star Trek imitation of Bones. LOL But the story itself it wonderful and the information it conveys even more so. It's an important book. Read it!
What a very inspirational story. I just loved it. I am working to get a keto lifestyle and this book definitely helped. This book also goes into the life of Dr. Bosworth's Mother and how she fought off cancer with ketones and how it saved her life. I follow Dr. Boz on youtube and love her channel where she talks about how to start and continue with this lifestyle. I highly recommend this book as well as her youtube series.
Dr. Bosworth is the real healer. I first found her on YouTube less then a month ago. I binge watched all her videos then bought her book. If you follow her advice about keto and IF you WILL be happy, healthy and feel the best ever. I wish I could give this book 100 stars.
I need to do something for my health and I am seeing so many people having success with keto. I am not sure I would be able to actually do it, but this book really gave me a very good beginners guide in why keto might be the answer, how to go about it and what to expect. I am not totally sold on the idea, but I think that is born out of my own fear about what it will do to my body. Still this was definitely the book I needed to get started in learning all about this diet.
I don't have any dislikes For this book. I would have liked the how to guide by the end of it Not just an overview. I would recommend this book to people who wants to learn what can do to the body. Doctor Box is a great Storyteller. To me she made the information very easy to understand and not a lot of medical terminology to get lost in
The story of Grandma Rose definitely pulled my heartstrings! It kept me captivated to read a medical book in 2 sittings, which is not the norm for me. I appreciate all the lessons and can't wait to put them into practice. Ketones for life!
Really opened my eyes to the healing power of the keto diet. I read a lot in the past about cancer healing and the Gerson Therapy &/or Raw Veganism. I was vegan for 8 years then switched to a paleo template in 2018 to help with my autoimmune disease and chronic pain. I've made a lot of healing progress by decreasing my carbs to 50g per day with Type 1 Diabetes. I found Dr. Boz on Youtube with her work with a Type 1 Diabetic patient. Thanks to this book and other resources I'm now considering making the keto switch.
The only critique I have of this book is that the formatting could be improved a bit. I love how it switched back and forth between the science and the story of her mother, but the transitions were a little rough, making it hard to read. Could flow better, but good content nonetheless!
This book had a lot of good information about the keto diet in it. It also has a lot of typos and redundancies but I was willing to overlook that for the other information. I have been on the Keto diet for a year already and some of what I read about problems you can experience when starting the diet made a lot of sense. I gave this book to my husband who was recently diagnosed as diabetic so I am hoping he will be willing to give Keto a try.
Quite the inspirational story. Dr. Bosworth shares a ton of information in this book, but she does so in a way that makes it really easy to understand.
Do not judge a book by its cover! This was a very informative book, especially since I became more interested in the ketogenic diet after discovering I was a diabetic in Nov of 2020. I’ve been on keto for at least a month now. The verdict. I have successfully controlled my blood sugar levels without ever relying on meds through keto in one month and I lost 20 lbs.
I first came across Dr. Boz on her YouTube channel on the recommends after watching Dr. Sarah Hallberg’s TED talk on “how to reverse type 2 diabetes, ignoring the ADA guidelines.” Dr. Boz was very articulated and explain things so simply. I am a scientist by occupation, so it wasn’t needed, however, I appreciated the simple lingual. I became interested in her book after listening to her talk about Keto on YouTube.
The book talks about the science of keto and the application of this keto (after Dr. Boz, herself experimented it) on her 70 year old mother during her fight with cancer (whose picture is on the cover of the book). Through Dr. Boz’s mother’s experience of fighting cancer, she explains the use and therapeutic applications of the ketogenic diet combined with intermittent fasting and how that provides benefits to your body. When I first started with keto, like Dr. Boz, I had many quesions about the process, biology, and practices of keto. For example:
How do I get started? What is happening in our body during ketosis? Why is my fasting blood sugars so high in the morning? What is happening in our body during the initial weeks of ketosis? Why do I get headaches going into ketosis? How do we know if we are in ketosis? What foods are considered keto? How do we avoid pitfalls? If we had setbacks, how long does it take to get back into ketosis?
Not gonna lie, the story and explanation was so well told that it logically makes sense. This book gave me all the answers I needed in one go. I wish I had started reading this book first, before spending many hours doing my own research of keto. Dr. Boz also suggests a couple of food suggestions and many references in case you want to do more reading on your own.
Moreover, keto isn’t a scientifically standard practice recommended to patients in clinics/hospitals yet, so I admired Dr. Boz’s drive (after spending many hours researching and experimenting on herself), a doctor who goes out of their way, against standard practices, to save her mother’s life and you know what, she succeeded!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about keto. I was very inspired and felt more confident in what I was doing after reading the book. I would recommend this book to type 2 diabetics and anyone who is interested in the keto diet!
An amazing well-written, a brilliant true story written by Annette Bosworth, MD, a practicing physician of Internal Medicine, currently in the Tampa, Florida, area, as she teaches and tells us about the Ketogenic lifestyle of eating, focusing on the ketogenic metabolic chemistry of the body and how we can use it to treat many types of diseases, such as autoimmune, neurological, as well as cancers through the story she tells us about herself and her mother, Grandma Rose, as they embark on a journey together working hard to get her into the deepest levels of ketosis as possible to have low blood glucose as well as high ketones to get to a ratio, mathematically, to help cure her mother's cancer when otherwise she was looking at imminent death as more chemotherapy both threatened and faced her mother's life, yet Dr. Boz knew there was a way medically and scientifically proven, to save her mother's life via her metabolism with the ketogenic lifestyle of eating, in addition to some of our modern medicines available today. What we learn in this book can be adapted to follow ourselves. Keto is much more than just a bonus of a weight loss diet, it becomes a lifestyle of eating and living and it's proven both medically and scientifically to optimize our health, especially for those of us with diseased bodies who want much better health. This story was hard to put down, I read and read! I loved reading about Grandma Rose as well as learning how powerful the Ketogenic diet/lifestyle of eating truly is, again, for great health optimization. Highly recommended reading, by far. After reading this book and being inspired by the results and power Keto holds for improving/optimizing our health to such great degrees, you want to learn and practice even more in your own life to reach your own optimal health with ketogenesis. This has spurred me on to read Dr. Boz's second book called The Keto Contimuun, the story of David, as well as ourselves as she teaches us even more. Her third book, The Keto Contimuun Workbook has lessons about Keto from the beginner to the advanced practicer of this lifestyle. The workbook encourages us to fill it out and practice the steps ourselves. The 'continuum' is a number of steps to follow to get to where you want to be with Keto and to keep practicing it and so much more. You can find this author all over social media by Dr. Boz. I highly suggest following her! I really enjoy her videos as well, there is much more to learn as well as at her website, BozMD.com.
Such an inspiring book for anyone seeking to reverse and improve their health
I read this book in one sitting as I could not put it down! Intertwined within the chapters where Dr. Boz shares her sweet mother's journey/ battle with Leukemia, are nuggets of tidbits to help you the reader, learn more about the ketogenic way of eating.
Dr Boz provides very simple and clear explanations of how and WHY one should change their dietary habits from the Standard American Diet to a ketogenic diet. If her mother's story isn't compelling in its own, certainly the health benefits, which she explains in detail, should be inspiring enough to force a change!
In this day and age of so many people being overweight and burdened with a plethora of health issues, this approach should be a first line defense in helping to reverse these issues. Unfortunately, there are still many physicians nationwide, who for whatever their reasons, refuse to advocate this way of eating. As a result, patients are left to advocate for themselves while seeking resources outside of the local medical establishment.
I, like many others stumbled across information on the ketogenic lifestyle though social media three years ago. I haven't looked back. This way of eating has not only saved my life, it's given me BACK my life.
I garnered several "ah ha" moments when reading this book. So, whether new to this way of eating or a veteran, this book is well worth the afternoon read!
Thank you Dr. Boz for being a reliable resource in the Me to community!
I have been irregularly following a low carb lifestyle for over a decade but recently became interested in the keto diet as a means of reducing inflammation related to health issues incurred via military service. I have read about 15 books related either directly or indirectly to the keto and low carb diets and have watched and listened to dozens of youtube videos and podcasts. Dr. Bozworth "Dr. Boz" is the most articulate and scientific method focused speaker and writer I have been privileged to hear or read on this topic. This book incorporates Dr. Boz's initial research and application as she assisted her Mom during her fight with cancer, the newer discoveries of therapeutic applications of Ketogenic Diet blended with Intermittent Fasting and it's radically effective results were blended into a cogent and coherent explanation of what a keto diet consists of, what your body is likely to do when you begin this diet, how to avoid pitfalls and detail of what is happening in your body during the initial weeks followed by detailed food suggestions and a bibliography of references.
I highly recommend this book for those interested in the science behind the keto and to a lesser extend low carb lifestyles and also recommend looking Dr. Boz up on youtube and listening to her videos, many of which contain somewhat updated information than that available at the time her first book was published.
I was interested in learning about the Keto diet. I found Dr. Boz on YouTube. She was so fun, perky, and informative that I had to buy her book. I figured I was enjoying her YouTube videos so much that I should contribute something.
The book was a very pleasant surprise.
I read this genre of Dr. diet books in the past. It is hell to get through them. They are so loaded with science, facts, and figures that they get left on the did not finish pile.
Not so with Dr. Boz's book. She weaves a very personal story of the keto diet, her mom's cancer, and how she discovered how eating this way might help her mom. Her journey of self-discovery grabbed me because she is so transparent and humble. There seems to be a lot of, "I didn't know that." kinds of moments.
This made the book a journey of mutual discovery between Dr. Boz and me. At least that's how it felt to me. She has a way of writing like we were sitting in a coffee shop just talking. Her Midwestern roots make her a fun person to walk with, talk with, and learn from.
The book was enjoyable, easy, and very informative. And if it isn't enough, you always got her videos on YouTube.
I have struggled my whole life with my weight and at nearly 200 pounds in my mid 50's I had given up hope. But I watched Dr Boz's YouTube channel one day and heard about the stubborn liver. Finally, someone explaining in scientific terms why I can't lose weight! I watched more and heard about this book. I loved that her back story included her 72 yo Mom but that Dr Boz didn't talk too much about her "Why" in starting this journey. I also NEEDED the keto "How's " and "Why". We stubborn humans need the reasons for some of the "rules of Keto!" I sure did! That makes the journey with it's successes and failures feel doable. I don't have to beat myself up for mistakes, I now have the tools to scientifically keep moving forward. I'm no longer guessing and hoping because Dr Boz has laid it all out and gave us the way to hack our messed up body chemistry. It was easy to read, although I would recommend getting the paperback book for marking and making notes to keep your information easy to access. Thank you Dr Boz!
I loved this book and the very candid expressions of the suffering Grandma Rose endured in order to survive. How lucky she was to have Dr. Boz as her daughter and mentor. I’ve been in Ketosis for 6 months and feel the best I’ve felt in years and I watch and enjoy all of Dr. Boz’s podcasts on You Tube. I will definitely continue to make ketosis my permanent lifestyle. I test daily and have not gone out of ketosis a single time since I started. May God continue to bless Dr. Boz for sharing life saving information with others through her book and may Grandma Rose continue to be a survivor for many years. This book is loaded with valuable information for anyone starting on a healthy ketosis lifestyle and I highly recommend it and am looking forward to Dr. Box’s next book.
I read this in about 2 settings! It was informative and inspirational. I have been following a Paleo diet which was great to get all the processed garbage out of my diet and retrain my pallet. However, I am very insulin resistant and was not really getting the best I could out of this diet. I started to go lower carb with my Paleo diet and started reading up on the science of a Ketogenic diet. This book puts it into a format I could understand with enough science to appeal to the geek in me :) I haven't yet started to measure ketones yet but have supplies on order. I have dropped my carbs to 20 or below per day and keeping my protein at an appropriate level and adding more healthy fats. I will leave dairy out of my Keto plan, as it is inflammatory for me. In 2 months I have lost over 30 pounds and don't have the crazy carb cravings that I had before.
A heartfelt story to understand and implement a Keto lifestyle
So grateful to Dr Boz for sharing Grandma Rose’s story to teach people how they can actively improve their health and their lives instead of becoming another sad statistic of Allopathetic medicine. The science is easily understandable and the steps are broken down. Reading this book has become my motivator to become the best version of myself. As a healthcare provider in my 50’s I was sadly surprised by what I did not know. Finding out that most of the nutrition information we have been fed is “garbage”. I now know my “why” and working to eliminate what is considered “normal” cognitive and physical decline as we age is my daily motivation to skip the easy temptations and change years of high carbohydrate eating.
Im a keto nerd. I understand the process, and continue to be successful at it, but I fail at explaining the science of this lifestyle to others when Im asked. After reading this book, Im able to give enough info to someone to get the idea, and if they are truly wanting to step away from the dark side (carbs), I will recommend this book!
Dr. Boz.... your story of your moms battle (bless her heart) really hit home with me. My name is also Annette, and I too traveled alongside my moms cancer journey. For many years I had guilt for not being able to save her. Thank you for sharing your story, and bless you for being such a loving and caring daughter. I look forward to reading more of your books and hunting for you on any podcasts that are part of my keto world.
You have changed my life! I am type 1 diabetic and have been watching on YouTube. I have been dipping my toe into the keto water for quite some time now, but ultimatly was afraid because of my diabetes. As of today's date I have been in ketosis for 2 weeks, have lost 7lbs and my blood sugars have NEVER been this good b4! I have been feeling fantastic since around day 3 in ketosis, I am sleeping better, waking up better, have more energy and get up and Go! Some day I would like to meet you and give you a big hug Dr Boz! Thank-you from the bottom of my heart for your in-depth explanations about how Ketosis really works, I am so looking forward to your next book! God Bless! Tami Grgas
Thank you Dr Boz, this is the answer I've been looking for. I have diabetes and cancer. I've been trying to get to ketosis with the 24hr fast, I got there twice and fell off the wagon. Now that I read you're book, that shouldn't happen again. I have a few test coming up, give me luck. I would and will recommend this book to everyone who is seriously considering turning your diabetes around. Thanks again, and I hope grandma Rose lives a long and healthy life.
If you're serious about reversing diabetes then read this book. Ketones for life. It took me a while to get my first ketone but when I did I checked my sugar level, and for the first time in a while it was below 90. It will only get better. Send my love to grandma Rose.
My husband, Butch has battled obesity most of his adult life. Everything worked for awhile, even his lap and. He was considering gastric sleeve surgery but at the age of 69 with heart issues, diabetes 2 and more was hesitant. We came across Dr Boz on u tube and in two weeks his life is totally changing. Two weeks ago his blood sugar was 365, today it was 98, he’s already lost 17 lbs, peeing ketones like crazy, energized and excited. He has a new hobby - his health. We both loved this book and are reading it for the second time to absorb more. Thank you Dr Bosworth from the bottom of my heart. I’m not waiting for him to die on me anymore, I’m just hoping I can keep up with him now!
Ever since I can remember I've been on diet's, I lose I gain back. My son gave me this book and said read it and see what you think, I had already started with Keto with Dr. Ken Berry. So I started reading, I'm not a fan of these type of books they take a lot of focus and time. But it's helped a lot with helping understand what sugar is doing to me, not to mention I am a Diabetic 2 and Liver Fat. I started in March 2021 and managed to lose 20 lb. unlike others who were losing 30-40 a month. Dr. Bosworth explained that and it helped me to not give up. I would say that a Keto diet has it's many forms, so find the one you can stick and not get confused and feel helpless in your efforts. Good Book and worth reading.
This book is amazing. Dr. Bosworth does an excellent job of explaining her mom's cancer journey and does a very thorough job of explaining ketosis (you don't need a degree to understand this book). As a medical professional myself, I thought that the science behind ketosis made a lot of sense (thanks for distilling all that research). As I was reading, I kept thinking that there is so much misinformation about diets in general. I'm glad that the universe helped me find this book. I also want to stress that a keto lifestyle is not about loosing weight, although it does that, a keto lifestyle helps you be healthy in this diet crazy world.
I’ve just started my Keto journey (4 months low carb, 2 months full Keto) and having great results. I literally transformed from average aging 56-yr old man, back to my 18-yr old lean and fit young self - simply amazing!
This book will be one of my first recommendations to newbies and skeptics. It will either inspire them to consider adopting a Keto lifestyle for the many benefits, or at least begin to understand my passion for this powerful approach to health and nutrition!
Thanks Dr. Bosworth for writing something that should be intelligible and inspiring to most people!
