In this dark psychological thriller, a wealthy husband turns up dead, and his abused wife is charged with the crime. She calls Riley for help—and yet it seems clear she is guilty.
But when another wealthy, abusive husband turns up dead, the FBI is called in, and FBI special agent Riley Paige wonders: is this all a coincidence? Or could this be the work of a serial killer?
What ensues is a game of cat and mouse, as Riley Paige realizes she is up against a brilliant and unpredictable killer, one without a clear motive—and one determined to keep on killing until he is caught.

FBI Agent Riley Paige is appealed to, to help solve two cases. The first involves a wife who seemingly agrees with the unofficial police verdict that she's guilty, even though she can't remember killing her husband. Later a young mother needs help to find her kidnapped daughter, although one has to wonder why the she won't involve the police. Riley (also inexplicably), allows rookie detective Jared, (assigned to her out of 'spite' by her boss, when Riley refuses his loathsome advances), to tag along, annoying the reader, (not just Riley) on many occasions, often interrupting and getting in her way.
The overall effect of this book is not quite up to Blake Pierce's usual standard, though it is still far above many other novels/authors' efforts to entertain. Why not buy Once Trapped (or the whole Riley Paige Mysteries) series now and decide for yourself? Luckily there's not long to wait for book 14 - Once Dormant, will be out before Christmas 2018.
When Riley Paige, receives a call, from a woman she had met, while she was investigating a prior case, she’s puzzled. She’s even more baffled, when she realises her caller, Morgan, is calling to tell her that she has finally killed her “abusive husband”. She reports it in - but cannot shake off the feeling that something isn’t just right.
Riley, at that time, is fighting for custody of her adoptive daughter, Jilly. Once she returns, she cannot seem to let Morgan out of her mind. She decides to make an “unofficial trip” to see what the case all about. And when she meets Morgan in jail - she’s even more convinced that this lady cannot commit any gruesome murder.
With help from a young and keen-to-learn cop, she tries and digs for clues. She finds a similar murder in the past - but not motive. And then another murder happens. And she’s convinced with all three MO.
It’s time to get the FBI in - and she convinces the police of the area of the third murder to officially get her, and her team in. Working with her all time fav-partner, Bill, they set about to solve the cases.
The victims were not good men. But - there seems to be no connection, except for one.
Will Riley and Bill be able to catch their killer, before another attempted murder?
Very well written, the plot had a lot of intricacies. And it was definitely one of the better I read in the series. Thrilling, gripping and unputdownable.
I do love how Blake Pierce inserts family drama now and again in this series. A kitten no less! Riley Paige gets a tip from a rookie, local cop that the murder of a super rich man appears to have been committed by his wife. The rookie cop is suspicious because the same type of murder took place a week ago not too far from there. The wife just happens to be someone she interviewed in a previous case, and she knew the woman was being abused by her husband. As always, Riley cannot help herself, and she goes to begin an investigation without BAU authorization. She ruffles local law enforcement feathers, who, of course, notify the FBI that she is there, poking around. It doesn't take long before another murder moves it into serial murder mode, and Riley is already on top of it. I figured out the connection before Blake Pierce revealed it, but it was still fun to read how Riley figures it all out. Great writing in this series.
This one starts with the adoption case for Riley to officially have another daughter. Riley is very nervous about losing her to her biological dad. While she is in Arizona, she gets a call from a case in her past. An abused woman thinks she killed her husband. This leads Riley to place a call to the police and hand the case over to them. However, she gets a call from an officer who is convinced the wife did not do it. Riley follows her instincts and goes against protocol again. This time Meredith, her boss stands up for her and covers.
This goes through twists and turns until Riley and Bill both go undercover to find the true killer.
I do keep hoping for some change of pace rather than the same story line happening with different cases, but ill keep on reading!
Loved it great read and quiet real if u understand domesric abuse wish riley would hit it off with bill though keep thinking maybe in the next book but its just not happening read all books in 1 month shall miss the reading of this bundle its been addictive and costly too
Great reading been very occupied by the stories been very buisy reading over the past fee years and i have to say that riley page has truely got me addicted
Riley is overly busy with family issues when she gets a call from a woman she met on another case. The woman thinks she killed her husband but she’s so out of it Riley doubts her guilt and investigates several similar murders. Jilly has issues with her neglectful dad and Riley ends up with a puppy. Daughter April insists she needs her one pet so now they have a puppy and a kitten. Poor Riley the things she does to feel less guilty about being away so much.
These books are incredibly addictive and as you can see from my reading list, I am reading them at the rate of knots. I have been devouring this series and every other series this author has written. What I will note, is that the books seem to be getting shorter at the same price point and the editing leaves a lot to be desired. However, the stories just bring me back for more and more and more.
I had just finished reading Kate wise series and I got back to Riley.. Riley has always been my first love and still is, and I really liked this one. I was actually hoping for Bill and Riley to team up romantically since I find their chemistry more sublime and real than Riley with Blaine.
I love Riley Paige so much, her growth evident in each book and this one so much. Jilly and April are growing too and I love the family she has created and the one she is building with Blaine and his daughter. But still in my romantic heart of hearts I want her and Bill to get together. The diminished never been right but it may be soon.
Riley gets a late night call from a woman she suspected was being abused by her rich husband. A court date takes Riley and new daughter Jilly back to end her abusive father’s contact. Not only does Riley get custody of Jilly but she’s the not so thrilled owner of a puppy and then a kitten. Talk about a full house. Rich men are being found stabbed to death and it takes Riley to see the clues that link the cases. Police think they’ve got the killer but the woman called Riley to help her.
I absolutely love Riley Paige. One would think that by #13 she would lose her appeal but this is not so. The author keeps you coming back because it is not only Riley's current case but also her life and her ups and downs.
I gave this book five stars because I love seeing her character evolve. However, it wasn't the best in the series by far. I'm looking forward to the next book release!!
Another great installment in the life and times of Riley Paige, stubborn FBI agent and devoted mother! She's still breaking the rules of the FBI but her rogue ways usually work out for the best. There is a wonderful development in her family life as well.
I read these books so fast I forget to come to Goodreads and put them on my currently reading list. I missed this and have to guess at my started and finished dates.
Just like all the rest in this series it was amazing, as usual 😀 😃 🙂
Agent Riley Paige is unraveling. She doesn't read the people as easily anymore. She's having trouble pinpointing the killer. Her family life is still chaotic. But she manages to get her killer at the end. Good read.
