Damn. I didn’t know this is the final volume... damn good ending though!

What’s it about?
Basically it’s the final fight between the protagonists and the monsters. That’s all I can really tell you without confusing those who haven’t read the rest of the series and/or spoiling things.

Why it gets 5 stars:
The story is interesting. This volume wraps up the story that fans of this series have been following so as a fan of the series I was happy to see the epic finale happen.
The artwork is fucking beautiful. The great imagery and excellent use of colors is perfect! I know I’ve mentioned it before but the art style in general is great. Like a mix of manga style art and western comic art which is fitting for the series in general.
The characters are very interesting. I’ve talked about this before but it really shows in this volume: I like that the characters seem like actual teenagers and have emotions. A problem I often have is when teen characters is that many are emotionless smile-bots that mostly act like a younger kid would (in dialogue and reactions) and have no flaws or problems in their life except a poor grade at times, but that is not the case in Wayward which is part of why 15 year old me fell in love with it and 18 year old me will still tell you it’s a brilliant comic.
The action scenes are frequent and fantastic. This volume is sorta like the final epic fight in a superhero movie but longer, more intense and with a lot more blood so yeah, it’s fantastic!
There’s a bit of comic relief that is well done.
This comic is pretty suspenseful. Lots of twists and unpredictable craziness.
The ending is good. Wraps the series up nicely.
This book is weird as fuck but still not confusing so I love that. I think books like that are often more fun and unique.
There’s a bit of a message I noticed in this book about how you should be what you want to be, not let the rest of the world bring you down and tell you what to be so that’s a nice, positive message.

Overall:
A fantastic ending to a fantastic series. I will miss it as it is a favorite for sure, probably one of the most well written superhero comics out there IMO. It’s a weird story with amazing action, well written characters and fantastic art.
So I am sad to say goodbye to all these wonderful characters but can safely 100% recommend it and I do!

Wayward ends as it began for me. Decent fun.

This is the final volume so the big war is to come. It actually is a big ass war, lots of running, lots of fighting, and a hell of a lot of death. This bloody war comes to the conclusion after our heroes all work together to stop the demons from coming into their world. Of course it's pretty much one big fight scene so it goes quick and it's a lot of fun but lacks the emotional punch I think it's going for. I'll give Jim Zub credit, some deaths did surprise me. I also still enjoy the overall design. While these characters never really worked for me the overall themes and story were fun enough to read till the end. A 3 out of 5.

I only knew that Wayward exists when I found a cheap copy of its 1st volume in a secondhand bookstore. First volume is underwhelming to be honest if I will take to account the way the story was told. It's not a strong start but the magnificent art and the intriguing concept/plot kept me to read the next volume/s.

It's quite a disappointment of not getting the answers you need as you read along the way. But, somehow on the next next volumes the story took shape and I was quite satisfied on what I got. It's still confusing yet I have known what this is all about. At least to my perception and understanding.

This last volume is a good ending, if not great. It's more brutal and bloodier than ever and it's superb especially the art and the cinematography on the climax and important scenes. The characters did feel more realistic and genuine compared to the other volumes. And the message and lesson were conveyed well.

For me, this is a story of change, of changing times and how the old generation are too attached to their old ways and have doubts in trusting the new generation, told in a story where mythology and magic are involved.

With that, Wayward is all over! Overall, a fairly fun series that didn't always work for me, but was a pleasure to follow these last few years. The series ends on a hopeful note that feels appropriate after the anime-inspired melodrama that the series brought on a regular basis.

Overall series rating: a solid 3.5 stars.

I'm glad this is finished, it was a pretty big disappointment if I'm being honest. Maybe I just set my expectations too high, because throughout the entire thing it seemed like it could get really good but it just never really does. The artwork was always fantastic, I'll give it that. Most of the baddies are throwaways. Except the one guy in the Seersucker suit that never really seemed like he did much but was somehow pulling the strings of all the yokai but who knows why. There was just never anything about him. He made an Oni/Demon and the fight against that thing was ok, not great. The cat girl came back from the dead for some reason (fan service?) to fight in the final battle against cardboard cut outs. Some stuff happened...The End. oh well, on to better things now

Brings the series to a close. I like that it ends on a hopeful yet ambiguous note. Now that I've read the whole thing, though, I definitely don't think the Ireland interlude was necessary.

Well... It's over.

Taking the series as a whole, it was an enjoyable trip into the world of Japanese myth / folklore / fairytales. Zub's comments at the end, in the afterward, make a lot of sense. We grow familiar with our tales of yore and they no longer hold the sway they once did. But, there's always something new. We never stop creating ~ often influenced by the past and original tales (that were, no doubt, influenced by even older tales still). Wayward explored that notion.

The old legends aren't quite willing to let the upstarts displace them... Death and destruction ensues...

3.5/5

I have taken some time after finishing this graphic novel to rate it in, what I hope, is an objective manner. Unfortunately, I found this to be the weakest entry in the series, and this is especially disheartening because it is the last entry. While the story is good, and the art looks great, the ending was lack-luster in my opinion. I still highly recommend reading it but I feel a bit sad that the series did not come to a satisfying end.

Loved the end of this series! All in all the ending left me feeling proud to have had the opportunity to be a part of this awesome story! The perfect mix of action, character comradely, and laughs. I’ll miss this one

Now this is how you finish a story. I am gutted that this story is over, but this was a damn fine series. The ending is worthy of the rest of the story, and works. Artwork is beautiful. I will miss this series, but it went out on a high note.

I loved this graphic novel series and I'm glad I got it!
The ending came too soon but I appreciated the lack of unnecessary drama.
The message of the series is clear and consistent and I love that!
The little essays on the myths and lore were amazing and informative.
Very well done!

Out of all six volumes, this was my least favourite. Yes we lost dear characters but I was disappointed with the pacing and how rushed and anti-climatic the final boss battle and ending were. It didn't feel as exciting as the first 3 volumes in the series.

Wow, what an end to this series! Cataclysmic battles, demons, and a nice way to wrap it all up. Great series, and I’m glad they brought to a good, clear ending rather than going on forever.

The Story of Yokai never ends.

The final chapters of the Wayward story are collected in this volume and things are going down with a bang. The New Gods of Japan are being hunted down and although they are young and vastly outnumbered they will do whatever it takes over throw the old Yokai world. Sacrifices will have to be made for their goal to be achieved and although I am not keen on the final battle with Nurarihyon which I will not discuss to avoid spoilers but like the rest of the series I enjoyed the interesting characters and really enjoyed the fantastic art and use of colors that have made this series one of my favorites visually.

So if you like Yokai inspired artwork and stories like I do (or perhaps just enjoy a story about super powered youths rebelling against the man) then by all means this series only has 6 volumes spread across 30 chapters so I would say give it a chance. Have no idea what a Yokai even is? These books also open up the old tales of Japan (even though they have become more popular lately like with Yokai Watch) and explain some of the interesting monsters that have been around for generations. :)

This whole comic is not bad, but it's certainly a rushed waste of potential. I would probably give it as a whole a C, or a 7.5/10. I'll be generous and round up because is very cool.

You never really have time to sit with the cool ideas they're throwing at you, you're always getting whiplashed back and forth between focuses. The art is mostly so-so, and as a result the cool stuff you're looking at is just kind of meh when you combine that with the rushed, scattershot focus of the comic.

It's a bummer - because there's real potential in this story. If it was 50% longer and had a lot more 'solely focused on this one character/plot' issues, I can see this being remembered as a masterpiece, even my personal issues with the art aside.

Wayward ended a little more frenetic than I had hoped based on the tight pacing of the first two volumes, but this was a fun ride and I'm glad I went along with it. Heavily anime inspired in these last couple of volumes (even moreso than the first few), we find our heroes preparing for the final showdown with the old gods.

I loved the attention to detail and the amount of research that went into the various gods and factions, and I hope that the essays at the back of the collected editions inspires some kid to learn more about the legends that lurk under the surface of every culture around the world.

I've been reading these volumes as they come out and loving them, but as I came close to finishing this final one I realised that I really need to re-read all 6 volumes together to really get the full impact of the story. Still it was a really enjoyable tale, with plenty of weird and wonderful gods and monster. Kinda like a Studio Ghibli story but with super-powered teens who are sick of boomers ruining stuff.

I'm a little sad that this was the final one. I loved this installment but at the same time I also feel like they rushed this one a little bit. So much happened and it was almost condensed and one more could have happened I feel.

The loss and gain of characters where a little sad and I feel as though they could have elaborated a bit on at least two of those instead of them just happening.

Over all this will be a series I will be keeping and rereading for sure and suggesting to others.

Fantastic, it was at times hard to figure it out where this series was heading, but it all came together in this final volume. It is about the old who want to prevent the young from taking over. It is about the powers that be, that want to hold on to their power. I am not talking about politicians or billionaires, but about mythical beings and magic. The artwork was still great.

I loved it. The culmination of fantastic ideas and hard work. Wayward is unique and beautiful. Jim Zub and Steven Cummings produce an epic epic an for a stellar series. I appreciated how the book sucked me in and made me think about other cultures possible mythology. This book was a delight. If you like comics, teen adventures, or fantasy books this book is for you.

The series started great, focusing on the mystery of this hidden mythology universe, but then it became a fighting comic, with things becoming an excuse for fights (like the whole Ireland thing, that makes no sense). It's a fun read anyway, but I would recommend Skull Kickers to get into the Jim Zubverse

Interesting wrap up to the series. I won't ruin the ending with spoilers, but I will say that the strands of fate have interesting twists for our heroes. I would love to see more folklore merging stories like Wayward.

A wild, epic conclusion to this Japanese & Irish mythological clash between old gods and the children that arise to become the new ones. I especially loved the illustrations and immersive panel layouts!

Did the same thing I did with the last volume (reading the last two issues back to back) because I was so close to the ending. Decent series with pretty good art and coloring (shout out to Tamra Bonvillan)

Overall I really enjoyed this series. It could have been a epic length fantasy saga and I love that the whole felt tight and neat in its six volumes. The art is wonderful all the way through, and I was very delighted by this group of friends. I will probably reread this in the future.

Nice finish for the story, far better than vol 5 with more story and some last minute character development. But the end seams a bit incoherent to me and leaves a lot of questions...
