Got a race of bottom-line-worshipping alien bureaucrats draining an entire sun of its power to feed their lust for profits, damning a whole solar system to death? You might be in need of a Fear Agent, extreme alien exterminators, like Heath Huston, to set the record straight. Sure he’s usually half in a bottle of whiskey, can’t shoot all that straight anymore, and cusses enough to make little green men blush, but in a universe this messed up, he’s just the man for the job.
A compilation of tales from the Fear Agent universe, starring work from creators such as Chris Burnham (Batman), Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire), Kieron Dwyer (XXXombies), Francesco Francavilla (Archie), Ivan Brandon (VS), Eric Nguyen (Halo), and many more!
Rick Remender is an American comic book writer and artist who resides in Los Angeles, California. He is the writer/co-creator of many independent comic books like Black Science, Deadly Class, LOW, Fear Agent and Seven to Eternity. Previously, he wrote The Punisher, Uncanny X-Force, Captain America and Uncanny Avengers for Marvel Comics.
Fear Agent : Final Edition Vol. 4 is the fourth omnibus of the Image comics series created by author Rick Remender (Deadly Class, Black Science), and Tony Moore. It’s a collection of one-shots, DH Presents shorts, and Tales of the Fear Agent story, with a nice lineup of writers and artists.
Most of the stories are pretty entertaining, and a welcome return to the pulp roots of the series after the grand finale (with neat Twilight Zone, Aliens, and spaghetti westerns references, a great story reflecting on the Internet, and the horror of toilet sharks). For the most part, they take place between Heath’s departure from Earth, and the beginning of the series.
Some of them are written by Remender, and the artists appropriate the universe in their own style in quite a good way.
While not essential to those only wanting to read the main story, it’s a nice addition to the collection for those wanting more of the early kind of adventures.
This is a hard one to rate as I fell for the trap of thinking the story somehow continued after volume 3 and was disappointed when I started reading this book. As a series, fear agent is amazing and definitely a five star series. This book had a drop in quality because it was a collection of short stories which was interesting to see and fill the gap from when Heath leaves earth to the start of the series as that period has the potential to be rich with stories but none of these stuck for me.
(Zero spoiler review) It was only as I commenced reading Final Edition volume 3, that I realised that the series actually finished with volume 3, and volume 4 was in fact a compendium of all the shorts I had been reading at the end of the single issues. Now, part of me was relieved, as I had been looking at the Goodreads scores, and having seen volume 4 score significantly lower than 3, I wasn't envious of reading the final ten issue arc of this series if it was clearly the weakest part of the run. Though when I found out I had all but read it already, the score suddenly made sense, I didn't feel so bad, and the series proper was able to end on a rather splendid and touching high. There is nothing particularly terrible about volume four, although there is nothing exceptional about it either. A collection of around two dozen short stories, each written and illustrated by a different creative team (for the most part). Some a pretty decent, others less so. Though it is the brief and random nature of the stories that truly keeps this from elevating closer to the series proper (flawed as that was as well). If this side narrative ebbed and flowed and connected together more, then you no doubt would be looking at a higher score. Though a 3 seems unquestionably fair, from my point of view. Completists will want it regardless, although if you can stand knowing there is another volume out there you don't own, then you can kind of probably skip this one, sort of. 3/5
Ponadto naprawdę nieźle poradzili sobie oni z nawiązaniami do korzeni serii i odniesieniami do spaghetti westernów, horrorów czy znanych popkulturowych dzieł.
Mnie osobiście mocno urzekły rysunki autorstwa Erica Powella i Kierona Dwyera. Pierwszy z artystów postawił tutaj na bardziej mroczny i surowy klimat prac, drugi poszedł w stronę żywego cartoonowego stylu. W obu przypadkach świetnie udało im się oddać klimat opowieści i jej dynamikę.
A series of short tales in this comic series - OK but a bit repetitive
This volume consists of short stories by a variety of writers and illustrators, all about our favourite Fear Agent. Mainly they involve him extricating himself from loads of dodgy situations. It’s all a bit samey after a while and doesn’t add much to his story, just more bloodshed and violence. As will happen with different creative teams, the quality varies. Nothing special unless you’re a Fear Agent addict.
I wondered what was up with this volume, after the story seemed to be completed after volume three. It was a collection of Fear Agent stories by various writers and artists. It was a little uneven, some great work, some I didn't care for at all. The completionist in me is glad I read it, but part of me wishes I had stopped after the previous volume.
Abandoning all idea of reading Book Three in this series – the main story is just one extended cockamamie piece of hokum – I turned to this instead for the short out-take stories, and the ones from guest creators. And you know what? It's more of the same, cockamamie, scatological and illogical, hokum sci-fi. But more enjoyable for being in small doses.
These "Tales" stories are kinda crappy throw a ways that do little to advance Huston as a character and do absolutely nothing for advancing the story line as a whole. Mostly he's just a drunkard with an utter disregard for all life and that really isn't who he is in the main line. In the main line, he's all of those things but untimely is redeemable, not so in these stories.
A good collection of one-offs from various writers and artists. Not as touching as the main series but fun content and alternative takes on the character. Shows how low Heath was so it enriches his redemption post script. The range of art styles is the real treat here.
This is what I felt like the story was going to be from the beginning. These are a collection of Tales that are mostly all one off adventures that were a lot of fun.
