This is an incredible tool for beginning teachers! An extremely well written book! The author does a great job of including humor so this doesn't seem like just another book for new teachers to study. It feels much more like an interactive notebook, engaging the reader and letting them know they are not alone in their frustrations and fears. This is a great way to help support 1st year teachers!
Another great resource for beginning teachers. I might recommend this is a student teaching seminar OR as a graduation gift to future teachers. Every chapter is neatly laid out with reflection questions and prompts. The chapters are organized by the stages of teaching: Anticipation, Survival, Disillusionment, Rejuvenation, Reflection, Second Anticipation. Each chapter walks teachers through with encouragement, anecdotes, prompts, and suggestions for both the classroom and self-care.
It took me awhile to get through the book because of how busy I was, but this book is really enjoyable! I recommend it to any teacher, new or not. There are tons of great ideas about self-care and how to apply strategies in your classroom. I will be rereading this as needed throughout the school year!
Awesome field guide for not only new teachers, but veteran teachers too! Great ideas and advice for anyone working in a high-stress working environment.
I started reading this book in October of my first year of teaching. What a relief it was! The author understood what I was going through and provided strategies to help overcome struggles that the FYOT so kindly brings! I loved how often she pushed me to reflect on my successes as well as the short-comings. I’m in this teaching career for the long run, but this book gave me more encouragement to push through this difficult year and a guarantee that it will be much better in the years to come.
