I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book :) this is the third installment in a paranormal series of novellas about members of a peculiar detective agency :) set in the world where people are aware of all sorts of... let's say, different creatures ;) as much as the second one could be read as a standalone, this one... technically it still works as a standalone, but I highly recommend you to catch up on the previous books, so you can really understand all the connections between characters :) especially since we have consequences of some very surprising turns of events from the previous novels :) since it's a novella, my review will be a bit shorter than usual as well, so let me tell you a bit more about the characters and the plot, and then I will say why you need this unique story in your lives ;)
This book once again maintaines a great balance between solving a new case and getting to know our main group more... :) and speaking of them... ;) we have JB, the owner of a detective agency and part daemon, Nikki who is part imp, Gemma and Jason, human twins with very interesting abilities and Zhanna, a fairy :) so as you can see, they are a very interesting bunch :) with this installment once again we have a time jump between this and previous story... so there are some significant changes in group dynamics... I'm not gonna say anything more, since this is the third book and that would spoiler certain things ;) but I will say that I enjoy very much getting to know them more... especially since I heard from a very trusted source *coughs* author herself *coughs* that each of the next few installments will concentrate on one team member :) and I can't wait :) especially since this story really sets everything up perfectly for that outcome :) our team has to find the person who is blackmailing the biggest players in the city... and I am not talking about athletes ;) as always, the writing style was absolutely fantastic :) fast paced and entertaining, the story held my attention from the very first page :) I highly recommend you guys to give this book, this series, and this author in general a try... especially if you don't have a lot of time and you need something amazing to brighten your day :)
Ancestral Secrets: Book 3 in the Adept Solutions Series of Special Investigations for the Magickally Challenged.: An Urban Fantasy Novella., my third read/listen from author Teagan Kearney. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. Apryl Renee West's narration adds to the well-written book's enjoyment. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
One of the greatest compliments I (and many other readers) can give an author/book is the desire to reread it immediately after finishing it the first time. This doesn't happen often to me but did when i read Ancestral Secrets! This little book was just THAT good!
Kearney has given us book 3 of a delightful series of novellas and it was a wonderful romp practically from the first word. For a fantasy lover, Ancestral Secrets has a good bit to love including daemons, imps, vampires, faeries and just lots and lots of action and interplay between five main characters and a multitude of others who are at least part "supernatural" humans. There is a bit of mystery to be solved, several major players in the city of Tropolis being blackmailed, a poisoning, a little bit of romance and a tiny faerie who frequently gets drunk on sugar; this book was the best yet of the series.
The author is good, really good, at making her characters believable. She is a master of dialogue with her characters and plots a story which is fast moving and insanely fun to read! At one point, Kearney has a description of "Hell" that is so vividly written, the reader almost smells the sulphur-ridden atmosphere.
Another good thing is that this volume can be read as a stand-alone book in spite of it being in a series. There are frequent allusions to events in past books but the author provides enough detail to allow a new reader of the series to be "up-to-speed" without feeling like parts of the the story are missing. I do recommend reading the preceding books to get to know each of the characters better.
Ancestral Secrets will be enjoyed by anyone from a young adult to experienced (!) readers like me. Enjoy!
Ancestral Secrets – Adept Solutions Bk 3 – Written by Teagan Kearney Blackmail is the key to this case!
Blackmail, double-dealing and dubious secret organizations. Solving one problem one is doable for the Adept Solutions crew but dealing with all three will be a challenge. Someone is blackmailing three of the most powerful citizens in Tropolis; the mayor, a master vampire and a ruthless crime boss, and all three have hired the private detective agency to find the perpetrator.
What did I like? Wow, this is book three of the Adept Solutions series and it is so filled with action and throw in JB’s fathers illness. This book is the best of the series and I loved the interaction between the characters. Gemma is finally acknowledging that JB loves her and they are in a relationship.
What will you like? Magic, humor, fairies, vampires, and all the great fantasy characters. The mix of all of these and the different problems of all of the characters will keep your nose it the book until the final page. I received this from the author as a member of the ARC team with no other compensation.
Why not just blackmail everyone? JB and his team are on a case of blackmail in this third book of the Adapt solutions series. Our hero and his colleagues are on the hunk for a black mailer, while at the same time trying to make the world a little better. I truly enjoyed this third installment in the series. We not only get to follow the investigation, but we also get to learn a little more about them. As the other two books, it’s very well written with an exceptional well build world. I can see our world go in that direction, should the supernaturals come out of the closet. The narration of the audiobook was fantastic. I am definitely going to look for more books narrated by Apryl Renee West. I got the audio version of this book for free, and bought the ebook version, since it helps me dwell more into the details of the story. That makes the ebook a good companion to the audio book. I am leaving a voluntary review, since I loved the book.
I went from liking the first book a little, the 2nd was better, and the third is the best yet. I went on Amazon and it doesn't look like there are going to be any novellas for this series. Which was sad. The author left herself open for a great 4th book. Than she can sell 1&2 in a pack and at least 3 & $ in the next. I want to know what happens to Jason! And Nicky! She left plenty of story left so I Hope Teagan Kearney decides to pick back up with this book. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more of her books. This book had a different narrator. She was just as good as the other one, maybe even a LITTLE better. Come on Teagan, you know you got another story in ya!!
Loved reading about the characters that I met in books 1 and 2 but the actual mystery was a bit flat. Why was the lab in operation? What were they using the results for? Where were the results sent? Left me feeling that I had missed out on something. The characters however were absolutely brilliant. The sugar drunk fairy, the lovesick twin, the cheated on imp and of course the relationship between our hero and heroine. Which is going from strength to strength.
I received a free copy from the author at my request opinions are my own. I am still totally in love with this series. JB and his team are back again despite some major changes going on in his team. Jason is dealing with a strong connection to the fairy that ascend him. Nikki is thinking her husband is already cheating. But, there’s a lot at stake when the team gets multiple cases leading to one group that’s blackmailing some of the biggest citizens and it’s up to JB and them to find out who before the whole city might suffer some bad experiences. Great story as always.
The adept solutions team are back. They get asked to check out a blackmail threat on the Mayor, then several others appear with the same blackmailer. A good mix of humour, magic with some slight romance.
Funny and so easy readable this is a third story about this team and is on a par with the rest . Lots of action magic and intrigue and well worth the read but try the first two books first for maximum enjoyment.
Great story to go with the first two. This book ends with the employees of Adept Solutions going under some major changes in their lives. The pace on this book was better than the previous ones and extended all the way to the end.
Before commenting on the book itself, what is going on with the horribly unwieldy title as it seems like some other fields have been randomly slapped into it unlike the first two in the series and all three books should be tagged as part of the same series so new readers can more easily find the others since they are all well worth a read or listen.
Now that is out of the way, this 3rd book in the series continues the development of the varied cast and their world as they deal with new problems and incidents that expand the scope of that world with new organisations being introduced that you suspect will have an even greater impact in future books.
In the previous book I found that the narrator had seemingly got more comfortable with the cast and added more to that book than the first one, so it might have been slightly worrying that there was a change in narrator with this one. However this was not an issue with this new narrator seeming comfortable with the cast right from the outset and managing to enhance the book quite nicely.
Overall, another quick and enjoyable episode in this series with a length and tone that would make it being well suited to being heard in a single sitting.

This is my review of the audio version as posted on Audible:
This is the third book in the series and it's as entertaining as the previous two. It also has the same strengths and weaknesses as the other books in the series. On the one hand, the plot is fast-paced and logical, the characters are likeable and the banter between them quite funny; on the other hand, the case is solved almost too easily, without bigger obstacles and red herrings on the way. But there are also new players in the game and the background is better developed, focusing more on the magical-normal tension which so far has not been so obvious and not a big part of the world building.
Narration by Ms West is really good, though you can easily speed it up a bit without loosing much from her performance. She does voices well and the characters' personalities come out nicely in her interpretation.

Book e seemed to be a much quicker story then the first two. It’s been a few months since I reviewed them. I really enjoy this world Teagan has created. I’d like to see more about our main characters. JB and his crew all seem pretty damn cool. Very good at their jobs and all supernatural. Can humans and their kind coexist in harmony. Maybe.... one day.
I was voluntarily provided this review copy at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator.
