As genre-bending as Madeleine L'Engle's Time Quintet, the debut novel from Kevin C. Magavern, Forgetting Kora is a new addition to young adult science fiction.
Cricket Wolff's father, Owen, has a past he never discusses, not even with Cricket's mother. When mysterious Aunt Kora comes for a visit, Cricket discovers that Owen has renounced the family calling—guardianship of the sensitive ecology of the Texas Hill Country--and that his silence has placed Cricket in danger. Kora tells Owen that Cricket must return to the Hill Country with her. Little does Cricket realize that she possesses the powers to take up the obligation her father has set aside.
A brilliant debut novel fusing themes of family, ecology, economics, religion, and science. This story of Cricket and her family's struggle of maintaining values amidst the lure of modern life will keep you thinking well after you've finished the book.
This story is so well crafted, I had to read it twice. You feel like you are in this amazing adventure in the Texas Hill Country along side the main characters, as you are also learning a little about the plants, animals, and landscape that makes it such a wonderful place to live. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author, as we are blessed with future books in the Titans of the Earth series and beyond.
