Perils of Wrath

Rate this book
Sir Roland Beaumont's investigation into his birth parents' deaths leads him to Guildon Castle, domain of Lord Craven. Roland's plans are complicated when the eart enlists him to tame his stepdaughter, Audrina Gibbons, by training her as a squire. Roland soon finds that Audrina—Audri—is much more than he imagined.

Unable to save her mother from Craven's physical abuse, Audri's open hostility for her stepfather and his scheme pits her against her would-be trainer. Audri's provocation strains Roland's composure, much as his merciless training regime tests her willpower.

Sir Roland's quest for truth soon tests the resolve of both knight and squire as the dark secrets of Guildon Castle are unearthed—secrets never meant to be revealed. . . secrets that some would kill to keep.

I grew up in a small town outside Yosemite National Park, California, U.S.A. I enjoy soccer, piano, reading, writing, art and my family. Years ago I spent 18 months in Italy teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Seeing the castles and old Roman cities enhanced my fascination for ancient and medieval culture. In college I studied zoology, botany and criminal justice. I've worked as a wildland firefighter, security guard and a police officer, but I am currently a stay-at-home mom, spending time with my children and husband. I love thinking up new ideas for interesting stories and musical compositions to go with them. I tend to favor the 18th-19th C for my romances but this was rather awesome despite that. I loved the head to head between the two, her being broken down (though I personally think she didn't complain/antagonize him enough). Well written and easy to read. The story was good to follow, though some of the plot seemed glaringly obvious (Heath, really? Couldn't miss that.). I liked that there wasn't a lot of push into unnecessary secondary characters and it really focused on the couple's interactions.

This book had all the makings of a read I would enjoy - a historical setting, a non-rushed and believable romance, a strong female protagonist, an admirable and respectable male protagonist and really great character development on all fronts. The female lead, Audri, is tenacious, fiery, vibrant and extremely likable as a character. The male lead, Roland, is (of course strong and handsome) tenacious and fiery in his own way, as well as loyal and kind. It is well written and once you get past the first 60% of the book, it moves along at a swift pace.

While I did enjoy the book overall, it took me over two weeks to just get past the first half of the book. This was frustrating for me because I typically finish a book, start to finish, in one day. It's not that it didn't interest me, I just felt like the buildup took too long and lagged. I would read a chapter and put it down because it wasn't the page turner I was hoping it would be.

Fantastic Sequel!!

I have read the first book, Shadows of Valor, by Elsie Park so many times and absolutely love it. The other day it caught my attention again and I looked up the author only to find she’d written this new book and I didn’t even know! I did a happy dance and immediately purchased it.

While this book is easily a sequel to the first (characters are referenced and it takes place after that book) you don’t necessarily have to read them in order, although I think it helps.

Roland, a brave and honorable knight, is trying to find the truth about his birth parents. He made for a perfect hero, and I especially loved how he has his own faults and mistakes that he had to constantly work on.

Lady Gibbons, or Audri, was a relatable and courageous heroine. I liked her from the start- she stands up to her awful stepfather at all costs in order to do what is right and try to help others. I loved watching her change throughout as well- as a “squire” to Sir Roland, she learned she had more strength and stamina than she ever realized and learned to hone her skills. She and Roland had the sweetest romance, and their story was unique and kept me reading far into the night.

The plot fascinated me- Elsie Park does so much research into the time period and really brought it to life. There were lots of side characters I liked, and danger and villains that made me hold my breath at the climax of the story. If you’re looking for a great and clean romance, knights of valor and honor, evil schemes and villains, mysteries and plot twists, and lovable side characters, this is definitely a book I’d recommend!

This book had all of the elements of a great story- a tough heroine demonstrating her strength (training to become a knight- how awesome is that?!), a slow building romance with an admirable hero, a tyrannical step father just asking for his comeuppance. I expected a really exciting read. Sadly I was bored through most of this book. Even the romance fell flat for me. Yes they spent a lot of time together but I never felt as if they were attracted to each other at all. They only really discussed her training and never had a real conversation as equals when suddenly they are kissing. After countless pages on her training, the resolution of the mysteries were rushed and really unfulfilling.

I enjoyed this book. I was able to identify with and understand the characters, and I enjoyed seeing Audri go through her transformation. The plot was unique while still being believable, and had action, romance, and intrigue. Great book from Elsie Park!

I was pleasantly pleased! I found it thought provoking as well. Well worth the read and think I will seek out this author to see if I like more than just this book of hers.
