Genius material
I believe every politician must read this book before perusing and every one else before voting blindly for them.
A vivid combination of wit, humour, a dash of romance and naughtiness, and a sizeable amount of vivaciousness

Interesting how this book published 35 years ago describes Ghanaian politics and politicians in ways that are more than familiar! Does this mean we haven't made that much progress?

For the serious undertones of this novel, the writing was pretty poor. The descriptive imagery seemed to jump from one part to the next without much transitioning. I was always aware that I was reading a book and not actually watching the events unfold first-hand.
Unfortunately, the events that are described in this book still occur in one form or the other in modern-day African politics, almost always blatantly and with impunity so it seems that Amu Djoleto's satire if read by current politicians when still young and impressionable wasn't much heeded.

It was an interesting book about Ghanaian politics after colonialism. Obviously we were grappling with our new found freedom and politicians thought there could do anything. In hindsight from this book and others like it like A man of the People by Chinua Achebe, I believe coup detats saved Ghana from becoming another North Korea, Libya, Uganda or any other country where the fundamental human right is wantonly disregarded.

I enjoyed reading this novel. I'm a Ghanaian, and this reminded me of Kwaku Ananse stories - the antagonist was in plain sight, and the author made you know things were going to unravel soon for him even though he appeared to thrive. And yet, the story got you hooked enough to get to the end.
My only issue is that the author could have used simpler words to make the interaction between characters much more understandable.
A good novel that discusses important social values.
